S. di quanto Si è compiaciuta di Suggerire. Ho ricevuta la lettera di Vostra Serenità de' 9 del passato, e come ella si riportava allo scritto da lei al signor cardinalo Azzolino, così sono stata ragguagliata di tutto dall'Eminenza Sua; e ringrazio Vostra Serenità di quanto si è compiaciuta di suggerire.
Tutto si farà secondo il consiglio e desiderio suo — eccettuato l'obbligarmi a pigliar marito a gusto della Repubblica, al che io non potrò mai condescendere. Potrò ben si accommodarmi a soffrire d'esser obbligata a non maritarmi senza consenso della medesima, ma l'assicuro che del maritarmi a modo loro in poi sono promta [sic] a promettere ogni cosa. Ma mi dichiaro che quando si volesse da me questa obbligazione di maritarmi a gusto loro, io eleggo piuttosto di ricusare la loro corona che di accettar mai una così in[i]qua e crudel legege [sic]!

J'agréerai tous les autres points: mais de prendre un Mari au goût de la République, je ne saurois jamais y condescendre. Je pourrois bien souffrir d'être obligée à ne me pas marier sans le consentement de la République; mais de me marier à leur fantaisie, je suis plutôt prête à promettre toute autre chose que celle-là. Je déclare même, que quand on voudroit m'imposer l'obligation de me marier à leur goût, j'aimerois mieux réfuser leur Couronne, que de me soumettre jamais à une loi si inique & si cruelle.
Swedish translation (my own):
Jag skall hålla med om alla andra punkter, men att taga en make till smaken av republiken, jag vill aldrig nedlåta mig därtill. Jag kunde mycket väl lida av att vara tvungen att inte gifta mig utan Republikens samtycke; men att gifta mig efter deras infall, jag är snarare beredd att lova allt annat än det. Jag förklarar till och med att när de ville ålägga mig skyldigheten att gifta mig efter deras smak, skulle jag hellre vägra deras Krona än att någonsin underkasta mig en så orättfärdig och så grym lag.
English translation (my own):
I will agree with all the other points, but to take a husband to the taste of the Republic, I will never condescend to it. I could well suffer from being obliged not to marry without the consent of the Republic; but to marry at their whim, I am rather ready to promise anything but that. I even declare that when they wanted to impose on me the obligation of marrying to their taste, I would rather refuse their Crown than ever submit to a law so iniquitous and so cruel.
French translation of the original (my own):
Au nonce, le 9 février '69.
J'ai reçu la lettre de Votre Sérénité du 9 du passé, et comme elle se rapportait à la lettre qu'elle écrivit Monseigneur le cardinal Azzolino, Son Éminence m'a tout informé; je la remercie donc de ce qu'il lui a plu de suggérer.
Tout se fera selon leurs conseils et leurs désirs — à l'exception de l'obligation de prendre un mari au goût de la République, chose à laquelle je ne saurais jamais condescendre. Je pourrai bien m'accommoder de souffrir l'obligation de ne point me marier sans leur consentement; mais je l'assure que, hormis le fait de me marier selon leurs vues, je suis prête à tout promettre. Mais je déclare que, si l'on exigeait de moi cette obligation de me marier selon leur mode, je choisis plutôt de refuser leur couronne que d'accepter jamais une loi si inique et si cruelle!
J'ai cependant confiance que Votre Sérénité, avec sa dextérité, saura traiter ce point de telle sorte que je demeure en ma liberté; et, m'en remettant à ce que Son Éminence elle-même l'écrira par ailleurs, je souhaite pour Votre Sérénité, etc.

Otrzymałam list Waszej Wysokości z 9 lutego ubiegłego miesiąca, a ponieważ odniósł się do listu do monsiniora kardynała Azzolino, Jego Eminencja poinformował mnie o wszystkim; dziękuję Waszej Wysokości za to, co zechciał zasugerować.
Wszystko będzie zgodne z ich radą i pragnieniem — z wyjątkiem zobowiązania mnie do poślubienia męża, który będzie odpowiadał gustom Rzeczypospolitej, na co nigdy nie będę w stanie się zniżyć. Z łatwością zniosę obowiązek nieożenności bez ich zgody; ale zapewniam pana, że poza małżeństwem według ich zwyczajów, jestem gotowa obiecać wszystko. Oświadczam jednak, że jeśli ten obowiązek małżeństwa według ich gustu będzie mi nie potrzebny, prędzej wybiorę zrzeczenie się ich korony, niż kiedykolwiek przyjęcie tak nikczemnego i okrutnego prawa!
Mam jednak nadzieję, że Wasza Wysokość, dzięki swojej zręczności, będzie wiedział, jak postąpić z tą kwestią w taki sposób, abym zachowała swobodę; i, odkładając na później to, co więcej napisze do pana sam Jego Eminencja, życzę Waszej Wysokości itd.

Allt skall ske i enlighet med deras råd och önskan — förutom att jag vore förpliktad att ta en make som Republiken tycker om, vilket jag aldrig kommer att kunna kondescendera till. Jag kommer mycket väl att kunna acceptera att inte gifta mig utan deras samtycke; men jag försäkrar Er att jag, förutom att gifta mig enligt deras sätt, är redo att lova vad som helst. Men jag förklarar att om denna skyldighet att gifta mig efter deras smak skulle behövas av mig, väljer jag hellre att avsäga mig deras krona än att någonsin acceptera en så orättvis och grym lag!

To the nuncio, February 9, '69.
I have received Your Serenity's letter of the 9th of last month, and as you referred to your letter to Monsignor the Cardinal Azzolino, His Eminence has informed me of everything; and I thank Your Serenity for what you have been pleased to suggest.
Everything shall be done in accordance with their counsel and desire — except for obliging me to take a husband to the Republic's taste, to which I will never be able to condescend. I will well be able to accommodate myself to suffer the obligation of not marrying without the consent of the same; but I assure you that, aside from marrying according to their way, I am ready to promise anything. But I declare that, should this obligation to marry to their taste be wanted of me, I sooner elect to recuse their crown than ever to accept so iniquitous and cruel a law!
I trust, however, that Your Serenity, with your dexterity, will know to handle this point in such a way that I remain in my liberty; and, remitting myself to what more will be written to you by His Eminence himself, I wish Your Serenity, etc.
