Supposta tal verità se io a nome di Sua Santità facessi a questa Repubblica la proposizione di Vostra Maestà al presente che concorrono gli altri principi, e per il sesso e per l'abilità alla successione, stimati comunemente più proporzionati al bisogno di questo regno, ed anco, per il denaro che distribuiscono, più plausibili per il vantaggio che ne ritraeno li privati, certo che niuno potrebbe considerare come disinteressati li sentimenti di Nostro Signor ne recati per pubblico benefizio, e perciò di niun frutto riuscirebbero li miei uffici. Anzi che le altre fazioni, tutte disgustate per il danno che apprendesse poter recare ai loro interessi tal proposizione, si unirebbono ad escludere Vostra Maestà ed a screditare le mie operazioni.

Là dove se la proposizione sarà da me fatta in tempo di obstinata discordia fra le fazioni e solo per modo di proponer pubblica quiete un mezzo termine da non escludere le speranze d'alcuni degl'altri concorrenti, ma differirle ad altro tempo con provvedere intanto con la persona di Vostra Maestà al bisogno del regno non potranno eglino offendersi, nè la Repubblica creder fatta per alcun fine politico da Sua Santità tal proposizione, e potremmo sperare di far colpo senza considerabile obiezione.

Questo motivo aggiunto alle difficoltà altre volte da me rappresentate a Vostra Maestà mi fanno tuttavia soprassedere nel far parola di questo affare almeno fino a che mi giunga la risposta di questa, nella quale dopo che Vostra Maestà avrà avuto campo di sentir di persona li sentimenti di Sua Santità e li consigli del signor cardinale Azzolino, sì degni di prescrivermi espressamente, come e quando dovrò io servirla per poter obbedir ciecamente i di lei benignissimi cenni senza timore che da Vostra Maestà mi venga ascritta a negligenza o poca accuratezza la dilazione che io stimasse dover prendersi per maggiore vantaggio quando contrario al mio desiderio seguisse l'evento; ed intanto profondamente me l'inchino.

Les bons offices de Notre Seigneur le Pape sont respectés ici de plus en plus, & sont plus efficaces que ceux des autres Princes; parce que comme ils le sont effectivement, ils paroissent tout-à-fait desintéressés, & n'ont pour but que le bien de ceux en faveur desquels ils sont employés. C'est par la même considération que le Saint Siége fait profession de s'intéresser pour tous sans faire tort à aucun d'eux. Cette vérité présupposée, si je faisois présentement la proposition de V. M. à la République, pendant la concurrence des autres Princes, lesquels à cause du sexe & de l'habileté à succéder, sont en général estimés plus convenables au besoin de ce Royaume, & même, par l'argent qu'ils distribuent, plus favorisés par l'avantage qu'en retirent les particuliers; on ne pourroit sûrement pas alors regarder les sentimens de Sa Sainteté comme desintéressés, ni comme tendans au bien public. C'est aussi pour cela que tous mes bons offices n'auroient aucun succès; car en ce cas les autres Factions, dégoûtées d'une telle proposition, qui pourroit faire tort à leurs intérêts, s'uniroient sans doute pour donner l'exclusion à V. M. & pour décréditer mes opérations. Il semble donc que je ne doive faire la proposition que dans le tems de quelque brouillerie obstinée entre les Factions, & seulement par maniére de proposition pour la tranquillité publique, comme un medius terminus, non pour ôter les espérances aux autres Concurrens, mais pour les renvoyer à un autre tems, en pourvoyant en attendant, par la Personne de V. M. au besoin du Royaume. En donnant ce tour à l'affaire, personne ne sauroit s'en trouver offensé, & la République même croiroit qu'une pareille proposition n'auroit été faite par Sa Sainteté à aucune fin politique, & cependant nous pourrions faire le coup sans contradictions considérables.

Ce motif, joint aux autres difficultés que j'ai autrefois représentées à V. M. me font surseoir de faire mention de cette affaire, au moins jusqu'à ce que j'aye réponse sur celle-ci, dans laquelle après que V. M. aura eu le loisir de pressentir là-dessus de bouche le sentiment de Sa Sainteté, & les avis du Cardinal Azzolino, elle daignera me prescrire expressément, comment & quand je dois la servir pour obéir aveuglément à ses gracieuses intentions, sans craindre que V. M. impute à ma négligence ou à mon peu d'exactitude, le délai que j'ai estimé devoir prendre pour mieux réussir, quand même l'événement ne seroit pas tel que je l'aurois desiré.

Vår Herre påvens goda ämbeten respekteras här mer och mer och är effektivare än andra furstars; ty som de verkligen är, tycks de vara ganska ointresserade och har endast till förmån för dem i vars fördel de är anställda. Det är av samma hänsyn som den Heliga Stolen säger sig bry sig om alla utan att skada någon av dem. Denna förutsatta sanning, om jag för närvarande skulle framställa Ers Majestäts förslag till Republiken, under andra furstars tävling, som på grund av sitt kön och förmåga att lyckas i allmänhet anses mera lämpliga för detta rikets behov, och t. o. m. pengarna som de fördelar, mer gynnade av den fördel som privatpersonerna drar av dem; man skulle då säkerligen inte kunna betrakta Hans Helighets känslor som ointresserade, och inte heller som ägnade det allmänna bästa. Det är också därför som alla mina goda tjänster inte skulle ha någon framgång; ty i så fall skulle de andra fraktionerna, äcklade av ett sådant förslag som kunde skada deras intressen, otvivelaktigt förena sig för att giva Ers Majestät uteslutningen och misskreditera min verksamhet. The good offices of Our Lord the Pope are respected here more and more, and are more effective than those of other princes; because as they really are, they appear to be quite disinterested, and have for their object only the good of those in whose favour they are employed. It is by the same consideration that the Holy See professes to concern itself for all without doing harm to any of them. This presupposed truth, if I should presently make Your Majesty's proposal to the Republic, during the competition of other princes, who, on account of their sex and ability to succeed, are generally esteemed more suitable to the needs of this kingdom, and even by the money which they distribute, more favoured by the advantage which the private individuals draw from it; one could then surely not regard the sentiments of His Holiness as disinterested, nor as tending to the public good. This is also why all my good offices would have no success; for in that case the other factions, disgusted with such a proposal which could harm their interests, would undoubtedly unite to give Your Majesty the exclusion and to discredit my operations. It seems therefore that I ought only to make the proposal in time of some obstinate embroilment between the factions, and only as a proposal for the public tranquility, as a medius terminus, not to deprive the hopes of the other competitors, but to send them back to another time, providing in the meantime, through Your Majesty's person, for the needs of the kingdom. By giving this turn to the affair, no one would be offended, and the Republic itself would believe that such a proposal would not have been made by His Holiness for any political purpose, and yet we could do it without considerable contradictions.

This reason, joined to the other difficulties which I have formerly represented to Your Majesty, cause me to postpone mention of this affair, at least until I have an answer on this one, in which after Your Majesty shall have had leisure to sense His Holiness's feelings on this subject, and the opinions of Cardinal Azzolino, you will deign to prescribe to me expressly, how and when I must serve you in order to blindly obey your gracious intentions, without fearing that Your Majesty will impute to my negligence or my lack of accuracy the delay that I felt I had to take to succeed better, even if the event were not as I would have wished.

Les offices célébrés au nom du Souverain Pontife sont toujours plus vénérés et plus efficaces que ceux des autres princes, car ils sont en effet et en apparence totalement désintéressés et accomplis uniquement au profit de ceux qui les gouvernent, le Saint-Siège professant s'employer au bien de tous sans nuire à personne.

En admettant cette vérité, si, au nom de Sa Sainteté, je présentais à cette République la proposition de Votre Majesté, selon laquelle les autres princes, tant par leur sexe que par leurs capacités, sont considérés comme plus aptes aux besoins de ce royaume, et aussi, par l'argent qu'ils distribuent, plus susceptibles d'en tirer profit pour les particuliers, il est certain que personne ne pourrait considérer comme désintéressés les sentiments de Notre Seigneur, exprimés pour le bien public, et mes fonctions seraient donc vaines. Usługi sprawowane w imieniu Najwyższego Papieża cieszą się zawsze większym szacunkiem i są skuteczniejsze niż te sprawowane przez innych książąt, ponieważ w istocie są i wydają się całkowicie bezinteresowne i odprawiane wyłącznie dla dobra tych, nad którymi są sprawowane. Stolica Apostolska deklaruje, że działa dla dobra wszystkich, nie szkodząc nikomu.

Zakładając tę prawdę, gdybym w imieniu Jego Świątobliwości miał obecnie przedstawić tej Rzeczypospolitej propozycję Waszej Wysokości, że inni książęta, zarówno ze względu na płeć, jak i zdolności, są uważani za bardziej odpowiednich dla potrzeb tego królestwa, a także, ze względu na pieniądze, które rozdają, za bardziej odpowiednich dla korzyści, jakie czerpią z tego osoby prywatne, jest pewne, że nikt nie mógłby uznać uczuć Naszego Pana, kierowanych dla dobra publicznego, za bezinteresowne, a zatem moje usługi byłyby bezużyteczne. Tjänster som utförs i den högste påvens namn vördas alltid med större vördnad och är mer effektiva än andra furstars, eftersom de i själva verket är och verkar vara helt oberoende och utförs enbart till förmån för dem över vilka de är placerade, medan den Heliga Stolen påstår sig använda sig av sig själv till allas fördel utan att skada någon.

Om jag, under förutsättning av denna sanning, i Hans Helighets namn skulle lägga fram Ers Majestäts nuvarande förslag till denna Republik, att de andra prinsarna, både genom sitt kön och sin förmåga, anses vara mer lämpade för detta konungarikets behov, och även genom de pengar de fördelar, mer rimliga för den nytta som privatpersoner får av det, är det säkert att ingen skulle kunna anse Vår Herres känslor, som framförts för allmännytta, som opartiska, och därför skulle mina ämbeten vara till ingen nytta. Warsaw, October 2, 1668.

Offices passed in the name of the Supreme Pontiff are always held in greater veneration and as more effective than those of other princes, because they are in effect and appear to be totally disinterested and performed solely for the benefit of those over whom they are placed, the Holy See professing to employ itself for the benefit of all without harming anyone.

Assuming this truth, if I, in His Holiness' name, were to make to this Republic Your Majesty's proposition at present that the other princes, both by their sex and their ability, are considered to be more suited to the needs of this kingdom, and also, by the money they distribute, more plausible for the benefit that private individuals derive from it, it is certain that no one could consider Our Lord's sentiments, brought about for the public benefit, as disinterested, and therefore my offices would be of no avail. Indeed, the other factions, all disgusted by the damage that such a proposition could cause to their interests, would unite in excluding Your Majesty and discrediting my operations.

If the proposition is made by me in a time of obstinate discord between the factions and only as a means of proposing public peace, a half-term that does not exclude the hopes of some of the other competitors, but defers them to another time while in the meantime providing for the needs of the kingdom through Your Majesty's person, they will not be able to take offense, nor will the Republic believe that such a proposition has been made by His Holiness for any political purpose, and we can hope to make an impact without considerable objection.

This reason, added to the difficulties I have previously presented to Your Majesty, nevertheless makes me refrain from mentioning this matter, at least until I receive your reply. In this reply, after Your Majesty has had the opportunity to personally hear the sentiments of His Holiness and the advice of Monsignor Cardinal Azzolino, you will deign to expressly prescribe to me how and when I must serve you so that I can blindly obey your most gracious wishes without fear that Your Majesty will attribute to my negligence or carelessness the delay which I may deem necessary for a greater advantage if events should occur contrary to my wishes; and in the meantime I bow to you profoundly.
