"... Quelques expressions ... font assez entrevoir, que l'intention du voyage de Christine en Suède avoit aussi été d'y effectuer quelque chose en faveur du Catholicisme (V. Mém. de Christine T. II. pag. 45. &c.), dont pourtant elle fut détournée par les résolutions brusques des Etats, assemblés alors en Diette.
Le dépit qu'elle en conçut, la porta à s'adresser à l'Empereur, dans l'espérance de perfectionner en Allemagne un ouvrage dont elle ne pouvoit venir à bout dans sa propre Patrie. Elle lui écrivit là-dessus le 30. Juillet (Lettere à Diversi. pag. 108.) de la même année [1661]...
Ce que Christine n'avoit marqué à l'Empereur qu'en termes généraux, est plus détaillé dans sa Lettre au Nonce Apostolique de Vienne, conçue ainsi (De la même date l. c. p. 108 110.)..."
"... Some expressions ... give a clear indication that the intention of Kristina's journey to Sweden had also been to do something there in favour of Catholicism (See Mémoires de Christine, volume II, page 45, etc.), from which, however, she was diverted by the brusque resolutions of the Estates, then assembled in a Riksdag.
The spite she felt at this led her to approach the Emperor in the hope of perfecting in Germany a work which she could not complete in her own Fatherland. She wrote to him about this on July 30 (Lettere a diversi, page 108.) of the same year [1661]...
What Kristina had only marked to the Emperor in general terms is more detailed in her letter to the apostolic nuncio of Vienna, conceived thus (Of the same date, l. c., pages 108, 110.)..."

Since my affairs require me to keep me for some time in these parts, I would like to satisfy myself by employing myself also in the benefit of our orthodox religion, while I could have perceived that attempts would not be in vain to introduce its free exercise both in this city and in Denmark. But since the enterprise itself is great, I would like before undertaking it to be provided with the assistance and favor of His Imperial Majesty in order to make it easier for the spirits to condescend to the request. However, since this thought is so pious, and worthy of being ardently promoted by Your Holiness, I take the confidence to ask you, as I do with every strictness, to obtain two letters from His Imperial Majesty, one addressed to this city, and the other to there; the other to the King of Denmark, in whom you show effectively, that by pleasing my desire in this particular, something so grateful to His Majesty will be done that he will have no ordinary disgust at hearing that the opposite follows. I assure you that Your Holiness will have equal concern in this no less than the zeal you must have for our religion, than the vivacity with which I beg you, and that you will find His Majesty willing to help me in this occasion, so that I will wait to receive the letters as soon as possible. It remains that Your Holiness knows that I would not want whoever treated this negotiation except with the utmost secrecy, and so that no news of it would arrive in Rome, before it was drawn to a happy ending, not agreeing to publish the treatises for uncertainty of having a good result, as well as for the prejudice that could derive from the same of mine and my particular interests. Be sure, however, that if it pleases God to make this application of mine fruitful, I will appropriately give notice to Your Holiness so that first of all you can then transmit it wherever you will, and when it is not possible to obtain the intent, you will at least be a witness to me, that I will not have failed to do my part to achieve it. Your Holiness will receive enclosed the letter from His Majesty, and, recommending everything again with all warmth, I desire your prosperity and health.

Comme mes affaires m'obligent à me confiner quelque temps dans cette contrée, je voudrais me satisfaire en m'employant aussi au bien de notre religion orthodoxe, puisque j'ai pu m'apercevoir que les tentatives qu'on fait pour en introduire le libre exercice, tant dans cette ville qu'en Danemark, ne seraient nullement vaines; mais comme l'entreprise en elle-même est grande, avant de l'entreprendre, je voudrais être pourvue du secours et de la faveur de Sa Majesté Impériale, afin de faciliter grandement les esprits à daigner accéder à la demande.
Cependant, puisque cette pensée d'une chose est si pieuse et digne d'être ardemment promue aussi par Votre Sérénité, je prends la confiance de la prier, comme je le fais, de toute insistance de me procurer deux lettres de Sa Majesté Impériale, l'une adressée à cette ville et l'autre au roi de Danemark, dans lesquelles vous montrez effectivement qu'en accédant à mon désir en ce point particulier, il se fera quelque chose de si agréable à Sa Majesté qu'elle sera non ordinairement dégoûtée d'apprendre que le contraire se produit.

Il reste que Votre Sérénité sache que je ne voudrais pas que cette affaire soit traitée autrement qu'avec le plus grand secret et de telle manière qu'aucune nouvelle n'en parvienne à Rome avant qu'elle ait été menée à une heureuse conclusion, car il ne convient pas de publier les traités, tant à cause de l'incertitude d'en avoir une bonne issue, qu'à cause du préjudice qui pourrait en résulter pour moi-même et pour mes intérêts particuliers.
Soyez assurée, cependant, que s'il plaît à Dieu de rendre fructueuse cette demande, j'en informerai Votre Sérénité en temps opportun, afin qu'elle puisse la transmettre avant tout autre où bon lui semble; et s'il n'est pas possible d'obtenir cette intention, elle sera au moins mon témoin que je n'aurai pas manqué à ma tâche pour l'obtenir. Eftersom mina angelägenheter kräver att jag begränsar mig en tid i denna nejd, skulle jag gärna vilja tillfredsställa mig genom att även sysselsätta mig till förmån för vår ortodoxa religion, ty jag har kunnat inse att de försök som görs att införa den fria utövandet av den både i denna stad och i Danmark inte alls skulle vara förgäves; men eftersom företaget i sig är stort, skulle jag innan jag företar mig det gärna vilja få Hans Kejserliga Majestäts hjälp och ynnest för att i hög grad underlätta för sinnena att kondescendera till begäran.
Men eftersom denna tanke är så from och värdig att ivrigt främjas även av Ers Durchlauchtighet, tar jag mig tillförsikten att be Er, vilket jag gör, med all brådska att skaffa mig två brev från Hans Kejserliga Majestät, ett adresserat till denna stad och det andra till Danmarks konung, i vilka Ni effektivt visar att genom att efterkomma min önskan i detta avseende kommer något så behagligt för Hans Majestät att ske att han kommer att bli ovanligt disgusterad av att höra att motsatsen sker.

As my affairs require me to confine myself for some time in these parts, I would like to satisfy myself by employing myself also for the benefit of our orthodox religion, since I have been able to perceive that the attempts that are made to introduce the free exercise of it both in this city and in Denmark would not be at all in vain; but because the enterprise in itself is great, before undertaking it I would like to be provided with the assistance and favour of His Imperial Majesty so as to greatly facilitate the minds to condescend to the request.
