Serenissima imperatrice,
Signora Sorella mia amatissima,
Roma, 15 luglio 1684.
Di Vostra Maestà Cesarea
affezionatissima Sorella.

tillgivnaste Syster.

English translation (my own):

Most Serene Empress,
My most beloved Lady Sister,
Your Imperial Majesty is right to believe that I am enjoying the important victory obtained by the imperial arms with the capture of Baza, while you know with what partiality I am interested in the glories and advantages of the imperial House of Austria. In the meantime, I render Your Imperial Majesty most cordial thanks for the affection you have shown me in communicating this prosperous progress; and, as from such a happy beginning of the present campaign (but conceiving hope of other more notable victories), so I pray God to continue His assistance and particularly to preserve the person of Monsieur the Duke of Lorraine, whose valour renders itself worthy of the common applause and of an immortal glory with which I ratify to Your Imperial Majesty my constant affection, with which I wish you every felicity. Rome, July 15, 1684.
Your Imperial Majesty's
most affectionate Sister.

Count Luigi Marsigli of Bologna, serving the Emperor in the past campaign in Hungary, was made a slave by the Turks, and after nine months of slavery with infinite suffering and loss of his health, he was finally freed with a large ransom that his house paid for him. I, because of the dependence that this cardinal and his house have on me, recommend him effectively to the Emperor, so that he may not only keep his position for him, but so that he may also increase the effects of his beneficence by providing him with some advice to compensate his house for the large sum of money it has spent on his ransom. In the meantime, I also recommend him to Your Eminence with all the fervour of my soul, begging you to protect and favour him, together with the Emperor and his ministers, to make him obtain the aforementioned graces, persuading yourself that I am about to profess to Your Eminence a particular obligation; and I remain

Note: Count Luigi Marsigli (1658-1730) was an Italian scholar and natural scientist who also served as an emissary and soldier. When he returned to Italy after his travels throughout Asia Minor, he entered Emperor Leopold's service in 1682 and fought with distinction against the Turks, who wounded him and captured him in action on the River Rába. They sold him to Bosnian soldiers or to the Pasha of Temeşvar Eyalet (Timișoara), who met him after the Battle of Vienna, and his release was secured on March 25, 1684, after which he resumed service to the Emperor.

A l'empereur.
Cependant, je me confirme

To the Emperor.
April 29, '84.
It will be known to Your Imperial Majesty that Count Luigi Marsigli, serving you in the past campaign in Hungary, was made a slave by the Turks, and after nine months of slavery with infinite suffering and the loss of his health, he was finally freed by means of a large ransom paid by his house; and, as he therefore deserves much more to enjoy Your Imperial Majesty's graces, I, who hold this cavalier and his house in particular protection, recommend him with all my heart to Your Imperial Majesty, so that you may not only preserve for him the effects of your beneficence, but also with some advice to restore his house to the great money which it has spent for his freedom, with which Your Imperial Majesty will make him worthy of your generosity and piety and will oblige me in a singular manner. In the meantime I confirm myself as

One writes so much to me from all sides about your mad behaviour that I am completely scandalised and forced to testify to you that I am perfectly informed of the madness and lies that you have spouted through Sweden; but, as I am not credulous, I would like to have enough kindness to give you reason to justify and correct yourself, if you can, before making you feel the effects of my indignation.

However, you will know that I forbid you from having the boldness to say or do anything without the express order of Lord Olivekrantz, governor general of my domains, to whom alone I have given the entire and absolute direction of my affairs in the North, and who alone must report them to me. I want you to respect and obey this incomparable minister, as my own person, if you want to continue in my service and if you do not want to incur my implacable indignation. I have ordered him to disavow everything you have said and done without orders and to make you comply with your duty.

Correct yourself if you are guilty, or justify yourself if you are innocent, and do not force me to give you the most violent signs of my indignation. Live in such a way that the said Olivekrantz may bear witness to me of the wisdom of your conduct and of your submission to him, as well as of your fidelity for my service. I remit myself to what more he will tell you about the grievances of which one assures you that I have wanted to send him in substance. Once again, justify yourself, and try to deserve, through complete submission and wise conduct, the continuation of my good grace.

English translation (my own):

Most Powerful Queen,
My highly honoured and dear Lady Mother,
As to the reason why Your Majesty has been caused to send to me to send her Captain von Rosenbach, I have learned it from Your Majesty's motherly and highly honoured letter, dated Rome, this past March 11, as well as von Rosenbach's business concerning several matters concerning Your Majesty's Pomeranian estates.

As nothing is now more in my heart than that Your Majesty should be well-satisfied in her affairs and desires and not have reason to trouble herself in any way, preferably in things that could go against the recess and the resolutions given by Your Majesty several times, this time I therefore did not want to fail to allow myself to be presented with the matters by the said von Rosenbach in a written memorial; and after a careful examination of the matters communicated to him over that in the resolution, I trust it will be pleasing to Your Majesty and that Your Majesty will be able to feel therefrom the loving affection and filial reverence that I invariably bear and preserve for Your Majesty, which I gladly testify on all other occasions.

Your Majesty will be able to have her aforementioned Captain further give a humble account of his administration; I am well-satisfied with his conduct and behaviour in this commission. For the rest, I filially commend Your Majesty to God's kind protection and to all high prosperity and desirable well-being. Given at Stockholm, July 18, 1684.

well-affectionate son

Rome ce 13. May 1684

English translation (my own):

May 13, 1684.
I am as much persuaded as you wish that it is only the enemies of the King, your master, who accuse him of union with the Turks, of which I have never suspected him; but I forgive everything that prudence and interest publish; everything is suspect in politics, and those who see themselves attacked believe that everything is conspiring against them.

I even excuse the animosity which prevents them from reflecting on the proud behaviour of their enemies, and if they forget the insults that were made in Constantinople to the French ambassador almost at the time of the declaration of war; however, this process makes it well known that the superb court of the Porte does not spare France enough to derive from it all the advantage of which a less proud power could profit. As for the Battle of Saint Gotthard, which you remind me of for the glory of your nation and your master, it is due to them with justice. It was on this occasion that the French distinguished themselves so gloriously, as they always do everywhere; and the great Montecuccoli, who told me the details, did them justice, and did not pretend to be partly indebted to them for the victory he won. This action was so glorious for France, that I am preparing to see something similar in the past campaign. But God wanted to give this time the relief and glory of Vienna to the great and brave King of Poland.

As for the conversion of heretics, of which you speak to me with so much emphasis, I don't know what to tell you about it, and I am so little enlightened on these matters that I still doubt whether we are working in France on make heretics Catholics, or Catholics heretics. In the meantime, I hope that the cause of God will triumph everywhere, as it has triumphed in Vienna. One also knows very well that the King, your master, is accountable only to God for his actions. This privilege, however, is not unique to him; it is common to all of us to whom God has given the grace to be born kings; however, this account is a terrible one, and we have not gotten off cheaper. One can deceive men in a thousand ways; but one can never deceive God, one cannot impose on him, and conscience neither flatters nor deceives anyone.

As for the relief of Candia, it is appropriate not to boast of it among the heroic exploits of your brave nation. I do not know how it happened, but unfortunately Candia was lost only after help from France arrived. It is also necessary to forget the companies on Gigery, on Chios, on Algiers, and on several other cities where the Cherkesses have made great noise and little effect. The Turks think little of it, and the Christians are beginning to make fun of it too; and as regards the blockade of Luxembourg, the generosity and moderation of the King, your master, on this occasion must not be extolled at the expense of the prudence to which this glory is due.

For the rest, you give me the best news in the world in assuring me that the Sacred League will only serve to make peace with the Turk. Do you think it is a small thing to obtain it? In my opinion, that is quite enough; and at whatever cost it is done, provided it is in common, I will always believe it well done. We must not flatter ourselves with chimeras. We are victorious, it is true; but the Turk is still as formidable as he was, and we will not take Constantinople as easily as we imagine, even if the King, your master, were in the game. But whatever effect the Sacred League may produce, it is certain that it is the only rampart that can be opposed to the torrent of Asia. It is up to God to do the rest. This is how I reason with great calm about what is happening. God preserve you and bless you as I desire.

Notes: The Porte, also known as the Sublime Porte or the Sublime Gate, as a translation from the Ottoman Turkish "Bâb-ı Âli" ("باب عالی"; "Exalted Gate"), was a general name for the Ottoman court and thereby the government of the Ottoman Empire. The name was a synecdoche originally referring to the outer gate of the Sultan's Topkapı Palace, at which justice was administered, and later it came to refer to the gate at the palace of the Grand Vizier.

Constantinople = the old name for what is now the Turkish city of Istanbul.

The Battle of Saint Gotthard was a battle of the Austro-Turkish War, fought on August 1, 1664 on the Raab (Rába) between Mogersdorf and the Cistercian monastery St. Gotthard in what is now Hungary (Mogersdorf is located in Jennersdorf District in the Austrian state of Burgenland). The battle was fought between Imperial Army forces (including German, Swedish and French contingents) led by Count Raimondo Montecuccoli, and the army of the Ottoman Empire, under the command of Köprülü Fazıl Ahmed Paşa. The Ottomans were defeated by the Imperial forces, and nine days later they signed the Peace Treaty of Vasvár. Despite the defeat of the Turks, Emperor Leopold concluded a treaty favourable to them, which was a great shock to most of Europe as well as the Hungarians, leading to the later Magnate conspiracy, which sought to force the Habsburg monarchy out of power in Croatia and Hungary.

Candia = the old name for the Greek island of Crete.

Gigery (Djidjelli) = the old French name for what is now the city of Jijel in northeastern Algeria.

Chios = one of the Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, as well as the name of the capital city of this island.

Algiers = the capital city of Algeria.

Cherkesses = the old name for the Circassians, the people of the historical region of Circassia in the Caucasus Mountains that is now shared by the Russian republics of Adygea, Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia.
