Kristina's letter to Cardinal Galleazzo Marescotti, the nuncio of Warsaw, dated October 1668 (APOCRYPHAL)

Lettres secrètes de Christine, Reine de Suède, pages 141 to 145, published by the Cramer Brothers, 1761; original at the National Library of the Netherlands (Het Koninklijke Bibliotheek)

The letter:

Italian translation (my own):

Monsignor cardinale,

Polish translation (my own):

Monsignore Cardinale,

On chciałby, powiadam, zniewolić Polskę swoim ambitnym kaprysom i uciskać ją stopniowo, czyniąc Koronę dziedziczną. Ubóstwia swego syna i chciałby go ustanowić, pomimo Rzeczypospolitej.

Swedish translation (my own):

Monsignor kardinal,

English translation (my own):

Monsignor Cardinal,
Let the Republic know that I am the only one left of the royal house of Sweden and Poland, that I would never have left my crown if Sweden had been Catholic, that it would be a crying injustice to me to prefer a foreigner unworthy of occupying the throne of my ancestors. Tell them ceaselessly and forcefully that the interest of Poland is to elect me as queen because, I not wanting nor having to marry, it has nothing to fear for its liberty.

Above all, prevent that France or the other princes penetrate this negotiation. I trust no one on this subject. It is necessary to make it understood to the lords in particular that those who will serve me on this occasion will be filled with honour and bestowed with estates as soon as I am on the throne.

No one other than me can be suitable for Poland. The Duke of Neuburg is avaricious, old, burdened with children and overwhelmed with illnesses and debts; his wife is proud, imperious and wicked. The sovereigns who claim to serve him are working underhand to ruin him. The Prince de Condé is the only one I fear; his merit offends and greatly displeases me. He must be made odious; that will be very easy for me. He is a fiery prince who will sooner or later take revenge on Poland for the sorrows and torments that France has unjustly made it experience.

This prince is not fit to govern a free nation; he was born under a despotic government and is a despot himself as prince, for all the great princes, and even those who have some reason of power in such a government, are as despots in their sphere, as the prince himself is over all the rest of the nation. He would enslave, I say, Poland to his ambitious caprices, and he would oppress it little by little by making the Crown hereditary. He idolises his son and would like to establish him, in spite of the Republic. France will lend a strong hand to this prince if it is listened to; it is even in its interest to get rid of Condé, who is too restless, too haughty and too warlike to live in peace under such a man.

Although the Prince de Condé is a great captain and a good soldier, he is hot-tempered and avaricious. He would be a wicked king because avarice is, in my opinion, the lowest and most contemptible of all vices in a prince. Even if he were poor, he must be liberal and magnificent.

You can make the Republic understand that it is a real happiness for its tranquility to choose me in preference to another pretender. I am a woman, it will therefore be easy for them to govern me. Without ambition, without vision, I will take pleasure in living in peace with the Republic; it will be freer and more absolute than ever.

Finally, promise the impossible, flatter, make friends everywhere, so that I can succeed in reigning over these restless and irresolute men.

The Pope is in my favour; support his credit, and also assert his holy blessings with which he is so liberal towards foreigners. As interest blindly leads men, spread gold and silver by the handful, but above all, spread also many caresses and engaging and flattering protestations. Condé will be short, his funds are not inexhaustible; his credit is not worth mine, and I have powerful, enlightened and prudent friends whose friendship alone will always compensate me very amply if my hopes and their troubles vanish.

The letter:

Octobre 1668.

Polish translation (my own):

Monsignore Kardynale,

Swedish translation (my own):

Monsignor kardinal,

Gå in i hans åsikter.

Oktober 1668.

English translation (my own):

Monsignor the Cardinal,
Do you advise me to present myself to the Sejm? If I believed that, armed with a brief and my good mien, it would be enough to fix the eyes of the Republic on my person, I would fly to Poland; but if I had to return as quickly as I had come, what would become of me? What would I do? Be cursed, storm and blush? No, no, the children of the gods did not venture like that.

I would much rather have you dispatch brief after brief, and couriers after couriers be loaded with blessings, than that I expose my face to these indeterminate republicans.

Move Heaven and earth, for the Pope wants you to propose me on his behalf. Enter into his views. If they are listened to favorably, so much the better; on the contrary, if they are rejected, I wash my hands of them. Neither Thiare, nor I, nor you, I think, will blush at the proposition.

I regard myself, however, as the most important and most suitable person to fill this vacant place, in consideration of my rights, my birth, the Roman religion, and my reign over Sweden, which has been glorious. Finally, Kristina Gustavsdotter deserves more than one throne. October 1668.

Lettres secrètes de Christine, Reine de Suède, pages 136 to 139, published by the Cramer Brothers, 1761; original at the National Library of the Netherlands (Het Koninklijke Bibliotheek)

Kristina's actual letter of July 31/August 10 (New Style), 1668 to Father Michał Antoni Hacki is here:

The letter:

Polish translation (my own):

Musimy dokończyć to wielkie dzieło i uwieńczyć je chwalebnym sukcesem.

Hamburg, 10 sierpnia 1668.

English translation (my own):

Father Hacki, tell the nuncio that what he has done for me so far is admirably good. We must complete this great work and crown it with glorious success. I like to triumph in everything I do. The Republic of Poland imagines every day new obstacles and little means to distance me, or to disgust me, from the Crown. Woman, I displease them, but it would be the same if I were a man, or if I could become one. When these gentlemen want to remember that there has been more than one princess elected in Poland who had neither my merit nor pretensions as well-founded and as legitimate as mine. The daughter of Gustav Adolf will seem worthy of wisely governing a small republic.

What do they have to fear from me? I have reigned in Sweden; my country will miss me for a long time. I was young, absolute, daring, and often hot-tempered; however my reign was brilliant, peaceful and glorious. Now I am reassured and experienced; my passions are calm, I will work miracles.

Those who believe that a girl like me is not capable of usefully serving Poland and protecting it do not know me well.

Should one go at the head of an army? I will fly there with transport, and it will never be soon enough. The sole hope of appearing there one day and of commanding it wisely makes me aspire to this Crown with so much passion.

If they wanted to elect me Queen, on the condition that I did not go to the army during my life to command, I would refuse the most eminent and most established throne of all the thrones in the world.

Sacrificing my life for the salvation of Poland, and immortalising my sex, that is where all my wishes are limited.

The letters from Rome will decide me; know that I only fear the Prince of Condé; he is a prodigy of science, valour and intrepidity; he brings together in himself all the sublime passions of great men; for neither the Muscovite nor the stupid Duke of Neuburg causes me even the slightest worry. The Pope declaring himself for me, I will have few formidable enemies. Kristina will easily win over all her haughty competitors if the nuncio works with as much dexterity and passion as you do.
Hamburg, August 10, 1668.

French translation (my own):

1678. Le 31 décembre. —

Polish translation (my own):

1678. 31 grudnia. —

Russian translation (my own):

Swedish translation (my own):

1678. Den 31 december. —

English translation (my own):

1678. December 31. —
The gazettes are all full of the Livonian army, but I am scandalised by you, who are a man of grace, to see that you also believe it. It seems impossible to believe that the Swedes would make this error of sending this army after the total loss of Germany, for it certainly served no purpose other than to lose it and Livonia with it; and may it please God that the league of the Poles with the Muscovites is not against Sweden instead of against the Turk, as one says. It is certain that they will never have a better opportunity than this to recover Livonia and Ingria; we will see.

English translation (my own):

February 16, 1675.
The disorders which are committed in my house in Hamburg oblige me to order you to stop there for a couple of months to settle everything there on your return from Sweden. You must know, however, that I do not want you to leave Sweden without having paid Texeira all that is due to him, nor without having had the leases of my domains renewed, or with Reenstierna, or with some other who can give valid guarantees. When this is done, I want you to give me an exact account of your commission, and of my wishes in this respect; and after having received your despatches, the best you can get from the court, and the approval of Texeira respecting your conduct, you could set out for Hamburg without waiting any longer, as I had commanded you, for the Riksdag of Sweden. But you must immediately transport yourself to Hamburg and await my orders, which will be regulated by what you have brought back to me. God bless you.

Dla Wasenau.
Rzym, 16 lutego 1675.

You will have seen by my previous letters that I am quite satisfied with you and that my anger has entirely calmed down, as you have partly done your duty. Keep pleasing Texeira as you have done so far, and don't be so foolish as to stab yourself. Live to serve me and obey me, and give me an exact account of everything. Goodbye.

Do widzenia.

English translation (my own):

September 1, 1674.
The letter I have received from you on your arrival in Stockholm no longer surprises me. I am getting used to your style and knowing that you're good for nothing. I am ashamed of having deceived myself in the good opinion I had of you. I confess to you that if I had thought I was receiving letters from you as insipid as yours, I would not have been on my guard against employing you, as I have done, in the most important affair of my life. You send me back to the next ordinary and promise to do wonders, but I am beginning to know you too well to believe you, and am quite persuaded that you will do nothing worthwhile. However, since you are there for my misfortune, I must still order you to force Reenstierna and Kurck to pay me, and to send without delay to Texeira the immense sums which are due to me. I write more fully to Kurck, and I order Broberg to inform you of everything. Do your best to let me know that I am mistaken in the bad opinion I have of you. Goodbye.

Polish translation of the original (my own):

Piszę obszerniej do Kurcka i nakazałam Brobergowi, aby pana o wszystkim poinformował.

English translation of the original (my own):

Rome, September 1, 1674.
The letter I have received from you on your arrival in Stockholm surprises me no more. I am beginning to accustom myself to your style, and I am beginning to know that you are good for nothing. I am ashamed to have been mistaken in the good opinion I had of you! I confess to you that if I had believed I would receive from you letters as insipid as yours, I would not have had the care to employ you, as I have done, in the most important affair of my life. You send me back to the next ordinary and promise to do wonders, but I am beginning to know you too well to believe you and am very persuaded that you will do nothing worthwhile.

However, since (to my misfortune) you are there, I must still order you to force Reenstierna and Kurck to pay me and to send the immense sums due to me without delay to Texeira. I am writing more fully to Kurck, and I have ordered Broberg to inform you of everything. Put some effort into making me know that I am mistaken in the bad opinion I have of you. Goodbye.

English translation (my own):

My Most Reverend Father,
I am so satisfied with the service rendered to me by Father Antoni Michał Hacki, Abbot of Kołbacz, of your Order, in my chapel in Hamburg for several years, that I feel obliged to ask you for confirmation of the consent he had from the Father General, your predecessor, to serve me for as much time as I please in this ministry. I beg you to not refuse it to me, assuring you that in this you will render a very important service to God and to His Church, and that I will testify to you my gratitude for it on all occasions.

Najczcigodniejszy Ojcze,

I have received your letter of the 16th of last month; and having seen the objections that have been made to you concerning my person, I have replied to them to inform you of the manner in which I would like you to combat these oppositions. I send them to you enclosed, begging you to be very reserved on my subject, and not to speak to anyone about me without an express order from the Apostolic Nuncio, to whom I have fully abandoned, after God, the direction of this negotiation. He assures me, moreover, that your affection and your zeal will employ all the prudence and application necessary in a matter of this importance.

Do ojca Hackiego.
15 czerwca '69 r.
