Je vous crois si peu propre à être Martyr, que je ne vous conseillerai pas de vous exposer au danger de faire une lâcheté pour vous sauver la vie. L'honneur & la vie sont deux choses qui méritent, ce me semble, qu'on en ait soin. S'il vous arrivoit de nier, ou de dissimuler votre Religion, vous ne sauveriez ni l'un ni l'autre, s'il vous arrivoit après de vous présenter devant moi. Il faut vivre & mourir Catholique, & si vous y manquez, vous vous rendrez indigne d'être à moi. Que les menaces du Roi de Suède ne vous étonnent pas. Passez-vous de le voir, & revenez auprès de moi. Après la menace qu'il vous a faite, vous serez mieux avec moi que jamais; & l'animosité qu'il témoigne contre vous, vous tiendra lieu de mérite auprès de moi. Ne vous mettez pas en peine. Revenez, mais revenez sans avoir fait rien de bas, ni de timide, & portez-moi des attestations véritables d'avoir vécu en vrai Catholique, & satisfait à tous les devoirs auxquels nous oblige notre Religion Catholique-Romaine. Si vous y revenez de cette façon, je vous recevrai avec joie & bonté; & quand il ne me resteroit qu'un morceau de pain à manger, je le partagerai avec vous avec joie, & je mourrai plutôt que de ne vous pas assister. Mais si la crainte ou l'espérance vous ébranle au point de manquer à ce devoir, qui vous doit être plus précieux que la vie, ne pensez jamais à me revoir, & soyez assuré que je vous punirai de cette lâcheté, & que toute la puissance du Roi de Suède ne m'empêchera pas de vous donner la mort entre ses bras, quand même vous vous y seriez réfugié. Jugez après cela vous-même, si vous êtes en état de retourner auprès de moi, ou non, & croyez que je vous tiendrai parole.
English translation (my own):
Rome, February 2, 1658.
I believe you are so unfit for being a martyr that I will not advise you to expose yourself to the danger of cowardice to save your life. Honour and life are two things that I think deserve care. If it happened to you to deny or to conceal your religion, you would save neither one nor the other if it happened to you to appear before me afterwards. You must live and die a Catholic, and if you fail, you will make yourself unworthy of being mine. Do not be surprised at the threats of the King of Sweden. Pass by to see him and come back to me. After his threat to you, you will be better off with me than ever; and the animosity which he testifies against you will take the place of merit with me. Do not worry. Come back, but come back without having done anything low or timid, and bring me veritable attestations of having lived as a true Catholic and fulfilled all the duties which our Roman Catholic religion obliges us. If you return to it this way, I will receive you with joy and kindness; and when I have only a piece of bread left to eat, I will gladly share it with you, and I would rather die than not assist you. But if fear or hope shakes you to the point of failing in this duty, which must be more precious to you than your life, don't even think about seeing me ever again, and be assured that I will punish you for this cowardice, and that all the the power of the King of Sweden will not prevent me from killing you in his arms, even if you have taken refuge there. Judge after this yourself whether you are able to return to me or not, and believe that I will keep my word.
