Severin Bergh on Maria Eleonora and Kristina's regency, part 2

Drottning Maria Eleonora och drottning Kristinas förmyndarregering, article written by Severin Bergh for Historisk tidskrift, tjugoandra årgången: 1902, pages 173 to 181, published by Emil Hildebrand, 1902

The article:

Denna plan sattes genast i verket.

Soop reste i förväg i början af mars. I midten af juli blef man sent omsider i ordning.

Dit anlände eskadern i början af augusti.

Denna gång tog man saken ganska lugnt.

English translation (my own):

Maria Eleonora was born on November 11, 1599 and was the daughter of Elector Johann Sigismund of Brandenburg and his wife Anna of Prussia. Anna belonged to the branch of the House of Hohenzollern which held East Prussia as a duchy under Polish county sovereignty; her father, however, was the last male descendant of this branch, and after his death in 1618 the land passed to the Elector of Brandenburg. Maria Eleonora was born in Königsberg and seems to have often stayed in Prussia during her childhood, which explains that she had a certain fondness for this country and later wished to return there.

When Maria Eleonora became an adult, King Gustav Adolf of Sweden appeared as suitor. As we know, it was Gustav Adolf's youthful dream to have Ebba Brahe as his wife, but in 1618 she was married off to Jakob de la Gardie and was thus lost to the King. He then turned instead to the Princess Maria Eleonora of Brandenburg, renowned for her beauty, and personally proposed his proposal during a visit to Berlin in May 1620. In the summer of the same year, Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna was sent out to collect the bride. But at the last moment, it all came to naught. Elector Johann Sigismund had died in December 1619 and was succeeded by his son Georg Wilhelm. This made a turnaround in Brandenburg's politics, approached the Emperor and Poland and was therefore less anxious about the Swedish marriage.

When Axel Oxenstierna arrived in Berlin on September 4, the Elector was in Prussia, and the councilmen firmly refused to engage in negotiations on the drawing up of the marriage contract because they had received no instructions regarding this matter. The one who then saved the situation was Maria Eleonora's mother, the Dowager Electress Anna, who had always been particularly favourable to the disputed relationship between her daughter and the Nordic king. Maria Eleonora was currently staying in Wolfenbüttel visiting her sister Duchess Anna Sofia of Braunschweig. The Electress now urged Axel Oxenstierna to travel to Wolfenbüttel and from there take the princess to Mecklenburg, where the Electress herself intended to go and then follow her daughter over to Sweden.

This plan was immediately put into action. They simply ran away. Maria Eleonora was thus early on involved in a romantic runaway adventure and therefore had a certain amount of experience when she later staged a similar event herself. However, the company succeeded very well. On September 16, Axel Oxenstierna left Wolfenbüttel in the company of the princess and her sister, who also accompanied them, then they met according to agreement with the Dowager Electress, and on the 25th they were ready to set sail from Wismar, where the Swedish ships were waiting.

Gustav Adolf met his bride in Kalmar, and on November 25 the wedding was celebrated in Stockholm. Maria Eleonora loved her husband very much — in life and after death, indeed after Gustav Adolf's death her admiration for him assumed such peculiar forms that one has rarely heard of anything like it.

However, we stop for a moment at the end of the hero king's life. In 1630, Gustav Adolf, as is well known, went over to Germany; Sweden's participation in the Thirty Years' War begins. But when the King was away, the Queen usually fell ill with longing for him, and she therefore decided to seek out her consort in Germany. In February 1631 preparations were made for her journey, but the equipment was very slow. The Queen cried and became impatient. Until May, she threatened to travel in her everyday clothes, if everything was not in order for the trip within 14 days. The Council became anxious about incurring the King's disgrace if the Queen took her threat seriously. It was like a foretaste of all the discomfort she would later cause.

The equipment was sped up as much as possible, but the departure could not take place until June. In Germany, Maria Eleonora stayed for ages in the same places as the King, but could not follow him everywhere during his campaigns. Through her presence, she enhanced the shine at Gustav Adolf's brilliant court in Mainz in the winter of 1632. In the autumn, she stayed for a time in Würzburg and intended to go from there to Rotenburg, but when the King had to turn north as a result of Wallenstein's incursions into Saxony, she traveled instead to Erfurt. From there she wrote a letter to Axel Oxenstierna, which deserves to be mentioned, because there one finds touching proof of her affection for her husband.

The main content of the letter is unremarkable; it is about procuring new clothes for the court ladies. But in a postscript in her own hand, the Queen thanks the Chancellor for directing her to become close to the King. "Nothing is dearer to me in this world", she says, "than as long as I live to be with His Royal Majesty, because without His Royal Majesty's presence I value nothing, not even my life."

This Maria Eleonora wrote three days before the battle of Lützen. The letter is dated Erfurt, November 3, 1632.

After Gustav Adolf's death, his body was first taken to a village near Lützen, then to Weissenfels, from there to Wittenberg and finally to Wolgast. Maria Eleonora came along and then stayed in Wolgast until the summer of 1633, when the body was transferred to Sweden.

It was not until December 8, 1632 that news of the Battle of Lützen reached Stockholm. It thus took more than a month before this extremely important news became known in the capital, an excellent proof of the poor communications of the time. The Council, which on the King's departure to Germany in 1630 was tasked with running the government during his absence, decided to continue with it for the time being. After all, Gustav Adolf's daughter Kristina was underage, and it was not yet known whether the King had left any will or any form of government. In addition, the Council decided to convene the Riksdag and to send Count Per Brahe to Germany, partly to offer condolences to the Dowager Queen, and partly to hand over to the Chancellor the Council's full power for him to lead Sweden's policy in Germany. Furthermore, field marshal Åke Tott and legate Sten Bielke, who had previously been out there, were tasked with assisting the Dowager Queen with rede and deed; in particular they were to ensure that foreign envoys were properly received.

On February 10, Per Brahe came to Wolgast, where he found the Dowager Queen "in the greatest weeping". She also vehemently complained that everything was interpreted so "incorrectly and wrongly", as if she had given away and wasted her own as things well as all those things left behind by the late King. During the investigation, which Per Brahe commissioned for this reason, he claims to have found that much was wrongly told and recklessly spread.

However, it seems obvious that the arrangement was not the best. The Council was informed of this at the end of February and then decided to send out "a man of reputation, authority and credit." To this, Gabriel Gustafsson Oxenstierna, Axel's brother, was appointed, and he was to be joined by the councilman Matthias Soop, "as he is used to ceremonies and otherwise light on his feet." Soop traveled in advance at the beginning of March. Gabriel Gustafsson took his leave from the the Council on April 6, ran into a "horrible storm" on the way out, and only arrived in Wolgast on May 10.

There, everything was found to be "in a pitiful state." The courtiers and the bodyguards had not received any salary for two months, the debts amounted to 12,000 riksdalers, and Gabriel Gustafsson believed that at least 40,000 riksdalers were needed in order to "with honour and reputation" be able to leave Wolgast. The worst thing, however, he writes to Axel Oxenstierna, is that Her Majesty is "very steadfast in her opinions." However, the Chancellor procured 30,000 riksdalers, and Mathias Soop managed to obtain a loan of 20,000 in Hamburg against the mortgage of the Crown's copper.

In the middle of July, things finally got organised. A squadron, consisting of 8 warships under the command of the Grand Admiral Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm, transferred the body of Gustav Adolf and the Dowager Queen from Wolgast to Nyköping.

The squadron arrived there at the beginning of August. Count Palatine Johan Kasimir, Gustav Adolf's brother-in-law, met Maria Eleonora in the archipelago, and on August 5 the royal body was ceremoniously placed in the Green Hall at Nyköping Castle.

The question of the time for the funeral now gave rise to the first clash between the Dowager Queen and the Council, which was also present in Nyköping. Already at the beginning of the year, Maria Eleonora had written to the Chancellor that she had learned how the Council back home intended to rush the funeral. But We want, she says, that the royal body, as long as God spares Us life, must not be buried under any circumstances. "As we have had rarely had the happiness of being near His Royal Majesty, our most highly honoured and late dear lord and consort, in life, then may it be granted to us that we may behold and enjoy his royal body reasonably for recovery during our sad lifetime."

Before leaving Wolgast, she had also regretfully requested that the King's body be left unburied during her lifetime, or that the burial be postponed for as long as possible. Immediately after arriving in Nyköping, she had the court preacher Johannes Matthiæ present the same request to the Grand Constable Jakob de la Gardie, who on August 6 reported the matter to the Council, where the Dowager Queen's outlandish ideas naturally aroused strong opposition. To wait with the funeral until Her Majesty's death, Johan Skytte considered it absurd and contrary to the 5th commandment: "thou shalt not kill." "Her Majesty then always thinks of dying and shortening her life."

Carl Bonde feared that if the burial was postponed indefinitely, many would therefore take cause to say that they had no fortune to allow His Royal Majesty's body to be buried. And Claes Fleming exclaimed: "Many will also think that His Royal Majesty was not dead."

In order to gratify the Dowager Queen in some measure, it was unanimously decided on August 9, however, that the burial should be postponed until February of the following year, and the Council attended her to, if possible, obtain her consent to it. But Maria Eleonora was dissatisfied and requested a four-week cooling-off period.

Then the Bishop of Linköping, Johannes Bothvidi, was sent to her. He found her very sorrowful, but tried to convince her by speaking in biblical language that it was contrary to the word of God to leave the dead unburied, and finally he succeeded in driving her so far that she said she would be satisfied if she could keep the body unburied for 1¼ years. But, of course, one could not be satisfied with such an answer, but the Bishop was sent to her once more; and finally, on August 21, he forced a kind of concession from her that the funeral would be allowed to take place.

On August 26, the council held its last meeting in Nyköping. But two lords, Axel Banér and Erik Ryning, remained with the Dowager Queen and received special instructions, according to which they were to try to convince her of the necessity to hasten the burial and to see to it that she did not visit the body too often.

Later in the autumn, a new dispute arose, namely about the grave site. The King himself had ordered that he should be buried at Gråmunkeholmen in Stockholm, and there they had already begun to prepare the grave, when the Dowager Queen, through the councilman Claes Fleming, had the Council greeted that she wished for His Late Royal Majesty's body to be buried in Uppsala, and that in that case the burial could take place when the Council pleased. This, of course, could not possibly be granted, just as little as the proposal Maria Eleonora then made, namely that the body should be taken to Strömsholm after the funeral.

However, the funeral was not completed in February, as intended. Only in mid-June 1634 was the body brought from Nyköping to Stockholm. The Riksdag was then assembled. Its main task was to definitively organise the government during Kristina's minority, and this also took place through a Form of Government, according to which the regency government would consist of the five high-ranking government officials. The vacant offices of Grand Steward and Grand Treasurer were filled; Gabriel Gustafsson Oxenstierna became the Grand Steward and Gabriel Bengtsson Oxenstierna the Grand Treasurer. That the Dowager Queen could be installed in the regency was apparently never considered by either Gustav Adolf himself or the Council or the Estates as a possibility, but that did not prevent her from feeling passed over.

On June 22, the funeral finally took place. But if the gentlemen in the regency and the Council thought that the matter was over, they would soon learn that this was a mistake. Two days after the funeral, on the evening of Midsummer Day itself, the Dowager Queen sent word to the Grand Marshal, Axel Banér, that she intended to go down to the monastery church and into His Late Royal Majesty's grave to open the coffin. However, this only had the consequence that the Council, after having obtained the opinion of the bishops, decided to take measures to prevent her from entering the tomb. The court master Adam Penz was summoned and strictly ordered to forbid Her Majesty's servants from removing the stones from the King's tomb without the regency's knowledge.

The Bishops of Linköping and Västerås, however, offered to go up to Her Majesty every other day and try to persuade her to give in to reason. But these regularly recurring admonitions apparently did not have the intended effect. For on July 11, the Grand Steward told the Council that the Dowager Queen had again requested to open His Late Royal Majesty's grave and coffin. Shortly afterwards, the Count Palatine Johan Kasimir also appeared, sent by Maria Eleonora with greetings that she wanted to place the King's heart in the coffin, which she was still keeping with her. But the Council was adamant, invoked the previously made resolution, and said that they feared that the Estates might become impatient; the lords therefore asked the Count Palatine to excuse them for not being able to grant Her Majesty's request; they did, however, offer to go down into the tomb with him and place the heart.

The Count Palatine seemed somewhat embarrassed to run errands for the Dowager Queen; he excused himself, it is said, that he had come to undertake this task by chance, "otherwise he would not do it willingly". He requested that some of the gentlemen would accompany him up to Her Majesty. Johan Skytte, Matthias Soop and Johan de la Gardie were appointed for this purpose.

When they came up, the Queen was in bed, for which reason only the Count Palatine was admitted. He now presented the Council's greetings. But Maria Eleonora replied: "When the Estates are at their ease, I will go in there and still keep His Royal Majesty's heart with me as long as I live".

After that, the Grand Constable was summoned, and the Queen told him that she could not calm down unless she could go and see His Late Royal Majesty's body, and that she could never let his heart go. The Grand Constable then repeated the reasons which made it impossible for the Council to gratify her wishes. It is evident that Maria Eleonora was now in such an agitated state of mind that she was hardly fully sane. In the morning she requested to be allowed to put the King's heart in the tomb, but in the forenoon of the same day she declared that she wished to keep it as long as she lived; her only thought or fixed idea was to see again the features of her deceased husband. But Axel Oxenstierna was probably right when he once said that she pursued this matter "ad fastidium usque" ["to the point of fastidium"].

The following day, the court chaplain Johannes Matthiæ reported that the Dowager Queen had ordered him to go down and say "that Her Majesty was quite resolved to go down to His Late Royal Majesty's body, the Senate must do what they wanted in the meantime".

This time the matter was taken quite calmly. The Council only referred to the answer given to the Count Palatine and added ironically that it would "give Her Majesty little reputation if Her Majesty were to go down to the church and could not enter; Her Majesty would then, with greater annoyance, withdraw from there."

But after Bishop Rudbeckius had learned that some people were actually afraid that the Dowager Queen would suffer a stroke if the Council stubbornly opposed her wishes, serious consideration was given to whether she should possibly be allowed to go down into the grave one time, but without opening the coffin.

Finally, it was decided not to publish the previously made resolution, and the Bishops were instructed to excuse the Council from the Dowager Queen. In addition, the clergy, at the request of the government, submitted a long report, "whether a Christian in good conscience can request and be allowed to open the tombs and coffins of the dead and to view and handle their bodies, thereby claiming to have some comfort and solace in his heart's great sorrow and grief."

It was, of course, proved there that such a thing was not permissible. But if Maria Eleonora felt convinced of this, we will leave it at that.

She had to give up the King's heart in any case, and it was then placed in the grave.

Engraved portrait of Kristina as a child in mourning for her father, by Fridericus Hulsius (Frederik van Hulsen/Friedrich van Hulsius) after Michel le Blon, and with an accompanying poem by Martinus Opitius (Martin Opitz), year 1633

Above: Kristina.

This engraved portrait (chalcograph), the first of Kristina as queen/king, is a variation by the Dutch Golden Age artist Friedrich van Hulsen (1580-1665) on an engraving originally by the Dutch-German court painter, engraver, publisher and art agent Michel le Blon (1587-1658), adapted from a painting (which likely no longer survives) by the Baltic German (Livonian) court painter Jakob Heinrich Elbfas (c. 1600-1664); which itself was commissioned by Sweden's Grand Chancellor and Kristina's chief regent, Axel Oxenstierna (1583-1654), in early 1633 — possibly in response to the initially skeptical peasant Lars Larsson's cry of "Who is the King's daughter? We do not know her, nor have we ever seen her"; in response to which Kristina was immediately carried in and presented to the man, who was finally convinced as soon as he saw her resemblance to her father to accept her as his new queen.

In this portrait, the six year old Kristina's long, prominent nose and the high, large and broad forehead — the facial features that most made her resemble her late father, Gustav II Adolf (1594-1632) — are emphasised to stress the family resemblance between them. She is depicted in a half-length pose, wearing a black mourning dress with a wide white collar and white cuffs, a white veil and wimple, and white gloves — and with a smiling but serene expression on her face (the late King also was depicted wearing broad collars in his own portraits). The "dignified" placement of her hands over each other and resting on her middle is meant to symbolise an appropriately "lady-like" piety and her already strong intellect.

It seems that Oxenstierna chose this portrait to be adapted specifically to the print medium for a reason. It was a way to introduce the young monarch to her subjects for the first time, as well as to announce and affirm her entry and position onto the European political stage. As her subjects would have expected (and in spite of her smile), Kristina is tactfully depicted in mourning for her father, and the portrait was also an announcement to any potential suitors from the royal and princely houses of Europe that she had now come into a position of power.

Le Blon's version of the portrait is kept at the National Museum in Stockholm, although it is not yet digitised on their website. In addition to Kristina's full title at the time, which is announced in a circular frame around the child herself, flanked by two angels, the one holding a laurel wreath and a crown and the other holding a palm leaf and a scepter — the traditional symbols of royal and divine power — this edition of the portrait includes a Latin poem by the German poet Martin Opitz von Boberfeld (1597-1639), which points out her resemblance to her father, her importance to her kingdom, to her mother, to the world and to Germany, and encouraging her to be herself as she grows up and lives her life.

The inscription and poem:

CHRISTINA D. G. SUECOR: GOTHOR: ET VANDAL: REGINA MAGN: PRINC: FINL: DUC: ETH: & CAREL: DOMINA INGRIÆ etc.

English translation (my own):

Kristina, by the grace of God, Queen of the Swedes, Goths and Vandals; Grand Princess of Finland; Duchess of Estonia and Karelia; Lady of Ingria, etc.

This child is the divine offspring and the image of her father,
The hope of the kingdom, the delight of her mother, the darling of the world.
So young!
Reader, the oppressed Germany needs her,
And a nation hostile to freedom fears her.
But thou, Daughter, who repayest thy father with thy countenance,
And who darest to repay the good,
Be only thyself as thou livest out thine years.

Dieselbe waren:

1. Der Reichsdrotset zu dem höchsten Gericht und Rechtssachen des ganzen Reichs, Gabriel Gustafsson Oxenstiern;

2. Der Reichsmarschalk zu dem Kriegswesen, Jakobus de la Gardie;

3. Der Reichsadmiral zu den Seesachen und Schiffahrten, Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm.

4. Der Reichskanzler zu den ausländischen Händeln, Krieg, Friede und Bündnisse betreffend, Axel Oxenstiern, anjetzo in Deutschland. Und endlich:

1. Le grand drost pour la Cour suprême et les affaires juridiques de tout le royaume, Gabriel Gustafsson Oxenstierna;

2. Le grand maréchal pour les affaires militaires, Jacques de la Gardie;

1. Riksdrotset för hela rikets högsta domstol och rättsliga frågor, Gabriel Gustafsson Oxenstierna;

2. Riksmarsken för militära angelägenheter, Jakob de la Gardie;

English translation (my own):

We reported on the state of the Kingdom of Sweden and its inhabitants last year. In particular, how the councilmen found it appropriate to call a Riksdag for this year, which was held with a full assembly of the Estates and with good consensus, because "misfortune and danger brings unity to the community".

The conclusion consisted of the following main points:

1. They remembered the Resolution of the Realm of 1627, when, in the event of the King's death without a male heir, they had agreed to accept his only legitimate daughter, Princess Kristina, as their queen and hereditary princess, and decided what they would do with her, promising to show all loyalty and obedience to her, under penalty of offending her majesty, against those who opposed her.

Whereupon they reaffirmed all the agreements and letters of renunciation made against King Sigismund and his heirs in Poland, as well as all their supporters, insofar as they also wanted to repeat the agreement made at Örebro.

2. They also promised to remain by the unchanged Augsburg Confession, but as contained in their synod at Uppsala.

3. Because the Queen is still a minor and cannot govern the kingdom, the heads of the five high offices are hereby confirmed as guardians of her royal person and of the administration of the kingdom's affairs. They were:

1. The Grand Steward for the highest court and legal matters of the entire kingdom, Gabriel Gustafsson Oxenstierna;

2. The Grand Marshal for military affairs, Jakob de la Gardie;

3. The Grand Admiral for maritime affairs and shipping, Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm.

4. The Grand Chancellor for foreign affairs concerning war, peace and alliances, Axel Oxenstierna, now in Germany. And finally:

5. The Grand Treasurer, who governs the chamber system, the State's income and its calculations, Gabriel Bengtsson Oxenstierna; so that all affairs of the realm could be conveniently divided and understood under these five colleges.

Although a certain Form of Government had been drafted and communicated to various Estates, with the announcement that the King intended to introduce it, however, because this had not been done during His Majesty's lifetime and the Estates as a whole had not been instructed on it, the arrangements made were left to stand for the time being. Queen Kristina, having come of age and seeing her power somewhat limited as a result, did not wish to enter into it either.

The war against the Emperor and the Catholic League in Germany was to be continued until a suitable, secure peace was achieved. To this end, the tender and arrangement approved last autumn were to be brought to fruition as effectively as possible.

Next to this, the previous excise taxes were continued, but the cattle tax was abolished, with the offer to sacrifice body, property and blood if necessary for the religion, for the Queen, and for the freedom of the Fatherland. With this, the Riksdag was concluded, and the decree was signed by the Council of the Realm.

The Grand Chancellor Oxenstierna's office within the realm, because he had to wait out the war in Germany, was to be administered by his brother Gabriel in the meantime.

Finally, it was decided that the royal body should be fetched from Germany and brought to its resting place in Sweden with royal honours. Two councilmen, Gabriel Oxenstierna and Matthias Soop, were dispatched from Sweden to Wolgast to accompany it. The Elector of Brandenburg and his wife, the Prince and Princess, the two Dukes of Mecklenburg and the Duke of Croÿ and their wives, as well as other high and distinguished men and women, came there in person to comfort the royal widow and to honour the transfer with their presence.

The royal body was brought with a considerable procession, in which the royal widow herself was present, onto a large ship covered with mourning drapes, and it was taken with a well-provided fleet, which landed at Nyköping, where the said body was laid down until everything could be prepared for a proper funeral.

Välborne Herr Kansler,
Broder och besynnerlige gode vän,

French translation (my own):

Bien né chancelier,
Frère et particulièrement bon ami,

English translation (my own):

Well-Born Lord Chancellor,
Brother and particularly good friend,
... For the rest, we have been visited by letters from Her Majesty the Dowager Queen on several matters; the most important ones have concerned Svartsjö and Her Majesty's dower estate, as well as the taxation of interest, which our Brother is particularly aware of from Her Majesty's handwritten letter enclosed herewith as a copy, under letter D.

However, as His Late Royal Majesty's decree here is in no way subject to change by us, especially since the dangerous consequences of such an event are to be feared, we have sent a response through Lord Axel Banér and Lord Erik Ryning, which is to be seen under letter E. of the memorandum we have sent them on this subject; and our Brother can undoubtedly and certainly consider from this how things are at home in this regard.

As for His Late Royal Majesty's funeral, we have been greatly disturbed by the fact that Her Majesty has not yet agreed to it, but has finally consented that it should take place at whatever time seems most convenient to us, only that, on the contrary to this, we want to assure Her Majesty that when the monument at Strömsholm, which she says she wants to have erected there, is completed, His Royal Majesty's body should then be transported from here to there.

On this we have only replied to Her Majesty in general terms and that upon our arrival in Nyköping we want to explain ourselves accordingly, so that Her Majesty will probably be most graciously satisfied with it. However, since much still needs to be arranged here, and we otherwise have our Brother's opinion on this, which we perceive to be inclined that it should best be celebrated this summer, we therefore think it should be held in the month of May or June. ...

Well-born Lord Chancellor, Brother and particularly good friend,
... Regarding the funeral of His Royal Majesty (highly laudable in memory), we have been delayed up to now by the fact that Her Majesty did not want to consent to it being done in a hurry, but she claimed that if we wanted to forcibly take His Late Royal Majesty's body, it was up to us, but at last Her Majesty eight days ago in Nyköping met me (Claes Fleming) and agreed that the funeral may be held at whatever time would be most convenient for us, as long as it takes place in Uppsala.

And notwithstanding that this no less has its difficulties, in what way Her Majesty can be persuaded from here, nonetheless if Her Majesty is comfortable with His Royal Majesty's last will about the place, we shall have done our diligence unsparingly therein; however, we do not see how the funeral can be carried out properly as long as the copper lies useless to us and as long as the means by which the ordinary state is maintained would be in it.

That our Brother will be more and more aware of a particular proposal about the copper state, for which lack of funds we have also not yet wanted to grieve Her Majesty with the determination of a certain time, we have nevertheless let it be said that the one for this coming February shall take place then; commending our Brother, etc.

Välborne herrar, bröder, svägrar, fränder och tillförlåtliga goda vänner,

French translation (my own):

Messieurs bien nés, mes frères, beaux-frères, parents et bons amis sûrs,

Axel Oxenstierna, m. p. ...

English translation (my own):

Well-born gentlemen, brothers, brothers-in-law, kinsmen and reliable good friends,
... Finally, about the Queen's dower estate, there is a reason that Her Majesty should be accommodated and the subjects be taken into her duty, however, in a manner so that the general oath and obligation to which they are bound to the young Queen and the Crown, and also the general contributions, discharges and assistances are excepted, because I do not remember more correctly than that they are excluded in the agreement about Her Majesty's dower estate.

Next to this, I still have to mention one thing to you: I learn from your letter that you have allowed the Russian envoys to have an audience with Her Majesty the Lady herself. I learn the same thing to have happened with the Holstein emissaries, as I have learned from one of their letters to their friends. Now, I let that solemnity have its value, and I would certainly not completely disapprove of it — however, so that you good gentlemen judge things and people correctly.

Her Majesty is first a minor and a child, then she is a female who is assisted and must be assisted by ladies, which, however convenient it always is, stands to serious matters there. When such a legation as a Muscovite one comes, and it requests an audience with the Queen herself, for the sake of the vanity and fancies of these nations, it is fully permitted, and when it happens, not without great ceremonies, so as to make Her Majesty's person and the state of the Realm all the more venerable. But not easily, and quite rarely.

For the rest, when such legates as the ones from Holstein arrive, they should not be brought before the Queen because it gives our present state contempt and gives others occasion to fancies. It was a legation that should have been heard only by the regency and did not need to be received with great solemnity because they were neither the persons nor was the appointment of such a nature that they had to be respected in that way. The person of our young Queen must be held venerable; and at the same time you must ensure that the government and its power will be inviolable and not abused in the young Queen's name, to the contempt of the government and the prejudice of the kingdom.

My duty to the Queen and to the Fatherland — and my trust in you — moves me to write this and remind you of it, otherwise I would not have done it; but I assure myself that you will not take this as displeasing and that you will do what you think is most reasonable herein. ... From Frankfurt am Main, August 4, 1633.
You good gentlemen's
faithful, servile brother, cousin, brother-in-law and friend
