The letter:
Stockholm le 13. Mai 1652.
Sitôt que j'ai appris vôtre arrivée en Hallande & l'empressement que vous aviez de continuer votre voïage jusques à ma Cour, j'ai voulu expédier le porteur de la présente pour vous servir de guide. Je lui ai donné encore une seconde commission, laquelle s'adresse à mon Bibliothecaire, lequel se trouve en votre suite. Je lui commande de retourner sur ses pas & de se rendre en Hollande pour y attendre mes ordres pour un plus long voïage. Je suis faché[e] que son inconsidération m'oblige de lui ordonner pour sa disgrace un voïage qu'autrefois mon service me lui a fait proposer. J'ai toûjours eu le dessein de l'envoïer en Angleterre & en Espagne pour faire des recherches pour augmenter & embellir ma Bibliothèque, mais dans ce tems-là je n'avois pas l'intention que j'ai maintenant, & je vous prie de croire que personne n'a travaillé à sa perte que lui-même, & vous trouverez mon humeur disposée de la sorte, qu'aucun ne pourra se vanter d'avoir le pouvoir sur mes inclinations. Elles se portent toûjours où je trouve le mérite, & quand l'on a eu part dans mon estime, je ne suis pas accoûtumée de m'en dédire, si ce n'est qu'on s'en rende indigne par quelque faute. Venez donc sans crainte & croïez qu'il n'y a personne qui estimera au plus juste prix votre mérite que moi

Je suis fachée que son inconsidération m'oblige de lui prescrire comme une disgrace un voyage que je lui ai proposé autrefois pour mon service. J'ai toujours eu le dessein de l'envoyer en Angleterre & en Espagne, afin d'augmenter & d'embellir ma Bibliothéque; mais depuis, mes intentions sont changées. Je vous prie de croire que personne n'a travaillé à sa perte que lui-même, & vous pourriez vous appercevoir en étudiant mon caractère, qu'aucun homme ne pourra jamais se venter d'avoir captivé mes desirs, ils se portent toujours où je trouve la vérité; & si quelqu'un m'a paru mériter mon estime, je ne la démens jamais, à moins qu'on ne s'en rende indigne. Venez donc avez confiance & sans crainte, & croyez que personne ne vous estimera plus véritablement que la Reine de Suede.

Så snart jag fick veta om Er ankomst till Halland och Er iver att fortsätta Er resa till mitt hov, ville jag sända denne brevvisare att tjäna som Er vägvisare. Jag har givit honom ytterligare ett uppdrag som är adresserat till min bibliotekarie, som är ju i Er svit. Jag beordrar honom att gå tillbaka och åka till Holland för att invänta mina order om en längre resa. Jag är ledsen att hans hänsynslöshet tvingar mig att för hans vanära beordra honom en resa som tidigare min tjänst fick mig att föreslå honom. Jag har alltid haft för avsikt att skicka honom till England och Spanien för att forska för att utöka och försköna mitt bibliotek, men på den tiden hade jag inte den avsikt jag har nu, och jag ber Er att tro att ingen har arbetat för hans fördärv men han själv, och Ni kommer att finna mitt temperament så inställt att ingen kan skryta med att ha makt över mina böjelser. As soon as I learned of your arrival in Halland and your eagerness to continue your journey to my court, I wanted to send the bearer of this present letter to serve as your guide. I have given him yet another commission, which is addressed to my librarian, who is in your suite. I am ordering him to retrace his steps and go to Holland to await my orders for a longer journey. I am sorry that his inconsideration obliges me to order him for his disgrace a trip which formerly my service made me propose to him. I have always intended to send him to England and Spain to do research to increase and embellish my library, but at that time I did not have the intention I have now, and I beg you to believe that no one has worked for his ruin but himself, and you will find my temperament so disposed that no one can boast of having power over my inclinations. They are always worn where I find the merit, and when one has had a share in my esteem, I am not in the habit of retracting it except that one makes oneself unworthy of it by some fault. Come therefore without fear, and believe that there is no one who will esteem your merit more justly than me.

Jag har alltid haft avsikten att skicka honom till England och Spanien för att öka och smycka mitt bibliotek; men sedan den tid har mina avsikter förändrats. I am sorry that his recklessness compels me to prescribe to him as a disgrace a trip that I once proposed to him for my service. I have always had the intention of sending him to England and Spain, in order to increase and embellish my library; but since then my intentions have changed. I beg you to believe that no one has worked for his loss except himself, and you could realize by studying my character that no man can ever boast of having captivated my desires, they always go where I find the truth; and if someone seemed to me to deserve my esteem, I would never lose it, unless one makes oneself unworthy of it. Therefore, come trust and do it fearlessly, and believe that no one will truly value you more than the Queen of Sweden.
