"Le Roi de France fut le premier à répondre à la proposition de Christine, qui se trouvant alors un peu indisposée, récrivit au Comte Gualdo (Lettere à Diversi le 24. Sept. l. c. p. 116.) de remercier S. M. T. C. de la faveur qu'elle lui avoit faite, & de lui représenter en même tems, que la Reine souhaitoit fort que ces Lettres du Roi fussent plus efficaces, c'est-à-dire que l'on fît comprendre au Roi de Dannemarc, aussi-bien qu'à la Ville de Hambourg, combien il seroit agréable à la Reine, que l'un & l'autre déférât à son desir, & qu'au contraire elle seroit mal satisfaite, si ses instances ne produisoient pas leur effet. Christine souhaita de plus, que ces Lettres de S. M. T. C. passassent par la Secretairerie dans la forme accoutumée, pour faire comprendre qu'elles avoient l'air d'un Conseil formé, & que le Résident Bidal eût ordre de se comporter dans cette négociation comme la Reine le jugeroit à propos: enjoignant au-reste au Comte Gualdo de se prévaloir du P. Annat, Confesseur du Roi, avec l'assistance de cet autre Jésuite que le Comte connoissoit (Ce Pére Jésuite, François Annat, est beaucoup loué par ses Confréres, à cause de son desintéressement, & plus encore par son ardeur contre les Jansénistes. Bayle observe, que si le petit Népotisme de la branche des Péres Confesseurs, étoit au plus bas degré à Paris du tems du P. Annat, le grand Népotisme de Rome étoit au-contraire à son comble (Dict. Hist. & Crit. Art. ANNAT.)), afin de faciliter d'autant mieux la réussite de cette affaire par leur moyen. ..."

"The King of France was the first to respond to Kristina's proposition, who, finding herself somewhat indisposed at the time, wrote back to Count Gualdo (Lettere a diversi, September 24, l. c., page 116.) to thank His Majesty the King for the favour he had shown her, and to represent to him at the same time that the Queen greatly desired that these letters from the King be more effective — that is to say, that the King of Denmark, as well as the city of Hamburg, be made to understand how agreeable it would be to the Queen if both of them deferred to her desire and that, on the contrary, she would be badly satisfied if her requests did not produce their effect.

Kristina further wished that these letters from His Most Christian Majesty should pass through the secretariat in the usual form, to make it understood that they had the appearance of a formed council, and that resident Bidal should have orders to comport himself in this negotiation as the Queen judged appropriate; enjoining, moreover, Count Gualdo to avail himself of Father Annat, the King's confessor, with the assistance of this other Jesuit whom the Count knew (This Jesuit Father, François Annat, is much praised by his confreres because of his disinterestedness, and even more so for his ardour against the Jansenists. Bayle observes that if the small nepotism of the branch of the confessor fathers was at its lowest degree in Paris at the time of Father Annat, the great nepotism of Rome was, on the contrary, at its height (Dictionnaire historique et critique, article Annat.)), in order to facilitate the success of this matter by their means. ..."

Une petite indisposition m'empêche de remercier personnellement Sa Majesté des lettres qu'il m'a envoyées au sujet de la religion, mais j'espère pouvoir le faire avec l'ordinaire futur.

Mais cependant, je désire que vous satisfassiez en mon nom à cette dette envers Sa Majesté, par des expressions telles que je lui paraisse singulièrement obligé de la faveur que je lui ai accordée; et en même temps, vous représenterez à Sa Majesté que les lettres seraient d'une plus grande efficacité si elles montraient clairement le plaisir que Sa Majesté aurait à se conformer à mon désir, et, au contraire, la mauvaise satisfaction si mes instances n'auront aucun effet.

Et je tâcherai aussi d'avoir pour le roi de Danemark ainsi que pour cette ville des lettres publiques du secrétariat dans la forme ordinaire et de la force et teneur susmentionnées; en outre, que Bidal soit ici ordonné d'agir en cette affaire de la manière exacte que je lui ordonnerai.

En liten opasslighet hindrar mig från att personligen tacka Hans Majestät för de brev han har skickat mig angående religionsangelägenheten, men jag hoppas kunna göra det med den framtida post.

Men emellertid önskar jag att Ni betalar denna skuld till Hans Majestät i mitt namn med uttryck som får mig att framstå som synnerligen tacksam mot honom för tjänsten; och samtidigt skall Ni framföra för Hans Majestät att breven borde vara mer effektiva om de tydligt visar den glädje Hans Majestät kommer att finna om han uppfyller min önskan och, tvärtom, den dåliga tillfredsställelsen om mina önskemål inte har någon verkan.

Och jag bör även försöka få offentliga brev från sekretariatet, i vanlig form och med den ovannämnda styrkan och innehållet, för Danmarks konung såväl som för denna stad; utöver detta, att Bidal här beordras att agera i denna fråga på exakt det sätt som jag kommer att beordra honom.

Emellertid, ordna dessa expeditioner, och begagna Er även av fader Annat, Hans Majestäts biktfader, genom den andra jesuiten Ni känner, så att avsikten bättre kan uppnås och breven kan utformas i en sådan effektiv form som önskas; och Gud välsigne Er osv.

A small indisposition prevents me from thanking His Majesty personally for the letters he has sent me regarding the affair of religion, but I hope to be able to do so with the future ordinary.

But in the meantime I desire that you satisfy this debt to His Majesty in my name with expressions such as will make me appear singularly obliged to him for the favour; and at the same time you will represent to His Majesty that the letters should be of greater efficacy if they clearly show in them the pleasure that His Majesty will have if he complies with my desire and, on the contrary, the bad satisfaction if my requests have no effect.

And I should also try to have for the King of Denmark as well as for this city public letters from the secretariat in the usual form and of the aforementioned force and tenor; in addition to this, that Bidal be ordered here to act in this matter in the exact manner that I will order him.

In the meantime, arrange for these expeditions, and also avail yourself of Father Annat, His Majesty's confessor, through that other Jesuit you know, so that the intent may be better achieved and the letters may be conceived in such an efficacious form, as is desired; and God prosper you, etc.

Nous avons reçu, Madame la bien née Marguerite Salvia, une lettre de votre part, dans laquelle, ainsi que dans certaines supplications soumises auparavant, Nous voyons et apprenons que vous êtes quelque peu préoccupée par Notre disposition des domaines en Allemagne, Wildenbruch et Hansfelde, que Nous avons assigné en paiement à Notre fidèle serviteur et facteur général, Pierre Bidal.

Ainsi, bien que Nous considérions que les bons et fidèles services que vous et votre feu mari Nous avez rendus ainsi qu'à la Couronne méritent que vous soyez quand même préférés à quelqu'un d'autre dans cette affaire, car, outre les raisons et causes importantes qui Nous ont été prouvées par Pierre Bidal de céder les susdits domaines et d'avoir pensé à autre chose, Nous supposons que vous ne trouvez pas cela si étrange, considérant d'ailleurs que, dans la grâce que vous éprouvez aussi qu'après le décès de votre feu mari, vous avez pu jouir et conserver ici en Suède la baronnie que Nous lui avons offerte et plus fidèlement et mieux; et vous n'avez pas connu beaucoup d'exemples de telles choses auparavant.

Nous montrons, et d'aucune autre manière à l'heure actuelle, à Bidal qu'il se contente des faveurs particulières que vous Nous aviez faites, à Nous et à la Couronne, il y a quelques années, par de grands et divers renforts qui ont finalement exigé que, sans trop tarder, Nous devions le payer ainsi pour maintenir davantage Notre crédit et celui de la Couronne. Comme Nous avons besoin de son service plus que nécessaire, Notre faveur et Notre grâce ne sont donc en rien moindres envers vous, mais puissiez-vous alors vous assurer en toute sécurité que Nous sommes et serons désormais aussi bien disposées envers vous dans tout ce dont vous pourriez avoir besoin de Notre assistance, faveur et grâce.

Vous ne devriez aussi penser qu'à ce que Nous apprécions grandement les bons et fidèles services que votre feu mari a rendus pour Nous et pour la Couronne auparavant, tout comme Nous aussi, de son vivant, avons non seulement tenu en grande valeur ses mérites, mais aussi, grâce à diverses avancées, ils ont fait en sorte qu'ils soient aussi connus que possible. We have received, well-born Lady Margareta Salvia, a letter from you, in which, as well as in some supplications submitted before this, We see and learn that you are somewhat worried about Our disposition of the estates in Germany, Wildenbruch and Hansfelde, which We have assigned in payment to Our faithful servant and general factor, Pierre Bidal.

So, although We consider that you and your late husband's good and faithful services to Us and the Crown merit that you should still be preferred to someone else in this case, as, apart from the important reasons and causes that have been proved to Us by Pierre Bidal to assign the aforementioned estates and to have thought of something else, We suppose that you do not find it so strange, considering besides that, in the grace which you also experience that after the death of your late husband, you have been able to enjoy and keep the baronetcy here in Sweden that We donated to him and more faithfully and better; and you have not experienced many examples of such things before.

We show, and in no other way at this time, Bidal to content the particular favours you had done Us and the Crown a few years ago with great and various reinforcements which finally demanded that, without long delay, We had to pay him thereby to further maintain our and the Crown's credit. As We need his service more than necessary, Our favour and grace are therefore towards you in no way lesser, but may you then safely assure yourself that We are and will be hereafter as heretofore well-inclined to you in all that you may need Our assistance, favour and grace in.

You should also think nothing more than that We greatly value the good and faithful services your late husband has done for Us and the Crown before this, just as We also, while he was alive, not only held his merits in great value, but also through various advancements made it so that they are as known as possible. Because We, through the abalienation of the often aforementioned property, have sought nothing but Our and and the Crown's service and honour to maintain, demand and promote it, every well-affectionate subject should not only find it good, but also willingly contribute everything possible to it, so We also want to hope that you, whose good affection towards Us and the Crown We have always experienced, would rather see that those estates were be for that than that they should in time fall to other private persons.

As for the reinforcements that both your late husband before his death and you subsequently have made to Us and the Crown, you may be assured that We are in every measure concerned for your satisfaction. We also want at the first opportunity to give orders to Our Councils of the Realm and Chamber; and if you could know of any proposal for estates with which you could be satisfied in payment, We would gladly let you be contented in that way, as also if the donation condition of the baronetcy needs to be improved if we are requested to do so, remaining always well-inclined to you with particular favour and grace; and We graciously commend you to God Almighty. But, not wanting to delay my journey, and fearing that the roads would not be clear for a long time, I left in February of the following year to go to Thorn, the first city of Royal Prussia, on the Polish side, where the King of Sweden had garrisoned after taking it, as well as the rest of the province, with the reserve of Danzig.
