Christine.

English translation (my own):

Kristina, etc.
Our especial favour, etc. As We eight days ago, Lord Admiral, ordered you to cease hostilities and to set out with your fleet homeward, leaving a party of ships behind you under Admiral Åke Hansson's conduct, that the people we have resolved to let go from Skåne to Germany should be transferred there; and because We have now since certainly heard that the peace was concluded on the 13th of this month, that the pacts were signed by the commissioners of both kingdoms, and that it has also been promised that the ratification shall be delivered at Markaryd on this coming September 13 which decree that Halland, with the fortresses of Halmsted and Varbjerg, will go to Us and the Crown of Sweden, but that Landskrone and Helsingborg with Skåne to the Danes, the which ratification shall be held on the 16th of this month, and all Our soldiers shall thereupon be out of Skåne and Bleking across the Swedish border on September 23 — except for what conditions may be further agreed upon, We will refrain from repeating them, in this haste and due to the shortness of time; We therefore do not want to change Our previous orders in any particular way, other than that We first ordered you that, on the return journey with the fleet, you occupy Visby and Gotland with a thousand men, as We did not know otherwise than that Gotland, Øsel and Jemtland would be annexed to Us and the Crown as soon as and at the same time as Halland.

Now, as We learn that the restitution of Gotland will not take place so soon, but is postponed until this coming October 31 next, and because We cannot believe otherwise than that Our commissioners have advised you from the border about it, We therefore want that when you come back here home to Stockholm with the greater part of the fleet, you should not concern yourself with besieging Gotland, so that you may occupy it with soldiers; but, as We still have enough time for that, We could also transfer the people from here or Kalmar in the month of October and thereby occupy Gotland.

Before you take your journey home with the fleet, leave and order Admiral Åke Hansson with 12 or 14 of the smaller ships to take up the infantry that was sent from Skåne over to Pomerania, which will be eight companies on horseback and twenty or twenty-four companies on foot. If General Wrangel could linger there so long that he were also to bring the same people over, We would gladly see it; and thus he could push on all the more strongly that the people would be brought from Skåne before or around September 23 and put on the ships and schuits to be transferred.

You will speak with General Wrangel about this and dismiss him; but if his journey or other necessary duties in Germany and especially in Holstein do not allow him to stay there for so long, but if he were necessitated to go first to Pomerania, both to prepare himself there for the journey and for the main army in Germany, as well as to give orders for the evacuation of the soldiers from Jutland and Holstein, which must take place on this coming September 30, only the fortresses there are to be preserved with Our garrisons until October 31; then, in that case, it is best that Admiral Åke Hansson, not only as an admiral of that fleet, but also as an old colonel, can transfer the people with order, discipline and care, since the regiments themselves also have their senior officers and subofficers with them.

Provisions for the same people can certainly be furnished from the storehouses in Skåne by the Field Marshal Lord Gustaf Horn, and one can bake and brew to take care of that need; but the most difficult thing will be about vessels for the transport of the cavalrymen. What boyers and smaller vessels there are in your fleet, as well as in the army, especially in Sølvesborg and Ysted, can be used and taken for this; and what is lacking, one must be set and filled by the vessels that We already chartered last spring in the Pomeranian cities and Wismar for the certain execution of Our designs, and General Wrangel knows all pertinent information about the same vessels. In Kalmar, two or three schuits have also been captured and can be used for this.

You will correspond about all this with the Field Marshal Lord Gustaf Horn and dismiss the General Wrangel and the Admiral Åke Hansson Ulfsparre, so that everything can be well and properly put into effect and the peace treaty fulfilled on Our side; and since We have found it good and have had so long to write to Wrangel and Ulfsparre, Our letters will also go to them enclosed herein; you will also forward them to them. God, etc.
Kristina.

Above: Kristina.

Notes: I refer to Halmstad and Varberg by their Danish names in the translations in light of the fact that Kristina implies in her letter of the same day to Carl Gustaf Wrangel that at least some of Halland was still pending "incorporation" into Sweden. Same for Blekinge and Jämtland.

I refer to Landskrona and Helsingborg (same in Danish) by their Danish names in the translations here in light of the fact that Skåne did not become Swedish territory until 1658.

Ösel (in Danish Øsel) is the old German and Swedish name for the Estonian island of Saaremaa.

Selsborg = Sölvesborg. I refer to Sölvesborg by its Danish name in the translations in light of the fact that Blekinge did not become Swedish territory until 1658.

Kristina, etc.

Christine.

English translation (my own):

Kristina, etc.
Our favour, etc. We wrote to you eight days ago, Lord General Carl Gustaf Wrangel, and ordered you to prepare yourself for the journey up to the main army in Germany, since, now that peace with Denmark had been concluded and hostilities must be suspended, the people had to be evacuated and the fortresses partly ceded and partly occupied on both sides. We are still constant in our resolution regarding your employment in the German army and military force, and We want you to prepare yourself for this so that you can undertake the march up there as soon as possible, and certainly at the beginning of the month of November.

And as We have resolved to now let out and transfer some soldiers from Skåne to Germany to be posted in the garrisons and other people to be drawn up, who, in addition to the troops now with Colonel Helmut Wrangel in Holstein, you can have with you up to the army stationed in the Emperor's hereditary lands, We would also gladly see that you could take the same people both on horseback and on foot with you from Skåne to Pomerania and to carry out what is necessary for their transfer — especially that vessels be provided on hand for the transfer of eight companies of cavalrymen and that in addition what schuits and boyers are in the large fleet with the Lord Admiral Erik Ryning and you, as well as with Lord Gustaf Horn in Sølvesborg or Ysted —; since you can correspond with the said Field Marshal and Admiral about this.

But because We rightly fear that you will also be able to stay here in Denmark for so long, as We find it very necessary to have some things done by you for the execution of the treaty in Jutland and Holstein, We have therefore considered it good that Admiral Åke Hansson transfer the same soldiers to Pomerania on the 12 or 14 smaller ships. We have ordered the Lord Admiral Erik Ryning to leave him to transfer the infantry and then be able to run under his conduct here to Sweden again after he had overseen the people, since the Lord Field Marshal Gustaf Horn on his side will also do what he possibly can so that the peace treaty is complied with in this article and so that all Our soldiers are out of Skåne on September 23.

This is primarily what we want to be done by you in the execution of the peace treaty there, namely because it has been decreed between the commissioners of both kingdoms that as soon as Halmsted and Varbjerg in Halland are accommodated and handed over to Us and to the Crown of Sweden, then the Lord Field Marshal Gustaf Horn shall give notice of it to Our commandant of the army stationed in Jutland and Holstein, with orders to immediately march and withdraw from Jutland, Schleswig-Holstein, Stormarn, Dithmarschen and the Comity of Pinneberg all Our soldiers who are in those lands with the least possible inconvenience, and that at the latest on this coming September 30 — however, in such a way that the fortified places and fortresses there will be preserved and retained in Our and the Crown of Sweden's hands until October 31, when they will be restituted therefor, and as you have been entrusted with the war against Denmark there in Holstein and Jutland.

So this Our gracious will and command to you hereby is that you first now and immediately keep the soldiers who are under Helmut Wrangel in Holstein and Jutland, as well as on Bornholm, in discipline and order and that you gradually begin to draw them all into Holstein; then also that you keep the people ready to march out of Holstein and into Germany as soon as you or Helmut Wrangel are informed of the surrender of Halmsted and Varbjerg by the Lord Field Marshal Gustaf Horn so that all Our troops may be over the border out of Holstein on September 30, with the exception of the fortresses and forts, many of which are occupied, which must not be restituted or abandoned until the last of October, and that you let the same soldiers go to some place up there where they can do better service, and you will be the first to be informed about this.

And then, when the people have thus marched off and started on their way out of Holstein, you must issue an order to the fortresses, Christianspris, the fort at Nystad, Pinneberg and several others that all pieces of ammunition and other supplies be brought from there to Wismar and that all the said fortresses, forts and fortified houses in Jutland, Schleswig, Holstein, Stormarn and Dithmarschen be thus handed over and occupied plenipotentiary by the King of Denmark, by the Duke of Holstein and by the nobility who have lost them until the last day of October — however, only the houses with the lands and people and nothing else.

On the same day, which is October 31, you must also accommodate the King of Denmark's plenipotentiary Hammershus on Bornholm with land and people; and if it so happens that the Danish people, in accordance with the wording of the pacts, will arrive a week or 2 or 3 before they are then accommodated on the land on the proper delivery day, which is considered October 31, as there is now great power incumbent upon Us and the Crown of Sweden to not commit anything against the departure, We therefore also trust in you that you will take this into due account, pulling the soldiers out of the Danes' lands before September 30, on Lord Gustaf Horn's notification and order — but the garrisons out of the fortresses Christianspris, Pinneberg, the fort at Nystad and whatever else is occupied by Our people, as well as from Hammershus on Bornholm on October 31, and in that way restituting them alone and solely into the hands of those concerned, as is said. We have not wanted to withhold this from you for your information. We commend you, etc.
Kristina.

Notes: I refer to Ystad by its Danish name in the translations in light of the fact that Skåne did not come Swedish territory until 1658.

Selsborg = Sölvesborg. I refer to Sölvesborg by its Danish name in the translations in light of the fact that Blekinge did not come Swedish territory until 1658.

I refer to Halmstad and Varberg by their Danish names in the translations in light of the fact that Kristina implies here that at least some of Halland was still pending "incorporation" into Sweden.

Pinneberg is a town in what is now the state of Schleswig-Holstein in northern Germany.

Christianspris, also known as Frederiksort, was a Danish fortification somewhat north of the then Danish city of Kiel in what is now the northern German state of Schleswig-Holstein.

The title of duke of Holstein was vacant between 1627 and 1647, but the next bearer of the title was the future King Frederik III of Denmark (1609-1670).

Nystad = probably referring to either Uusikaupunki or Neustadt, unless I am mistaken?

Hammershus is a medieval fortification at Hammeren on the northern tip of the Danish island of Bornholm. Swedish forces led by Carl Gustaf Wrangel had captured the fortress in June 1645. It was partially demolished in around 1750 and is now a ruin. It was partially restored in around 1900.

With modernised spelling:

Kristina, etc.

Kristina.

Postskriptum.
Såsom Vi, herr fältmarskalk, have uti denna Vår skrivelse förmält att Vi have gjort någon liten förändring på den disposition som Vi uti Vårt förra Eder tillskickade förslag om garnisonerna på Halmstad och Gotland have göra låtit, alltså försände Vi nu här bifogat ett annat förslag därpå, vilket I Eder till rättelse hava kunna; men vele likväl förvänta Edert betänkande häröver. Datum ut in litteris.

Christine, etc.

Christine.

English translation (my own):

Kristina, etc.
Our especial favour, etc. We have, Lord Field Marshal, received your letter, dated Skrevlinge on the 18th of last month, in which you, among other things, state how you have, upon your receiving Our commissioners' letter and notification that the peace between Us and the King of Denmark had been concluded, suspended your orders and undertakings and have deemed it necessary to remain in Malmø with the army to await further orders, requesting to also learn Our gracious will and resolution on one or two things that you remind Us of, particularly with what people the fortifications in Halland should be occupied and what commanders should be appointed thereto, as well as how they should be equipped and supplied; likewise also whether Fabian Berendes should continue with the recruitment of dragoons or discontinue it altogether; and finally, whether your company of cavalrymen, whose members have been taken from all regiments, should go to their former companies again, with what more your letter contains.

As a gracious response, it seems to Us most convenient, and we most graciously want, following the resolution you have taken, that you remain in Skåne with your soldiers and maintain the army there with discipline and order as far as possible until the ratifications are exchanged and the execution of the pacts has happened.

And as We last sent to you on the 19th of this month, along with Our letter, a list and proposal for the people who are to be sent to Germany as recruits and are to be garrisoned at the fortifications in Halland and other places, and as We do not doubt that you have now received the same proposal, so you will learn what disposition We have made here regarding this, only We have, in the meantime, changed Our former resolution regarding the regiment, which We now want to remain at Halmstad. And if that is not sufficient or does not remedy anything, then in addition as many companies and men as may be needed from another regiment, and that the Finns be placed on Gotland.

We are also now partly of the opinion that We want to appoint Caspar Otto Sperling as governor over all of Halland and Knut Lilliehöök, who is now governor of Åbo, as commandant at Varberg, and also either Gerhard Schaar or someone else at Laholm, whereupon We will explain Ourself further in the next post.

As for Halmstad's armament, We most graciously request that you leave there all the copper and iron pieces that are at Landskrone and Helsingborg, then all the field pieces, large and small, that you have with you in the field and, if something is missing, that you then have it taken from the fleet at Gothenburg or brought from Jönköping, and that all the ammunition and artillery that have been with you in the field or at the fortresses in Skåne be left there, and that these pieces and ammunition items, according to your given proposal, can be brought by sea from Landskrone, where they will be stored until Halmstad is occupied, which We, at your own disposition, have requested and committed.

Varberg must be equipped with the fleet at Gothenburg and supplied with ammunition and artillery. If there are also some provisions in victuals or grain at Helsingborg and Landskrone or Sølvesborg or any other place that is to be restituted, and if the Danes want to make an exchange with what is in Halmstad or Varberg, then We hold it good that you do so. But if the Danes do not want to allow it, then each one will have his own brought out, namely from Landskrone, Helsingborg, Tommerup and elsewhere to Halmstad and Varberg and from Sølvesborg to Kalmar.

If you also in the meantime, as the army is being transported, will be able to have brewing and baking done in order to provide for the people who are going over to Germany, it would be very good, as We do not doubt that you will make early care of this, so that the same people may take as much provisions with them as they can help themselves across the sea with. For the rest, We want to bring the burden here forth and so arrange that they will be provided and helped with clothing.

For the transportation of the rest of the people out of Skåne and in across the border, We graciously consider and most graciously want that half of it go through Västergötland and half through Småland, and that on several and those roads which can give the country and the common people can the least trouble; and good officers must be appointed as prestavs and be commanded with sharp seriousness to diligently see to it that they travel with order and good discipline and to prevent, as far as possible, that any one, either officers or common soldiers, cause any inconvenience to Our subjects on the way, unless the prestavs themselves or the other officers be willing to answer for it and obliged to do so if such a complaint is made.

We also cannot fail to recommend to you that you give an early reminder to those who are responsible for the transport and provision of schuits and suitable vessels at their convenient locations by the army for the transfer of the infantrymen and horses to Germany, so that nothing should be lacking.

Concerning your company of cavalrymen, about which you ask how it should be maintained, then, as it has been taken from all the regiments and it now seems somewhat considerable to Us to use it in some other place for a particular company, particularly because it can always be gathered again if it is needed, you may let each and every man of the same cavalry go to their former companies and regiments again.

We also certainly do not need now the dragoons that Fabian Berendes has recruited, but We have partly been resolved to have them discharged; but because they have enjoyed the current year's pay and maintenance, those whom he has already recruited and raised may remain in the service until further notice; but Berendes is instructed not to recruit any more hereafter, but to cease all further recruitment altogether.

As for the last Hylte fort at Markaryd, about which you ask whether it should be demolished or maintained after the army's withdrawal from Denmark, because We do not know what kind of work it is and whether it can be of use to the defense and benefit of Our borders and country, We cannot fully declare Ourself on this point, but We leave it to your own judgement, only insofar as We have been told about its condition and location here. It seems best to Us that it remain standing and that it be provided with the necessary garrison until one is able to see and consider how it can be of use to the country. As for everything else that may be worth reminding and recommending to you, you will have to expect from Our further order; and We hereby want to have commended you to God, etc.
Kristina.

Postscript.
Because We, Lord Field Marshal, have mentioned in this Our letter that We have made some small change to the disposition that We had made in Our previous proposal sent to you regarding the garrisons at Halmstad and Gotland, We have now sent here enclosed another proposal, which is for your information; but We nevertheless want to expect your consideration on this. Dated as in the letter.
Kristina.

Leben der Weltberühmten Königin Christina von Schweden nach denen geheimesten intrigven und merckwürdigsten umständen mit möglichstem fleiße entworffen, pages 15 to 30, by Christian Stieff, 1705; original at the University of Michigan

The account:

With modernised spelling:

English translation (my own):

The beginning of her reign was immediately made famous by the Peace of Brömsebro, which she concluded with the Crown of Denmark and which was so advantageous to the Crown of Sweden. This peace was concluded on August 13, 1645, through the mediation of the Crown of France, and in which Jämtland and Härjedalen, together with the islands of Gotland and Ösel, were ceded to the Swedes forever, but the province of Halland for 30 years.

This was followed several years later by the peace with Germany, which was concluded at Osnabrück, in which Sweden received the bishoprics of Bremen and Verden, the principality of Rugia, the duchy of Fore Pomerania, and from Farther Pomerania Stettin, Damm, Gollnow, the entire Oder river including the banks on both sides, and the expectation of the rest of Pomerania after the demise of the electoral and princely house of Brandenburg, as well as the dominion of Wismar, including the counties of Poel and Neukloster and the fort called Walfisch, as a fief of the realm for satisfaction, and more than 5 million riksdalers were paid to pay her militia.

Meanwhile, despite the many cares of ruling, she did not neglect to amuse herself with studies and all kinds of charming sciences, for which purpose she sought out the most curious books and scripts with great diligence and expense, and among other things she sent Mr. Ludolf to Rome at her own expense so that he could try to find any of the old letters that Johannes Magnus, Archbishop of Uppsala, had taken with him in the previous century when he left Sweden for religious reasons. She also had the rarest codices brought to Sweden from the places conquered in Germany.

In addition, she acquired a large quantity of the finest coins, to which she added Luckius' famous cabinet, which she bought for herself, and the magnificent medals which were captured from the imperial cabinet there at the time of the conquest of Prague — a great contribution, although it is believed that Monsieur du Fresne Trichet, whom she had put in charge, did not look after her very faithfully in this regard, but rather many of the most curious, along with many excellent paintings by the most famous artists, under the pretext that one had cajoled the Queen into getting rid of them due to their bad importance and dragged them along to France.

Moreover, she also summoned a large number of the most distinguished people to Sweden, among them the world-famous Saumaise, Isaac Vossius (whom she did not want to admit at first because he had written against Saumaise), Nicolaus Heinsius, Samuel Bochart, Gabriel Naudé, Johann Freinsheim, Johann Heinrich Boeckler, René Descartes and others.

The famous Ménage and Gui Patin were also invited, but they excused themselves, although the former initially seemed in his eclogue, to which he gave the title Kristina, to be saying goodbye to France and already preparing to travel.

Saumaise later suggested Bourdelot as the other candidate, but he did not hesitate to go to Sweden. This man, of whom much will be said later, was the son of a barber from Sens, and was actually called Michon. In his youth he had also studied the apothecary art, later travelled to Italy and then posed as a doctor, claiming that he was in charge of this function under Pope Urban VIII, and would even have been made a cardinal if he had wanted to stay longer and not rushed back to France, which very few people would believe.

He took the name Bourdelot from one of his uncles, who, among other things, left him a rather fine library, valued at 3,000 Reichstalers. He claimed to be extremely learned and especially regarded as an excellent poet, but very few of his countrymen were willing to grant him these qualities; rather, one sees that Monsieur Chevreau puts him in the same class as Pelletier, Neuf-Germain and other buffoons because of his poetry — indeed, some have wanted to assure that he could not write three lines of Latin without making a mistake, which I will put in its place.

I will not examine here whether he made as little of a show of religion as some blame him for, but I will only remind you that this man, through his flattery, insinuated himself so deeply with the Queen that not only the famous Naudé, but also Monsieur Courtin, who was secretary to the Queen and who was in great favour before Bourdelot's arrival, fell into disgrace and returned home — indeed, that even the noblest men of the kingdom had to flatter him, of which more will be said in the future.

So that she could now speak with these learned people, she held a public conference every Thursday, which she therefore used to call Jovial, in which all kinds of curious matters were discussed.

Under these circumstances, and since the Queen displayed such a great affection for learned people, there was reason to be surprised that she behaved quite differently toward the incomparable Hugo Grotius, who had previously served as royal Swedish ambassador in France. Not only did she recall him from his previous embassy some time after her accession to her reign, but she also subsequently uttered all sorts of peevish words at the farewell audience she granted him before his departure from Sweden. To these, however, this excellent man offered no further response than to make a profound bow and say: "Madame, I remain Your Majesty's most humble servant", and he thus departed.

This coldness so irritated the Queen that it even made itself heard by those around her; it would nevertheless be a great impoliteness that he had not even taken leave of her. However, a well-known Frenchman named Marigny, who was present at the time and, by all appearances, was quite affectionate to Grotius, excused him and persuaded the Queen that it was the fashion in France to take leave with such words; so she finally believed him and sent Grotius a gift of more than 13,000 dalers in copper.

However, the great affection she showed toward the other persons just mentioned did not last very long, but she soon grew weary of them because they seemed insufficiently gallant to her. Therefore, most of them, such as Saumaise, Vossius, Bochart, Freinsheim, Boeckler, and others, departed one after another rather disgruntled. Although several of them had been promised an annual stipend upon their departure, this was not properly paid afterward.

Bourdelot alone remained with her for some time in his former favour, despite the fact that her royal lady mother; Count Palatine Karl Gustav, who had been declared her future successor; Count Magnus de la Gardie, and most of the councilmen, along with the whole clergy, were utterly hostile to him, partly because they suspected him of leading the Queen into all sorts of evil thoughts about religion and the Word of God, and partly and especially Count Magnus, because Bourdelot was said to have spoken slanderously against the Queen through him. However, the Queen was once so taken with this man that for a long time she would not accept anything that was said against Bourdelot; indeed, she even disgraced Count Magnus de la Gardie for it and accused her own natural lady mother of evil on his account.

For when, on the advice of several councilmen, she dared, before her departure to Nyköping, to persuade her and represent to her how the clergy and all the people complained about Bourdelot and were worried that he would teach her maxims which could not be in harmony with the religion of her forefathers; although she (the lady mother) did not want to hope that, after the Queen's natural father, the great Gustav Adolf, had so famously confessed and defended it, and had even sacrificed his life for it, she would now allow the Queen to be persuaded to do anything that did not agree with it.

She had listened to her patiently for a while, but when the sermon seemed to be going on too long, she interrupted her and replied that she felt a sense of solidarity with her lady mother for her well-intentioned warning; but that this matter was too difficult for both of them, and it would therefore be better to leave it to the priests. And when they were about to begin again, she said with an angry mien that she knew very well those who had persuaded her to make such statements, and she wanted to teach them who she, the Queen, was, so that they would surely repent of their thoughtlessness.

Whereupon she left. Even when two hours later one gave her to understand that her lady mother was crying so much and would not let anyone see her, she replied quite coldly: "It's her fault; why has she brought this annoyance upon herself?"

However, several hours later, when it was told her that her lady mother would not at all let herself be satisfied, she visited her again and treated her very kindly without mentioning what had happened, which did calm her down somewhat, but she nevertheless continued her journey to Nyköping.

Because the Queen took Bourdelot under such zeal, his enemies were unable to remedy her situation for a considerable time. Indeed, they had to suppress the hatred they harboured against him and caress him in every way in order to please the Queen. Among other things, it has been observed that almost all the grandees sent him such lavish New Year's gifts at the beginning of 1653 that they totaled over 20,000 dalers. Indeed, when he fell ill shortly after the quarrel between the Queen and her mother concerning him, all the most distinguished people at court, including the Queen herself, visited him.

Finally, because he was hated by everyone, the Queen had to decide to give him his dismissal in order to avoid greater misfortune, whereupon he returned to France; after the Queen had given him an abbey with an annual income of 2,000 dalers, which she had recently arranged for him in France, and after he had left, she also gave him 10,000 dalers in cash and 20,000 dalers in bills of exchange, along with a letter of recommendation to the Queen of France, and she had him brought to the borders of Denmark in one of her carriages.

Thus, Count Palatine Karl Gustav himself and his brother Johan Adolf [sic], despite being his worst enemy, had, out of love for the Queen, presented him with her portraits, the first of which was valued at 2,000 and the other at 1,000 dalers; although this had been so difficult for Count Palatine Karl Gustav that he spent a whole day before he could decide to do it, until finally one of his closest friends reminded him that he would greatly anger the Queen, to whom he had once promised to do this, if he were to retract it, so that he had therefore finally overcome his fear.

How much everyone at court had to show regard for him is clearly evident from the following incident, which is known to few. Monsieur Bourdelot had arranged for old Marcus Meibomius, who imagined himself to have a special understanding of ancient music, on which he had written a learned work, and who was then the Queen's librarian, to sing a concert of ancient music in the Queen's presence, and for Naudé to dance to it.

But because Meibomius had a bad voice, which caused much laughter, he became so furious that he dragged Bourdelot, whom he believed to be responsible, to the library, called him an ignoramus, and even punched him in the neck. But when Bourdelot complained to the Queen, she asked him why he had not had the pageboys throw him out the window; and Meibomius had to quit his position as librarian and quit Sweden.

But as soon as Bourdelot had turned his back, the great grace was gone; and the Queen spoke of him in the most disgraceful manner, so much so that when she received a parcel from France and found a letter from him inside, she did not even open it, but held it up to her nose and said: "Ugh, how it stinks of medicine!", and then threw the letter away.

Indeed, when she soon afterward sent Monsieur du Fresne to France on account of some matters she had previously discussed with Bourdelot and promised him the direction of, she expressly forbade him from communicating anything with Bourdelot about them, because she absolutely did not want to have anything more to do with that man. But the principles he once taught the Queen about religion and other matters were more than well received and, to everyone's consternation, have become more and more apparent.

Among other things, it has been claimed that she held the following:

One should love God as the origin and source of all good; but one should not fear Him, because it does not make sense to fear such a being who is inherently good and can do no evil. But one should fear evil men, who can damage one's neighbour's honour, life, and property in a thousand different ways, and these are the real devils whom the common people so stiffly and firmly believe in.

A prudent person should never regret anything nor forgive, because both involve inconstancy. One should consider carefully beforehand what one intends to do, but one should never change a conclusion once formed. The peculiar opinions are the very best, because the common ones are mostly corrupt and tainted with all kinds of superstitions and errors.

What is called religion is a mere deception, because people want to be deceived once in a while. It would be impossible for a belief that blinds the eyes and forbids reflection and reasoning to be true; and why should one believe what one cannot comprehend with reason, and why even make oneself obliged to believe it?

That would be like asking people to put out their own eyes in order to see better. So many different sects, spread throughout the four corners of the world, would be merely the dreams and fantasies of a few people, who had created them partly out of naïveté, partly out of mischief, so as to make a great name for themselves.

Plato's opinion of the universal soul of the world, of which the human soul is a part, was so probable that it was unsettling. Why did all scholars accept it? For her part, she believed in no other immortality of souls than that which resides in this universal spirit, to which others return after their death.

Moses was as great a deceiver as he was a prudent man, and she dared to assert that the miracle attributed to the Israelites' passage through the Red Sea was a false pretense and that everything had been caused by the ebb and flow of the tides, of which property of the sea he had good news.

Now, I will leave it open whether all this is actually true. However, it is more than certain that she otherwise had strange opinions about religion; and this can be inferred, among other things, from the discourse she had with her lady mother shortly before she gave up the government.

For when it was reported at the table in Nyköping that General Fleetwood's wife, who had been devoted to the Augsburg Confession and had also raised her daughters with him in that faith, had died, and the General was determined that his daughters should henceforth be raised in the Reformed religion, the Queen had at first said: "It would be a shame for the poor children that they should be deprived of their salvation in this way."

When the widowed Queen replied that she believed that one could also be saved in the Reformed religion if one otherwise lived a pious and godly life, the Queen replied that she (the lady mother) would not be a good Lutheran if she believed this; but she was not surprised by this, for since her lord father had been devoted to the Reformed religion, one could easily imagine that she still inwardly inclined towards it.

This reproach annoyed the widowed Queen so much that she replied with some vehemence that she was indeed a good Lutheran and wished for nothing more than that she, the Queen, should be as well as she was, or at least that she should not have a worse opinion of religion than, say, the Reformed; but one should have sensed for some time that she had made such statements that were not in harmony with the Lutheran religion; and she did not believe that if her lord father, King Gustav Adolf, were still alive, she would have been allowed to make such statements.

To this the Queen replied: "I am sorry that he is dead; but I am assured that if he lived, I would have done him justice for what I have said."

"And what would my Lady Mother think if I said (as many assure) that all people will be saved, both them and the Christians?"

The widowed Queen was so distressed by this discourse that she spent almost the entire night weeping. Otherwise, after taking over the government, she [Kristina] showed herself extremely jealous of her authority, and therefore she insisted that foreign ministers should present their proposals directly to her. Moreover, she also knew how to use the dissension and emulation [jealousy, rivalry] among the grandees to strengthen her authority, and she absolutely refused to allow her people to be in any way beholden to other potentates.

Therefore, among other things, she did not want to allow Count Palatine Karl Gustav to accept the Order of the Garter, which the King of England intended for him, or Count Magnus de la Gardie to allow himself to be made a prince of the Realm.

In this respect she imitated Queen Elizabeth of England, of whom it is said that when King Henry IV of France admitted two English noblemen, Nicholas Clifford and Anthony Shirley, into the Order of St. Michael for the good services they had rendered him during the internal wars at that time, she had them imprisoned upon their return and compelled them to return the chain of the Order and to have their names blotted out from the register of the Order, on the grounds that, just as an upright woman should fix her eyes on no one but her husband, so too should a subject look on no one but his rightful overlord, and she could not at all tolerate that her sheep should be marked by a strange hand or should follow the pipe of another shepherd.

It was probably this jealousy of her authority that led to her firm resolution never to marry, despite the fact that, as is easy to believe, she had no lack of opportunities.
