Serenissima Imperatrice,
Signora Sorella mia amatissima,
Di Vostra Maestà
affettuosissima Sorella.
Scritta di pugno di Sua Maestà.

French translation (my own):

De Votre Majesté
la très affectionnée Sœur.
Écrite de la main de Sa Majesté.

Swedish translation (my own):

Durchlauchtigste Kejsarinna,
Ers Majestäts
tillgivnaste Syster.
Skrivet i Hennes Majestäts hand.

English translation (my own):

Most Serene Empress,
Madame my most loved Sister,
Your Majesty could not share your grief for the loss of your brother, Signor the Duke, who is in Heaven, with anyone who feels it with greater tenderness than I, who profess to Your Majesty such great affection and such sincere friendship that I will always consider your misfortunes as my own. In the meantime, in proportion to these my expressions, I pity you, and as Your Majesty knows how to conform to the Divine Will, I, without using any term of consolation, proceed to thank you (as I vividly do) for the office and to pray to God for the restoration of true felicities. From Rome, September 19, 1665. —
Your Majesty's
most affectionate Sister.
Written in Her Majesty's hand.

Notes: In accordance with the nobility's ideals in the early modern era, kings and queens considered themselves siblings.

It is not known for certain exactly how Carlo Gonzaga died. Contemporary and immediately subsequent historians have suspected that he was poisoned, perhaps by his wife Isabella Klara and her lover, Count Francesco Carlo Bulgarini. Other sources say that Carlo became overintoxicated by one of the aphrodisiac concoctions he took to increase his vigour. He was just 36 years old. Carlo was succeeded by his 13 year old son, Ferdinando Carlo Gonzaga (1652-1708).

French translation (my own):

20, samedi.

20, Saturday. After having had breakfast at Isola della Scala, we departed a little before noon under a rainy sky, and we arrived at night by the Ponte Molino. There we stopped for about three hours in the passage of the Po to cross to the ducal castle of Roveré, situated on the opposite bank. A courier overtook me between Isola and Nogara with a letter. I sent the ambassadors and messengers of Bentivoglio out before midnight with the response. The Queen was received at a most splendid dinner by the Duke of Mantua and the Archduchess, his wife; all the company were also received with great joy.

The diary entry:

French translation (my own):

13, samedi.

English translation (my own):

13, Saturday. In the morning I visited the Baron von Firmian; I left at about eleven o'clock in the afternoon, a little before the Queen, and in the evening we reached Egna, which is called Neumarkt by the German inhabitants. There came a courier from the Duke of Mantua, inviting the Queen to enter that city and be entertained by him; the Duke had sent the commander of the Praetorian cavalry. The Queen politely refused and said that it was not permissible for her to deviate from the public road in her direct route to Rome, nor was it clear which way the Venetians were to be prescribed; I talked with the courier about constituting the distance between the journey and Ferrara.

The letter excerpt:

English translation (my own):

A few days ago we made a very nice journey to Auxerre to see the Queen of Sweden there incognito, which we did, my wife being demoiselle to the Marquise de Mouy, and I her squire. This queen having recognised us, and not wanting to show it, gallantised us very much, and even the Marquise de Mouy, on what she knew so well how to choose her world, and very low, approaching us, made us a thousand civilities and particularly to my wife, to whom she testified most obligingly in the world the sensitive displeasure she felt at not being able to give her, in the state in which she saw us, the marks of the esteem and affection that she had for her, of which, however, she begged her to be very assured, and told us a hundred thousand other gallantries with very good grace. All her postures are masculine and not feminine. The most agreeable praise one can give her, therefore, is to tell her that she is the most honest man in the world. She is very fond of beautiful women. She found one in Lyons that she liked. She kissed her everywhere: on the throat, the eyes, and the forehead very amorously, and she even wanted to put her tongue in her mouth when kissing her, and she wanted to sleep with her, which the woman did not want. Monsieur de Guise has presented her with three of his wigs, of which she always wears some with a feathered hat, which she always holds in her hand when speaking. She wears a justaucorps and a cravat. She has no women who appear with her, and even only a few men. That, Monsieur, is what we have seen on this little journey.
