Wår allernådigste Drottnings Proposition, förestäldh Rixens Ständer, som på Rixdagen woro försambladhe i Ubsala, den 11 Maij 1654.
Såsom H:s Kongl. Maij:tt hafwer för gått och rådsampt befunnit, för särdeles orsaker, att kalla Rixens Ständer för denne tijdh tillsamman, och the sigh ther oppå hörsambligen instält hafwe; Så hafwer Hennes Kongl. Maij:tt sigh där öfwer att frögda och hugna, att den aldrahögste Guden hafwer wårt käre fäderneslandh för alla åliggiande fahrligheeter så nådeligen conserverat, enkannerligen för den smittosamme siukdomen Pestilentzien, som förledne Höst hafwer sigh på någre orther yppat och itändt, och nu mehrendels cesseradt, så att man nu säkert kan komma tillsamman och H:s Kongl. Maij:t sine trogne undersåthere widh hälssa och gått tillståndh finner och åskådar. Där öfwer wij hafwe orsak den gode Guden icke allenast en underdånig tacksäijelsse att hembära, uthan än ytterligare till bedia, att han sitt faderlige rijs och straff här effter nådeligen lindra och afwäria wille.
Sammaledes hafwer H:s Kongl. Maij:tt hugneligen till att förnimma, att dee swåra och dyra tijder och förledne ofruchtsamma åhren uthi ymnigheet och godh åhrswäxt ähre förwandladhe, så att icke allenast förledne åhr hafwer warit fullt medh Gudz wälsignelsse och fruchtsamheet på allehanda jordenes gröda, uthan ock nu, thess Gudi wari tack och loff, sigh så anlåter, att wij för ögonen ett liufligit och fruchtbart åhr hafwe till förmoda. Däruthaf Gudz store godheet och omwårdnad om oss och wårt käre fäderneslandh yttermehre ähr till att spöria och medh innerlig ödmiuk tacksäijelsse att upptaga och erkänna.
H:s Kongl. Maij:tt påminner sigh ock i lika måtto, och hafwer det sine trogne undersåthere nådigst till berätta, att såsom fäderneslandet inn om dess gräntzer sigh uthi ett gått och rooligt tillståndh befinner; Så ähr thedh ock genom Gudz försyn och Hennes Kongl. Maij:tz trogne omwårdnadh uthi thesse fahrlige tijder, och der kriget och dess fahrligheeter hafwer swäfwat omkring oss på alla sijdor, så wijda erhållit, att wij hafwe kunnat sittia i roo och säkerheet, och oss uthi andres trättor och olägenheeter inted beblandat. Till den ända H:s Kongl. Maij:tt hafwer sigh beflijtat medh sine naboer och grannar all godh wänskap och förståndh att oppehålla och cultivera.
Ty hwadh naboskapet medh Danmark widkommer, så hafwer Hennes Kongl. Maij:tt på den sijdan intet annat än fridh och wänskap att förmoda, och hafwer icke heller till något annat gifwit den ringeste orsak och anledning.
Sammaledes lefwer Hennes Kongl. Maij:tt uthi gått förståndh medh Storfurstendömet Rysslandh, och hafwer igenom sine Commissarier låtit arbeta oppå att slätta och afhiälpa dee gräntzestrider och andre differentier, som hafwa kunnat wara Hennes Kongl. Maij:tt och den Staten emellan. Och ändoch be:te Storfurste hafwer emoth Chronan Pålandh hafft en krigzexpedition för händer, och genom sina uthskickade nyligen justificeradt emoth Hennes Kongl. Maij:tt sine skääl och orsaker där till, så ähr thedh doch en saak, som Hennes Kongl. Maij:tt och Chronan intet angår och wijdare till befara, än att man på all fall och händelsser håller sig i beredskap och vigilerar oppå deres förehafwande actioner.
Medh Konungen och Chronan Pålandh continueres dedh Sex och Tiugu åhrs stilleståndhet uthan förandring; Och ehuruwäl Hennes Kongl. Maij:tt gärna hade sedt, att dedh uthi en ewig fredh hade kunnat förwandlas, och till den ända genom Mediatorers och sine egne Commissariers flijt twenne reesor där öfwer uthi Lybeck låtit arbeta, så hafwer det doch alt här till intedh kunnat drabba till hopa. Doch hafwer H:s Kongl. Maij:tt så mycket förnummit, att man på Pollnische sidan intet wore obenägen samma fredztractat på en annan tijdh opptaga och reassumera, så att H:s Kongl. Maij:tt om dess ändtlige success framdeles icke aldeles despererar.
Medh Keysaren och Romersche Rijket hafwer H:s Kongl. M:tt, alt sedan freden ähr slutin och exequeradh i Tysklandh, oppehållet godh wänskap och correspondentz, håller ock där sina Gesantter, som på Rixdagen i Regensburg på Förstendömen Brehmen, Vehrden och Pommerens wägnar hafwa sine säthen iblandh dee andra Rixens Ständer och H:s Kongl. Maij:tz tiänst och interesse taga i acht. Och hafwer H:s Kongl. Maij:tt, till ändtlig fullbordan af Tyske freden, hafft för händer genom en anseenlig Legation att taga investituram af Keysaren på dee nys acquireradhe länder i Tysklandh.
I lijka måtto sitter H:s Kongl. Maij:tt i gått förtroende medh Frankerijke och Spanien, och intedh underlåther hwadh som till erhållande af godh wänskap och alliance på dee orther kan requireras. Doch frögdar sigh H:s Kongl. M:tt i synnerheet där öfwer, att det fahrliga kriget i Wästersiöen emellan dee mächtige Republiquer Engellandh och dee föreenadhe Nederlanden, uthaf hwilkedh icke ringa olägenheet i wåre commercier war till befruchta, nu ändtligen synes wara ändat och bijlagt, och thedh där åfwan oppå fölgdt, att H:s Kongl. Maij:tt medh Engelsche Republiquen hafwer träffat en alliance öfwer säkerheeten i navigationen och commerciernes frije lopp, så att H:s Kongl. Maij:tz trogne undersåthere intedh ringa fördel och förkåfring där uthaf hafwe till förmoda.
Widh detta sakernes tillståndh och postur hafwer H:s Kongl. M:tt för rådsampt hållit, att tänkia på den dessein, som H:s Kongl. Maij:tt för någre åhr sedan allaredo fattat hafwer, och then widh denne tijden ställa uthi sin execution, nembligen till att oppdraga H:s Kongl. Hög:t den Durchleuchtige Högborne Furste Hertig Carll Gustaff medh Gudz nåde Sweriges Rijkes uthkoradhe Printz och Arffurste, Pfaltzgrefwe widh Rein i Beijern, till Gülich, Clewe och Bergen Hertig, Sweriges Rijkes Chrono, Scepter och regering, hwilkedh för denne tijdh att proponera och föredraga. Hennes Kongl. Maij:tt drager ock det nådige förtroende till Rixens Ständer sampteligen, att när the besinna och efftertänkia medh hwadh trogen omwårdnad, flijt och dexteritet och medh mycken mödo och arbethe H:s Kongl. Maij:tt nu på tije åhrs tijdh hafwer förestådt Rixens regering och där wedh hafft den lyckan att H:s Kongl. Maij:tz consilier och intentioner medh en önskelig effect ähre secunderadhe och wälsignadhe, så att fäderneslandet medh ähra och reputation ähr råkat uthur swåra krig och många olägenheeter, och alt här till wedh ett önskeligit tillståndh förestådt och erhållit, så skole dee här uthaf intedh annat kunna judicera och afftaga, än att H:s Kongl. Maij:tt här igenom intedh annat än Rixens wälfärdh och säkerheet söker och åstundar.
Ständerne, som på någre förledne Rixdagar hafwe warit tillsamman, wete sigh att påminna huruledes H:s Kongl. Maij:tt hafwer låtit sigh wara angeläget och där oppå arbetat, att Rijket och Regementet medh en wiss Successore måtte blifwa försedt, the olägenheeter, som wedh en owiss regements förandring gemenligen yppas, där medh till att afskära och förekomma. Hwilkedh ock Rixens Ständer så widt hafwa låtit sigh behaga, att Hans Kongl. Hög:t till Rixens Arffurste och Successor till Chronan ähr uthkoradh och bewilliadh; hwilket alt H:s Kongl. Maij:tt ifrån begynnelssen till den orsak och ända hafwer intenderadt och drijfwit, att H:s Kongl. Maij:tt ändtligen detta uthslaget där oppå winna måtte. Och på det H:s Kongl. Maij:tt wedh sin lijffztijdh måtte hafwa den hugnan att see och spöria att samma H:s Kongl. Maij:tz dessein wärkeligen effectueras, och att Rijkedh och Regementedh widh Hans Kongl. Hög:ts regering fullkåmligen stadgas och inrättas måtte; Ty hafwer H:s Kongl. Maij:tt resolverat att cedera och afståå Rixens Chrono och Regering och all där på hörande prætension och rättigheet, och den samma H:s Kongl. Hög:t i händer oppdraga och öfwerandtwarda.
Och ändoch sådan H:s Kongl. M:tz resolution kan Rixens Ständer något fremmadt och oförmodeligen förekomma, så hafwer doch H:s Kongl. Maij:tt till Rixens Ständer det nådige förtroende, att dee sig här uthi skicka wille, och H:s Kongl. Maij:tt för den swåra regementsbördan sin roo och lijsa unna, och altså till denne förestående förandring sin gode consens och bewillning gifwa och meddela.
Hennes Kongl. Maij:tt håller sigh ock försäkradh, att såsom Rixens Ständer genom föregående acter hafwe tesmoignerat den æstime dee göra öfwer H:s Kongl. Hög:ts persson och hans bekände och högtberömmelige qualiteter, så skole dee ock befinna, att han them till deres wälståndh och förnufftige regering så emploijerandes warder, att the medh thenne förandring intedh skole blifwa förledde och præjudiceradhe, där till H:s Kongl. Maij:tt sigh tillbiuder att willia för sitt afträde alla goda consilia och medhwärkan contribuera och medhdeela; enkannerlig att H:s Kongl. Hög:t den respect, hörsamheet och lydno och allan den rätt, som en Konungh tillkommer, och the på sin sijdo skyllige ähre att præstera.
Och såsom H:s Kongl. M:tt hafwer efftertänkt och hoos sigh resolveradt, huru H:s Kongl. M:tt medh ett wist och säkert underhåldh i sin lijffztijdh måtte blifwa försörgdh, och sin där öfwer fattade disposition Hans Kongl. Hög:t Rixens Arffurste communiceradt, så förseer sigh H:s Kongl. Maij:tt nådigst till sine trogne undersåthere och Ständer, att the där medh ähre till fredz, och sådan H:s Kongl. Maij:tz förordning för godh och skälig erkänne och sig behaga låte. Hennes Kongl. Maij:tt begärer fördenskull allernådigst, att Rixens Ständer wille detta ährendet hooss sigh wäl öfwerläggia och ther oppå wara betänkte, huru thenna H:s Kongl. Maij:tz fattadhe resolution medh ähra och maner och dedh aldraförsta måtte effectueras kunna.
Hennes Kongl. Maij:tt betackar ock sine trogne undersåthere allernådigst för den hörsamheet och lydna, ähra och respect, som the alle i gemeen och hwar och en i synnerheet hafwa trooligen bewijst Hennes Kongl. Maij:tt widh heela thenne sin Regementz tijdh, så att Hennes Kongl. Maij:tt medh theres underdånige trogne comportement aldeles hafwer warit wäl till fredz och will sådant här effter widh alle förefallande occasioner medh tacksamheet ihugkomma och erkänna.
Hennes Kongl. Maij:tt förmodar ock där hooss att Hennes Maij:tz trogne undersåthere låta sig behaga och till det bästa uthtyda den trogne omwårdnad och försårg Hennes Maij:tt om dem alla samptligen och theres wälfärdh burit hafwer och den nådige affection H:s K. M:tt emoth hwar och en i synnerheet gärna hafwer tedt och bewijsat.
Hennes Kongl. Maij:tt önskar att den aldrahögste Guden wille detta wårt käre Fäderneslandh medh alle dess Inbyggiare och undersåthere ifrån all olycko beskydda, bewara och wälsigna, att Rixens Ständer samptligen och synnerligen i gått och önskeligit tillståndh mehr och mehr tillwäxa, förkåfras och florera måtte.

Hennes Kungliga Majestät påminner sig ock i lika måtto, och haver det sina trogna undersåtare nådigst till berätta, att såsom Fäderneslandet inom dess gränser sig uti ett gott och roligt tillstånd befinner, så är det ock genom Guds försyn och Hennes Kungliga Majestäts trogna omvårdnad uti dessa farliga tider, och där kriget och dess farligheter haver svävat omkring oss på alla sidor, så vida erhållit att vi have kunnat sitta i ro och säkerhet och oss uti andras trättor och olägenheter inte beblandat, till den ända Hennes Kungliga Majestät haver sig beflitat med sina nabor och grannar all god vänskap och förstånd att uppehålla och kultivera.
Ty vad naboskapet med Danmark vidkommer, så haver Hennes Kungliga Majestät på den sidan intet annat än frid och vänskap att förmoda och haver icke heller till något annat givit den ringaste orsak och anledning.
Sammaledes lever Hennes Kungliga Majestät uti gott förstånd med storfurstendömet Ryssland och haver igenom sine kommissarier låtit arbeta uppå att slätta och avhjälpa de gränsestrider och andra differentier som hava kunnat vara Hennes Kungliga Majestät och den Staten emellan. Hennes Kungliga Majestät drager ock det nådiga förtroende till Riksens Ständer samtligen att när de besinna och eftertänka med vad trogen omvårdnad, flit och dexteritet och med mycken mödo och arbete Hennes Kungliga Majestät nu på tio års tid haver förestått Riksens regering och därvid haft den lyckan att Hennes Kungliga Majestäts konsilier och intentioner med en önsklig effekt äro sekunderade och välsignade, så att Fäderneslandet med ära och reputation är råkat utur svåra krig och många olägenheter, och allt härtill vid ett önskligt tillstånd förestått och erhållit, så skola de härutav intet annat kunna judicera och avtaga än att Hennes Kungliga Majestät härigenom intet annat än Riksens välfärd och säkerhet söker och åstundar.
Ständerna, som på några förlidna Riksdagar hava varit tillsamman, veta sig att påminna huruledes Hennes Kungliga Majestät haver låtit sig vara angeläget och däruppå arbetat att Riket och regementet med en viss successore måtte bliva försett de olägenheter som vid en oviss regementsförändring gemenligen yppas, därmed till att avskära och förekomma, vilket ock Riksens Ständer så vitt hava låtit sig behaga att Hans Kungliga Höghet till Riksens arvfurste och successor till Kronan är utkorad och beviljad, vilket allt Hennes Kungliga Majestät ifrån begynnelsen till den orsak och ända haver intenderat och drivit att Hennes Kungliga Majestät äntligen detta utslaget däruppå vinna måtte.
Och på det Hennes Kungliga Majestät vid sin livstid måtte hava den hugnan att se och spörja att samma Hennes Kungliga Majestäts dessäng verkligen effektueras och att Riket och regementet vid Hans Kungliga Höghets regering fullkomligen stadgas och inrättas måtte, ty haver Hennes Kungliga Majestät resolverat att cedera och avstå Riksens Krono och regering och all därpå hörande pretension och rättighet och densamma Hans Kungliga Höghet i händer uppdraga och överantvarda.
Och ändock sådan Hennes Kungliga Majestäts resolution kan Riksens Ständer något främmad och oförmodligen förekomma, så haver doch Hennes Kungliga Majestät till Riksens Ständer det nådiga förtroende att de sig häruti skicka ville och Hennes Kungliga Majestät för den svåra regementsbördan sin ro och lisa unna och alltså till denna förestående förändring sin goda konsens och bevillning giva och meddela.
Hennes Kungliga Majestät håller sig ock försäkrad att såsom Riksens Ständer genom föregående akter hava temoignerat den estim de göra över Hans Kungliga Höghets person och hans bekända och högtberömliga kvaliteter, så skola de ock befinna att han dem till deras välstånd och förnuftiga regering så emplojerandes varder att de med denna förändring inte skola bliva förledde och prejudicerade, därtill Hennes Kungliga Majestät sig tillbjuder att vilja för sitt avträde alla goda consilia och medverkan kontribuera och meddela, enkannerlig[en] att Hans Kungliga Höghet, förr sitt tillträde till Kronan, försäkrar Riksens Ständer och det presterar som Sveriges konungar efter lag och sedvänjo äro skyldiga och i slika fall är brukligt. Däremot ock Riksens Ständer skola vara förtänkte att bevisa Hans Kungliga Höghet den respekt, hörsamhet och lydno och allan den rätt som en konung tillkommer och de på sin sido skyldiga äro att prestera.
Och såsom Hennes Kungliga Majestät haver eftertänkt och hos sig resolverat huru Hennes Kungliga Majestät med ett visst och säkert underhåll i sin livstid måtte bliva försörjd och sin däröver fattade disposition Hans Kungliga Höghet Riksens arvfurste kommunicerat, så förser sig Hennes Kungliga Majestät nådigst till sina trogna undersåtare och Ständer att de därmed äro tillfreds och sådan Hennes Kungliga Majestäts förordning för god och skälig erkänne och sig behaga låte. Hennes Kungliga Majestät begär fördenskull allernådigst att Riksens Ständer ville detta ärendet hos sig väl överlägga och däruppå vara betänkte huru denna Hennes Kungliga Majestäts fattade resolution med ära och maner och det allraförsta måtte effektueras kunna.
Hennes Kungliga Majestät betackar ock sina trogna undersåtare allernådigst för den hörsamhet och lydna, ära och respekt som de alla i gemen och var och en i synnerhet hava troligen bevist Hennes Kungliga Majestät vid hela denna sin regementstid, så att Hennes Kungliga Majestät med deras underdåniga trogna komportement alldeles haver varit väl tillfreds och vill sådant härefter vid alla förefallande ockasioner med tacksamhet ihågkomma och erkänna.
Hennes Kungliga Majestät förmodar ock därhos att Hennes Majestäts trogna undersåtare låta sig behaga och till det bästa uttyda den trogna omvårdnad och försorg Hennes Majestät om dem alla samtligen och deras välfärd burit haver och den nådiga affektion Hennes Kungliga Majestät emot var och en i synnerhet gärna haver tett och bevisat.

De plus, nous avons des raisons non seulement de rendre au bon Dieu une action de grâce soumise, mais encore plus de prier pour qu'il veuille gracieusement alléger et éviter sa discipline et son châtiment paternels par la suite.
En même temps, Sa Majesté Royale apprend avec joie que les temps difficiles et coûteux et les années infructueuses passées se transforment en abondance et en bonnes récoltes annuelles, de sorte que non seulement les années passées ont été pleines de la bénédiction et de la fécondité de Dieu sur toutes les récoltes de la terre, mais aussi maintenant, grâce à Dieu, nous pouvons imaginer sous nos yeux une année douce et féconde. En outre, la grande bonté et le souci de Dieu pour nous et pour notre chère Patrie doivent être ressentis, reconnus et reconnus par une humble et sincère action de grâce.

De même, Sa Majesté Royale vit en bons termes avec le grand-duché de Russie et a, par l'intermédiaire de ses commissaires, travaillé pour aplanir et remédier aux conflits frontaliers et autres différends qui auraient pu exister entre Sa Majesté Royale et cet État. Et bien que ledit grand-duc ait affirmé avoir mené une expédition de guerre contre la Couronne de Pologne et qu'il ait récemment, par l'intermédiaire de ses émissaires, justifié ses raisons auprès de Sa Majesté Royale, il s'agit néanmoins d'une affaire qui ne concerne pas Sa Majesté Royale et la Couronne, et il n'y a rien d'autre à craindre que leurs actions prévues soient, dans tous les cas et événements, tenus en préparation et vigilance.
Avec le roi et la Couronne de Pologne, la trêve de vingt-six ans se poursuit sans changement; et bien que Sa Majesté Royale aurait volontiers veillé à ce qu'elle puisse se transformer en une paix éternelle, et même grâce à la diligence des médiateurs et à ses propres commissaires autorisés à effectuer deux voyages à Lübeck, tout n'aurait toujours pas pu se réaliser. Cependant, Sa Majesté Royale a tellement appris que les Polonais ne seraient pas réticents à reprendre et à reprendre le même traité de paix à un autre moment, de sorte que Sa Majesté Royale ne désespère pas complètement de son succès final.

Dans une égale mesure, Sa Majesté Royale siège en bonne confiance avec la France et l'Espagne, et n'oublie pas ce qui peut être réquisitionné pour obtenir dans ces lieux une bonne amitié et une bonne alliance. Cependant, Sa Majesté Royale se réjouit particulièrement de ce que la guerre dangereuse dans la mer occidentale entre les puissantes républiques d'Angleterre et les Pays-Bas unis, dont on craignait de grands inconvénients pour notre commerce, semble maintenant enfin terminée et mise de côté, et le résultat de ce qui précède a été que Sa Majesté royale et la République anglaise ont conclu une alliance pour la sécurité de la navigation et le libre cours du commerce, de sorte que les fidèles sujets de Sa Majesté royale ne puissent en attendre aucun petit avantage ni prospérer.
Dans cet état et cette posture des choses, Sa Majesté Royale a cru opportun de songer au dessein que Sa Majesté Royale avait déjà pris il y a quelques années et de le mettre à exécution à cette époque, à savoir d'ordonner à Son Altesse Royale le sérénissime, bien-né prince, le duc Charles Gustave, par la grâce de Dieu, élu prince et prince héréditaire du royaume de Suède, comte palatin du Rhin en Bavière, duc de Juliers, Clèves et Bergen, et à cette époque de le proposer à la Couronne, le sceptre et le gouvernement du Royaume de Suède.
Sa Majesté Royale donne aussi la gracieuse confiance aux États du Royaume dans leur ensemble que lorsqu'ils reprennent leurs esprits et réfléchissent avec quel soin fidèle, diligence et dextérité et avec beaucoup de labeur et de travail, Sa Majesté Royale gère depuis maintenant dix ans le gouvernement du Royaume et a ainsi eu la chance que les conseils et les intentions de Sa Majesté Royale soient secondés et bénis avec un effet désirable, de sorte que la Patrie, avec honneur et réputation, est sortie de guerres difficiles et de nombreux inconvénients, et a gouverné et obtenu tout cela dans un état souhaitable, ils ne pourront donc pas en juger ni en retirer autre chose que le fait que Sa Majesté Royale ne cherche et ne désire par la présente que le bien-être et la sécurité du Royaume.
Les États, qui ont été ensemble lors de quelques Diètes précédentes, savent rappeler comment Sa Majesté Royale s'est laissée s'en occuper et a ensuite travaillé à ce que le Royaume et le régiment soient dotés d'un successeur certain, afin de couper et prévenir les inconvénients qui sont communément causés par un changement de régiment incertain, avec lesquels les États du Royaume se sont aussi permis de se réjouir que Son Altesse Royale soit élue et accordée comme prince héréditaire du royaume et successeur de la Couronne, tout ce que Sa Majesté Royale, depuis le début, a voulu et conduit jusqu'au bout pour que Sa Majesté Royale remporte finalement ce verdict.
Et pour que Sa Majesté Royale, de son vivant, ait la joie de voir et de sentir que son même dessein s'accomplit réellement et que le Royaume et le régiment soient pleinement établis et installés sous le gouvernement de Son Altesse Royale, Sa Majesté Royale a donc résolu de céder et d'abandonner le royaume, la Couronne et le gouvernement ainsi que toutes les prétentions et droits y afférents et de les remettre entre les mains de Son Altesse Royale.
Et bien qu'une telle résolution de Sa Majesté Royale puisse paraître quelque peu étrange et improbable aux États, Sa Majesté Royale a la gracieuse confiance dans les États du Royaume qu'ils veulent s'y envoyer et accorder à Sa Majesté Royale la paix et la consolation du lourd fardeau du régiment et qu'ils donneront et annonceront donc leur bon consentement et leur permission à ce changement imminent.
Sa Majesté Royale est également assurée que, de même que les États du Royaume ont, par des actes antérieurs, témoigné l'estime qu'ils accordent à la personne de Son Altesse Royale et à ses qualités renommées et hautement louables, ils constateront aussi qu'il les emploiera pour leur prospérité et un gouvernement sensé afin qu'ils ne soient pas induits en erreur et lésés par ce changement, auquel Sa Majesté Royale offre de vouloir contribuer et annonce pour sa démission tous bons conseils et coopération, en particulier que Son Altesse Royale, avant son accession à la Couronne, assure les États du Royaume et les exécute comme les rois de Suède y sont obligés par la loi et la coutume et comme il est d'usage dans de tels cas. En échange, les États du Royaume seront aussi prédisposés à prouver à Son Altesse Royale le respect, l'obéissance et tous les droits auxquels un roi a droit et qu'eux, de leur côté, sont tenus d'exercer.
Et comme Sa Majesté Royale a réfléchi et résolu en elle-même comment elle pourrait bénéficier d'un entretien certain et sûr au cours de sa vie et a communiqué sa disposition à ce sujet à Son Altesse Royale le prince héréditaire du Royaume, de même Sa Majesté Royale fournit très gracieusement pour ses fidèles sujets et domaines afin qu'ils en soient satisfaits et qu'ils se laissent plaisir à reconnaître le décret de Sa Majesté Royale comme bon et raisonnable. Sa Majesté Royale demande donc très gracieusement aux États du Royaume de bien réfléchir à cette question avec eux-mêmes et, en plus de cela, de réfléchir à la manière dont cette résolution de Sa Majesté Royale peut être mise en œuvre avec honneur et manières et dans la toute première mesure.

The proposition of her majesty of Sweden to the estates assembled att Ubsale, the 11th of May, in the year 1654.
Since, for certain reasons, her majesty found it good and necessary to assemble the estates of the kingdome att this time, and that they have given testimony of their obedience in their comming togither; her majesty hath great cause to rejoyce, that the good God hath preserved our countrey from all apparent harmes, and principally from the contagious sicknes of the plague, which spread itselfe in divers places the last Autumne, butt att present is ceased, so that we may meet togither in all safety. Her majesty rejoyceth in the good health of her faithful subjects; and this obligeth us, not only to returne humble thankes to our good God, butt the more to supplicate him, for the future, to avert his fatherly chastisements from us.
Also her majesty understands, with great joy, that the scarsity, and dearth in the late years, is now changed into fruitfullnes and abundance, so that, the last year, there was not only very great abundance of all things which the earth produceth, butt further (thankes be to God) we have cause, according to appearances, to hope this yeare will be no lesse fruitfull; the which great blessing of God to this countrey cleerly showes us the great obligations, which we have to him.

In like manner, with all possible care, by her commissioners, hath composed the differences touching the limits between her and the Great Duke of Muscovy; and although the said duke hath signifyed to her majesty, by divers envoyes, that he would justify the expedition of warre, newly made by him, against the Polanders, with all the reasons therof; yett since that is a buisnes which can no way involve her majesty, and the crown of Sweden, there is no cause to feare it; provided that their actions be watched, and that, by little and little, preparation be made, if there shall be cause to apply some remedyes.
With the king and crown of Poland is continued the amnestie for twenty-six years, formerly accorded; and although her majesty wisheth that this amnestie had bin converted into a perpetuall peace, and, for this end, she hath caused paines to be taken twice att Lubec, by the mediators and her commissioners, and although they are not yett agreed, nevertheless her majesty understands so much on the part of Poland, that they are not disaffected to the renewing of the treatyes for a longer time, so that her majesty hath no cause butt to promise herselfe, att length, a favourable successe therin.
With the Emperor and Roman empire, her majesty, since the peace executed in Germany, hath continued and maintayned good amity and correspondence; and, for this end, she hath her ambassadors there, who have their places in the present diette, for the principality of Bremen, Verden, and Pomerland, among the other members of the empire, who doe there maintaine and observe the interests of her majesty; and, for the conclusion of the peace of Germany, her majesty hath resolved, by a great ambassy, to accept the possession and investiture from the emperor of the conquered countryes.
Also, her majesty hath a good correspondence and friendship with France and Spayne, by fitt meanes, and a good allyance.

And to the end, that her majesty, during her life, may have the pleasure to see the happy effect of this design, and that the entire governement may be rendred into the hands of his royall highnes; therfore, her majesty hath resolved to quitt the crowne, and the privileges of it, and to putt them into the hands of his royall highnes.
And although this resolution of her majesty may seem strange and unexpected to the estates of the kingdome, nevertheles, according to her gratious confidence, she believes, that they will consent to her quiet, in retiring herselfe from so heavy a burden, by their contributing an assent to the proposed alteration.

Whereas Her Royal Majesty has, for particular reasons, found it good and advisable to call the Estates of the Realm together for this time and they have obediently installed themselves for it, so Her Royal Majesty also has reason to rejoice that the Most High God has so graciously preserved our dear Fatherland from all looming dangers, particularly from the contagious disease of pestilence which had spread and flared up in some places last autumn up and has now mostly ceased, so that people can now safely come together and Her Royal Majesty finds and sees her faithful subjects in health and good condition. In addition, we have cause to not only give the good God a submissive thanksgiving, but even more to pray that He want to graciously alleviate and avert His fatherly discipline and punishment hereafter.
At the same time, Her Royal Majesty gladly learns that the difficult and dear times and past unfruitful years are transformed into abundance and good yearly crops, so that not only have the past years have been full of God's blessing and fruitfulness on all the crops of the earth, but also now, thanks be to God, we can suppose before our eyes a sweet and fruitful year. Furthermore, God's great goodness and care for us and our dear Fatherland is to be felt and acknowledged and recognised with a heartfelt, humble thanksgiving.
Her Royal Majesty also reminds herself in equal measure, and graciously has to tell her faithful subjects, that as the Fatherland is in a good and happy state within its borders, so it is also through God's providence and Her Royal Majesty's faithful care in these dangerous times, and where war and its dangers have hovered around us on all sides, so far obtained that we have been able to sit in peace and safety and not involve ourselves in other people's troubles and inconveniences, to the end that Her Royal Majesty has been diligent in maintaining and cultivating all good amity and understanding with her neighbours.
For as far as the neighbourhood with Denmark is concerned, Her Royal Majesty has nothing but peace and friendship to presume on that side, and she has not given the slightest cause and reason for anything else.
Likewise, Her Royal Majesty lives on good terms with the Grand Duchy of Russia and has, through her commissioners, worked to smooth out and remedy the border disputes and other differences that could have existed between Her Royal Majesty and that state. And although the said Grand Duke has claimed to have had a war expedition against the Crown of Poland and has, through his emissaries, recently justified against his reasons for it to Her Royal Majesty, it is nevertheless a matter which does not concern Her Royal Majesty and the Crown, and it is no further to be feared than that their intended actions be in all cases and events kept in readiness and vigilance.
With the King and Crown of Poland, the twenty-six year standstill is continued without change; and although Her Royal Majesty would gladly have seen that it could have been transformed into an eternal peace, and even through the diligence of mediators and her own commissioners allowed to work two journeys to Lübeck, it still could not have all come together. However, Her Royal Majesty has so much learned that on the Polish side they would not be disinclined to take up and resume the same peace treaty at another time, so that Her Royal Majesty does not completely despair of its final success.
With the Emperor and the Roman Empire, Her Royal Majesty, ever since the peace was concluded and executed in Germany, has maintained good friendship and correspondence, and she keeps there her ambassadors who, in the Reichstag at Regensburg on behalf of the principalities of Bremen-Verden and Pomerania, have their seats among the other Estates of the Realm and who take Her Royal Majesty's service and interest into account. And Her Royal Majesty has, for the final completion of the German peace, had it in her hands, through a considerable delegation, to take investiture from the Emperor on the newly acquired lands in Germany.
In equal measure, Her Royal Majesty sits in good confidence with France and Spain, and does not omit what may be requisitioned for obtaining good friendship and alliance in those places. However, Her Royal Majesty especially rejoices that the dangerous war in the Western Sea between the powerful republics of England and the United Netherlands, from which no small inconvenience to our commerce has been feared, now at last seems to be ended and set aside, and the result of the above has been that Her Royal Majesty and the English Commonwealth have entered into an alliance over the security of navigation and the free course of commerce, so that Her Royal Majesty's faithful subjects may not expect any small advantage or flourishing therefrom.
In this state and posture of things, Her Royal Majesty has thought it advisable to think of the design which Her Royal Majesty had already taken a few years ago and to put it into execution at this time, namely to order His Royal Highness the serene, high-born Prince, Duke Karl Gustav, by the grace of God, elected Prince and Hereditary Prince of the Kingdom of Sweden, Count Palatine on the Rhine in Bavaria, Duke of Gülich, Cleves and Bergen, and at this time to propose him to the Crown, scepter and government of the Kingdom of Sweden.
Her Royal Majesty also gives the gracious confidence to the Estates of the Realm as a whole that when they come to their senses and think with what faithful care, diligence and dexterity and with much toil and work Her Royal Majesty has now for ten years managed the government of the Realm and thereby had the good fortune that Her Royal Majesty's counsels and intentions are seconded and blessed with a desirable effect, so that the Fatherland, with honour and reputation, has come out of difficult wars and many inconveniences, and has ruled and obtained all this in a desirable state, so they will not be able to judge and take away anything else from this but that Her Royal Majesty hereby seeks and desires nothing but the welfare and safety of the Realm.
The Estates, which have been together on a few previous Riksdags, know how to recall how Her Royal Majesty has allowed herself be concerned with it and then worked on that the Kingdom and the regiment should be provided with with a certain successor, so as to cut off and prevent the inconveniences that are commonly caused by an uncertain change of regiment, with which the Estates of the Realm have also allowed themselves to be pleased that His Royal Highness is elected and granted as the Hereditary Prince of the Realm and successor to the Crown, all of which Her Royal Majesty, since the beginning, has intended and driven to the end that Her Royal Majesty finally wins this verdict thereupon.
And so that Her Royal Majesty, during her lifetime, may have the joy of seeing and feeling that her same design is truly effected and that the Kingdom and the regiment are fully established and installed during His Royal Highness's government, Her Royal Majesty has therefore resolved to cede and relinquish the Kingdom, Crown and government and all related pretensions and rights and to place the same into the hands of His Royal Highness.
And although such a resolution from Her Royal Majesty may appear somewhat strange and improbable to the Estates, Her Royal Majesty has the gracious confidence in the Estates of the Realm that they want to send themselves herein and grant Her Royal Majesty peace and consolation from the heavy burden of the regiment and that they will therefore give and announce their good consent and permission to this impending change.
Her Royal Majesty is also assured that as the Estates of the Realm have, through previous acts, testified the esteem they place in His Royal Highness's person and his renowned and highly commendable qualities, so they will also find that he will employ them for their prosperity and sensible government so that they will not be misled and prejudiced by this change, to which Her Royal Majesty offers to want to contribute and announce for her resignation all good counsel and cooperation, particularly that His Royal Highness, before his accession to the Crown, assures the Estates of the Realm and carries it out as the kings of Sweden are obliged by law and custom and as is customary in such cases. In return, the Estates of the Realm will also be predisposed to prove to His Royal Highness the respect, obedience and all the rights that a King is entitled to, and which they, on their side, are obliged to perform.
And as Her Royal Majesty has considered and resolved within herself how she may be provided with a certain and secure maintenance during her lifetime and has communicated her disposition regarding this to His Royal Highness the Hereditary Prince of the Realm, so Her Royal Majesty most graciously provides for her faithful subjects and Estates so that they are thereby satisfied and that they let themselves be pleased to acknowledge Her Royal Majesty's decree as good and reasonable. Her Royal Majesty therefore most graciously requests that the Estates of the Realm want to consider this matter well with themselves and, on top of that, consider how this Her Royal Majesty's resolution can be implemented with honour and manners and in the very first measure.
Her Royal Majesty also most graciously thanks her faithful subjects for the obedience, honour and respect which they all in common and each one in particular have faithfully shown Her Royal Majesty during this her entire reign, so that Her Royal Majesty has been well satisfied with their submissive, faithful comportment and wants to hereafter remember and acknowledge such things with gratitude on all appearing occasions.
Her Royal Majesty also presumes therein that her faithful subjects will be pleased to perceive in the best way the faithful care and concern Her Majesty has for them all and their welfare, and the gracious affection Her Royal Majesty has gladly shown and proven towards each one in particular.
Her Royal Majesty wishes that the Most High God want to protect, preserve and bless this our dear Fatherland with all its inhabitants and subjects from all misfortune and that the Estates of the Kingdom as a whole and in particular may in a good and desirable condition will grow more and more and flourish.
