Avec cette supplication très humble, dans la plus profonde soumission, je présente à Votre Majesté Royale que moi, une femme pauvre et prisonnière très affligée, je suis devenue veuve dans l'inceste et la fornication avec le mari de ma sœur, et que (Dieu, comme c'est regrettable!) par son art diabolique, Dieu sera mon témoin s'il est brûlé par moi qui a été provoquée par le mal; car j'ai été libérée par et avec un noble honnête, mais cet homme méchant, par l'intermédiaire de l'introduction du diable vers moi, m'a attiré vers le grand péché, a enfoncé mes trois portes et les a prises de force, pour lequel péché grossier et grand j'ai passé des années dans les fers et été gardée en prison depuis Saint-Michel l'année dernière dans plusieurs endroits, et maintenant enfin, de la Haute Cour Royale, une résolution finale a été obtenue que je serai justifiée. With this my most humble supplication, in deepest submission, I present to Your Royal Majesty that I, a poor and most afflicted woman and prisoner, have come into my widowhood in incest and fornication with my sister's husband, and that (God, how regrettably!) by its devilish art, God shall be my witness if it is burned by me that has been provoked by evil; for I was freed by and with an honest nobleman, but that wicked man, through the devil's introduction to me, lured me to the great sin, broke open my three doors and took them by force, for the which gross and great sin I have spent years in fetters and been kept in prison since the time of Michaelmas last year in several places, and now at last, from the High Royal Court, a final resolution has been obtained that I shall be justified. I therefore most humbly beg Your Royal Majesty that it will please Your Royal Majesty to most graciously find it worthy to pardon my life, for the sake of God and that of my poor little children, and to request to your highly-honoured lord Son, my most gracious King and Lord, that it please His Royal Majesty to most graciously pardon my life. Elles portoient entre autres choses, qu'aucun exercice d'une Religion étrangére ne lui seroit permis, ni à ses Domestiques: ce qui lui parut insupportable, & lui fit dire qu'elle retourneroit aussitôt sur ses pas. Les Députés de la Régence suppliérent la Reine de suspendre sa résolution, au moins pour attendre le retour du Courier qu'ils alloient dépêcher au Sénat, pour apprendre sa derniére décision. A quoi la Reine consentit à la fin, en poussant chemin jusqu'à Jonköping. Ce fut de-là qu'elle écrivit la Lettre suivante au Comte Brahe Grand-Drost de Suède, en faveur d'une Femme, Elsa Swenske, pour lui sauver la vie (Il n'y est pas dit en quoi consistoit son crime, & il ne paroît pas qu'elle ait été complice d'Anne Gyldener, dont nous avons rapporté l'avanture dans ces Mémoires T. II. p. 32 & 33.)."

"Although the regency of Sweden had wished that the Queen would not set foot in the kingdom, nevertheless, as it had just learned from the above letter that Kristina was firmly proposed to go there, they could not dispense of preparing an honourable reception for her, but under such harsh and restrictive conditions regarding the exercise of her religion that it was to be presumed that the Queen would not accept them. We have reported them in full elsewhere (Mémoires de Christine, vol. II, pp. 107-116.) without needing to detail them again here. In a word, Kristina found them such that she could not conform to them in any way. Among other things, they stipulated that no practice of a foreign religion would be permitted to her or her domestics, which she found unbearable and which led her to say that she would immediately turn back. The deputies of the regency begged the Queen to suspend her resolution, at least until the return of the courier they were about to dispatch to the Senate to learn its final decision. To this the Queen finally consented, continuing her journey to Jönköping. It was from there that she wrote the following letter to Count Brahe, Grand Steward of Sweden, on behalf of a woman, Elsa Swenske, to save her life (It is not stated what her crime consisted of, and it does not appear that she was an accomplice of Anna Gyllander, whose story we have recounted in these Memoirs, vol. II, pp. 32 and 33.)"

Note: Elsa Swenske's crime is specified in a signed letter of supplication to Kristina, dated March 28/April 7 (Old Style), 1667, kept in the Biographica (Riksarkivets ämnessamlingar) collection at the Swedish National Archives (Riksarkivet): she had had "incest and fornication" with her sister's husband.

In accordance with the nobility's ideals in the early modern era, kings and queens considered themselves siblings; when talking to someone of a lower rank than their own, they would refer to that person as "my cousin", regardless of whether or not they were related.
