Monsignor Isidoro Carini on Kristina and the Accademia dell'Arcadia, year 1891 (New Style dates used)

Source:

L'Arcadia dal 1690 al 1890: Memorie storiche Isidoro Carini, volume 1, pages 9 to 13, by Monsignor Isidoro Carini, 1891; original at the Sapienza University of Rome (Biblioteca di Filosofia)

The account:

RADUNANZA I.a
Cav. D. Paolo Coardi da Torino.
Giuseppe Paolucci da Spello.
Vincenzo Leonio da Spoleto.
Silvio Stampiglio da Civita Lavinia.
Giov. Mario Crescimbeni da Macerata.
Vincenzo Gravina Napolitano.
Giov. Batt. Zappi Imolese.
Ab. Carlo di Tuornon da Torino.
Ab. Pompeo Figari genovese.
Paolo Antonio del Negro genovese.
Cav. Melchiorre Maggio fiorentino.
Giacomo Vicinelli romano.
Paolo Antonio Viti da Orvieto.
Agostino Maria Taja Sanese.

Bosco a me caro, che sì spesso suona

Ogni tronco; e qui nacque, e qui risuona

«Sì sì; vivrà finchè avrann' acqua i tersi

English translation (my own):

The literati ... were led in Rome by the famous Kristina Alexandra of Sweden, the last of the Vasas, the daughter of that Gustav Adolf who played a leading role in the Thirty Years' War. Born in 1626, she succeeded her father, who had been fatally wounded by a bullet at Lützen, at the age of six, in 1632. On June 16, 1654, she abdicated in favour of her cousin Karl Gustav, Count Palatine; and, having renounced the Lutheran heresy in Brussels, she went to the Eternal City the following year.

["Moved by a beautiful desire to pay tribute
Of faith to Christ, and of servitude to Peter,
A royal pilgrim, with flowing hair
Came to fill Italy and Rome with herself".]

Thus says a contemporary poet. I will not speak here of the extraordinary welcome she received from Pope Alexander VII; however, the Porta Flaminia, or del Popolo, restored for her by Bernini, with the inscription "FELICI FAVSTOQVE INGRESSV MDCLV" reminds one of it. Nor will I recall the address she gave in the Consistory, in which she begged the Holy Father to deign to receive in his metropolis a pilgrim who had come from so far away, and who had stripped herself of glory and fortune in the interest of justice and truth. The Queen (as the Romans always called her) established her abode in the city of the Popes. Of a virile spirit, of many languages, versed in study (hence the hackneyed nickname Pallas of Sweden), she cultivated letters and protected the literati. Filicaia's song in her honour is well known, and Muratori praises it so highly in Book IV of Perfetta Poesia.

Thus, the literati mourned her passing on April 19, 1689, during the reign of Innocent XI, a year and a few months before Arcadia was founded. Upon her death, she named Cardinal Azzolino her sole heir; but, as he did not survive her by more than two months, the precious inheritance, and therefore the considerable library gathered by Kristina, passed to Pompeo Azzolino, the Cardinal's nephew. Pope Alexander VIII, who succeeded Innocent XI, purchased the Queen's collection, as well as her special manuscripts, and had this stupendous acquisition transported to the Vatican, except for a portion that he gave to his nephew, Cardinal Ottoboni.

Thus the Apostolic Library was able to add to the Vatican, Palatine and Urbinate collections another magnificent collection of ancient codices, which now forms a significant part of its many riches.

On January 24, 1656, a first academy had begun in Rome in Kristina's halls; however, its primary purpose had been the study of the moral sciences. In any case, it was the same people who, after her death, gathered for the first time in the garden of the Reformed Fathers of San Pietro in Montorio on October 5, 1690, while the aforementioned Alexander VIII was governing the Church, to perpetuate her memory, not to lose the benefit of those learned and brilliant gatherings, and, this time, to restore Tuscan poetry to honour, opposing the simplicity and sobriety of form.

Their first act, with kindly thought, was to acclaim Kristina as the patroness of their class, under the Greek name of Basilisa, and thus they were content to substitute the bare title of royal dignity for the distorted and pompous praises that were typical of those very verbose times. But here, to show the men of whom this new society of purist literati was composed, I think it appropriate to transcribe what is stated from the very beginning of the first volume of the Catalogo dei Pastori Arcadi per ordine d'annoverazione:

"ARCADIA. — Conversation of fine letters, instituted in Rome on the fifth of October in the year 1690.

"BASILISA. — Kristina Alexandra, Queen of Sweden, of glorious memory, in whose garden, Arcadianly called the Bosco Parrasio, the Arcadian Shepherds gather.

GATHERING I.
Cavaliere Don Paolo Coardi, from Turin.
Giuseppe Paolucci, from Spello.
Vincenzo Leonio, from Spoleto.
Silvio Stampiglio, from Civita Lavinia.
Giovanni Mario Crescimbeni, from Macerata.
Vincenzo Gravina, from Naples.
Giovanni Battista Zappi, from Imola.
Abbot Carlo di Tuornon, from Turin.
Abbot Pompeo Figari, from Genoa.
Paolo Antonio del Negro, from Genoa.
Cavaliere Melchiorre Maggio, from Florence.
Giacomo Vicinelli, from Rome.
Paolo Antonio Viti, from Orvieto.
Agostino Maria Taja, from Siena.

As can be seen, Kristina's name is written at the head of the Arcadian fasti. And in this regard, I will transcribe the last of the five sonnets, which Vincenzo Filicaia recited at the Academy, in which he makes her speak thus:

Bosco a me caro, che sì spesso suona

Ogni tronco; e qui nacque, e qui risuona

"Sì sì; vivrà finchè avrann' acqua i tersi

["But more than anywhere else, here on the Tiber I reign,
And in this, like Pindus and Helicon,
A forest dear to me, which so often resounds
Of my praises, I come no longer to dwell.

"But here not only voice, but voice and wit
Does every trunk have; and here was born, and here resounds
This famous one of Pastor Corona
Who hopes from me for life and support.

"Yes, yes; it will live for as long as the clear
Rivers have water, and not only will it live, but Heaven destines,
That prose and verse will still live for it.

"Here she was silent; and the approaching dawn
Already made the East whiten: I opened my eyes
And no more did I see the immortal Kristina".] ...

Kristina's letter to Vincenzo Filicaia (APOCRYPHAL)

Source:

Lettres secrètes de Christine, Reine de Suède, pages 107 to 109, published by François Lacombe, 1761; original at the National Library of the Netherlands (Het Koninklijke Bibliotheek)
The letter:

MAGNIFIQUE SENATEUR,

«
Horatius, bok 1, satir 4, vers 42.

English translation (my own):

Magnificent councilman,
You who sing so well of heroes and gods, why is your learned muse mute? Why does she sleep in the most beautiful and favorable days for great writers? The universe resounds at every moment with the glorious and surprising victories of Condé and Turenne, and you stagnate in silence. Are you not afraid that this indolent rest will wither the laurels you have reaped up to now with so much glory?

Awaken from this lethargic slumber and unleash your mighty genius; immortalise yourself by celebrating these generous warriors. The poet will be as admired as the children of Bellona and Mars.

Antiquity boasts in vain of Alexander and Caesar; the brilliant age of Louis was to be forever the ornament of the world. He had to produce men even more rare in their virtues and their noble worth. Heaven has caused these auspicious deities to be born among us, for the splendour of Louis, and to leave to our last nephews perfect models of wisdom, science and bravery. Qualities so rare among great captains that one must be surprised today to see them all united in these two illustrious rivals.

I am your admirer and your friend; but you would grievously offend me to languish any longer in such shameful idleness, which is fatal to your glory and which degrades you in the eyes of the wise.

The not glorious poet is due only to one who has a lofty spirit, a divine genius, and who only celebrates great things.

"
Horace, book 1, satire 4, verse 42.

If you do not quickly revive your slumbering spirit to make it sing of this brilliant century, so fruitful in wonders which will forever fix the admiration and gaze of posterity, I immediately forget the beautiful verses you have written in my praise, and my hatred for you will be eternal.

We will soon see how much you care for my prayers and whether, to make you speak, it will be necessary to employ the means Charles V used to silence Arretino, the formidable scourge of princes and bad poets.

French translation (my own):

Seigneur Vincenzo Filicaia,

Swedish translation (my own):

Signor Vincenzo Filicaia,

Signor Vincenzo Filicaia,
By enlisting you in my Academy, I have claimed to pay part of what is due to your merit and to increase lustre to it; but I have not pretended to satisfy what I am bound to do with you, I nevertheless profess to be your debtor, and I assure you well that you have occasion to be pleased to be associated with the number of those great men who constitute my Academy, among whom there is no one who does not do you the honour you deserve. I thank you for the new expressions you have made to me at this conjuncture, and I ratify my desire to help you in all your occurrences. In the meantime may God keep you and bless you, etc.

The letter:

Signor Vincenzio Filicaia. Come fate a scrivere, e comporre così maravigliosamente?

French translation (by Arckenholtz):

Monsieur Vincenzo Filicaia. Rome 21 Octobre 1684.
CHRISTINE ALEXANDRA.

Swedish translation (by Stolpe):

Signor Vincenzio Filicaia.

English translation (my own):

Sir Vincenzo Filicaia,
Your last sonnet, which you wrote for me, is so wonderful that I do not know what to tell you. You have made me lose my words! I would like to testify to you how much I like it, but I cannot find terms to express it to you. Tell me how to convince you that, in my opinion, you have outdone yourself after you have outdone everyone else. How do you manage to write and compose so wonderfully? Don't be surprised that I called someone to help me tell you what I think. I am sending you for this a copy of a note, which the great Cardinal and the greatest man in the world, that is to say, Cardinal Azzolino, wrote to me on this subject, doing you justice, to your great glory; but without putting faith in what he says about me, since in this he is too partial, only take pride in the justice he renders you, which, although due, is very glorious to you. As for me, I will try to make myself more worthy of your glorious labours, and more like the lofty ideal you have formed of me. Help me to give thanks to God that I am the most favoured of all mortals, but being at the same time the most ungrateful creature that has come out of His Omnipotent Hand. Judge by that how little I deserve the glory to which you want to lift me up by your poem. God bless you. Rome, October 21, 1684.

"Especially during her last decade in Rome, Queen Kristina played a very prominent role in the cultural life of the city. She had her own theater troupes and her own orchestra, she had her own literary academy, she favoured great artists like Bernini. Posterity finds it difficult to understand her admiration for poets like Filicaia, Lemene and Guidi. This letter gives an idea of her extraordinary esteem for this group of poets and of the respectful and friendly tone she adopted in her correspondence with prominent artists." - Stolpe

Signor Vincenzio Filicaia. Dio vi prosperi, e Conservi, come io desidero.

French translation (by Arckenholtz):

Monsieur Vincent Filicaia.

English translation (my own):

Signor Vincenzo Filicaia,
Your sonnets equal in my opinion all the beautiful things I have ever seen in lyric poetry, both modern and ancient. They are so beautiful, and you know how to praise those who deserve it. If fine deeds could expect rewards from anyone other than God, and from oneself, there would certainly be few of these rewards more worthy than that of your pen, which can only give sublime and true praise. Even Alexander the Great, if he had lived today, would envy you and, with good reason, the princes of our century more than he envied Homer and Achilles in his. These princes owe you a great obligation not to have known how to praise them worthily. I have read and reread more than once all your sonnets with the greatest pleasure, and I confess, despite the natural malignancy, which makes me ill-intentioned, to have found nothing in your poems that didn't deserve applause. I cannot express to you how much they charmed me. The incomparable Petrarch seems to me resuscitated in your person, but resuscitated in a glorious body without any faults. You have art, genius, judgement and knowledge, and you master the sacred and the profane. Your style is very beautiful and very pure, your figures are noble and sublime. I would never finish if I wanted to detail all my feelings on this to you. God grant that the arms of the Christian princes prosper more and more and make you become as great a prophet as you are an incomparable poet. It is to you alone that our century is indebted for being able to boast of the glory of having a heroic poem equal to that of the great Tasso. In addition, I thank you both for myself and on behalf of the public for having had these productions printed with your pen, and for sending them to me accompanied by expressions of your affectionate and cordial feelings towards me. You made me know thereby that you know how to write like a great man, both in verse and in prose, either in Latin or in the vulgar tongue. I want you to be persuaded that I have accepted all of this and that I do justice to your merit. May God keep you and bless you as I desire. Rome, August 12, 1684.

Monsieur Vincent Filicaia.

English translation (my own):

Signor Vincenzo Filicaia,
I have agreed with your answer. But I would be sorry if you thought that I claimed to be praised by you; and whoever gave that to you to understand has done me a great injustice; I have never claimed it from anyone, since I know too well my little merit, and to know how to praise only someone who is worthy is in you a quality of such a great price that I would not want to lose it. If you therefore wish to please me, do not waste your time and your talents on me in vain, although I do not refuse the offer which you make to me to wish to work for me hereafter. Know, however, that without flattering me or my faults, you will work for me every time you compose works worthy of you, of any kind whatsoever. Also, I will be indebted to you for the unique glory to which I can claim without temerity, that is, to know what is good and to taste it where it is found. And since you don't mind being encouraged by me, do me the pleasure of continuing more and more to enrich our century with your works. You owe this to God, to Italy, to yourself, and to me, too, since you want it. As for me, I will hold it to honour that it will be said one day that Kristina, although a foreigner, has read and tasted the works of the great Filicaia. May God keep you and bless you as I desire.
