Francis William Bain on Kristina's secret meetings with the Jesuits, her final decision to become Catholic, and how she had to hide her new faith and intentions for safety's sake

Kristina's letter of October 18/28 (New Style), 1651 to Antoine Godeau, Bishop of Grasse, is here:

Kristina's letter of March 10/20 (Old Style), 1652 to her cousin the Landgrave Friedrich of Hesse-Darmstadt is here:

The account:

The steps Christina took in preparing the execution of her plan, her refusal to marry, her substitution of Charles Gustavus, have been already related; she now made another advance.

The Portuguese ambassador, Don Joseph Pinto Pereira, who came to Sweden in 1650 [sic], could talk no language but his own; his secretary, who served him as interpreter with the Queen, fell ill, and Pereira, in the interval, made use of his confessor, Macedo (The honour of converting her has been disputed between Macedo and a certain Francken. Dates give the preference to the former: but it is to be observed, that the Jesuits were merely the instruments called in by Christina to complete her design, determined upon long before. This is apparent, not only from what has been said, but from the narration of Cassati. The Queen amused them with caustical questions, quite other than they expected, played with them a little, and then suddenly gave in just when they thought themselves furthest from their object.), for the same purpose. Christina seized the opportunity one day to inform Macedo that she would like to discourse with some one of his persuasion on private matters, if he could manage to bring them to Stockholm without writing for them, as she did not wish to entrust so dangerous a business to paper. The delighted Jesuit entered heartily into the scheme: they held frequent conversations in the presence of the unsuspecting Pereira, and it was arranged that Macedo should go to Rome and communicate with Piccolomini, General of the Order. He accordingly applied for leave of absence, on the ground that the climate did not suit him; this, however, being refused, he took French leave, and suddenly disappeared. The ambassador prevailed on the Queen to send after him: but she took good care that he should not be caught. On his arrival at Rome, he found Piccolomini dead; the new General, however, immediately selected two men suitable for the task: Francesco Malines, Professor of Theology at Turin, and Paolo Cassati, Professor of Mathematics at Rome. They arrived at Stockholm in March, 1652, so well disguised that Rosenhane, a senator, and Wachtmeister, Grand Equerry, with whom they fell in, took them for two Italian gentlemen travelling to view the country, and told the Queen so. Christina swiftly divined their errand and summoned them to Court. Seizing a favourable moment, when all were leaving the dining-hall, she whispered to Cassati, "Perhaps you have letters for me?" and he, without turning round, answered "Yes." She rejoined: "Do not mention them to any one." They now held frequent interviews with her, and were very much astonished at the questions she put them — as to whether there was any real distinction between good and evil other than utility; of the existence of Providence, and the immortality of the soul; in short, philosophical lemmas rather than religious points of dispute between the churches. In the whole course of their efforts it is perfectly obvious that Christina was merely delaying a foregone conclusion. "What should you think", she suddenly asked them at a moment when they were inclined to despair, "if I were nearer becoming a Catholic than you suppose?" "Hearing this", says Cassati, "we felt like men raised from the dead." She then asked whether the Pope could grant permission to receive the Lord's Supper once in the year, according to the Lutheran rites. He replied that he could not. "Then", she exclaimed, "there is no help for it — I must resign the crown."

She now sent Cassati back to Rome to prepare for her subsequent arrival and find out what her expenses might come to should she reside there; just as it is probable Bourdelot had some such commission in France. She wrote letters to the Pope, Innocent X., and Cardinal Chigi by means of Malines. In the meantime she carefully preserved silence; the only man in Sweden who was privy to her design was Pimentelli, who kept the secret. She had indeed great reason to be cautious. In a country like Sweden it could have gone hard with her had her intention of becoming a Catholic been commonly known. To reject Lutheranism was to desert the traditions of her house, and a kind of national insult, for which her countrymen have never forgiven her. She wrote ambiguously to Godeau, Bishop of Grasse, who had written to her expressing his wish that she might put the coping stone on her virtues by being converted, to say that what he wishes cannot be; she has long been persuaded that what she believes is that which she ought to believe. And in the very month in which the Jesuits arrived in Sweden, she wrote to Prince Frederick, Landgrave of Hesse, to dissuade him from taking the very step she was meditating herself, wherein she confines herself to purely political grounds:

"March 10, 1652.
"MY COUSIN,
"My reason for not breaking silence before was that I might not bother you with a letter which will not please you, since you will learn from it the rumour that is flying about here of the change you are meditating after the example of my cousin your brother, who has just declared himself a Roman Catholic. But our friendship of so many years' standing forbids me to keep you in ignorance of the unfavourable criticism all your friends are making of you in this matter. I think you cannot fail to notice it if you give it your attention, and you will easily judge that it is by reason of their instant request that I am speaking to you on the subject. They suppose that the influence arising from your friendship for me gives me sufficient power over your mind to enable me to restore it to its original sentiments. And therefore they have begged me to make this last effort, hoping that it may not be without effect. It is then in compliance with their wishes and to perform the duty which friendship imposes on me that I write you this letter, begging you to reflect upon it. It is not for me to deal with this matter after the fashion of Colleges or the Chairs of Theologians. I leave it to those whose business it is to discuss controversial points to cut their throats over the case at their good pleasure: it would sit ill upon me to preach to you on a subject so foreign to my profession. On this account I set aside the points of dispute between your Doctors and those of the Church of Rome. And since I am of a third religion, which, having discovered the truth, has cast away their views as false, it behoves me to speak to you as a neutral party, who will attack you on only one point, on which you ought to be sensitive; and it is that of honour. Can you be ignorant how much converts are hated by those whose views they quit? and do you not know, from so many illustrious examples, how they are despised by those whose side they adopt? If you take all this into consideration, I feel sure you will readily disapprove of your design. And I do not believe you would wish to do that, which, in my opinion, is so likely to cause you to repent, a thing that would be irretrievable, and would leave you for the rest of your life an eternal remorse. ... You see that I keep my word, and avoid burying myself in religious matters. ... We are born for the Sceptre and Arms; ... after making our profession so loud, it would be to profane the sanctuary to enter and handle the sacred objects: I must take care not to play the theologian."

Biography of Kristina, by Edgar Sanderson et al., year 1900, part 2

Source:

Six Thousand Years of History, volume 5 (Famous Women), pages 230 to 234, by Edgar Sanderson et al., 1900; original at Pennsylvania State University

The biography:

Coupled with Christina's distaste for marriage came a contemplation of the nuns of the Catholic Church. She heard about them when she was but nine years old, and that the unmarried state was held to be meritorious. "Ah", cried the child, "how fine that is! That shall be my religion!" For such thoughts, of course, she was gravely reprimanded — no Catholic could rule in Sweden. Later on, the same desire revealed itself in her conversation. She expressed the want of that gratification she would feel if she could believe as "so many noble spirits had believed for 1,600 years; if she could belong to a faith attested by millions of martyrs, confirmed by millions of miracles — above all", she would conclude, showing here her main thought, "which has produced so many admirable virgins, who have risen above the frailties of their sex, and consecrated their lives to God."

With these ideas uppermost in her mind she set out to study religion, and for this purpose was desirous of hearing the most eloquent advocates of each sect and faith. This may have been the ruling cause which brought scholars to the court. The arguments of any one sect against its adversary she turned back against itself. Thus she would compare the acts of Moses with those of Mohammed; she contemplated the thoughts of the ancients, the gentiles, and the atheists. She remained a natural believer in the existence of God, and thus returned ever and again to the thought that there must be some way of worshiping Him more becoming than another. At last she began to believe that the eternal safety of the soul was in question. At this stage in her contemplations she began to intrigue, it may be said, with the Catholic Church.

There was at the court a Portuguese Ambassador who could speak no Swedish; when he came into the royal presence, he was compelled to address the Queen through his confessor, a Jesuit named Father Macedo. While the Ambassador vainly imagined the Queen was talking on Portuguese relations, she was engaged in religious controversies with Macedo. Finally, in this manner, she confided to him the astounding intelligence that she desired to join the Catholic Church. On this Macedo disappeared. Christina proposed to pursue him with officers. But she had secretly dispatched him to the general of the Jesuits at Rome, who was entreated to send to her some of the most trusted members of his order. She received answer that Malines and Casati, two highly trusted fathers, would arrive in Stockholm toward the end of February.

While the Queen was at supper, two gentlemen who had traveled complained of the cold, but General Wachmeister rallied them, and said the two Italians on the journey with them had not shown such fear of the cold. The Queen asked if the Italians were musicians; the general said they were two gentlemen traveling to see the country. The Queen said she would by all manner of means like to see them. The next day they were presented to Magnus, the favorite, who at once took them to her majesty. She, on her part, reckoning the time to be ripe for the Jesuits to come, took occasion to secretly say, "Perhaps you have letters for me!" To this Casati, without turning his head, said yes. "Do not mention them to anyone!" whispered Christina. Later she secretly received the letters. "When she was alone with us", says Casati, (writing to Alexander VII afterward and signing himself "the most humble and obedient son in Christ of your Holiness, Paolo Casati, of the Company of Jesus") "her Majesty began to thank us in the most courteous terms for the pains we had taken in making the voyage on her account. She assured us that whatever danger might arise to us from being discovered, we should not fear, since she would not suffer that evil should befall us. She charged us to be secret and not to confide in anyone, pointing out by name some of those to whom she feared we might give our confidence in process of time. She encouraged us to hope that if she should receive satisfaction, our journey should not have been made in vain."

The Jesuits thought to begin with the catechism, but Christina set out on questions of the most recondite nature — namely, good and evil, Providence, immortality, external forms and their utility. The Jesuits were somewhat puzzled for arguments to uphold the invocation of the saints, and the veneration of images and saints, but Christina, being the better controvertist, supplied these missing defences, to the joy of the fathers, who at once decided that she was under the immediate direction of the Holy Ghost. Some days she would coquette with them. They would do well to go, she would tell them, she thought she would never be wholly reconciled. This the fathers would attribute to Satan. "What would you say", she would then ask suddenly, "if I were nearer to becoming a Catholic than you suppose?" "We seemed like men raised from the dead", says Casati. Could not the Pope grant permission to receive the Lord's supper once a year according to Luther's rite? The fathers said nay. "Then", said Christina, "there is no help. I must resign the crown."

The Jesuits departed for Rome, to acquaint the Church with its victory over a Queen of the heretics, and to prepare for her solemn and triumphant entry into the pale of the true faith. As early as October, 1651, when Father Macedo disappeared, Christina had mentioned officially the possibility of her abdication. It had been first talked of at Paris, the literary coterie having posted off the news. Christina told her Senate that, if she resigned, [Charles] Gustavus, the heir, her cousin, could secure a more desirable marriage. The Senate pleaded, and Christina withdrew her resignation, but with the condition that she should not be pressed to marry. Yet [Charles] Gustavus did not despair of winning her, and renewed his court without success. Two years later, the news spread over Sweden that the Queen still meant to abdicate. Because she was the daughter of Gustavus Adolphus, and because her reign had been very prosperous, a change to the young generalissimo was regarded with gloomy apprehensions. Her religious state of mind was still a secret. The Senate met at Upsal and responded eloquently to her speech announcing abdication, that they had expected her promises to continue the government would have been of longer duration. The new Prince, Charles (Karl X), was put under obligations to pay her 200,000 rix-dollars a year, and several provinces were signed over to her to assure her pension. On the 21st of May she solemnly fixed on the 24th [sic] of June, 1654, as the day when she should cease to be Queen. Her oration drew tears from the eyes of the Senate. The day before the time when she would no more be Queen, she insulted the Portuguese minister-resident, ordering him by private letter to quit Sweden, but the Senate, on learning of her mad act, sent privately to the minister, and told him to be patient, for the Queen's power would endure but a few days longer, when amends should be made to him. It seems probable that this proceeding was merely a ruse, to shield the Portuguese people.

French translation (my own; I cannot tag it as such due to character limits in the tags):

English translation (my own):

Report of the beginning and course of the conversion of Her Majesty Kristina, Queen of Sweden, from a letter sent by Father Casati of the Society of Jesus, who was called by Her said Majesty in the year 1652 with Father Francisco de Molines from Italy to go about this work.
Although the Most Serene Queen was brought up in the Lutheran sects, read their books diligently, and was also taught by the preachers, she did not find any satisfaction or pleasure in any of them; therefore, she remained in a state of anxiety about all this for eight years. In the meantime, she diligently researched the Catholic religion, as well as other sects, and cleared up her doubtful opinions by consulting learned men.

Now, of all these religions and sects, she found none that satisfied her conscience, considering only the principles in which she was born and brought up, not to act contrary to the rule of her mind — a resolution she maintained for two years. But the goodness of God also wanted to meet her sincere longing with His grace, when, in this ongoing battle, the ambassador sent from Portugal to Her Majesty, with two fathers from the Society, one of whom was named Father António Macedo, arrived happily in Stockholm as the said legate's interpreter.

The message gave the Queen the opportunity to honestly reveal all her wavering thoughts to the said fathers, whom she considered to be well-qualified and suitable for this her intention. After revealing her salutary thoughts, she persuaded the fathers to go to Rome as soon as possible, therefore even without expelling his legate, and to deliver her letters to the venerable Father General of the Society of Jesus, Father Francesco Piccolomini. To this effect, that he would send two fathers, namely of a Romance-speaking nation, with whom she wanted to discuss the religious matter, with a certain assurance, according to fictitious truth, that she would adopt the Catholic faith.

When Father António Macedo accepted the expedition assigned to him, he left Stockholm in complete silence (mostly without any of the special feelings of his legate, almost suspicious of his departure), and arrived towards the end of October 1651. However, shortly before this, the Father General had died, and so the letter entrusted to him was handed over to the then-appointed Vicar General, Father Goswin Nickel. The said Father Macedo's unexpected arrival, which could not have happened without great disgust for despotism, left many of his confidants, who were ignorant of this highly important task, in astonishment and outrage.

For this purpose, Father Casati and Father Francesco Molines were appointed by the said Father Goswin Nickel. They both arrived in Stockholm almost on the approaching St. Matthew's Day 1652, at which time Her Royal Majesty was expecting them from Rome, they having received information from her, who, after frequent conferences, for which the Queen's remarkable wisdom made the opportunity and arrangements at a certain place and time; during which the grace of God appeared in apparent presence, and the most difficult mysteries of the faith (which had previously been kept from the Queen's mind) were successfully discussed. As a result, she had gained such an understanding of the Catholic faith that she needed no further instruction, apart from the removal of a few doubts, from which she was released with the help of the Most High after the answer was given.

She therefore made this entire resolution to accept the Catholic faith at the end of April of the said year; and because she considered this venerable work so carefully, so that the royal honour would not be detrimental to her intention by having to overlook the protestation of the faith in the government, she expressly declared before Father Casati that she would completely quit the realm.

For this purpose she sent the Father to Rome, so that through the Father General the intention of His Papal Holiness could be presented, and the necessary information on this matter could be obtained. The said Father therefore left at the beginning of May 1652, but the courier the Queen was expecting was late, which meant that no further letter was sent to His Papal Holiness. She therefore ordered him to remain in Hamburg until winter [...], which she did on May 21 of the said year, so that he could go to Rome to the Father General with his credentials handed over.

For the rest, he should have received the detailed report from Father Molines, but because Father Molines and the letter entrusted to him did not appear at a certain time, Father Casati left Rome towards the end of October to attend to his affairs and to receive information from His Eminence Cardinal Chigi, now reigning Roman Pope Alexander VII (to whom alone, apart from the Father General of the Society, this great work had been entrusted), and he arrived in Hamburg at the end of December, where he found a letter from the Queen addressed to him, with the following wording: he should send the expedition to Stockholm to the Queen and hold off on speaking until the arrival of Father Molines; but, in order to prevent Father Molines from staying too long, the Queen gave him permission to travel to Italy again, where he then arrived in Rome on June 25.

In the meantime, after his departure from Hamburg, the Spanish legate Don Antonio Pimentel arrived in Sweden with Father Carl Mannerscheid, a priest of the Society of Jesus, who then found the said Father Molines there, who had previously been known to him in the Netherlands.

In the meantime, the Queen had entrusted the said Spanish ambassador with her plan to go to the royal Spanish lands. At this time, Lord Pimentel was to have left Spain, but, due to various obstacles, Father Brother Juan Bautista Güemes, of the Dominican Order, the Spanish legate's chaplain, then serving His Royal Majesty of Denmark in Copenhagen, was sent to Father Casati in Italy on his departure and then to Spain, from which it is clear how carefully the Queen had presented him with such a seriously formed opinion, as was immediately evident from her letter to Father Casati of August 1653.

Particularly when she expressed her noble and unspeakable desire, how she was always prepared to meet all challenges with her steadfast and indomitable spirit. Finally, Her Majesty's last letter to Father Casati, dated Uppsala in February 1654, was sent, in which she informed him with consolation and joy of how she had happily decided to resign and surrender her kingdom (with the pretext of trying the Dutch baths), all of which she had put into action according to her wish, in a way that was known to everyone.

In the year 1654, immediately before the birth of Christ [Christmas], in Brussels, in the presence of His Serenity Archduke Leopold, General Montecuccoli (who was summoned to this place by the Queen herself), Don Antonio Pimentel and Don Antonio de la Cueva, she made her profession of faith, to which, in the absence of the others, the aforesaid Dominican Father (who later became her chaplain and confessor) was ordained.

Swedish translation (my own):

Vad man skall betrakta i fader Casatis berättelse om Hennes Kungliga Majestät Kristinas, Sveriges drottnings omvändelse.

English translation (my own):

What to consider in Father Casati's report of the conversion of Her Royal Majesty Kristina, Queen of Sweden.
1. He reports that Her Royal Majesty read the books of the Lutherans around her during her upbringing and was instructed by the preachers and found no satisfaction from them, even remaining in the unrest of her conscience for a full eight years. Because she must have been in such unrest for three years before her coronation, a report must be given elsewhere as to whether Her Royal Majesty has ever been found to have read the books from which one can take the evidence for the papal traditions, and to have compared them with the papal writings and to have researched them diligently.

2. And when she had already done this, or in the meantime, when she found some doubt, she cleared up her doubts with her pastors.

3. And when this happened and she found no satisfaction, she called for some theologians from her own Academy in Uppsala or from foreign evangelical academies and presented her scruples of conscience to them.

4. Whether Grotius, Saumaise, Bochart, Naudé, Descartes, Vossius, Heinsius, Bourdelot and others should not rather be called to her, who were partly atheists, partly in simulated atheism, secretly Papists, partly indifferent in religion, and who either cannot give a true report to Her Royal Majesty on religion or who have done her justice either directly or indirectly in her evangelical faith.

5. Now when she had remained in her doubts for two years and had resolved to adhere to the religion in which she had been brought up and not to do anything against the rule of her common sense, she had decided whether she had been free in the meantime from such people as had been able to teach her a poison of false doctrine.

6. As now Her Royal Majesty has disclosed her wavering thoughts and her intentions to Father António de Macedo, she sent him to Rome to the Father General of the Society of Jesus with the request to assign to her two fathers, of which nation it did not matter, with whom she wanted to discuss religious matters.

Because, after their arrival, she declared herself Roman within two months, whether it was a right way to investigate the truth, to report unilaterally on the grounds of religion only from those who were accused of great idolatry and of a great apostasy from the pure apostolic doctrine on important grounds that have not yet been refuted, and not to hear the other side on every point of dispute, whether it would not be rather Christian, reasonable and fair either to submit separately to her theologians everything that the Jesuit fathers had presented to her to be resolved, or to have it dealt with by foreign theologians. A case that has not been heard should not be abandoned or condemned.

7. Whether the Jesuit Fathers should not be highly accused of being seductors of the Queen, and because they were found to be spreading their poison in the kingdom of Sweden, secretly and under foreign habit, contrary to the kingdom's laws, [...] their generals and all their followers should be punished.

8. Whether the Pope himself and his clergy should not be declared enemies, since he not only puts all the Evangelicals in their place every year, but also himself, through his emissaries, missionaries and spies, is disturbing all kingdoms and countries, and in particular has deprived the Swedish Kingdom of its Queen.

9. Whether it would not be advisable, since Father Casati's report was printed, to await a better report.

Letter to Kristina from Father Goswin Nickel, dated October 20/30 (New Style), 1652

Christine de Suède (Suite), article written by Father J. Burnichon for Études religieuses, historiques et littéraires: vingt-quatrième année, sixième série, tome cinquième, pages 865 to 866, published by the Fathers of the Company of Jesus, 1880

The letter (translated into French from the original Italian or Latin by Father Burnichon):

English translation (my own):

Recently we had our Ascanio here. I have learned from him of Your Majesty's good health, for which I am very happy, as well as of the extreme kindness which you are pleased to show towards him and towards me and for which I am infinitely grateful. I have given Ascanio everything necessary for his return, and if he has not yet arrived, he certainly cannot be far away. Your Majesty will know from him with what ardour I have worked to carry out his orders and how willing I am to do so again, with the help of God.

I am not writing to Signor Arnoldo, because his letter of September 21 tells me that he is no longer there. I wish Your Majesty all desirable happiness, and if I can be of further use to you, please let me know.

The letter (translated into French from the original Latin by Father Burnichon):

INSTRUCTIONS AUX DEUX PÈRES QUI DOIVENT ÊTRE ENVOYÉS EN SUÈDE

GOSWIN NICKEL

Goswin Nickel.

English translation (my own):

Instructions to the two fathers who must be sent to Sweden.
1. — The goal of this mission is the extension of the Catholic religion and especially the conversion of the person who has requested them and whom we will call Don Teofilo. The two fathers must therefore fully appreciate the greatness of the work that God has entrusted to them, remembering that they are His workers and His helpers in the propagation of the Gospel. This is why they shall take care to make themselves, through deep humility, frequent prayer and continual mortification, instruments suitable for procuring the glory of God.

2. — The principal means to achieve this end must be first of all a complete mistrust of themselves — for man, ashes and dust, can do nothing good by his own strength, — and then, a great trust in the goodness of God, who made everything that exists out of nothing and who often "chooses the weak to confound the strong."

3. — So that they can collect more fruit in the field to which they are destined, they will have all the spiritual powers, which the religious of the Company can enjoy in the countries of the North, all the privileges inscribed in the Summary, and those we hold by communication. The superior is vested with the same powers as the rectors of colleges.

4. — That in all things they maintain the most perfect union and concord; may charity always reign between them. The superior member of the mission will be the oldest in age and religion; in our letters we will call him Don Lucio; the other, Don Bonifacio, will be consultor and admonitor.

5. — They shall write often, at least whenever the opportunity presents itself, to me first, then to the future general; they will report on their journey, their work, the success they hope for, etc. And in order to be able to write with more certainty, they will use the figures which I have agreed with Don Bonifacio.

6. — They shall meet in Venice where they will put on secular clothes, in order to travel more freely in heretical lands. But they shall be careful not to take worldly liberty with the clothes. United with God at heart, they shall make sure to live as in colleges, attending to the prescribed hours as much as possible in prayer, meditation, examinations of conscience, and observing with all possible fidelity all the rules of the Company according to the convenience of time and place.

7. — They shall not visit any of our colleagues on their way, and they shall avoid giving rise to suspicion and even more so from making known to anyone the purpose of their mission, lest nothing be disclosed before the time of what should be secret and thus perish in the germ the fruit that one has reason to hope for.

8. — Having reached the end of their journey, they shall take all their care to adapt to the will and character of Don Teofilo. Therefore, they shall refrain from working for the conversion of any other person without his consent; they will even avoid making their condition known. A lack of caution and discretion would be enough to expose their persons, and that of Don Teofilo, to serious danger.

9. — It seems that Don Teofilo takes great pleasure in the study of the Greek language and letters as well as the ancient philosophers. This is why it would be good for the two fathers to perfect themselves during the journey in the knowledge and use of Greek. They should also keep in mind the main areas of controversy with which they will probably have to deal.

10. — They shall stay very far from the affairs of the world and even more from those of politics, knowing how foreign they are to our vocation. Also, even if Don Teofilo gives them all his confidence, they must never allow themselves to recommend this one or that one to him for positions or dignities; but, "attentive to themselves and to the doctrine", they must strictly confine themselves to the circle of spiritual affairs.

11. — They shall strive by the example of their life to attract their neighbors to the love of virtue. If sometimes they find themselves obliged to argue with heretics, they must remember religious modesty and always avoid noisy disputes.

12. — If God grants success to their work, and Don Teofilo decides to return to the bosom of the Catholic Church, they will suggest that he write to the Sovereign Pontiff in time, to explain to him, as to the Supreme Pastor, the feelings of his soul. If they could not find a safer route, they would address the letter to the future general of the Company, who would be responsible for delivering it to His Holiness.

13. — Finally, the light of the Holy Spirit will make them know what they will have to do in the occasions that we cannot foresee, and, for my part, I shall not fail to communicate to them what would seem appropriate to me depending on the circumstances. In the meantime, I pray to divine goodness to bless them and make their fatigue and their sweat bear fruit a hundredfold.
