Premiérement, il m'a dit qu'il n'avoit rien reçu dans cette affaire de la part de Sa Sainteté, mais seulement qu'en cas d'élection il tâchât de faire élire un Roi Catholique; qu'au reste qui que ce fût, cela étoit entiérement indifférent au Pape. Il ajouta qu'il ne pouvoit rien faire à cette heure pour Sa Majesté, parce qu'il n'avoit pas encore reçu le commandement de Sa Sainteté. Mais quand il recevra (ce dont je l'ai assuré) particuliérement un Bref Apostolique à la République, il veut employer toute sa capacité pour le service de V. M. Néanmoins son sentiment est, de ne parler de rien avant ce tems-là, mais d'attendre le dernier point de l'élection; & comme il prévoyoit une grande discorde, il croyoit qu'il seroit à propos qu'au tems même que les Etats ne seroient pas d'accord, il faloit pour les accorder présenter V. M. Il y a deux Prétendans, le Moscovite & le Neubourg. Le Moscovite a pour lui la famille de Messieurs Pac avec ses adhérens, mais c'est seulement pour servir de contrepoids aux Princes Radzivils, qui veulent le Duc de Neubourg. Par cette raison il pense que l'Election du Moscovite ne réussira pas, ses promesses de millions étant vaines & sans fondement; & d'ailleurs celui de ses Fils qu'il destine pour la Royauté étant âgé seulement de huit ans (car il ne veut pas donner son Fils ainé) auroit par conséquent besoin de Tuteurs, dont le choix seroit plus difficile que l'Election même.
On croit que la plus grande partie est pour Neubourg, mais elle trouvera aussi des contradictions. Pour les difficultés à l'égard de V. M. on n'en trouvera pas d'autre que le sexe. Mais pour la lever cette difficulté, je recueillerai bien des raisons que je mettrai en ordre, & après quoi je les envoyerai à V. M.
Cependant dans trois jours on assemblera par toute la Pologne les Diétines, où l'on raisonnera sur l'Instruction Royale, à laquelle l'Archevêque a ajouté la sienne, dans laquelle il demande qu'à la grande Diette prochaine du 27. d'Août, après la résignation du Roi, on tâche de faire élire son Successeur sans aucun délai. J'assisterai aussi à l'une de ces Diétines pour avoir une entiére connoissance de ce qu'on y traittera, & j'informerai V. M. par la poste suivante de ce qui s'y sera passé.
Au-reste comme on ne fera rien jusqu'au 27. d'Août, Monsieur le Nonce croit qu'il n'est pas nécessaire que je demeure ici, & qu'il vaut mieux être ailleurs, pour ne pas donner de soupçon, comme il est arrivé ici au sujet d'un Pére Carmélite venant d'Autriche pour visiter les Maisons de son Ordre, que l'on a soupçonné, à cause de son long séjour, de pratiquer quelque chose en faveur de l'Empereur. Je prendrai bien garde à cela pour qu'on ne remarque rien, & j'employerai ce tems pour rendre des visites à la Noblesse, parmi laquelle j'ai des connoissances, & je parlerai de la meilleure maniére & avec les plus grandes précautions à l'honneur de V. M.
La résolution du Roi de Pologne se fonde sur les promesses du Roi de France, (savoir, qu'il aura 50000 ducats par an, sans les autres revenus qu'on lui assignera) & du Royaume de Naples. Monsieur le Nonce m'a raconté aussi en confidence, qu'il a travaillé pour V. M. par la Commission de Monsieur le Cardinal Azzolino auprès du Roi de Pologne, pour qu'il donne à V. M. les Biens de Naples; mais le Roi lui avoit remontré les grandes dettes dont ces Biens sont chargés. Voilà tout ce qu'il m'a dit, & ce que j'ai à communiquer à V. M. J'en écrirai davantage par la premiére poste; à cette heure je la supplie très-humblement de me pardonner les fautes que j'ai commises dans les Dépêches à cause de peu de tems, & je vous consacre tous mes vœux, &c.

Först berättade han för mig att han inte hade fått något i denna fråga från Hans Helighet, utan bara att han i händelse av val skulle försöka få en katolsk konung vald; att den dessutom, vem det än var, var helt likgiltig för påven. Han tillade att han inte kunde göra något i denna stund för Hans Majestät, eftersom han ännu inte hade fått Hans Helighets befallning. Men när han får (som jag har försäkrat honom) ett partikulär apostoliskt brev till Republiken, vill han använda all sin kapacitet för Ers Majestäts tjänst. Icke desto mindre är hans känsla att inte tala om någonting före den tiden, utan att invänta valets sista punkt; och då han förutsåg en stor oenighet, ansåg han att det vore ändamålsenligt, att just i den tid, som Ständerna icke var överens, var det nödvändigt att framlägga det för Ers Majestät för att komma överens. Det finns två utmanare, Muscovite och Neuburg. Muskoviten har för honom familjen Pac med sina anhängare, men den är bara för att tjäna som en motvikt till Radziwill-prinsarna, som vill ha hertigen av Neuburg. Av denna anledning tror han att muskovitens val inte kommer att lyckas, ty hans löften om miljoner är fåfängda och grundlösa; och dessutom skulle hans son, som han avser till kungligheter, endast åtta år gammal (eftersom han inte vill ge sin äldste son), följaktligen behöva förmyndare, vilkas val skulle vara svårare än själva valet.
Man tror att det mesta är för Neuburg, men det kommer också att finnas motsägelser. För svårigheter med Ers Majestät kommer det inte att finnas någon annan än Ert kön. Men för att undanröja denna svårighet kommer jag att samla många skäl som jag skall ställa i ordning, och efter vilka jag skickar dem till Ers Majestät.
Emellertid skola om tre dagar dietinerna samlas i hela Polen, där de resonera efter den kungliga instruktion, till vilken ärkebiskopen har lagt sin egen, i vilken han begär att vid nästa stora rådsmöte den 27 augusti, efter konungens avsägelse, försökte man utan dröjsmål få hans efterträdare vald. Jag skall också närvara vid ett av dessa rådsmöten för att ha full kunskap om vad som kommer att behandlas där, och jag skall informera Ers Majestät vid nästa inlägg om vad som kommer att ha hänt där.
Dessutom, eftersom man inte kan göra något förrän den 27 augusti, anser nuntien att det inte är nödvändigt för mig att stanna här, och att det är bättre att vara någon annanstans, för att inte ge upphov till misstankar, eftersom han kom på ämnet av en karmelitfader som kom från Österrike för att besöka sin ordens hus, som på grund av sin långa vistelse misstänktes för att ha utövat något till förmån för kejsaren. Jag skall ta väl hand om detta, så att ingenting märks, och jag skall använda denna tid till att göra besök hos adeln, bland vilka jag har bekanta, och jag kommer att tala på bästa sätt och med största försiktighet till Eders Majestäts ära.
Konungen av Polens resolution bygger på löften från konungen av Frankrike (nämligen att han kommer att ha 50.000 dukater om året, utan de andra intäkterna som tilldelats honom) och konungariket Neapel. Nuntien berättade också för mig i förtroende att han arbetade för Ers Majestät genom kardinal Azzolinos uppdrag till kungen av Polen, så att han gav Ers Majestät Neapels egendom; men konungen hade visat honom de stora skulde, med vilka dessa varor är lastade. English translation (my own):
First, he told me that he had received nothing on this matter from His Holiness, but only that in case of election he would try to have a Catholic King elected; that besides, whoever it was, it was entirely indifferent to the Pope. He added that he could do nothing at this hour for His Majesty, because he had not yet received His Holiness's command. But when he receives (of which I have assured him) a particular apostolic brief to the Republic, he wishes to employ all his capacity for Your Majesty's service. Nevertheless his feeling is to speak of nothing before that time, but to await the last point of the election; and as he foresaw a great discord, he thought it would be expedient that at the very time that the Estates were not in agreement, it was necessary to present it to Your Majesty to agree. There are two contenders, Muscovite and Neuburg. The Muscovite has for him the Pac family with its adherents, but it is only to serve as a counterweight to the Radziwill princes, who want the Duke of Neuburg. For this reason, he thinks that the Muscovite's election will not succeed, his promises of millions being vain and baseless; and besides, that of his son, whom he intends for royalty, being only eight years old (because he does not want to give his eldest son), would consequently need guardians, the choice of which would be more difficult than the election itself.
It is believed that most of it is for Neuburg, but there will also be contradictions. For difficulties with Your Majesty, there will be no other than your sex. But to remove this difficulty, I will collect many reasons which I will put in order, and after which I will send them to Your Majesty.
However, in three days, the dietines will be assembled throughout Poland, where they will reason on the royal instruction, to which the Archbishop has added his own, in which he asks that at the next great council meeting of August 27, after the King's resignation, an attempt was made to have his successor elected without delay. I will also attend one of these council meetings so as to have a full knowledge of what will be treated there, and I will inform Your Majesty by the next post of what will have happened there.
Besides, as we will do nothing until the 27th of August, the Nuncio believes that it is not necessary for me to stay here, and that it is better to be elsewhere, so as not to give rise to suspicion, as he arrived on the subject of a Carmelite Father coming from Austria to visit the houses of his order, who was suspected, because of his long stay, of practicing something in favour of the Emperor. I will take good care of this so that nothing is noticed, and I will use this time to pay visits to the nobility, among whom I have acquaintances, and I will speak in the best manner and with the greatest precautions to Your Majesty's honour.
The resolution of the King of Poland is based on the promises of the King of France (namely, that he will have 50,000 ducats a year, without the other revenues assigned to him) and of the kingdom of Naples. The Nuncio also told me in confidence that he worked for Your Majesty through the commission of Cardinal Azzolino to the King of Poland, so that he gave Your Majesty the property of Naples; but the King had shown him the great debts with which these goods are loaded. This is all he told me, and what I have to communicate to Your Majesty. I will write more by the first post; at this hour I very humbly beg you to forgive me for the mistakes I made in the despatches because of short time, and I consecrate all my best wishes to you, etc.
