New scans!
Just yesterday, on March 10, 2026, Riksarkivet made available the scans (dated February 27) of K 400 (Nr 7) of the Azzolino Collection: the batch of chronologically ordered letters from 1655 to 1657! It's a very exciting day and I can't wait to explore this archive.
Link to the archive here (please consider that at the time of writing, people outside Sweden like myself may still have trouble accessing the site without a VPN, it's been like this since December but the people at Riksarkivet have been working to fix this and other issues):
Riksarkivet, Kungliga arkiv; Azzolinosamlingen; K 400 (Nr 7)/Kronologiskt ordnad brevserie. I.
I hope this may be of interest to any other Kristina aficionados out there and those interested in the 17th century as a whole, whether you're professional, academic or amateur (I'm only the latter, but it's still very important to me). It's always a powerful experience to be able to look through these windows into that world, and especially with this year making 400 years since Kristina was born.

Sacred Royal Majesty,
Those sentiments of respect that have always inspired me to venerate with unparalleled devotion the name and sublime virtues of Your Majesty still give me the courage to appear in the coming days of the Holy Christmas before your royal presence to offer you the usual tribute of my most humble servitude, with the announcement of every felicity and consolation. May Your Majesty deign to remain persuaded that the desire I have to add further tokens of my consummate reverence corresponds in every respect to the memory I preserve of the graces bestowed upon me by the great generosity of your soul, so that I may take this as a motive to redouble them through the continuation of your most benign patronage, which I humbly request with your royal commands; and to Your Majesty I bow most deeply.
The remarkable graces bestowed upon me by Your Majesty's unparalleled beneficence are always highly fixed in my memory; and this remembrance, being in itself so joyful, would inspire me with justified excitement to continually render acts of my most humble servitude in whatever manner my own tenuity would permit, were my desires not tempered by the consideration of the reverence due from all, and from me in particular, to Your Majesty and to your supreme rank.
May Your Majesty nevertheless exercise a measure of your innate, consummate clemency in granting me permission, during the upcoming festivities of the Most Holy Christmas, to take the liberty of expressing to you, with the announcement of the greatest felicity and contentment, my most humble servitude, in order to recognise in myself a constancy of veneration and obsequiousness corresponding in every way to the glory of your name and the sublimity of your merit, and intended to make myself ever more worthy of the honour of your royal protection; and to Your Majesty I bow most deeply. Gaudenzio Claretta on Kristina's arrival in Rome

La regina Cristina di Svezia in Italia (1655-1689): Memorie storiche ed aneddotiche con documenti, pages 27 to 32, published by Gaudenzio Claretta, 1892; original at University Library Basel (Universitätsbibliothek Basel)
Pope Alexander's brief of October 14/24 (New Style), 1655 for Kristina is here:
The account:
English translation (my own):
I. — Already at the end of November there was talk in Rome that the Queen was about to approach, and Alexander, who already on October 24 had wanted to favour her by means of a brief with which he granted her the right to visit and also lodge, pending the journey, in the convents and monasteries of friars and nuns, and to take there persons of the same sex of her retinue, seriously took steps to welcome her with all possible solemnity.
Having abandoned the idea of giving Kristina lodgings in the Palazzo Altemps in Piazza della Fiammetta, it was decided that, once the embellishment of the Palazzo Farnese was completed, she would have it for herself. In the meantime, she would be housed in the quarters of Innocent VIII in the Torre dei Venti in the Vatican, since the casaletto or small quarters of Pius V were unsuitable. And because her stay there was to be so brief, the ceilings were painted and gilded, a new gallery was built, and it was furnished with precious fabrics and brocades donated by the Roman barons.
Alexander VII himself had wanted to visit the works and encourage the craftsmen to work with alacrity.
He had also commissioned cavaliere Bernini to design a splendid carriage and chair, adorned with statuettes and other ornaments carved in silver, and which were to be upholstered in blue velvet. Who would believe it? all of Rome was in motion. The Spanish minister, the Duke of Terranova, had purchased all the velvet available in the city; and private persons had even decorated the exteriors of their homes along the streets through which the procession was to pass.
There was no shortage of biting censure, however; and the usual malicious individuals born to criticise the actions of the authorities, and the seers, who, not without reason, observed that at a time when the state was not in the best financial condition, when the plague was beginning to spread here and there, it would have been prudent not to engage in such a squandering of public funds. And Cardinal Pallavicino himself, who provides us with these details, further warns that others, grounded in speculative arguments, warned "that all the doctrines of theologians and canonists regarding the honest or dishonest distribution of ecclesiastical revenues are based on this: that they must be used according to the presumed will of the donors. Given this, let us pretend that Charlemagne, Matilde, and all those princes who enriched the Roman Church with so many great possessions and jurisdictions had been asked whether they intended the Church's revenues to be applied in treating honourably a queen who had placed being a subject of this Church before being a queen. Who is so stupid as to be hesitant in the answer and not see that they would have said that if everything were lacking, the Pontiff and the cardinals should reduce the expenses of their courts in order to convert them to this holy and magnificent use?"
But despite all this, the criticisms grew when it was learned that the Pope had declared to the Curia that he would cover the expenses of the Queen's stay for as long as the Queen permitted. A generous concept, but one that stemmed from a mistaken idea about Kristina and her finances.
In addition to the cardinals delegated to receive the Queen — Giancarlo de' Medici and Friedrich, Landgrave of Hesse — and the four already mentioned to welcome her at the borders of the Papal States, the following were also appointed to serve her in Rome, as we have already mentioned: Princess Branciforte di Butera, the Princess of Rossano, the Duchess of Ceri, and Anna Maria Aldobrandini. Costanza, daughter of Alessandro Sforza, Count of Santa Fiora, and wife of Marquis Cornelio Bentivoglio of Ferrara, was chosen to accompany her from the border to Rome.
The first to arrive in Rome was Count Raimondo Montecuccoli, her majordomo, who lodged at the Due Spade; and he was then hosted by the Spanish ambassador.
Kristina arrived in Rome on December 20, having first stopped at the suburban Villa degli Olgiati, where the cardinal legates had gone. Pallavicino tells us that they did not, however, raise the Cross, since in the district of Rome this is not permitted to anyone other than the Pope. However, they had a most conspicuous entourage, dressed in robes, liveries, etc. Cardinal Giancarlo also brought with him four prelates, three dukes, and many marquises, all richly dressed.
Three leagues from that villa, the Queen's majordomo met the envoys and led them into a carriage. Upon reaching the villa, they found Kristina waiting for them at the foot of the steps, and she climbed into the Pope's carriage with them, entering the city through the Porta Portese, which had been opened for the first time. It was three in the morning, and the spectacle of lights and torches dispersing the darkness was delightful.
The various printed descriptions of those events tell more or less the same details; but those sent to our Courts by the agents of Savoy contain observations and judgements that contribute to increasing the value of the news. Let us begin with the dispatch referring to the Queen's arrival.
"This evening (December 20) the Queen of Sweden entered Rome privately. To meet her, seven miles outside the gate, His Holiness sent two cardinal deacon legates, the lords Cardinals de' Medici and the young man of Hesse (namely, the aforementioned Giancarlo, brother of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, and Karl [sic], Landgrave of Hesse). They departed with a large retinue of cavaliers in most superb clothing and livery, and a large number of equally sumptuous carriages.
Having reached Her Majesty, who was waiting for them at a distant hamlet, and having accompanied her, they returned with Her Majesty, in Cardinal de' Medici's carriage this time, and conducted her privately to the lodgings prepared for her by His Holiness in the Vatican, and to that part which faces the garden (that is, the gardens called Belvedere) quite distant from His Holiness's residence, having opened the entrance for her through a new gate in the walls.
Her Majesty will remain there until Our Lord gives her the public Consistory, which they say will be next Wednesday, after which she will retire to the Palazzo Farnesiano, prepared for her with all magnificence by that Highness, where she will be paid for, along with her entire family [servantry], by the Apostolic Chamber for the space of the three months that she says she intends to remain in this city — unless, however, he assigns her for this purpose a thousand scudi a day for the said period, as is more commonly believed, in addition to the gift made to her by this Highness of a carriage with six beautiful horses, a litter and a chair of blue velvet, covered with silver lace, with all the accompanying trappings."
The private entrance into Rome was made, as we have said, through the Porta Portese, which opens onto the public garden in the highest part of the Vatican, and through the reopened door, which had been closed after Emperor Charles V had passed through. The legates, having removed their travelling clothes and donned their cardinal's robes, had led the Queen before Alexander VII. She bowed three times and kissed his foot and hand, and he had her sit to the right of the dais on a chair without arms, but still under the baldaquin. Then he led her into a small room, where only the two Jesuit confessors were present, and where he kept her for a long time. And it is noteworthy here that the Pope had the porte-cochères kept raised, as he always ordered in his talks with the Queen.

"It had been lavishly decorated according to the Pope's orders, who had turned to the Roman families recently enriched by the popes' blood relatives for the decorations. Indeed, he jokingly said that if those furnishings had suffered, the Chamber might be aware of it. Having carefully inspected that area, and having noticed that under the north wind — since in the nearby tower, called the Tower of the Winds because all of them blow there and are depicted on the walls, — the scriptural saying omne malem ab aquilone [all evil comes from the North] was engraved, he genteelly had it covered with plaster."
porte-cochère = a gateway through which horse carriages pass, often into a courtyard.

The account:
IX.
Della sua gran virtude alcun conforto»;
[DANTE, Paradiso, c. XI, v. 55-57.]
English translation (my own):
IX. — Let us now continue the Queen's triumphal journey. After having stopped for eight days at Innsbruck, by way of Trento, where she was splendidly welcomed by that Prince-Bishop, she set out towards Veneto, without, however, visiting the Queen of the Adriatic, whom, although it had some resemblance to Stockholm, she was unable to see for the reasons given above. Only at Dolo had the Venetian Senate sent envoys to compliment her and serve her fish from Lake Garda, but, excusing her state of health, advised her to continue her journey.
Passing then to Verona, when she reached Revere, she also received special honours from the Gonzagas; and on November 21 she reached the frontier of the Ecclesiastical State. There three of the four papal legates presented themselves to her: Annibale Bentivoglio, Archbishop of Thebes, Luca Torrigiani, Archbishop of Ravenna, and Alessandro Cesarini, Governor of Rimini, the aforementioned, who offered her a carriage, a litter and a chair at every opportunity for the remainder of the journey. But from Mellara to Stellata she sailed on the Po on a beautiful bucintoro.
The vice-legate of Ferrara was there with the company of guards, lances, cuirasses and carabins, under the command of Don Innocenzo Conti, of the Dukes of Poli, general master of the camp of the Church, who had a select company of cavalry, led by the Marquis Carlo Teodoli. The Queen crossed the Po at Mirabello, a boundary dividing the Ferrarese from the Bolognese; and there she was complimented on behalf of the cardinal-legate of Bologna, Girolamo Lomellini, and by the vice-legate.
On the 26th, Cardinal-Legate Lomellini found himself in Bologna with a veritable army of prelates and gentlemen, armed and on horseback.
The honours were more than common, and those who wish to have a full account of them can consult with satisfaction the writing that gives us a detailed description. It will suffice to note briefly that Kristina was met by the standard-bearer, Count Gian Niccolò Tanari, at Porta Galliera, where the banners of the Colleges, the high-ranking City Officials and the Tribunes were hoisted.
And from there, after his harangue and the Queen's response, the triumphal march proceeded amid the sound of artillery fire, in which all the authorities took part, accompanying the Queen to the Cathedral and then to the public palazzo, where, on the threshold of the wide staircase, she was received by the legate, who had preceded her after the first meeting.
Arriving in the Farnese Hall, she saw one hundred and twenty ladies who, dressed with all elegance and a wealth of jewels, revered her. The Queen was lodged in the quarters designated for princes in transit at the expense of the Apostolic Chamber; and the procession, which numbered about two hundred people, was arranged throughout the city.
That evening, after splendid fireworks, a sumptuous ball was given in the Ercole Hall, at which, as usual, Kristina appeared bizarrely dressed, with a blond, curly wig on her head, smeared with pomade and sprinkled with powder of Cyprus, and a neckerchief of Genoese stitch with a ribbon the colour of fire around her neck. She then wore a short jacket of camlet of the same colour, trimmed with silver and gold, and had on a grey skirt embroidered with gold and silver lace.
The next day there were visits from the primary authorities, with all the official compliments that are described in detail in the aforementioned pamphlet. On the 27th the Queen visited San Luca on the Monte della Guardia, to whom she left as a gift a pearl necklace estimated to be worth 12,000 lire, according to Ghirelli, but with doubts from Malagola, who instead recalls the visits made by Kristina to San Michele in Bosco and to Santa Caterina, which followed on the 28th, and after which she wanted to go to the study of the illustrious writer Ulisse Adrovandi, who offered her his works in twelve volumes richly bound in crimson satin.
On that same day there was a sumptuous public luncheon, at which Kristina sat at the head of the table under a canopy; and the ladies were admitted, using the mask granted to them to make the appearance of the city more festive for the entire time of the Queen's stay in Bologna.
Towards the evening of the same day, Kristina went to the Collegio di Spagna, founded by Cardinal Egidio Albornoz, admiring that library rich in precious codices and very rare prints. Towards three in the morning she had much to enjoy a splendid joust, in which the principal knights of Bologna fought, and which was given in the theater specially built in the rooms of the Palazzo di Governo, which had the shape of a large ship, whose prow reached the facade of the Banchi above the fish ponds, and with its stern the musicians' railing. And, as a sign of admiration to the squads who, at the end of the spectacle, formed a half circle, had revered her, she shouted twice in a loud voice: "Evviva Bologna!" — "Long live Bologna!"
That same evening she was also able to see the marvellous pallione by Guido Reni, who painted the patron saints of the city with the Madonna of the Rosary. Then on November 29, celebrated and respected, she left the learned and cheerful city of Bologna — and she left to it and to the legate the burden of paying the hundreds of thousands of scudi that her visit and stay cost them.
Continuing her triumphal journey, we will say that she then visited Faenza, Forlì, Cesena and Rimini. She arrived there on December 2 and was extraordinarily celebrated by the magistrates and the population. Trophies and the most allegorical dances — everything had been imagined to entertain her.
Present at the Cattolica was the Nice-born Monsignor Giuseppe Lascaris, nephew of the Grand Master of the Order of Malta, vice-legate of Urbino, who appeared with a company led by Count Alfonso Santinelli, from Pesaro. However, one should not believe that all those gentlemen were moved by the mere whim of showing off their clothes and their wealth, or by the mere pleasure of petting that foreigner. For, if at all times many are accustomed to grazing on idle grass, many others know how to run after solid ground.
Among these was the family from Pesaro of the said Santinelli, who, recognising the limping foot of that northern star, knew quite well how to attract her attention and dazzle her imagination. He and his brother then showed off in many splendid parties and entertainments, and the brothers, the Counts Francesco Maria and Ludovico, also of the Santinelli, dancing a gagliarda with great skill, succeeded in insinuating themselves into Kristina's good graces, so that she began to show signs of appreciation, inviting those brothers to take off their cloaks and swords and repeat the dance so that she would thus observe better. And after the ball the cardinal-legate presented Kristina with a printed book containing various poems composed by that Count Francesco Maria.
The Queen then went to Sinigallia. The aforementioned brothers improvised a ridiculous comedy, which was imagined that same evening, and then dancing and hopping on horses finished by impacting Kristina, who from that moment wanted them in her service. That, if as far as their nobility was concerned, there was nothing to say, since the Santinellis belonged to the most ancient families of Pesaro, already honoured by the Orders of Saint Michael of France and Malta, we will not have a very good opinion of their nature. In any case, they were honoured by her high protection, which they then used and abused not a little, as we will have to mention in the course of this work.
Then, through Fano and Ancona, the Queen arrived at the famous sanctuary of Loreto, where all writers agree that Kristina had shown signs of obsequious devotion and meditation, to the point that, as soon as she had seen the towers from a distance, she wanted to dismount from her carriage, climb up on foot and refuse the honour of the canopy. At the Sanctuary she took Communion for the first time in public; and to the image of the Virgin she made a generous offering of the crown and the scepter, of that regal crown, described as rubinis splendida [splendid rubies], containing in fact one hundred and sixty-eight diamonds and one hundred and sixty precious pearls.
After Loreto she also wanted to visit Assisi, the birthplace and tomb of him who
"was not yet very far from the garden
when he began to make the earth feel
some comfort of his great virtue";
[Dante, Paradiso, song XI, verses 55-57.]
as was well known, since our classics were also familiar to her.
Above: Kristina.
Notes: powder of Cyprus = face powder.
neckerchief = cravat.
giambellotto (ciambellotto) = cammellotto.
camlet = a fine fabric made from wool (originally camel wool, but later goat wool) and silk.
The Collegio di Spagna (Royal Spanish College) is a college for Spanish students at the University of Bologna in Italy which has been functioning since the 14th century. It has been under the Royal patronage of the Spanish Crown since 1488, as authorised by Pope Innocent VIII. It was originally founded by Cardinal Gil Álvarez Carrillo de Albornoz (1310-1367) in 1364.
Guido Reni (1575-1642) was an Italian Baroque painter active in Rome, Naples and his native Bologna. He painted primarily religious works, but also mythological and allegorical subjects.
gagliarda = galliard, a lively dance popular in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries.
