The account:
IX.
Della sua gran virtude alcun conforto»;
[DANTE, Paradiso, c. XI, v. 55-57.]
English translation (my own):
IX. — Let us now continue the Queen's triumphal journey. After having stopped for eight days at Innsbruck, by way of Trento, where she was splendidly welcomed by that Prince-Bishop, she set out towards Veneto, without, however, visiting the Queen of the Adriatic, whom, although it had some resemblance to Stockholm, she was unable to see for the reasons given above. Only at Dolo had the Venetian Senate sent envoys to compliment her and serve her fish from Lake Garda, but, excusing her state of health, advised her to continue her journey.
Passing then to Verona, when she reached Revere, she also received special honours from the Gonzagas; and on November 21 she reached the frontier of the Ecclesiastical State. There three of the four papal legates presented themselves to her: Annibale Bentivoglio, Archbishop of Thebes, Luca Torrigiani, Archbishop of Ravenna, and Alessandro Cesarini, Governor of Rimini, the aforementioned, who offered her a carriage, a litter and a chair at every opportunity for the remainder of the journey. But from Mellara to Stellata she sailed on the Po on a beautiful bucintoro.
The vice-legate of Ferrara was there with the company of guards, lances, cuirasses and carabins, under the command of Don Innocenzo Conti, of the Dukes of Poli, general master of the camp of the Church, who had a select company of cavalry, led by the Marquis Carlo Teodoli. The Queen crossed the Po at Mirabello, a boundary dividing the Ferrarese from the Bolognese; and there she was complimented on behalf of the cardinal-legate of Bologna, Girolamo Lomellini, and by the vice-legate.
On the 26th, Cardinal-Legate Lomellini found himself in Bologna with a veritable army of prelates and gentlemen, armed and on horseback.
The honours were more than common, and those who wish to have a full account of them can consult with satisfaction the writing that gives us a detailed description. It will suffice to note briefly that Kristina was met by the standard-bearer, Count Gian Niccolò Tanari, at Porta Galliera, where the banners of the Colleges, the high-ranking City Officials and the Tribunes were hoisted.
And from there, after his harangue and the Queen's response, the triumphal march proceeded amid the sound of artillery fire, in which all the authorities took part, accompanying the Queen to the Cathedral and then to the public palazzo, where, on the threshold of the wide staircase, she was received by the legate, who had preceded her after the first meeting.
Arriving in the Farnese Hall, she saw one hundred and twenty ladies who, dressed with all elegance and a wealth of jewels, revered her. The Queen was lodged in the quarters designated for princes in transit at the expense of the Apostolic Chamber; and the procession, which numbered about two hundred people, was arranged throughout the city.
That evening, after splendid fireworks, a sumptuous ball was given in the Ercole Hall, at which, as usual, Kristina appeared bizarrely dressed, with a blond, curly wig on her head, smeared with pomade and sprinkled with powder of Cyprus, and a neckerchief of Genoese stitch with a ribbon the colour of fire around her neck. She then wore a short jacket of camlet of the same colour, trimmed with silver and gold, and had on a grey skirt embroidered with gold and silver lace.
The next day there were visits from the primary authorities, with all the official compliments that are described in detail in the aforementioned pamphlet. On the 27th the Queen visited San Luca on the Monte della Guardia, to whom she left as a gift a pearl necklace estimated to be worth 12,000 lire, according to Ghirelli, but with doubts from Malagola, who instead recalls the visits made by Kristina to San Michele in Bosco and to Santa Caterina, which followed on the 28th, and after which she wanted to go to the study of the illustrious writer Ulisse Adrovandi, who offered her his works in twelve volumes richly bound in crimson satin.
On that same day there was a sumptuous public luncheon, at which Kristina sat at the head of the table under a canopy; and the ladies were admitted, using the mask granted to them to make the appearance of the city more festive for the entire time of the Queen's stay in Bologna.
Towards the evening of the same day, Kristina went to the Collegio di Spagna, founded by Cardinal Egidio Albornoz, admiring that library rich in precious codices and very rare prints. Towards three in the morning she had much to enjoy a splendid joust, in which the principal knights of Bologna fought, and which was given in the theater specially built in the rooms of the Palazzo di Governo, which had the shape of a large ship, whose prow reached the facade of the Banchi above the fish ponds, and with its stern the musicians' railing. And, as a sign of admiration to the squads who, at the end of the spectacle, formed a half circle, had revered her, she shouted twice in a loud voice: "Evviva Bologna!" — "Long live Bologna!"
That same evening she was also able to see the marvellous pallione by Guido Reni, who painted the patron saints of the city with the Madonna of the Rosary. Then on November 29, celebrated and respected, she left the learned and cheerful city of Bologna — and she left to it and to the legate the burden of paying the hundreds of thousands of scudi that her visit and stay cost them.
Continuing her triumphal journey, we will say that she then visited Faenza, Forlì, Cesena and Rimini. She arrived there on December 2 and was extraordinarily celebrated by the magistrates and the population. Trophies and the most allegorical dances — everything had been imagined to entertain her.
Present at the Cattolica was the Nice-born Monsignor Giuseppe Lascaris, nephew of the Grand Master of the Order of Malta, vice-legate of Urbino, who appeared with a company led by Count Alfonso Santinelli, from Pesaro. However, one should not believe that all those gentlemen were moved by the mere whim of showing off their clothes and their wealth, or by the mere pleasure of petting that foreigner. For, if at all times many are accustomed to grazing on idle grass, many others know how to run after solid ground.
Among these was the family from Pesaro of the said Santinelli, who, recognising the limping foot of that northern star, knew quite well how to attract her attention and dazzle her imagination. He and his brother then showed off in many splendid parties and entertainments, and the brothers, the Counts Francesco Maria and Ludovico, also of the Santinelli, dancing a gagliarda with great skill, succeeded in insinuating themselves into Kristina's good graces, so that she began to show signs of appreciation, inviting those brothers to take off their cloaks and swords and repeat the dance so that she would thus observe better. And after the ball the cardinal-legate presented Kristina with a printed book containing various poems composed by that Count Francesco Maria.
The Queen then went to Sinigallia. The aforementioned brothers improvised a ridiculous comedy, which was imagined that same evening, and then dancing and hopping on horses finished by impacting Kristina, who from that moment wanted them in her service. That, if as far as their nobility was concerned, there was nothing to say, since the Santinellis belonged to the most ancient families of Pesaro, already honoured by the Orders of Saint Michael of France and Malta, we will not have a very good opinion of their nature. In any case, they were honoured by her high protection, which they then used and abused not a little, as we will have to mention in the course of this work.
Then, through Fano and Ancona, the Queen arrived at the famous sanctuary of Loreto, where all writers agree that Kristina had shown signs of obsequious devotion and meditation, to the point that, as soon as she had seen the towers from a distance, she wanted to dismount from her carriage, climb up on foot and refuse the honour of the canopy. At the Sanctuary she took Communion for the first time in public; and to the image of the Virgin she made a generous offering of the crown and the scepter, of that regal crown, described as rubinis splendida [splendid rubies], containing in fact one hundred and sixty-eight diamonds and one hundred and sixty precious pearls.
After Loreto she also wanted to visit Assisi, the birthplace and tomb of him who
"was not yet very far from the garden
when he began to make the earth feel
some comfort of his great virtue";
[Dante, Paradiso, song XI, verses 55-57.]
as was well known, since our classics were also familiar to her.
Above: Kristina.
Notes: powder of Cyprus = face powder.
neckerchief = cravat.
giambellotto (ciambellotto) = cammellotto.
camlet = a fine fabric made from wool (originally camel wool, but later goat wool) and silk.
The Collegio di Spagna (Royal Spanish College) is a college for Spanish students at the University of Bologna in Italy which has been functioning since the 14th century. It has been under the Royal patronage of the Spanish Crown since 1488, as authorised by Pope Innocent VIII. It was originally founded by Cardinal Gil Álvarez Carrillo de Albornoz (1310-1367) in 1364.
Guido Reni (1575-1642) was an Italian Baroque painter active in Rome, Naples and his native Bologna. He painted primarily religious works, but also mythological and allegorical subjects.
gagliarda = galliard, a lively dance popular in Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries.
