Potrebbono costì porre in cima:
"Beatissime Pater, in corpo.

Arckenholtz's transcript of the letter (in his French translation from Italian; I cannot tag it as such due to character limits in the tags):

Rome le 29. Octobre 1672.

English translation (my own):

Rome, October 29, 1672.
The Pope, having paid due attention to the great danger with which, by the powerful invasion of the Turk, not only Poland, but also all Christendom, is threatened, immediately on his part consented to succour this kingdom by all possible means; and in order not to neglect to give any of his pastoral care, he deemed it necessary to invite all the Christian Princes to contribute to it, because the enemy is formidable to all and common to the Christian name, and his domination does not tend to make subjects, but slaves.

That is why His Holiness wrote to the non-Catholic kings, and to the Muscovite, as was done in the past in such cases.

His Holiness has been pleased to send me also a brief for the King of Sweden, which I accompany with my letters.

The tenor of it is as you will see in the attached copy, and in the title there is no other difference, except that instead of the words of "Apostolicam Benedictionem", which the Pope causes to be put in writing to the Catholic Kings, we read in this brief "Lumen Divinæ Gratiæ", following the style of the court of Rome when it writes to the Kings of England, and to other heretical kings. I warn you, and if people take offense at the court where you are to receive a brief from the Pope (which I do not believe), they must know that it is in no way detrimental to religion that they profess, and that there are several other examples of it; and if the King of Sweden wishes to continue to be a Christian, he cannot make the least difficulty of it, because the Pope considers him here only in the sense of a Christian King. The step taken by His Holiness towards the King in writing to him without any consideration is, moreover, much more considerable than that which the King will take in replying to the Pope; which by all the laws of civility and obligation he cannot fail to do.

When Süleyman, the very powerful King of the Turks, made peace with Charles V, the then Pope, Clement V was included in it, and the instrument of the convention said, that Süleyman, Emperor of the Turks, "recipit in Patrem sanctissimum Clementem Pontificem Maximum, et in Fratres, Carolum et Ferdinandum, etc.", so that you may show that even the Turks had no difficulty in dealing with the Pope on the required terms.

You will be able to avail yourself of all this according to the occurrences, to clarify those who will need it.

I am sending you, however, my two despatches for the King; one, which contains His Holiness' brief, enclosed in my accompanying letter; the other which contains my only letter, without the brief.

By means of the Governor General, or of whomever he judges you to consult, you will be able to discover in secret if the brief of the Pope will be well received and answered according to proper etiquette; and if so, you will present the despatch with the Pope's brief.

But if you cannot assure yourself that it will be well received or suitably answered, you will present to the King only my other letter, which makes no mention of the brief.

The heretical Kings of England wrote to the Pope like those of France, putting above: "Most Holy Father", and in the body of the letter "Your Holiness"; beginning the letter below and subscribing it, "Your very devout Charles," or the like. In Sweden, they will be able to put "Beatissime Pater" above; in the body "Sanctitas Vestra", or "Vestra Beatitudo", and below an equivalent politeness; and if the King did not want to put the word "Filius", he could do without it.

It will also be good if, in speaking of it, you make people consider what a scandal and what a stain it would be for this Crown, if it alone made it difficult to respond to the brief of the Pope in the time that Muscovite, England, and other heretical kings and princes would make none.

You may let anyone read this sheet, but do not give a copy to anyone.

You can show to whom it will be necessary, but without giving a copy, the underlined lines which I have wanted to distinguish here from the rest of the writing, but be careful not to let yourself be deceived, for, if these creatures do not want to deal with the Pope as they should, do not take the charge, and do not allow yourself to be seduced, because I absolutely do not want to contribute to making the Pope suffer any impoliteness; and make them understand that if the Pope were not who he is, we cannot deny that he was not a great monarch, whose state is so great and so powerful that a span of his land is worth more than all the dominion of Sweden.

B.

On pourrait mettre en haut: «Beatissime Pater, in corpo.

B.
The Pope, having learned from the great sign that the danger is so grave that, due to the powerful invasion of the Turks, it is imminent not only to Poland, but to all of Christendom, has immediately given his hand to help that kingdom with every possible means; and in order not to neglect any part of his pastoral care, he has deemed it necessary to invite all Christian princes to the same end, while the enemy is formidable to all and common to the Christian name and his dominion tends to make not subjects, but slaves. Therefore His Holiness writes to the kings who are not yet Catholic and to the Muscovite, as has been done on other occasions in similar cases.

It has pleased His Holiness to send me a brief also for the King of Sweden so that I may accompany it with my letters. The tenor of it is that which you will see in the attached copy, and in the title there is no other change except that in place of the words "apostolicam benedictionem", which are used with Catholic kings, there are the other words — "lumen divinæ gratiæ" —, as is the style always used with the heretical kings of England and with others; which I signify to you because there they have formalised the receipt of a brief from His Holiness (which I do not believe).

Know that this does not prejudice the religion they profess and that there is the example of many others, and that if the King of Sweden does not want to tire of being a Christian, he cannot have the slightest difficulty, because the Pope does not consider him in this case in any other capacity than that of a Christian king.

And the step that His Holiness takes towards the King, writing to him without any regard, is much more considerable than the one the King will take in replying to the Pope, which cannot be omitted by any law of civility and obligation.

When Suleiman, the Most Powerful King of the Turks, made peace with Charles V, the then Pope Clement VII was also included in it, and the instrument of the convention says that Suleiman, Emperor of the Turks, "recipit in Patrem Sanctissimum Clementem pontificem maximum, et Ferdinandam, etc."; so you will be able to show that even the Turks have had no difficulty in treating with the Pope in the due forms. You will be able to use all this as you need to enlighten those who need it on the matter.

I am sending you, in the meantime, two of my dispatches for the King, one containing the brief from His Holiness included in a letter of mine which accompanies it; the other containing a single letter of mine without the brief.

You will be able to find out very secretly through the governor general or whoever he deems fit to consult whether the Pope's brief will be well received and responded to with appropriate treatment, and, having received a good response, you will present the dispatch containing the brief.

But if you cannot ensure that this is well received and answered in due form, you will present to the King only my other letter, which makes no mention of the brief.

The heretical kings of England have written to the Pope like those of France by putting at the top: "Très Saint Père, in corpo. Votre Sainteté", beginning the letter lower down; and signing at the bottom: "votre très dévote fils Charles", or something similar.

They could put at the top: "Beatissime Pater, in corpo. Sanctitas Vestra" or "Vestra Beatitudo", and below it an equivalent courtesy, and if the King does not want to put the word "filius", he can leave it.

And if necessary, you should also consider what a scandal and a mark of this Crown it would be if, on this occasion, the papal briefs were received from Muscovy, from England and from other heretical kings and princes, if there were difficulties there alone.

Use the contents of this sheet with anyone you need, but without giving a copy of it to anyone, etc.

You may show all these [...] papers, without giving copies, to whoever needs them, because I have taken them out on purpose to distinguish them from the rest for this purpose, and be careful not to go astray, because those beasts do not want to treat with the Pope as they should.

Do not take [...], nor let yourself be deceived, because I absolutely do not want to have any part in making the Pope receive bad credence, and make copies so that the Pope, even if you were not who he is, cannot be denied that he is a great monarch whose State is so beautiful and powerful that a handspan of his land is worth more than the entire dominion of Sweden.

— "This copy of the Pope's brief has not been found in the collections received from Rome, and it will be noted later that it was handed over to the Pope's datery, apparently without having been unsealed in Sweden."

I. p. 162. 1606. Tom. I. p. 87. & ad ann. 1608. Tom. —

"I will add here to what I have said elsewhere (Mémoires de Christine, volume 2, page 152, note.) of the politeness of King Karl IX of Sweden, writing to the Pope, that he only gave him the title of 'Sanctissime Romanæ Ecclesiæ Pontifex & Pater', in 1599, as he still considered himself a subject of King Sigismund, his nephew.

But, according to what Chancellor Oxenstierna said, two or three months later (Palmskiöld, Registers of the Senate ad annum 1636, page 450.) Duke Karl changed his style in a later letter to the Pope and called him 'Reverendissimum et Potentissimum Romanæ Ecclesiæ Pontificem Maximum', and in the context 'Reverentium tuam'.

I doubt very much that Kristina, in the fervour in which she was on this subject, would have been content with this politeness if it had been remembered in the chancellery of Sweden. For, as for what she cites as an example, the politenesses shown to the Pope by Kings James I and Charles I of England, the thing is proven and noted in the Historical Collections of Rushworth (Volume 1, page 162, etc.): where the Pope is called 'Most Holy Father' and 'Your Holiness', the King signing himself 'Beatitudinis Vestræ obsequentissimus Filius'.

But this is not the finest period in the life of these princes.

However, as we are on this subject, I will note here that in the Registers of the Senate of Sweden (Ad annum 1606, volume 1, page 87, and ad annum 1608, volume 2, page 125.), we find in what manner the ambassadors of Persia, arrived in Stockholm, had to be received and treated. It is said in another place (l. c., ad annum 1678, page 121.) that King Karl IX replied to the King of Persia in the Russian language, and addressed him informally 'secundum genium ejus linguæ'; but that King Karl XI wrote to him in the same year 1678 in Latin and gave him the epithet of 'Your Majesty', just as he did to the Turkish Emperor."

— "It must be admitted that Kristina sometimes allowed herself to be carried away by her passions and her ardour and verified what Terrence said, that when women 'volunt, vehementer volunt'. How many useless and poorly cultivated plots of land does one see in the Ecclesiastical States, and how many beautiful and very well-cultivated regions does one not encounter in Sweden? In this regard all countries are quite similar. The superfluity of one makes up for the lack of another."

Arckenholtz's transcript of the letter (in his French translation from Italian):

Rome le 29. Octobre 1672.

English translation (my own):

Rome, October 29, 1672.
It would offend the high prudence of the King of Sweden and his wise Council to want to make efforts to show what convenience and even necessity it is to help Poland against the arms of the Turk; because the present danger of all Christendom is equally common to the Kingdom of Sweden, and the Turk, once he is master of Poland, would increase so much in power, that it could be said with truth that not only all Europe would remain at his discretion, but also that the Crown of Sweden would become his neighbour in Pomerania, Livonia and elsewhere, which means that Sweden, when the Turk wishes it, will be stripped of all its conquests.

Moreover, this enemy possessing once Poland, the conquest of Germany (in the present situation of Hungary) and consequently the absolute domination of the Baltic Sea, would become very easy for him in a short time. The Muscovite then could not resist him; on the contrary, when the Turk wanted it alone, it would be easy to attack that one and to invade Sweden itself, while occupied by Denmark, it would see itself separated from the rest of the world, so that it would not could avoid being subject or dependent on the Turk.

These designs must not appear exorbitant, the Turk at the present time has three hundred thousand combatants in Poland, and if he were to conquer this kingdom, he could still put as many people in the field, in case of need.

It is well known that Sweden has considered it an advantage that Poland should be governed as a Republic, because thereby she is less disposed to work to the detriment of Sweden, by the delays so common to republics in seizing favourable occasions to resolve and set in motion to make conquests to the disadvantage of others.

What would it be, then, if the power of Poland not only were united and depended on a single chief with despotic power, who made every subject a slave; but again, if it were joined to the vast Ottoman forces, which have no limits, which, surmounting the levees of Poland, would no longer recognise any limits, but would inundate all Europe like an overflow which nothing can resist?

In any event, a lesser inconvenience will always be preferred to a greater one, and it will be considered wiser, and even more necessary, to fight the Turk rather from afar than in Pomerania or Livonia; for by smaller forces of Sweden, united with others, its states will be better defended in Poland than in Sweden itself.

Nor would it be impossible that for an enterprise so holy and so useful to Sweden, it could obtain some help in foreign money, from which it could defend itself from afar by gold and by the troops of others, by also putting something of its own against the danger which threatens it, and against which there will be hardly any worthwhile defense, being made too closely, because it is certain that the Poles seconded by the Swedes will defend Sweden in Poland; but Poland once lost, the states of Sweden could not be defended by these same Swedes alone; and the Poles subjugated by the Turk, instead of assisting Sweden, will help to subjugate it.

A.
It would be an offense to the supreme prudence of the King of Sweden and his wise Council to take the trouble to demonstrate how convenient and indeed necessary it is for him to succour Poland against the arms of the Turk.

For not only is the present danger to all Christendom common to the kingdom of Sweden, and the Turk, master of Poland, is growing so much in power that it can be said without exaggeration that all Europe remains at his discretion, but the Crown of Sweden would have its borders in Pomerania, Livonia, and elsewhere. Which is to say that Sweden would be stripped of all its conquests at his pleasure. Besides, it would be impossible that if he were to possess Poland, the conquest of Germany would not become very easy and short for him with the present dispositions of Hungary, and consequently the absolute dominion of the Baltic Sea, nor the could Muscovite resist him; indeed, if he wanted, it would be easy for him alone to invade and conquer Sweden itself, whereas, if he occupied Denmark, he would come to separate Sweden from the world in such a way that it could not avoid being a subject or tributary to him.

These measures must seem exorbitant when it concerns a power without measure, which today has in Poland 300,000 combatants and which by occupying that kingdom could draw from it as many for every need. And it is well known that Sweden has always considered it to its advantage that the power of Poland be in the hands of a republic, because this made it less disposed to use itself to the detriment of Sweden because of the tardiness and slowness that republics have in seizing and meeting opportunities to their advantage and in resolving and moving to conquer to the detriment of others.

Now, what would happen if the power of Poland were not only united and dependent on a single leader with such a despotic dominion that it enslaved every subject, but were also joined to the immeasurable vastness of the other Ottoman forces, which, overcoming the barrier of Poland, would no longer be capable of having any other, but their flood would inundate without restraint all of Europe? And in any case, even for the lesser need of this so grave and ever present one will consider it wiser, indeed a necessary advice, to fight with the Turks in Poland, than in Pomerania, or in Livonia, because few Swedish forces can with the ancestry of others defend the states of Sweden in Poland.

Nor would it be impossible that for an enterprise so holy and so useful to Sweden it could have some foreign money, so that it could defend itself from afar with the gold and men of others, putting in little of its own from that danger against which closer there will be no defense of value, for it is certain that the Poles, aided by the Swedes, will defend Sweden in Poland; but once Poland is lost, the states of Sweden will not be able to be defended even by the Swedes themselves, and the Poles, dominated by the Turks instead of helping Sweden, will help to subjugate it, etc.

You receive this by an extraordinary courier, and you will see by the contents the serious subject which gave rise to it. I cannot express to you the eagerness with which I entrust you with the execution of all my present orders; you will understand the importance of it after having examined its content, which you will become familiar with by considering it well, in order to act accordingly.

I send you herewith two of my loose-seal notes: one with my letter to the King, and a brief from His Holiness; the other with my letter alone also to the King, and separately two writings of four sheets signed A and B and the cipher sheet. If you are lucky enough to succeed in this negotiation, it will lead to my glory, and your fortune is made; and it is from this point of view that you must look at this matter. I know that you understand how important it is, that you apply all your attention and all your savoir-faire to it, to bring honour to me and to yourself. God bless you.

Octobre 1672. [Neg. di Pol.] p. 145.)..."

"It is here where the negotiation in Sweden of the Queen's own affairs was interrupted by another into which the Pope entered, and which regards Poland, then almost overwhelmed by the Turk. Here is the beautiful letter that Kristina wrote about it to the King of Sweden (October 29, 1672, [Negoziati di Polonia], page 145.)..."

The letter:

Christina Alessandra.

Kristina Alessandra.

English translation (my own):

My Lord Brother and Nephew,
I am instructed on behalf of His Holiness, our Most Holy Father the Pope, to accompany with this letter the brief which His Holiness writes to Your Majesty to beg you to help in these pressing necessities of the King and the Kingdom of Poland, who finds himself overwhelmed by the Ottoman power in ways you cannot ignore. His Holiness, in order to fulfill the duties of the sublime post to which Divine Providence has elevated him, did not want to fail to employ all the most prompt and effective means that his paternal applications could furnish him. To this end, having cast his eyes on all the Christian princes whom he asks for help, he has made a serious reflection on all the interests and considerations which render Your Majesty as worthy as any other to be sought and considered in this indispensable and pressing necessity. This is what has obliged His Holiness to pass over all the considerations which could reasonably prevent him from writing to you, leaving this testimony to posterity, that he has omitted nothing of all the extraordinary things which could require his paternal care.

I confess to Your Majesty that as soon as I was made aware of the design of His Holiness, I judged that it was too glorious to Your Majesty not to contribute to it by all that was desired of me, and I do not doubt that Your Majesty considers the proposal made to you with joy, and that the glory, whose inexplicable charm makes itself felt in the hearts that were born for it, will be tasted with all its sweetness in yours on this occasion. But besides that, I am persuaded that the foresight of such a wise Council as that of Sweden, and of its assembled Estates, will represent better than I to Your Majesty what are the political reasons which should induce you to give this help to oppose the most formidable power in the universe, which, after having subjugated and tamed Poland, will spare no one, and which, with this increase in power, will find itself in a position to subject all Europe to its superb laws if you do not promptly oppose your forces to this torrent of conquests.

I have ordered the Marquis del Monte, First Gentleman of my Chamber, and my Envoy Extraordinary, to Your Majesty to represent to you orally all that I have deemed necessary to be represented. I have no doubt that it will be favourably received and listened to, nor that Your Majesty will respond to the honour His Holiness does you, with the esteem, consideration and honesty to be guarantor for you to His Holiness, unable to conceive that a prince such as you could ever fail in it.

This is all I thought I had to say to you at this meeting, rejoicing for the rest with Your Majesty to see that, at the entrance of your majority, glory and fortune open up such a beautiful and noble career to you. I hope that you will make yourself worthy to reap the laurels which are presented to you by such worthy hands, and which can erase the glory and the brilliance of all the Kings our predecessors. I pray to God, my lord brother and nephew, that He bless you, and that He may preserve you for many years! Rome, October 29, 1672.
Your good Sister and Aunt
Kristina Alessandra.
