"The magazine reproduces how Christina receives Hercules' club by her father Gustav II Adolf, carried by Jupiter's eagle, while Fame engraves the book title on a podium. At the same time, the image can be said to be characteristic of the first of the two portraits of Christina created by Bourdon, probably in late autumn 1652."

The poem:

O Si l'Arte llegara!
Por medio del pincel mas excelente
Del animo a copiar las perfeciones,
Puesto que fuera tan confusamente,
Como las del semblante nos declara;
Quanto mas el retrato s'estimara.
CRISTINA de las Arcticas Regiones
La Cristiana Belona,
Diuina Musa, soberana Gracia,
Las mas rebeldes Almas aprisiona
Con amable violencia,
Sin que tenga lugar la resistencia,
En laços de dulcissima eficazia:
Yen ygual competencia
Sus ojos, sus discursos, sus acciones,
Triumfan de los mas libres coraçones.

English translation (my own):

Oh if art came!
By means of the most excellent brush
To copy the perfections of the spirit,
Because it was so confusedly,
As those of the countenance declare to us;
How much more the portrait will be esteemed.
Kristina of the Arctic regions
The Christian Belona,
Divine muse, sovereign grace,
The most rebellious souls imprison
With kind violence,
Without resistance taking place,
In sweetly effective ties:
And in equal competition
Her eyes, her speeches, her actions,
They triumph from the freest hearts.

L'honestà negli amori (The honesty in the loves) is a dramma per musica in three acts by a 19 year old Alessandro Scarlatti from 1679 to 1680 and dedicated to Kristina. Scarlatti would go on to become one of the greatest composers of the late Baroque age. The drama uses an Italian language libretto written by either Domenico Filippo Bernini or Domenico Filippo Contini. It premiered at the Teatro di Palazzo Bernini on February 3, 1680. The aria, Già il sole dal Gange, has since been recorded by famous Italian artists like Cecelia Bartoli, Luciano Pavarotti, etc., and become quite popular.

A lovely cover by Konstantinos Paliatsaras:

Enjoy!

Jean-Baptiste Bussotti.

Giovanni Battista Bussotti.

English translation (my own):

Sacred Royal Majesty,
The satisfaction I know Your Majesty had when some years ago I heard this composition read by the author makes me bold in the time which represents itself under your protection to consecrate it to your Royal Name, assuring myself that from it he must derive that increase of prestige that he has obtained in the scenes from the presence of Your Majesty now, which is exposed under the eyes of erudites; and with humble respect to Your Majesty, I deeply bow.
Your Majesty's
most humble, most devoted and most obsequious sir
