"A la réussite près de son projet pour l'introduction de sa Religion dans les Contrées du Nord, Christine partit assez contente de Hambourg, & arriva au mois de Juin à Rome, fort fêtée du Pape & de toutes les Personnes de distinction (Mém. de Christine T. II. p. 71.). Elle y reprit le fil de ses études, faisant toujours ses délices des Belles Lettres, ce qui ne la tenoit pas pourtant si attachée qu'elle n'eût aussi part aux grandes affaires du Cabinet.
A peine Christine y eut-elle été deux mois, que l'accident fâcheux arrivé au Duc de Crequi, Ambassadeur de France qui fut insulté par les Soldats Corses, lui fournit une nouvelle carriére de Négociation. J'ai trouvé nombre de Lettres & de déductions parmi les Manuscrits de Christine qui regardent cette affaire, & que j'ai reçues de Rome (V. les Miscellanea Politica, T. II des Msc. de Christine depuis la page 73 jusqu'à 177.): Mais comme la plupart se trouvent déjà insérées ailleurs (V. entre autres dans l'Histoire des Démêlés des Corses, par Regnier Desmarais, dans les Mém. de Christine T. II. p. 72 & dans l'Etat du Siége de Rome T. I. p. 181. &c.), & que j'ai assez parlé de cette affaire dans mes Mémoires de Christine par rapport à la part qu'y prit cette Reine, j'ajouterai seulement ici la Relation de la visite que le Pape, dans le fort de cette brouillerie avec Louis XIV. fit à la Reine: marque assurée qu'Alexandre VII. étoit content d'elle, & des soins qu'elle se donnoit pour appaiser le courroux du Roi de France. "Having succeeded in her project to introduce her religion into the northern lands, Kristina left Hamburg quite content, and she arrived in Rome in June, much to the acclaim of the Pope and all distinguished people (Mémoires de Christine, volume II, page 71.). There she resumed her studies, still delighting in les belles lettres, which, however, did not hold her so attached that she did not also take part in the important affairs of the Cabinet.
Kristina had barely been there two months when the unfortunate accident that befell the Duke de Créquy, the French ambassador, who was insulted by Corsican soldiers, provided her with a new career in negotiation. I have found a number of letters and deductions among Kristina's manuscripts which concern this affair, and which I have received from Rome (See the Miscellanea politica, volume II of Kristina's manuscripts, from pages 73 to 177.); but as most of them are already inserted elsewhere (See, among others, in L'Histoire des Démêlés des Corses, by Régnier-Desmarais, in Mémoires de Christine, volume II, page 72, and in L'État du Siège de Rome, volume I, page 181, etc.), and as I have spoken enough of this affair in my Mémoires de Christine in relation to the part that this Queen took in it, I will only add here the account of the visit that the Pope, in the height of this quarrel with Louis XIV, made to the Queen — a sure sign that Alexander VII was pleased with her, and with the care she took to appease the wrath of the King of France. zia. Roma 24. Marzo 1663.
Lunedi che fù li 19 del corrente Mons:re Seini Maestro di Camera di N. S:re si portò al Palazzo Riario ove presentemente habita la Regina di Suezia, e significò a sua Maestà, che il Pontefice nel di reguente passando per colà a fine di andare di stanza al Vaticano per assistare alle funzioni della Settimana santa, sarebbe flato da S. M:tà per dare una visita alla dilei habitazione, il che fù dalla Regina aggradito al più altro segno, e disse a Mons:re. «Unde hoc mihi quod Dominus meus veniat ad me? non sum digna quod intret sub tectum meum»: «pure quando sua santità habbia determinato di compartirmi con la sua presenza questo honore, io sono sempre in ogni tempo, e momento prontissima a riceverlo». Onde ordinò subito che in tutta diligenza, e celerità si lavorasse un'ampia Sedia con quella maggior ricchezza, & abbigliamento, che le angustie del tempo permetteano, come che dovea servire per S. S:tà, la quale hieri con Cavalcata più del Solito numerosa di Prelati, Principi, & altri Titolati, fra quali v'erano gli Ecc:mi Principi D. Mario, e D. Ag:o Chigi, scese dal Quirinale & andò per la strada della Longara, si trasferi in sedia al Palazzo Riario, entro al di cui andito poco lontano dalla Porta magiore trovossi la Regina, che con un riverente e profondo inchino, fermando sul Cuscino di villuto le ginocchia prestò il douvato ossequio al Papa, che smontanto di sedia s'inviò verso le scale, andandogli sempre del pari al lato sinistro la Regina. Arrivati ambedue in una gran Camera, nella quale v'era eretto un superbissimo Baldacchino, il Papa servito da Mons:re Seini si mise a sedere, e d'ordine di sua Santità il Marchese del Monte, Gentilhuomo di sua Maestà, recò alla Regina un scabello d'appoggio. Sintanto che durò il congresso, che continuò circa un' hora e meza, da Signori, e Paggi della Regina si diede da bevere a Principi Prelati, & altri ch'erano al Corteggio di sua Santità, & il Cardinal Chigi con altri, parte della Corte Pontificia, e parte di quella della Regina si tratenne in Anticamera. Terminato il Congresso il Papa, andando seco la Regina, diede una vista ad alcune Camere, ov'erano alcuni Arazzi ricchissimi, & alcune Pitture delle più cospicue, che levorono i Suedzesi dalla Galleria dell' Imperatore, quando diedero il sacco a Praga.
Nel partire il Pontefice, giunto alla sala poco distante dalle scale, si miso in sedia, la quale volle di sua mano chiudere la Regina, & era disposta di accompagnare sua Santità sino alla Porta del Palazzo, ma N. S:re non lo permise dicendole: «Madama resti», ed ella ripigliò: «Vostra Santità me lo comanda»; A che il Papa soggiunse: «Ci darà gusto»; Onde senz'altra replica profondamente s'inchinò alla Benedizzione datagli dal Papa, e si ritirò poi alle stanze, nelle quali fù a compire con S. E. il Card:e Chigi, il quale trattenutosi breve tempo, in diligenza segui in Carrozza il Papa, che con la Cavalcata s'era incaminato al Palazzo del Vaticano, ove pernotterà tutti questi giorni della Settimana Santa.

Ce fut Lundi, le 19 du courant, que Monseigneur Seini, Maître de la Chambre de notre Seigneur, se transporta au Palais Riario, qu'occupe présentement la Reine de Suède, & apprit à S. M. que le Pape, en passant un de ces jours par-là, pour aller au Vatican assister aux fonctions de la Semaine Sainte, lui viendroit rendre visite dans son Palais. Ce compliment plût extrémement à la Reine, qui dit au Maître de chambre: «Unde hoc mihi quod Dominus meus veniat ad me? Non sum digna quod intret sub tectum meum», «cependant, quand il plaîra à Sa Sainteté de me faire cet honneur, je serai toujours prête à la recevoir». Elle commanda aussitôt qu'on travaillât sur le champ & en toute diligence à un siége aussi richement décoré que le peu de tems le permettoit, pour servir à Sa Sainteté, qui, avec une suite plus nombreuse que de coutume de Prélats, de Princes & d'autres Personnes titrées, du nombre desquels étoient les illustres Princes D. Mario & D. Ag:o Chigi, sortit hier du Quirinal, & passant par la rue della Longara, se transporta en chaise à porteurs au Palais Riario. La Reine se trouva à l'entrée près de la grande porte, & après une profonde inclination, appuyant les genoux sur un coussin de velours, elle rendit ses respects au Pape, qui descendu de la chaise, alla vers l'escalier, la Reine marchant toujours d'un pas égal à la gauche du Pape. Pendant que dura la conversation (qui continua près d'une heure & demie) les Gentilshommes & les Pages de la Reine présentérent des rafraîchissemens aux Princes, aux Prélats, & aux autres qui étoient de la suite du Pape: & le Cardinal Chigi, avec les autres, partie de la Cour du Pontife, partie de celle de la Reine, s'entretenoient dans l'antichambre. Les discours finis, le Pape, accompagné de la Reine, alla voir quelques appartemens du Palais tendus de très-riches tapisseries, & ornés de magnifiques tableaux, que les Suédois avoient enlevés de la Gallerie de l'Empereur, quand ils emportérent la Ville de Prague.
Le Pape voulant partir, & étant venu à la sale près de l'escalier, se mit dans sa chaise, que la Reine vouloit fermer de sa main, disposée même à accompagner Sa Sainteté jusqu'à la porte du Palais, mais notre Seigneur ne le permit pas, lui disant, «Madame, restez»: & elle répondit, «Votre Sainteté me l'ordonne?» A quoi le Pape ajouta, «Vous me ferez plaisir». Après quoi, sans autre replique, elle s'inclina profondément à la bénédiction que le Pape lui donna, & se retira dans ses appartemens, où le Cardinal Chigi vint lui faire des complimens, & s'entretenant un peu avec S. The Pope's visit to the Queen of Sweden in Rome, March 24, 1663.
It was Monday, the 19th of this month, that Monsignor Seini, Master of the Chamber of our Lord, went to the Palazzo Riario, currently occupied by the Queen of Sweden, and informed Her Majesty that the Pope, passing one of these days there to go to the Vatican to attend the Holy Week functions, he came to visit her Palace. This compliment would greatly please the Queen, who said to the Master of the Chamber: "Unde hoc mihi quod Dominus meus veniat ad me? Non sum digna quod intret sub tectum meum", — in translation: "Whenever it pleases His Holiness to do me this honour, I shall always be ready to receive it."
She immediately ordered that they should work on the spot and with all diligence at a seat as richly decorated as time permitted to serve His Holiness, who, with a more numerous retinue than usual of prelates, princes and other titled persons, among whom were the illustrious princes Don Mario and Don Augusto Chigi, left the Quirinal yesterday, and passing through the Strada della Lungara, transported themselves in chairs to the Palazzo Riario. The Queen found herself at the entrance near the great door, and after bowing deeply, resting her knees on a velvet cushion, she paid her respects to the Pope, who dismounted from the chair, went to the staircase, the Queen still walking with an equal step to the left of the Pope. Both arrived in a large apartment where a superb canopy had been placed. The Pope, served by Monsignor Seini, sat down, and by order of His Serenity the Marquis del Monte, Her Majesty's Gentleman, presented the Queen with an armchair. While the conversation lasted (which continued for nearly an hour and a half), the gentlemen and the Queen's pages presented refreshments to the princes, prelates, and others who followed the Pope; and Cardinal Chigi, with the others, part of the Court of the Pontiff, part of that of the Queen, conversed in the antechamber. The conversations finished, the Pope, accompanied by the Queen, went to see some apartments of the Palazzo hung with very rich tapestries, and adorned with magnificent paintings, which the Swedes had removed from the Emperor's Gallery when they carried off the city of Prague.
The Pope, wanting to leave, and having come to the room near the stairs, sat down in his chair, which the Queen wanted to close with her hand, willing even to accompany His Holiness to the gate of the Palazzo, but our Lord would not allow it, telling her, "Madame, you stay", and she replied: "Your Holiness orders me to do it?" To which the Pope added, "You will do me the pleasure of it." After which, without further reply, she bowed deeply to the blessing which the Pope gave her and withdrew to her apartments, where Cardinal Chigi came to pay her compliments, and, conversing a little with Her Majesty, in a coach he diligently followed the Pope, who was on his way with his retinue to the Vatican Palace, where he would stay throughout Holy Week.

Le lundi, qui fut le 19 du courant, Monseigneur Seini, maître de chambre de Notre Seigneur, se rendit au palais Riario, où réside présentement la reine de Suède, et informa Sa Majesté que le pontife, de passage le lendemain pour se rendre au Vatican afin d'assister aux offices de la Semaine Sainte, serait invité par Sa Majesté à visiter sa résidence. La reine apprécia grandement cette visite, qui dit à Monseigneur:
«Unde hoc mihi quod Dominus meus veniat ad me ? Non sum digna quod intret sub tectum meum. [D'où me vient que mon Seigneur vienne à moi? Måndagen, som var den 19 denna månad, besökte monsignor Seini, Vår Herres kammarherre, palatset Riario, där Sveriges drottning för närvarande bor, och informerade Hennes Majestät om att påven, som passerade där dagen därpå på väg till Vatikanen för att delta i gudstjänster under Stilla veckan, skulle bli ombedd av Hennes Majestät att besöka hennes residens. Detta uppskattades mycket av drottningen, som sade till monsignor:

On Monday, the 19th of this month, Monsignor Seini, Our Lord's chamberlain, went to the Palazzo Riario, where the Queen of Sweden currently resides, and informed Her Majesty that the Pontiff, passing through there the following day on his way to the Vatican to attend Holy Week services, would be asked by Her Majesty to visit her residence. This was greatly appreciated by the Queen, who said to Monsignor:
"Unde hoc mihi quod Dominus meus veniat ad me? Non sum digna quod intret sub tectum meum. [Whence is this to me that my Lord should come to me? I am not worthy that he should enter under my roof.] However, if His Holiness has determined to grant me this honour with his presence, I am always ready to receive him at any time and any moment."
He immediately ordered that a large chair be made with all diligence and celerity, with the greatest richness and adornment that the constraints of the time permitted, as it was to be used for His Holiness, who yesterday, with a more numerous cavalcade than usual of prelates, princes and other titled persons, among whom were the Most Excellent Princes Don Mario and Don Agostino Chigi, came down from the Quirinale and went along the Lungara road, moved in a chair to the Palazzo Riario, within whose passage, not far from the main door, where the Queen was, who, with a reverent and profound bow, resting her knees on the velvet cushion, paid due homage to the Pope, who, dismounting from his chair, went towards the stairs, with the Queen still walking beside him on his left.
When they both arrived in a large chamber, in which a most superb baldaquin had been erected, the Pope, served by Monsignor Seini, sat down; and, by order of His Holiness, the Marquis del Monte, Her Majesty's gentleman, brought the Queen a footstool. While the congress lasted, which continued about an hour and a half, the Queen's lords and pageboys served refreshments to the princes, prelates and others in His Holiness's cortège. Cardinal Chigi, along with others from the papal court and that of the Queen, were entertained in the antechamber.
After the congress, the Pope, with the Queen going with him, gave a visit to several chambers containing some very rich tapestries and some of the most remarkable paintings that the Swedes had taken away from the Emperor's gallery when they sacked Prague.
As the Pope left, having reached the hall not far from the stairs, he sat down on a chair, which he wanted to enclose with his own hand the Queen, and she was ready to accompany His Holiness to the palace door, but Our Lord did not allow it, saying to her: "Madama, stay."
And she replied: "Your Holiness commands me it?"
To which the Pope added: "It will give Us pleasure."
Therefore, without further reply, she bowed profoundly at the Pope's benediction and then retired to her rooms, where she was to spend the night with His Eminence Cardinal Chigi, who, after staying a short time, diligently followed the Pope in his carriage, who had set out with the cavalcade for the Vatican Palace, where he will spend the nights during these days of Holy Week.
