"C'est de cette Ambassade de Gualdo que le Sr. Basnage & d'autres (Mém. de Christine l. c. not.) ont pris occasion de soupçonner, comme s'il y entroit de l'artifice dans cette Négociation même de la part de la Reine. J'avois déjà détruit les raisonnemens de Basnage comme mal fondés; mais par cette Lettre, aussi-bien que par une autre qu'elle écrivit en ce tems-là à la République de Venise, ces soupçons se détruisent fonciérement; parce qu'on voit par ces deux Lettres que cette affaire ne se faisoit pas à l'insu du Sénat Vénitien, & qu'elle souhaitoit même que l'argent que les Princes Chrétiens vouloient contribuer pour soutenir Venise contre le Turc, fût remis en droiture à la République. Nous verrons ci-après que cette Négociation de Christine donna occasion à une autre, qui se fit dix ou douze ans après, par son entremise, entre la Cour de Suéde & celle du Pape. Voici la Lettre de la Reine au Doge de Venise (Lettere a Diversi p. 134. li 2. Nov. 1661.)."
"It is from this embassy of Gualdo that Monsieur Basnage and others (Mémoires de Christine, l. c., note.) have taken occasion to suspect, as if there was artifice in this very negotiation on the part of the Queen. I had already destroyed Basnage's reasoning as unfounded; but by this letter, as well as by another that she wrote at that time to the Republic of Venice, these suspicions are fundamentally destroyed; because we see by these two letters that this affair was not done without the knowledge of the Venetian Senate, and that she even wished that the money that the Christian princes wanted to contribute to support Venice against the Turk, be given in due course to the Republic. We will see below that this negotiation of Kristina's gave rise to another, which took place ten or twelve years later, through her intermediary, between the court of Sweden and that of the Pope. Here is the letter from the Queen to the Doge of Venice (Lettere a diversi, page 134, November 2, 1661.)."
