"La Reine[,] se trouvant frustrée de tous côtés de l'espérance qu'elle avoit conçue de réussir dans une affaire de cette importance, commençoit à penser sérieusement à son retour à Rome. Ce fut dans cette intention qu'elle écrivit la Lettre suivante au Pape (Lettere a Diversi le 8. Febr. l. c. p. 147.)...
Le même jour Christine écrivit au Cardinal Chigi (Neveu du Pape,) une Lettre sur le même sujet, en lui disant (L. 8. Fevr. l. c. p. 148.)...
Voilà quelle fut l'issue de cette Négociation de Christine, en faveur de la Religion Catholique-Romaine dans les Contrées du Nord. La Reine faisant fonds sur l'assistance des plus considérables Princes Catholiques, se flatta d'en venir à bout, moyennant leurs Lettres de recommandation au Roi de Dannemarc & à la Ville de Hambourg. La Cour de France s'y prêta la premiére, mais sans s'expliquer en termes aussi pressans que Christine le souhaitoit. L'Empereur & les Rois d'Espagne & de Pologne n'y vouloient mordre en rien, soit par jalousie contre la France, ou peut-être contre Christine même, pour n'être redevable du rétablissement de leur Religion dans ces Quartiers-là qu'à eux mêmes, y joint les difficultés qui s'y présentoient, & qui n'étoient pas si faciles à vaincre. Le passage de Christine au Catholicisme avoit donné occasion à la Suéde & au Dannemarc de publier de sévéres Ordonnances contre l'exercice & l'introduction de cette Religion dans ces Royaumes. Si les susdites Puissances eussen travaillé ouvertement comma la Reine le desiroit, on auroit pu leur reprocher qu'elles se mêloient des affaires intérieures & domestiques des autres Etats, & que si leur demande étoit jugée juste, elles devoient réciproquement admettre le libre exercice de la Religion Protestante dans leurs Pays: & l'on pouvoit s'assurer, que ni l'Empereur, ni le Roi d'Espagne, n'auroient jamais acheté l'établissement de la leur à ce prix.
Christine ayant réfléchi plus mûrement sur ces incidens, fit très-sagement de n'y plus insister. Aussi reconnut-elle sérieusement qu'elle étoit trop foible & trop impuissante pour venir à bout de cette tâche. Elle justifia par-là ce que l'illustre Nani disoit quelques années après à son sujet (V. Mém. de Christine T. I. p. 532.); 'qu'une Reine sans Etats étoit comme une Divinité sans Temple, à laquelle on cesse bientôt d'offrir des adorations & des sacrifices'.
Elle en fit l'épreuve personnellement, étant deux ans auparavant en Suède. Elle fit tout ce qu'elle put pour y avoir l'exercice libre de sa nouvelle Religion pour elle & sa suite; agissant sans-doute en cela conformément aux mesures concertées avec la Cour de Rome. Mais les Etats de Suède n'y voulant pas entendre, elle s'en retourna le cœur plein de dépit, de chagrin, & du desir de se venger de l'affront qu'elle croyoit avoir reçu. De retour à Hambourg, elle se mit à travailler au libre exercice de sa Religion dans cette Ville, & en Dannemarc. Elle goûtoit apparemment d'avance la satisfaction d'y réussir en dépit de la Suède. Il s'y joignoit un autre motif. C'est qu'elle vouloit se rendre par-là agréable au Pape, & généralement à tous les Etats & à toutes les Cours Catholiques, qui ne pouvoient pas se dispenser de lui en savoir gré. Christine aura aussi jugé leur appui d'autant plus nécessaire pour son intérêt personel. Elle venoit d'avoir une grande dispute avec les Etats de Suède (V. Mém. de Christine T. II. p. 47. 49. & 118. 119.) au sujet du Mémoire qu'elle leur avoit présenté, & où elle prétendoit qu'en cas de mort du jeune Roi Charles XI. elle pouvoit reprendre la Couronne de Suède. Cette proposition ayant fort déplû aux Etats, elle avoit lieu de craindre qu'on ne lui retranchât sa pension viagére. Il étoit donc de la prudence de se concilier la bienveillance des Cours Catholiques, pour se faire regarder comme Martyr de sa Religion, qui méritoit leurs libéralités, pour qu'elle ne manquât pas du nécessaire. Par bonheur Christine trouva, à la Diette suivante, les Etats de Suède plus généreux à son égard, qu'elle n'osoit peut-être l'espérer elle-même. Non seulement la pension stipulée lui fut confirmée de-nouveau, mais les Etats lui laissérent le choix de se la faire payer des revenus du Duché de Bréme ou de celui de Poméranie."
"The Queen, finding herself frustrated on all sides of the hope she had conceived of succeeding in an affair of this importance, began to think seriously of her return to Rome. It was with this intention that she wrote the following letter to the Pope (Lettere a diversi, February 8, l. c., page 147.)...
The same day, Kristina wrote to Cardinal Chigi (the Pope's nephew) a letter on the same subject, telling him (February 8, l. c., page 148.)...
This was the outcome of this Kristina's negotiation in favour of the Roman Catholic religion in the countries of the North. The Queen, relying on the assistance of the most considerable Catholic princes, flattered herself that she would succeed in achieving it by means of their letters of recommendation to the King of Denmark and to the city of Hamburg. The court of France lent itself to it first, but without explaining itself in terms as pressing as Kristina wished. The Emperor and the Kings of Spain and Poland did not want to bite in any way, either out of jealousy against France, or perhaps against Kristina herself, for being indebted for the reestablishment of their religion in these quarters only to themselves, added to which the difficulties which presented themselves, and which were not so easy to overcome.
Kristina's passage to Catholicism had given occasion to Sweden and Denmark to publish severe ordinances against the exercise and introduction of this religion in these kingdoms. If the aforementioned powers had worked openly, as the Queen desired, one could have reproached them for interfering in the internal and domestic affairs of other States, and that if their request was judged just, they should reciprocally admit the free practice of the Protestant religion in their countries; and one could assure oneself that neither the Emperor nor the King of Spain would ever have bought the establishment of theirs at this price.
Kristina, having reflected more maturely on these incidents, very wisely decided not to insist on them any longer. She also seriously recognised that she was too weak and too powerless to complete this task. She thereby justified what the illustrious Nani said a few years later about her (See Mémoires de Christine, volume I, page 532.); 'that a queen without States was like a divinity without a temple, to whom one soon ceases to offer adoration and sacrifices'.
She personally experienced this, having been in Sweden two years earlier. She did everything she could to have the free exercise of her new religion for herself and her suite; acting in this, no doubt, in conformity with the measures concerted with the court of Rome. But, the Estates of Sweden not wanting to hear it, she returned with her heart full of spite, sorrow and the desire to avenge herself for the affront she believed she had received. Back in Hamburg, she began to work for the free exercise of her religion in that city and in Denmark. She apparently tasted in advance the satisfaction of succeeding in spite of Sweden.
There was another motive added to this. She wanted to make herself agreeable to the Pope, and generally to all the States and all the Catholic courts, who could not help but express their gratitude to her. Kristina will also have judged their support all the more necessary for her personal interest. She had just had a great dispute with the Estates of Sweden (See Mémoires de Christine, volume II, pages 47, 49 and 118, 119.) concerning the memorandum which she had presented to them, and in which she claimed that in the event of the death of the young King Karl XI. she could take back the crown of Sweden.
This proposition having greatly displeased the Estates, she had reason to fear that her life pension would be cut off. It was therefore prudent to conciliate the goodwill of the Catholic courts, to be regarded as a martyr of her religion, which deserved their liberalities, so that she would not lack the necessities. Fortunately, Kristina found, at the following Riksdag, the Estates of Sweden more generous towards her than she perhaps dared to hope for herself. Not only was the stipulated pension confirmed again, but the Estates gave her the choice of having it paid from the revenues of the Duchy of Bremen or that of Pomerania."

Cependant comme elles sont à present réglées au point que je puis m'en retourner, je ne saurois me dispenser d'apprendre à Votre Eminence en toute confidence, que je pense de me mettre en chemin au mois d'Avril prochain. J'aurois voulu de très-bon cœur rendre quelque service signalé dans ce Pays-ci en faveur de notre Religion, conformément à mes intentions, dont, aussi bien que des moyens procurés pour l'effectuer, Votre Eminence sera peut-être informée par M. le Cardinal Azzolini. Mais ma foiblesse, jointe à quelques obstacles (dont je me réserve de vous instruire plus particuliérement quand je serai chez vous) sont que je ne puis pas, dans un si court espace de tems, le perfectionner selon mes inclinations: & lequel, si je ne savois pas qu'il pût être poursuivi étant à Rome, également & avec plus d'avantage, je ne me resoudrois pas à m'éloigner d'ici, avant que tout cet ouvrage fût achevé. I thought that my absence from Rome would be only a few months, but my affairs in Sweden were in such a state that, to put them back in order, I had to stay longer in these quarters. However, as they are now settled to the point that I can turn around, I cannot dispense with telling Your Eminence in confidence that I am thinking of setting out on my way in April. I would have heartily wished to render some service signaled in this country in favour of our religion, in accordance with my intentions, of which, as well as of the means procured to carry it out, Your Eminence will perhaps be informed by Cardinal Azzolino. But my weakness, together with some obstacles (which I reserve to instruct you more particularly when I will be with you) are that I cannot, in such a short space of time, perfect it according to my inclinations, and which, if I did not know that he could be pursued while in Rome, and also with more advantage, I did not resolve myself to move away from here, before all this work was completed. It is in this consideration that I flatter myself that His Holiness will not judge that, because of my departure, there is some lack of will to employ me to such a glorious end, in the hope that I have that the affair will prosper and that my duty will spur me to work on it effectively anytime and anywhere. In the meantime, I hope that this letter will serve Your Eminence as proof of the special esteem that I have of your person and of your merit, and to invite you to provide me with occasions where I can indeed make appear to you the desire that I have to be useful to you; and, wishing you the most perfect prosperity, I remain, etc.

Cependant, me permettant de rentrer, je ne manque pas de signifier à Votre Éminence ma confiance particulière en vous signifiant que j'ai l'intention de m'y rendre en mois d'avril prochain, à moins que Sa Sainteté ne m'en ordonne autrement; je prie Votre Éminence de me l'insinuer afin que je puisse m'y régler en conséquence.

In the meantime, permitting myself to return, I do not fail to remonstrate to Your Eminence my particular confidence by signifying to you that I intend to undertake it next April month, unless His Holiness orders me otherwise; I beg Your Eminence to insinuate this to me so that I may regulate myself accordingly.
In this, while I truly would like to have worked something significant in the service of our religion in these parts, in accordance with my intention, of which Your Eminence, and of the means employed to carry it out, may have been informed by Monsignor Cardinal Azzolino, but my weakness, combined with certain obstacles of which I reserve for myself the right to give you more distinct notice when I am there, prevent me from conducting my intention to perfection in such a short time.
