Letter to Kristina from an unknown councilman on marriage, dated May 20/30 (Old Style), 1644

"... It seems that this Count [Magnus] was not the only one who wished that neither this marriage nor the Queen's resignation should take place. Many of the grandees ... appear to have been of the same sentiment, so that, after Kristina's death, the Crown would be given through an election where they could either safeguard their own interests or change the form of government into an aristocracy...

[(†) It appears, however, that there were grandees of the realm who did not think so. The letter in Swedish that one of the leading senators wrote to Kristina as early as 1644 regarding her marriage demonstrates this. One cannot say positively who wrote it. Perhaps it is from Chancellor Oxenstierna himself, wishing to sound out the Queen's thoughts regarding his son Erik, or — more likely — senator Bengt Skytte. However that may be, one has judged this letter worthy of appearing here in a French translation (It was communicated to me by the late Lord President Baron Gustaf Rålamb.)]" - Arckenholtz

"This interesting letter has, as far as I can recall, never been printed in its original language, that is, in Swedish; but in French and German it is found translated and included in the first part of Lord Court Councilor Arckenholtz's Mémoires de la reine Christine; which book has, as is well known, been published in both the latter languages. The said Lord Court Councilor says that he has not been able to ascertain who was the author of this letter, whether it was the Grand Chancellor Count Axel Oxenstierna himself or the councilman Bengt Skytte or some other of the councillors of that time." - Hesselberg

The letter:

Stormägtigste Drottning, Högborne Förstinna,
Allranådigste Fröken.
Eder Kongl.

Konungars samtycke, uti Konung Johans tid i Stockholm, i Konung Karls tid i Norrköping, och sidst i Konung Gustaf Adolfs, Ed. Kongl.

Kongl. Maj:t högnödigt at betänka, huru som Ed. Kongl. Kongl.

With modernised spelling:

French translation (by Arckenholtz):

Très-puissante & très-gracieuse Reine,

English translation (my own):

Most Powerful Queen, High-Born Princess,
Most Gracious Lady,
Your Majesty will well remember the common maxim, which says that "men were not born for themselves, but for the good of the Fatherland." This maxim, which deserves everyone's reflection to put it into practice, concerns sovereigns and those who govern all the more because it is through them that diverse happinesses and blessings from Heaven are spread over the subjects, when the state is governed in the fear of God, with reciprocal agreement, love and union, according to the laws and ordinances of the land. On the contrary, when this is neglected for various reasons, both on the part of those who govern, as well as that of the subjects, on the part of the first ones. When, by human weakness, it is not possible for them to learn all things by themselves, nor to examine them so closely alone, nor to provide a remedy, and on the part of servants and subjects in both states, when the ambition to attain the highest dignities, the passion to acquire more goods and authority, envy and jealousy, injustice and such vices take the upper hand in the ecclesiastical state and in the secular, then all this is usually followed by the curse of God, which causes misfortune to the sovereign and to the subjects, as Solomon says that "the crimes of the people produce revolutions in states."

The sovereign, to take precautions on this, must consider that it is not good for him to remain alone, but that he must obtain help according to the order of God, and according to what is established in well-regulated states of the consent of the people, because "the voice of the people is the voice of God", as the political authors say, in agreement with Holy Scripture.

It is in consequence of this, as well as to satisfy my very humble duty and the oath of fidelity which I have taken, that I cannot dispense with making known to Your Majesty what is meant and what is said in all the Estates of the Realm on the present situation of affairs in the Fatherland, and on their affection towards Your Majesty and the rule of the country, sentiments, which what will be deduced below will express more particularly.

We know that rulership, which is based on succession by birth, is valued both in the Bible and in its Writings of the Wise Men, which the author of the Instruction for Kings has similarly made sufficiently known. Our Fatherland has experienced the effects of both governments having had kings by election, and then kings by birth.

Those who, out of ambition and desire, preferred election to succession, had only the goal of finding an opportunity to overturn the established order of succession. But having committed perjury, they did not escape the chastisement and righteous judgments of God. However, this did not fail to cause much disturbance and bloodshed in the Fatherland.

To prevent such misfortunes, our ancestors, all the Estates of the Realm and ourselves, of which there are still some alive, have at various times rectified the Form of Government and the Order of Succession, as during the reign of King Johan in Stockholm, during that of Karl in Norrköping, and lastly, during the lifetime of King Gustav Adolf, Your Majesty's father, of glorious memory. This Order of Succession thus restored was not only continued by oath on our part, after having been extended to daughters and women and consequently to Your Majesty's person; but it was also ruled there as it would be proceeded to the marriage of this princess, so that there came from it the heirs, and the successors, and that one does not come to elect kings.

It is to these old statutes and to these laudable decrees that not only the Estates at the last Riksdag, but also now everyone in the city and in the countryside, as much those of the nobility in general, as those of the clergy, of the citizenry and peasants, want to stand firm, wishing nothing more ardently than to see Your Majesty accept and carry out as soon as possible the advice, the good ordinances and the foresight of your very illustrious ancestors, giving your subjects the consolation and the hope of seeing that the Fatherland will not be deprived, in any human event, of a hereditary successor; otherwise it is to be feared that the most powerful in the realm will come to dispute the reign, from which in the end would follow the taking of arms and the shedding of blood, as happened above, and likewise would certainly have happened upon the death of Your Majesty's father if Your Majesty had not previously been declared heir to the Crown.

In this regard, and as it has been said above, that "men are not born for themselves, but for the Fatherland", it is very important that Your Majesty considers by what means you can give back to your Fatherland the most essential service, and not only that you hasten your coronation, but that you also not delay entering into the praiseworthy state of marriage, so that the whole Fatherland in general, as also several particular persons who have been blessed with land and fiefs, may enjoy the hope of a quiet reign through the grace and blessing of Heaven. Your Majesty acquired an immortal name for yourself among all your Estates and all the inhabitants of the Realm, instead of the particular persons who have received royal blessings and donations and who will attribute them, as will their successors, not so much to the grace and liberality of Your Majesty than to their own industry and to their merit. Presumption could also give rise to the idea of aspiring to higher things if there were no heir to the Crown.

The Estates generally, and above all the poor and the less rich, would have all the more reason to complain that it would not have pleased Your Majesty to follow the advice and decrees of your very illustrious ancestors, and by postponing the execution too long, that you would thereby have made persons so powerful in the country that they would be in a position to divide the kingdom and to subjugate their fellow citizens. Nor should there be any doubt that they do, unless the order of hereditary succession to the Crown is strengthened, and supported by the grace of God and a Christian marriage of Your Majesty. It is thus that all the fellow citizens, by means of hereditary succession in a royal person, will gradually familiarise themselves with those who have become too powerful, and they will all live together in union and obedience, according to the laws and public ordinances, on which the late Kings and the Estates have sworn solemnly for themselves and their successors to to keep them inviolably, and they would not commit perjury towards God, in whose name they have sworn, and who would not fail to punish those who abused His name.

I wish that the Almighty will, by His Holy Spirit, enlighten and direct the thoughts and advice of Your Majesty, in this as in everything else, so that all turns to the glory of His holy name and to a long, happy and tranquil reign of Your Majesty and your presumptive heirs until the end of time!

English translation (my own; from the original Swedish):

Most Powerful Queen, High-Born Princess,
Most Gracious Lady,
Your Royal Majesty will most graciously remind yourself of the common proverb: "Men are not born for themselves, but for the good of their fatherland." This, which all people should consider and strive for, concerns all the more persons in authority and rulers as those from whom all happiness and God's blessing most eminently flow and come to their subjects whenever the government is led in the fear of the Most High Lord with mutual harmony, love and unity in accordance with law and statutes.

But on the contrary, when such things are neglected through all sorts of reasons that can occur by the subjects as well as the authorities — either from human weakness if a government cannot proceed with or do everything and be able to examine all things so carefully alone and bring about improvement, as well as among servants and subjects in higher and lower positions when desire for greater calling and honour, greed for money and greater power, mutual envy and malice, wrong judgements and other things arise in the Church of God and in the Fatherland, — then God's curse follows, with all sorts of misfortune both for subjects and for authorities.

As the wise man says, because of the sins of the people, many changes occur in the government; that while the authorities, on the other hand, may well provide for themselves, it is necessary to take into consideration why it is not good for man to be alone, but must have help, according to the order of God and the statutes of lawful rulers with the consent of the masses; "quia vox populi, vox Dei" ["for the voice of the people is the voice of God"], say the political writers, and it is not in opposition to the Holy Scripture.

I am therefore bound by my duty of fealty to remember and most submissively announce to Your Royal Majesty what is heard and spoken among all the estates about the current state of affairs in the Fatherland and their good intentions for Your Royal Majesty and for the government in the realm, as the following letter will more clearly show their opinion.

Now, both in God's law and in the writings and books of other wise and learned men, the government that consists of hereditary succession is highly praised, as the author of Konunga Styrilse quite testifies, which has also been proven well in our Fatherland in the times of both elective and hereditary kings. But ambition and envy have loved the election of rulers more and have gladly wanted to overthrow the Pact of Inheritance, which has been ill-received by those who have become traitorous (according to God's just judgement) and has caused much unrest and bloodshed in our Fatherland.

Therefore our ancestors, the Estates of the Realm, and we ourselves, who have still partly been living in different times, in the time of King Johan in Stockholm, in the time of King Karl at Norrköping, and most recently in the time of King Gustav Adolf, Your Royal Majesty's lord father, with the consent of former laudable kings, we have corrected, amended and extended the Form of Government and the Pact of Inheritance for the succession of females and hereditary ladies and thus for Your Royal Majesty; we have also described how the marriage of the hereditary ladies should be held, so that further heirs of their bodies and further successors could come to the government and so that no kings be elected.

I also understand that at the last Riksdag, as well as now at home in the country, the nobility, priests, Estates and peasants at home want to uphold these statutes and old, laudable resolutions; and they desire nothing higher than that Your Royal Majesty would let it please you to act upon the advice, good order and care of your highly laudable forefathers — the sooner, the better, — and to console your subjects and give them the good hope that in no human event should the Fatherland be left without a hereditary successor and then that the most powerful in the country should come to dispute the government among themselves and finally resort to sword and bloodshed, as has happened before — and which would certainly have happened upon the demise of Your Royal Majesty's lord father if Your Royal Majesty had not been declared heir to the kingdom.

Wherefore, and as here in the beginning it is said, "homines non sibi ipsis, sed patriæ nasci" ["men are born not for themselves, but for their fatherland"]; it is most necessary for Your Royal Majesty to consider how you can best serve your Fatherland for the good and not only hasten your royal coronation, but that you also not long delay the laudable state and celebration of your marriage, whereby the Fatherland in general (as well as in many private aspects) is granted lands and counties by Your Royal Majesty and so that it may have some joy and good hope of enjoying a tranquil reign, by God's grace and blessing. Your Royal Majesty will also thereby preserve an immortal and famous name from all the Estates and inhabitants of the Realm — if, however, otherwise private persons and your successors will hereafter perhaps not attribute the received benefits and royal donations to Your Royal Majesty's liberality and grace, but more to your own industry and merit; there could thereby be a greater courage in either of them to aspire to and strive for higher things if there were no heir to the crown again.

On the other hand, the general Estates (especially the poor and less wealthy ones) would have all the more to regret that it has not pleased Your Royal Majesty to follow the advice and statutes of your forefathers, but that you have delayed it too long and instead made others so powerful that in the future they themselves will be able to tear the Fatherland apart and subjugate their colleagues and certainly will do so if the Pact of Inheritance and the hereditary succession to the kingdom and Your Royal Majesty's government, by the grace of God and the means of Christian marriage, are not maintained.

For thus the entire Fatherland, with those who have become so powerful through the royal inheritance of one person, is bound to harmony, unity and obedience, in accordance with the laws and general statutes that past kings and Estates have sworn so solemnly to themselves and to their descendants, as if bound with one hand, and not to be traitorous to God, in Whose name they have sworn, and who also does not leave unpunished those who abuse His name.

I wish from God the Most High that He would most graciously enlighten and guide with his Holy Spirit the thoughts and counsels of Your Royal Majesty, both herein and in everything pertaining to that, so that it may send glory to His holy name and gives Your Royal Majesty and to your high-born heirs of your body and to your and their possible successors a long, happy and tranquil reign for as long as the world exists.

French translation (my own):

Laurent Adami,

Swedish translation (my own):

Lorenzo Adami,

English translation (my own):

Lorenzo Adami,
I need to give you a brief reply to your two letters which I have received in these last few ordinaries, because in some particulars I remit myself to the first letters I wrote to you; and although I have also warned you not to let yourself be deceived in any way, I remind you of it again, seeing that you want to believe that [their] feelings [have changed], since [the State] has always particularly been [contrary to my interests], and it always will be, say what one will. I will [never believe] this, however.

You may avail yourself of this warning too, [but dissemble and show that you believe it]. As for the exercise of religion, refrain from making any discourse of it, because I don't care if it is spoken of any more. When I get there, I will make as much use of it as I can, as I have written to you at other times.

I am surprised that you have not written to me about my other pretensions that I have with the Crown. I would like you to think of them and to solicit payment from the same, as well as compensation for the damages I have suffered by the contributions of Pomerania.

As for your departure from there, follow the instructions you already have from my other letters. However, if you know you can be of some service to me by staying longer, do it. I also remind you of the perils you may run while traveling at this season of the year, due to the difficulty of the passes. Therefore, in this point, I leave it to your discretion to do what God, from whom I desire for you all the best, inspires you. From Hamburg, December 28, 1666.

Christine Alexandra.
Au roi de Suède.

Swedish translation (my own; using Kristina's Swedish address of Karl as son rather than nephew):

Kristina Alexandra.
Till Konungen av Sverige.

English translation (my own):

My Lord Brother and Nephew,
I have learned that one takes as a pretext for the oppression of my rights a relation of President Kleihe, which, having come into my hands and having considered it, I feel obliged to assure Your Majesty that it is entirely false and that it does not contain one true word. I do not deny the letter that I wrote to Your Majesty; on the contrary, I thank you for having published it, because I claim that it does not contain a single word which is not worthy of me, nor any that can offend or shock the interests or the person of Your Majesty, assuring you that all the insults that will be done to me will not prevent me from preserving for Sweden and for Your Majesty an eternal friendship and tenderness.

I have believed I had to let Your Majesty know this truth in order to ask you to order that one seek some more plausible or more apparent pretext than the false report of a German to justify an action, which will attract the wrath of Heaven and the universal blame of all the earth on those who are the authors of it. I hope that my previous letters will have obtained from Your Majesty the justice that I asked of you; in the meantime I am,
My Lord Brother and Nephew,
Your good Sister and Aunt
Kristina Alexandra.
To the King of Sweden.

English translation (my own):

Lord Governor General,
I am sending you the answer to the letter that the King my nephew wrote to me, to which you will add all the more vivid expressions to persuade him that I sympathise with his just sorrow; but what will I say to you concerning the news which you give me of my father's body, of which you speak to me on this occasion, and which is of the number of those which I would hardly have believed if someone other than you would have written? This prodigy deserves an authentic certificate, and you will do me an agreeable service if you can send it to me in the proper form. I do not know what to say to you on this except that God, who made this great King glorious on earth in so many ways, should have wanted to produce wonders even from his ashes. Do not fail to send me a more exact account of this curiosity, of which I want to know all the peculiarities. In the meantime, you can see that my father became a Capuchin after his death, and after mine I want to be dressed as a Capuchin in my turn, because it seems to me that it is a country dress made on purpose for the journey from the other world. God preserve and bless you. Rome, December 8, 1685.

Claretta's transcript of the letter:

Kristina Alexandra.

English translation (my own):

My Lord Brother and Nephew,
Lord Rosenbach, my envoy extraordinary at your court, has just given me news which seems incredible to me, and whatever confidence I have in his fidelity, it becomes suspect to me by such surprising reports that he made me in his last dispatch. He supposes to me firstly that one declared to him on behalf of Your Majesty that you are resolved to prevent me from entering Sweden during your minority, secondly that they want to seize my property with the reservation that they want me to pay my income through the hands of the Chamber, as they say very punctually.

I confess to Your Majesty that I find it hard to believe that you can ever condescend to a procedure so opposed to justice and reason; but if, against my hope, it turns out that way, I beg you to consider firstly that I am presently in Rome, that I have no intention or desire to leave, and that I will be greatly obliged to Your Majesty if you let me remain there without forcing myself to move away from it by a procedure that I do not believe I have deserved from you.

For the second point, I have nothing to say to Your Majesty except to beg you to give it serious reflection, as I assure myself that when Your Majesty takes the trouble to consider this plan with a stale sense, this resolution will horrify you more than myself. All I have to do on this occasion is to implore Your Majesty for your own sake, for the sake of your glory, and for the sake of that of my nation, not to rush on this occasion.

I assure you that it is not my only interest, however great it may be, which obliges me to speak to you about it in this way; I beg you to believe that, since God has given me the grace to give me a heart great enough to do without the crown you wear for so long, I will do without the rest.

But it seems to me that Sweden and Your Majesty must have some difficulty in dispensing with your glory, and I cannot persuade myself that Your Majesty can become so hostile to me and to yourself that you would wish to deny me the justice and the favour that I ask of you to let me remain in the situation in which I find myself; it is so advantageous for Your Majesty that I do not think it is in your interest to disturb it.

I have so much confidence in your friendship and prudence that I assure myself that Your Majesty will take my side and uphold the justice of my interests, which are inseparably attached to those of your greatness and your fortune; but if by a fatality that I could neither understand nor avoid, I should see myself disappointed in the confidence that I have in your justice and friendship, I will endeavour to make known to Your Majesty, to my nation, and to all the earth, by the honesty of my process, that I have deserved better treatment.

I remit myself for the rest to what Lord Rosenbach will tell you on my behalf, begging you to give him as full credence as you give to me, especially when he assures you on my behalf that I am with complete sincerity,
My Lord Brother and Nephew,
Your good Sister and Aunt
Kristina Alexandra.
