Anders Fryxell on Kristina's birth, infancy and early childhood

Berättelser ur svenska historien, nionde delen: Drottning Kristina, första afdelningen, pages 1 to 3, by Anders Fryxell, 1841
The account:

Men Gustaf Adolf svarade: »Min syster!

Man frågade kungen.

English translation (my own):

At the beginning of their marriage, King Gustav Adolf and his wife had two daughters, one after the other, both named Kristina, but who died immediately after birth. In the summer of 1626, Maria Eleonora was for the third time in a blessed state, and she, like the King himself, ardently desired a son. The predictions of the astrologers agreed with this. They further predicted that the child, if it survived 24 hours, would become quite a remarkable person, but that at its birth either it or one of its parents must give up their life.

The child was born on December 8, 1626. It had dark skin and screamed in a strong and rough voice. One thought it was a boy and told the parents so. They rejoiced vivaciously, and with them the whole court. So much greater was the sadness over the mistake. No one wanted to give the King the unpleasant message back. Finally, the Countess Palatine Katarina had to go there. The King took the matter calmly, embraced and kissed his infant daughter, and said: "Let us thank God, my sister! I hope that this girl will be as good as a boy. I am satisfied and pray to God to preserve this child."

The Countess Palatine uttered a few words about the King's youth, about his likely hope of still having a son, etc. But Gustav Adolf replied: "My sister! I am satisfied and pray to God to preserve this child."

Then he had the same expressions of joy employed as for a prince, and one could not detect the slightest trace of dissatisfaction in him. "She's sure to be a clever girl," he joked, "because she's already fooled us all."

Only after Maria Eleonora had somewhat recovered did one dare to inform her of the real situation. She took it violently, was inconsolable and could not bear the child, partly because it was a girl, and partly because it was dark and unpleasant. For this reason, it was rarely with its mother, but was mostly left to the nurse. According to Kristina's own statement, during this time one is supposed to have dropped her several times in order to thereby cause her some harm, possibly to kill her. Such an intention seems less likely. On the other hand, it is certain that one of Kristina's shoulders was slightly higher than the other, which the Queen herself attributed to one of these falls.

The tenderness Kristina lacked from her mother, she found in abundance in her father, who loved the quick and brave girl very much. She once followed her parents to Kalmar. The lord of the castle wanted to celebrate the arrival of the royals by means of volleys of cannon and guns, but he feared thereby frightening the little princess. One asked the king. "Shoot!", he said; "she is the daughter of a soldier and must get used to it."

The volleys thundered. Little Kristina, who could not yet speak, laughed at the shots, clapped her hands, and gave signs that she wanted to hear more volleys. This and the like increased her father attachment to her even more. As well as having an inkling of his imminent death, he arranged everything concerning the princess's upbringing with great sadness before leaving for Germany. Under the pretext that Queen Maria Eleonora would accompany the King abroad, Kristina was entrusted to her aunt, the Countess Palatine Katarina; and in advance he appointed as her governor the councilman Axel Banér, as subgovernor Gustaf Evertsson Horn, and as teacher the court preacher Johannes Matthiæ. Separately and explicitly, the King prescribed that Kristina should be brought up as if she were a prince.

We have previously told of the last farewell she took from her father on the shore of the Baltic Sea. For three days afterwards, she is supposed to have cried incessantly.

While the King stayed in Germany, Kristina grew up with her aunt and received her first education there. From this time, we have two letters in her own hand to Gustav Adolf. They are written in German, which language she learned as her mother tongue already in childhood through both her mother, the Count Palatine Johan Kasimir, and the German courtiers of them both.

Most Powerful, etc.
Because in my previous letter I sufficiently informed Your Royal Majesty that I did not want to interpret the words that Your Royal Majesty had sent to your secretary Stropp according to their nature and form of wording, but that therein, as on any other occasion, I have kept myself in the assurance I have taken of Your Royal Majesty's innate virtue as well as your felt inclination towards me and my kingdom, which also confirms me more than any oral or written contestation of my filial respect and good will towards Your Royal Majesty, I affirm that I shall always strive for the best for your actions and comportments and I shall seek no adversity towards them.

I therefore find it much less necessary for this time to persuade Your Royal Majesty with many words that I put complete faith in Your Royal Majesty's assurances made above in your last most affectionate letter and if Your Royal Majesty's honest and sincere heart, as well as your persistent constancy, leave no room for doubt, only wishing that it had pleased Your Royal Majesty on your side to take up the well-intentioned proposal I will make about the sublease of your maintenance lands to your governor general Lord Seved Bååth, as well as in the resolutions which I have had to present to Your Royal Majesty about your arrival in the Kingdom and the thereby annulled free exercise of religion following the unanimous decision of all the Estates of the Realm (which were convened at the last Riksdag), about which I opposed the Governor General for the reason which Your Royal Majesty's letters to him as well as his subsequent oral propositions give to me and more, filially and lovingly begging Your Royal Majesty that it not only please Your Royal Majesty to let the same thing be proposed, but at the same time to be assured that in all this I have no other interest or regard other than what the Estates of the Realm have recommended to me; and I, although I would like to, cannot safely change it without their knowledge, so that from Your Royal Majesty's equanimity I certainly want to presume that Your Royal Majesty will not therefore let your affection and inclination towards me and my kingdom fall in any measure, because I, on my side, shall always unalterably keep Your Royal Majesty in my filial respect and obligation, hereby recommending Your Royal Majesty, etc.

Most Powerful Queen,
My highly honoured and dearly beloved Lady Mother,
As I am assured that in all measure I have borne for Your Royal Majesty a filial affection and respect, I have also shown and announced the same in actual fact and in all the things that Your Royal Majesty with reason demands of me and with which I, according to my power and  feasibility itself, have been able to comply. Nothing else is desirable than that everything of this kind should in due course win Your Royal Majesty a pleasant contentment, so Your Royal Majesty must be sufficiently able to reflect how improbably I must have understood the emphatic orders, dated Hamburg the 15th of August and the 1st of this month, that Your Royal Majesty ascribed and ordered her secretary Joakim Stropp, to issue here in my kingdom such rumours which in itself could be valued as nothing else than as a harmful seed to numerous difficulties and delusions in which I nevertheless, in consideration of Your Royal Majesty's innate virtue and goodness towards me as well as toward my kingdom, her own Fatherland (whose welfare is here also interested), cannot be attributed to Your Royal Majesty herself, but much more to the malice of others, who must have mislead and unforeseeably surprised Your Royal Majesty, no doubt for the sake of their own interest.

Wherefore, too, in the filial respect I have for Your Royal Majesty, I shall not permit any shortening or alteration, but rather, I shall endeavour at the highest level to always show towards Your Royal Majesty such a disposition of heart as Your Royal Majesty may be able to assure with what well-intentioned readiness I have also sought (and am still seeking) to go to Your Royal Majesty and undertake nothing else than that which may turn out for Your Royal Majesty's own benefit.

And, so that I may be able to make my good intention more permanent and immutable, the subjection of all those things which seem in some measure able to hinder or stop is lessened, so I have discovered something concerning this, and as suggested, to Your Royal Majesty's governor, the well-born Lord Seved Bååth, my inalienable sentiment, which, as he will undoubtedly further present it to Your Royal Majesty's, so I also want to have referred to it, living in the certain confidence that Your Royal Majesty will perceive and interpret it in the best way in a good and sincere action is, just as if it came from me myself.

And if Your Royal Majesty would want to take some pleasure in that, so I hope that time and the outcome will be able to sufficiently testify that I have faithfully intended that for Your Royal Majesty both in that as well as in everything else, for I also have no other regard for that than to decline everything that which otherwise would be a hindrance to me in every way so that I could not, as a result of my obligation, inclination and desire to be able to continue, but return, in my filial devotion; I hereby filially and lovingly commend Your Royal Majesty to God's kind and gracious protection and to all desirable prosperity.

Datum, etc.

English translation (my own):

Most Powerful Queen, my highly honoured and dearly beloved Lady Mother,
From Your Royal Majesty's letter, dated Hamburg on the 5/15th of this past month, as well as from the memorandum which her secretary at the General Government, the noble and virtuous Joakim Stropp, has deposited in writing on behalf of Your Royal Majesty, I have moreover noted how Your Royal Majesty refers to a letter of mine dated October 12, 1664, in which I shall have stated that Your Royal Majesty's coming into Sweden would under some acceptable previous conditions be agreeable to me and the Estates of the Realm, desiring Your Royal Majesty to know what such conditions actually depend on. And I wanted to consider how it might be done in some convenient and expedient way that the previously requested freedom of religion for the person of Your Royal Majesty and her court servants of the Roman doctrine might be reached and won, giving it Your Royal Majesty to understand that Your Royal Majesty would be minded to leave for here in Stockholm at the time of the Riksdag and to serve herself with my interposition to obtain the consent of the Estates of the Realm for the free exercise of the aforementioned religion.

Now, as I have always afterwards watched how in all possible ways I might express to Your Royal Majesty my always ready, willing and filial respect and to bring about all the satisfaction that I would ever think Your Royal Majesty might desire of me, so, at the past Riksdag of 1664, when Your Royal Majesty, through the then-governor of the royal estates in Pomerania, had ordered the exercise of such freedom of religion, I used all possible diligence to do Your Royal Majesty a pleasant contentment in her petition, and I therefore let the same thing be presented to the Estates of the Realm. They then took it into careful consideration, they deliberated it on all sides, and they explained themselves thereupon with a special article.

Such an explanation is also announced to Your Royal Majesty's envoy that he would properly insinuate it to Your Royal Majesty, because I also refer to it in my aforementioned letter, and I speak so much upon the same explanation that Your Royal Majesty should therefore obtain reason to further question him on it. But as I presume Your Royal Majesty must not have received a complete information about it, as Your Royal Majesty now wants to know what the conditions could be and what could be prejected therein, I must most lovingly fulfill Your Royal Majesty's request in the most convenient and most secure regard to have copies made of the article, of this declaration, and of the material. An additional resolution was inserted, among other things, in the aforesaid Riksdag; it was confirmed at the end of the said Riksdag, and it will lovingly be sent over to Your Royal Majesty.

Not doubting that Your Royal Majesty will thereby take into account the right nature of the conditions, which has been agreed upon and stipulated with the unanimous decision of the Royal Regency and all the Riksdag and the Estates, and that also, for her high prudence, it will therefore please Your Royal Majesty to consider whether she may be permitted to come to the Riksdag or that I may be allowed to interpose myself to change some such constitution and statute of the Realm, I think it more because Your Royal Majesty will certainly be persuaded that both I and all the Estates of the Realm have the thought of the kindness and affection which Your Royal Majesty has that Your Royal Majesty owes to me and to her dear Fatherland, and that Your Royal Majesty will not desire anything which might go against the unanimous resolution and decree of the Realm.

Whereupon I completely trust and also offer my due respect to Your Royal Majesty, and I commend Your Royal Majesty to God's kind protection and to all desirable welfare and prosperity. Given, etc.

English translation (my own):

Most Powerful Queen,
My highly honoured and dearly beloved Lady Mother,
Your Royal Majesty's letter, dated Hamburg of the 5/15th of last month, is well insinuated to me through her secretary to the general government, the noble and well-born Joachim Stropp, from whom I have moreover learned as well as from his further submissive account and written memorial how Your Royal Majesty has been caused to undertake such a long journey to and how it has pleased Your Royal Majesty through Stropp to entrust some things which he would present to me according to his instructions and to make a proper reply thereupon.

Now I cannot but lovingly announce to Your Royal Majesty that I, noting Your Royal Majesty's health and soundness, rejoice from the bottom of my heart, congratulating Your Royal Majesty on her happy prosperity, health and arrival in those places, wishing that God Almighty want to always preserve Your Royal Majesty in desirable well-being.

But it would still be unpleasant to me that Your Royal Majesty should be caused to make this arduous journey due to some impropriety or the reason that something happens to the detriment of one of her maintenance estates in Pomerania and the resolutions passed by me. I have therefore, without any delay, not only had the aforementioned secretary Stropp appear before me and have heard his appeal, but I have also explained myself in writing in his submitted memorandum, as Your Royal Majesty has learned from the paper itself, presumably to Your Royal Majesty's good pleasure.

Which I have also found good to have Your Royal Majesty's secretary appointed himself to provide, on the point that he personally would much better be able to explain to Your Royal Majesty, whereupon and on what he will otherwise faithfully tell, I shall also always refer myself to the filial respect and constant loving affection that are due to Your Royal Majesty, and I lovingly and faithfully commend her to God's gentle and gracious protection and to all desirable prosperity. Given, etc.
Hedvig Eleonora.

Note: In accordance with the nobility's ideals of friendship in the early modern era, kings and queens saw themselves as siblings; and because Kristina had adopted her/his/their cousin Karl Gustav, Karl's father, as her/his/their son in order to make him her/his/their heir, the boy inherited that title upon his father's death.

Our favour and gracious will. We have not only learned from your letter the day before yesterday, dated The Hague on the 12th of this month (New Style), Harald Appelboom, but also a few days past the passage by sea from Holland, that a real action and undertaking was attempted, but failed against the city of Amsterdam. Because now this matter is of great importance, it is therefore Our gracious will and command that you notify Us by all posts and opportunities of this and all other conditions of the anchor bouys in those places, so that We may have your notice from time to time. May you fulfill Our will therein, and We hereby graciously commend you to God Almighty, etc., etc.
