La regina Cristina di Svezia in Italia (1655-1689): Memorie storiche ed aneddotiche con documenti, pages IX to XVI, published by Gaudenzio Claretta, 1892

The introduction:

English translation (my own):

It is still a lively satisfaction when, in gleaning in our fields, we happen to wander from the narrow soil of our country and thus reap some fruit, which has taken root also in regions of our beautiful peninsula, more notable for their fame in comparison with the others. And then when the province that offers itself to investigation, is named after Rome, a shining beacon in which the history of the world is summarised; whose cosmopolitan character means that as far as its history is concerned, it is also intertwined with that of Europe in general, oh! then the reward for the labours is already well and truly obtained. If then one realises that in the seventeenth century, the subject of this history, Rome, which fertilised the seed of the third Renaissance, was the Italian literary meeting place and the arena of European politics, one cannot help but recognise how important the memories that concern it can have, even when discussing them only indirectly.

Well, we will wander through this Rome, evoking the dead, and we will see popes, kings, cardinals, soft and frivolous nobles, intriguing men of letters, idlers, rise from their graves, who, more or less, will contribute to giving colour to our narration. We will live for years and years in the environment of easy morality, of the absolute gallant, and among those barons who in the Middle Ages, armoured with iron, had become comfortable princes, with powdered wigs and silk stockings, surrounded by a retinue of arrogant servants and annoying clients.

It is true that in recent years several praiseworthy and important publications have contributed to dispel to a large extent the darkness that previously veiled the true nature of many facts.

Thus, not a few political figures, men of letters, artists and so on, were judged according to the criterion that is well suited to the true and indisputable progress achieved in modern times by our studies; and this in large part thanks to the ease that exists in consulting the indispensable materials for the historical edifice that is gradually being erected.

Likewise, the deeds of the famous Queen Kristina of Sweden were taken up as a topic by so many contemporary and later writers that anyone who presumed to say entirely new things about that Pallas of the North could be accused of being reckless.

And what about those scholars who still wanted to dwell on this topic today?

We will not here recall the monographs that in recent years have seen the light in Bologna, Lucca, Modena and Pisa, as it would be necessary to come to too extensive a bibliographical notice, and it will be enough for us to mention with praise Lorenzo Grottanelli and Arvède Barine, of whom the first in the Rassegna nazionale, the second in the Revue des deux mondes, summarised in erudite pages the most notable points of Kristina's life.

Indeed, it must be said that Grottanelli in particular, who had the opportunity to consult many Roman documents, hit the mark in the judgements he gave regarding that Queen who, a vessel without sail and without government, was at her own mercy in a foreign land at a very young age.

Here, however, it is right to recognise that much earlier, and without much support from documents, those select thinkers, d'Alembert and Foscolo, came close to the truth in their judgments, especially the latter, who considered her half queen and half letterata, half magnanimous, half crazy, entirely ferocious. What a different way of expressing oneself from that used by the good and prudent Muratori, who instead remained content to write that Kristina was, in spirit, in talent and in literature superior to her sex.

But not everyone treated this subject with the calm and serenity that are required, both by historical dignity and by the interest that one must always have in paying homage to the truth. Unfortunately, the actions of the Queen of Sweden furnished occasion to the most sinister interpretations, at other times to vent partisan anger. Several authors of writings in hiding and pseudonyms that can be considered true pamphlets, of adulterous and bastard taste, were completely darkened by passion; and with their minds inflamed by religious controversies and political intentions they departed from the straight path, and with the truth mixed with the false and the exaggerated, they gave their story a colour that produces bad confidence in those who are not bound in their judgements.

Now, in the midst of this inextricable thicket caused by the errors that many partisan writers have brought to light, in the midst of this real jumble of flawed materials, the only guiding thread that can enable us to better evaluate the Queen's actions is to resort to the most reliable documents, and those that by their nature are capable of offering the best guarantees.

And this is undoubtedly provided to us by examining the official and even private correspondence of her contemporaries.

Those therefore who, because of the high rank they were awarded or the high office they held, had the means to draw on reliable sources, and those who participated in the events of the Queen's little court, could not help but leave us a more certain memory. And so from the comparative study of the one with the other, we will be able to better ascertain the truth of the facts we are investigating. Such were precisely the ministers and residents of the princes in general, who in addition to the particular news sent to their governments, usually used to corroborate it with the so-called avvisi of Rome, a diary of great interest for its intrinsic value, and for a good part of them still unpublished, and one might even say neglected by those who do not pay enough attention to the fact that those sheets which contain the chronicle of Rome and its court, the particulars of Roman society, were also the precursors of current journalism, raised to such power.

The ministers of other sovereigns, princes, cardinals, prelates, men of letters, artists and scientists who conducted affairs with the Queen can also provide us with much certain information about her life, inclinations, virtues and defects.

As for the first, therefore, the diplomatic correspondence of the residents of the court of Savoy and Tuscany in Rome provided us with excellent material; and interesting information we gathered from the fifteen manuscript volumes that are preserved in the library of the Faculty of Medicine of the illustrious University of Montpellier. The first to inform us of their existence was the most excellent Mr. Lagerheim, minister of Sweden in Berlin; we then had particular knowledge of them from the fortuitous examination of the report on some documents and manuscript codices of subalpine and Italian things contained in the archives and public libraries of southern France published in 1854 by the Commander G. B. Adriani.

Having therefore, thanks to the high patronage of our Ministry of Public Instruction, had ample opportunity to examine these precious materials in our country, we hope that our work will be of some interest, and even, in certain respects, contain a character of originality. And if perhaps we were not the first to make use of them, it seems to us that not all of the documents contained therein have yet been made public. These volumes seem to have been referred to by Johan Arckenholtz, counselor and librarian of the Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel, who is still today the principal historian who has left us a more considerable and more copious monument on Kristina, whatever d'Alembert may have wanted to say, by observing that there is no one, however patient and accustomed to the most tiresome reading, capable of devouring in peace that mass of erudition, in the passage where he wrote:

I remember having seen in Rome in the library of Cardinal Ottoboni several volumes of manuscripts and charters formerly belonging to this princess (Mr. Keister names 18 volumes where there were several letters from Kristina to Saumaise). I had already then the intention of paying homage to these letters, and other acts and papers concerning Kristina by taking advantage of such a favourable rencontre, but the conclave which followed shortly after because of the death of Pope Benedict XIII prevented me from examining them more closely because the libraries of the Vatican were closed, and almost all those of the cardinals. It is true that a lord of my acquaintance in Rome to whom I wrote about them has since kindly promised me copies of these letters and other interesting pieces that he could find, but either because of the war which then spread in Italy, or for other considerations, he has not fulfillled the good hope he has given me. Another friend has not only offered, but has already rendered me, good offices in this regard, as I flatter myself he would have been kind enough to do again if I could have delayed the publication of this work any longer.

It should also be noted that the volumes of Kristina's letters existing in the aforementioned library of Montpellier together with other codices of Italian things, which came out of our country at the time of the political events to which our peninsula was subjected at the end of the eighteenth century, must probably come from the library of the House of Albani in Rome. And perhaps these could also have been consulted by Arckenholtz, since in the two additional volumes, published in 1655 [sic], he rejoices at having been able to consult the Albani library through the favours of Count Blibke, senator of Rome. And he in fact entitled those two volumes of additions to Cardinal Alessandro, of that family. In any case, those volumes which came out of Rome were then saved from possible dispersion by the care of Dr. Prunell, professor and librarian of the medical faculty of that city, and placed in a suitable location to adorn that illustrious temple of Pallas.

The fifteen volumes referring to the Queen of Sweden are in quarto and bound in parchment; and they contain letters from princes, cardinals, ministers, men of letters and artists addressed to her, and many that she wrote to the same. Some of them are already seen here and there published in collections, and by the same Arckenholtz already cited. But nevertheless some of these also deserve to be republished, both because, even without admitting the observation of the above-mentioned d'Alembert, not all libraries possess the work in question in its entirety, among which the National Library of Turin has only the first two volumes, and then for the variants that the drafts present, precious for the autographic additions of the Queen herself. Unlike most sovereigns and princes, who, distracted from their offices of state, cannot take care of every detail of their correspondence, she had the drafts redone herself, erased what she did not like and augmented them with spicy additions in her own handwriting, with admonitions all her own to the secretaries or copyists.

And without a doubt, her correspondence is always interesting, in which it is appropriate to forget the tragedy of Monaldeschi at one moment, to praise her when she sees herself inclined, one day to advocate the cause of persecuted Protestants and Jews, another to be inflamed by the sight of the heroic deeds of Sobieski, now to protect Bernini and other virtuosi, now to take an interest in the happy genius of Grotius, Descartes, Filicaia, etc., now to reel off bitter truths to those more powerful than her, and on whom she depended, now to know how to be manfully
tetragona in the blows of fortune.

Moreover, with the system already followed elsewhere, of frequently reporting significant periods of the epistolary collections of the characters in question, it will be possible to outline ever more vividly and naturally this strange and curious physiognomy, altered not a little by her flatterers, as well as by her detractors.

In short, with the aid of the documents examined, and with that freedom and independence of judgment that we seem to have always constantly maintained, without all that courtly flexibility by which by giving documents an appearance that they do not have, one unfortunately ends up sacrificing the truth in homage to the powerful, it is our confidence that by separating the gold from the rubbish, it is possible to make our Queen appear in her genuine and real being, unlike those who, by bowing too much to make a beam of a twig, have handed down to us a pale reflection and a weak echo.

It is our duty to express especially our well-deserved gratitude both to our ministers of public education and of foreign affairs who gave us the opportunity to have at hand the aforementioned volumes from the University of Montpellier, and to the supreme governors of the latter, who, in order to please us, did not refuse to deprive themselves of them for a few months, nor did they fear to expose them to the risk of a long journey.

Nor do they wish to be dissociated from these feelings of knowing soul, the noble lords Baron of Hungern-Sternberg, intimate advisor and head of the chancellery of H. R. H. the Grand Duke of Baden, of whose kindness we had previously had abundant proof, and the also praised Lord Commander Lagerheim, minister of Sweden in Berlin, to whom we are also indebted for the portrait that adorns these pages. It was he who, worthy representative of a cultured and literary sovereign, showed himself to be most eager to assist us in our first investigations, the foundation of the edifice that we had decided to raise on the most solid and secure foundations possible.

Spanish translation (my own):

Señora my Most Serene Sister,
The Viceroy of Naples, Don Pedro de Aragón, who has so worthily satisfied his part here and made Your Majesty's name shine as it has deserved, has returned your letter to me and expressed your affectionate sentiments verbally. I have heard it with great pleasure, particularly for the good news he has given me of Your Majesty's health and that of the Catholic King, there being nothing in the world that is closer to my heart than this, knowing how important your preservation is to Christendom.

I thank Your Majesty with all my heart for such a courteous demonstration, and I assure you that I will never yield to anyone else in the most cordial affection that can be given towards Your Majesties and that at all times and occasions I will take particular care and attention to make Your Majesty experience its effects; and may God protect and prosper Your Majesty's person as I desire.

English translation (my own):

Most Serene, Most Powerful Queen,
Most Gracious Lady,
I have deemed it my duty to attend to Your Royal Majesty at this opportunity with these most submissive lines, so that Your Royal Majesty may thereby most graciously learn the condition of this tribunal, which has now been brought into such a state through your most commendable arrangement as it was originally intended, so that justice may have its full course and those who are in need of revenge may most likely be repaid, for the remarkable satisfaction of all Your Royal Majesty's German lands and for the increase of your own greatest praise and glory.

And I can attest in all truth that the persons most graciously appointed for the execution of this laudable work will with all fidelity and diligence strive to fulfill the concept and trust that Your Royal Majesty has most graciously placed in them, with the which good intention I shall always endeavour to obtain from them in my humble position so that my fidelity will be felt.

And in order that this could be carried out all the better, it would be desirable that the most gracious institution (regarding the maintenance of all court clerks) should have its correctness as the one that was laudably and most graciously altered by Your Royal Majesty before this. But how incorrect this is, Your Royal Majesty and others will graciously learn partly from the College's letter and partly from this most submissive referendarum, to which I most obediently refer, as I do not presume to importune Your Royal Majesty in that good hope along with the others, most submissively promising myself that Your Royal Majesty will most graciously consider all our bad conditions and will have such an accessible regulation made that everyone could thereby be helped and satisfied, so that everyone could all the better subsist here in loco and attend to what is entrusted to him.

And if I may here, with Your Royal Majesty's most gracious permission, annex my particular interest, I most humbly recommend it to Your Royal Majesty with the most obedient request that I be graciously and soon relieved of the difficulty I have now been in for the 9th month (the reason for the maintenance), because I have had no other means here than those sent to me by my own family. Now they are also beginning to fail, so that I have nothing in my hands with which to support myself.

If I had my own means, they would be most willingly employed in the service of Your Royal Majesty and the Crown; but because I lack them, I am therefore compelled to have and seek my recourse in Your Royal Majesty's high clemency and to most humbly implore from you for it to be so graciously arranged that in this and such cases I may be most graciously helped. My already great obligations would be hereby increased, and I shall therefore always be with devotion and respect
Your Royal Majesty's
most obedient and most dutiful servant
Bengt Oxenstierna.

Dieselbe waren:

1. Der Reichsdrotset zu dem höchsten Gericht und Rechtssachen des ganzen Reichs, Gabriel Gustafsson Oxenstiern;

2. Der Reichsmarschalk zu dem Kriegswesen, Jakobus de la Gardie;

3. Der Reichsadmiral zu den Seesachen und Schiffahrten, Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm.

4. Der Reichskanzler zu den ausländischen Händeln, Krieg, Friede und Bündnisse betreffend, Axel Oxenstiern, anjetzo in Deutschland. Und endlich:

1. Le grand drost pour la Cour suprême et les affaires juridiques de tout le royaume, Gabriel Gustafsson Oxenstierna;

2. Le grand maréchal pour les affaires militaires, Jacques de la Gardie;

1. Riksdrotset för hela rikets högsta domstol och rättsliga frågor, Gabriel Gustafsson Oxenstierna;

2. Riksmarsken för militära angelägenheter, Jakob de la Gardie;

English translation (my own):

We reported on the state of the Kingdom of Sweden and its inhabitants last year. In particular, how the councilmen found it appropriate to call a Riksdag for this year, which was held with a full assembly of the Estates and with good consensus, because "misfortune and danger brings unity to the community".

The conclusion consisted of the following main points:

1. They remembered the Resolution of the Realm of 1627, when, in the event of the King's death without a male heir, they had agreed to accept his only legitimate daughter, Princess Kristina, as their queen and hereditary princess, and decided what they would do with her, promising to show all loyalty and obedience to her, under penalty of offending her majesty, against those who opposed her.

Whereupon they reaffirmed all the agreements and letters of renunciation made against King Sigismund and his heirs in Poland, as well as all their supporters, insofar as they also wanted to repeat the agreement made at Örebro.

2. They also promised to remain by the unchanged Augsburg Confession, but as contained in their synod at Uppsala.

3. Because the Queen is still a minor and cannot govern the kingdom, the heads of the five high offices are hereby confirmed as guardians of her royal person and of the administration of the kingdom's affairs. They were:

1. The Grand Steward for the highest court and legal matters of the entire kingdom, Gabriel Gustafsson Oxenstierna;

2. The Grand Marshal for military affairs, Jakob de la Gardie;

3. The Grand Admiral for maritime affairs and shipping, Carl Carlsson Gyllenhielm.

4. The Grand Chancellor for foreign affairs concerning war, peace and alliances, Axel Oxenstierna, now in Germany. And finally:

5. The Grand Treasurer, who governs the chamber system, the State's income and its calculations, Gabriel Bengtsson Oxenstierna; so that all affairs of the realm could be conveniently divided and understood under these five colleges.

Although a certain Form of Government had been drafted and communicated to various Estates, with the announcement that the King intended to introduce it, however, because this had not been done during His Majesty's lifetime and the Estates as a whole had not been instructed on it, the arrangements made were left to stand for the time being. Queen Kristina, having come of age and seeing her power somewhat limited as a result, did not wish to enter into it either.

The war against the Emperor and the Catholic League in Germany was to be continued until a suitable, secure peace was achieved. To this end, the tender and arrangement approved last autumn were to be brought to fruition as effectively as possible.

Next to this, the previous excise taxes were continued, but the cattle tax was abolished, with the offer to sacrifice body, property and blood if necessary for the religion, for the Queen, and for the freedom of the Fatherland. With this, the Riksdag was concluded, and the decree was signed by the Council of the Realm.

The Grand Chancellor Oxenstierna's office within the realm, because he had to wait out the war in Germany, was to be administered by his brother Gabriel in the meantime.

Finally, it was decided that the royal body should be fetched from Germany and brought to its resting place in Sweden with royal honours. Two councilmen, Gabriel Oxenstierna and Matthias Soop, were dispatched from Sweden to Wolgast to accompany it. The Elector of Brandenburg and his wife, the Prince and Princess, the two Dukes of Mecklenburg and the Duke of Croÿ and their wives, as well as other high and distinguished men and women, came there in person to comfort the royal widow and to honour the transfer with their presence.

The royal body was brought with a considerable procession, in which the royal widow herself was present, onto a large ship covered with mourning drapes, and it was taken with a well-provided fleet, which landed at Nyköping, where the said body was laid down until everything could be prepared for a proper funeral.
