Mémoires concernant Christine, reine de Suède, volume 3, pages 264 to 265, compiled and edited by Johan Arckenholtz, 1759; original at the National Library of Naples (Biblioteca Nazionale Vittorio Emanuele III)

"It is here that Galdenblad goes into greater detail about the conversions he facilitated. He considers himself fortunate to have been able to bring his two brothers, Lars and Johan, from Sweden against the wishes of his father and mother, and to have brought them back to his faith. The abjuration of the former, he says, could not have been carried out so secretly in Rome that it would not have been known in Sweden. The elder brother had therefore written to his parents that if they wanted Lars (whom he had already sent at his own expense to Hungary against the Turks) to return to Sweden, they only had to send his younger brother, Johan, to Rome to escort him. This Jesuit trick worked for him, and the younger brother, although with much repugnance, embraced the Catholic religion with a Ljungberg and two other Swedes, who seem to have had some commission for the Queen (Miscellanea politica, pages 3-6 and 35.).

Andreas Galdenblad kept the Queen informed of the progress of his conversions. He greatly praised the joy and satisfaction that Kristina had shown him. But when he tried to extort money from her for the neophytes, she simply replied: 'You can assure them all of my protection, provided it costs me nothing; for I have no money at present.'

On another occasion, the Queen told him: 'I promise you my protection as much as my poverty allows.'

Fortunately, Kristina's finances were very precarious at that time; otherwise, it is likely that Galdenblad would have attracted a greater number of Swedes to his cause. The Pope had spent enormous sums on the Queen's reception in Rome, hoping that several prominent families in Sweden and Germany would follow Kristina's example and become Catholic (See Mémoires de Christine, volume I, page 514, and volume II, pages 83-110.). These two sources being so thoroughly exhausted, little remained to be used for the new converts, who numbered only a few."

The letter (with Kristina's handwritten comment in italics):

Allernådigste Drottning,

English translation (my own):

Most Gracious Queen,
The incomparable zeal that Your Royal Majesty has for the true Catholic faith makes me bold enough to most humbly supplicate that it please Your Royal Majesty to give your most gracious patronage to another of my brothers, whom I have, by the grace of God, albeit somewhat with difficulty, brought so far that he is now enlightened and that within a few days he will make his abjuration and that Your Royal Majesty would deign to let him come before your most gracious face to make his most humble prostration.
It's agreed! I promise you protection as far as the term of my poverty will be able to provide for it.

Above: Kristina.

Note: Andreas Galdenblad was very active in converting travelling Swedes to Catholicism and succeeded — against his parents' wishes — in attracting his two younger brothers, Lars and Johan, to Rome; they converted in 1683 and 1685 respectively. Andreas himself had converted in Namur in 1671, changing his last name from Browald to Galdenblad, and in 1674 he arrived in Rome and became Kristina's secretary for her Swedish correspondence from 1677 until her death in 1689. Andreas died in 1698.

English translation (my own):

Most Gracious Queen,
As Your Royal Majesty, upon my brother's arrival here, has not only granted him permission to appear before your royal face, but you have also most graciously warned him not to be obstinate against the Catholic truth, and I have in fact found how much Your Royal Majesty's gracious reprimand has succeeded in bringing an erring man to the right path of salvation, so it is both my duty and his to, next to the good cooperation of the Most High, attribute to Your Royal Majesty the conversion of this soul, which now, praise be to God, desires nothing higher than to become a true member of God's true Church by means of a secret profession (Why, I'm delighted!).

It would have already happened, Most Gracious Queen, if I had not held something back for the sake of our Swedes and especially Mr. Ljungberg, so that it might not become obvious and my brother would thus be prevented from returning to Sweden to carry out both our intentions there; but I hope, if Your Royal Majesty would most graciously allow the said Mr. Ljungberg to tarry here a little, as his expedition is not particularly pressing that (Let him stay as long as he wants, provided it doesn't cost me anything, because I have no money at present.) he too, although hitherto excessively obstinate, will soon give God the glory and consider himself won over. He has already come into the greatest doubts about his doctrine and will find no inner peace until he has further sought where the truth consists; and as he himself wishes to be able to use some little time solely for that purpose (I'm delighted!), so I most humbly beg Your Royal Majesty that he may be able to delay his journey a little longer. If not, his despatch is all ready.

French translation (my own; I cannot tag it as such due to character limits in the tags):

Christine, etc.
Notre, etc.

Christine.

English translation (my own):

Kristina, etc.
Our, etc. Your letter of the 2nd of this month, along with its annexes, has been well received by Us, faithful men and commissioners to the Danish peace treaty, and, among other things, We have therefore informed you that it has been discovered to you how the States' ambassador de Witt and his colleagues had received letters from their principal States General, as well as permission and instructions to enter into conjunction with Us both in arms and in the treaty, and that to that end they were have been given the order to dispose of the quality of the mediation, to come to you, and to request that We and the Crown of Sweden be satisfied and they too in equal measure on their side, therefore providing to you that you on Our behalf would cooperate with them and discuss their interests pari passu with Ours, as the postscript of your letter further contains and states all this with the circumstances.

That the States General have now resolved to enter into conjunction with Us for the execution of the alliance, We hold it entirely to be good for Us and Our state, seeing that they are now intending to join you in the treaty on the preservation of freedom of navigation and commerce. But nevertheless, as We must not be unreasonable in thinking that in the long run (if they were otherwise mostly correct about their interest) they will withdraw from trade and then let Us alone be involved in it, We also have seen and understood from the instructions that the States General have had written for their commissioners and sent to you through Appelboom that their commissioners will compete with and alongside Us on the point of liberty of commerce and navigation and, according to the content of the alliance, urge this conjunction, although we have given them express orders that their commissioners should not speak or worry about anything of Our interest that We might otherwise have to pretend to.

And this will undoubtedly be extended and understood by both the mediators themselves and the Dutch commissioners there, that because the mentioned point about the liberty of commerce and navigation has already been debated and agreed upon between Us and Denmark, that therefore the commissioners of the States General would hardly want to speak or help urge anything about Our requested real guarantee and assecuration or satisfaction, We therefore most graciously request that you, after Our previous letter to you, dated May 2, follow the instructions given to your power until it is seen if they want to begin and how the matter will begin, urging them as far as is possible with reason and manners to cooperate in the guarantee and satisfaction and representing to them in detail how the point about Our real guarantee and assecuration completely depends on the point about the liberty of commerce and navigation; and from the same, as a consequence, nothing can be separated, but must necessarily be discussed and concluded at the same time and jointly, for you will not lack any useful arguments or remonstrations for it.

As soon as the Dutch have deposited their mediation and entered into the treaty with you, and as soon as We have been informed by you about it, you can expect Our resolution on this, as We also want to consider the instructions of the States General more carefully and to let you know Our sentiment on it.

For the rest, We are now preparing to let Our fleet sail out to Dalarö, where We Ourself are also going to rush to within a day or 4 so that it may quickly get out to sea. God grant it luck and blessing!
Kristina.

Now, since he, as well as many others of Our subjects, have been taken from their estates by the violent procedures of the Danes, to the extent that we would gladly see that you could in some way help him to his recovery, We have therefore, on his submissive request, wished to recommend him to you, with the gracious desire that you want to extend to him in every possible way all good assistance and help him to recover the damage he has suffered, as We also do not doubt that you will allow yourselves to let both his complaints and those of more of Our subjects' be recommended to you in a reasonable manner. And We want, etc.
Kristina.

Christine.

Kristina.
Our especial favour, etc. As We, faithful men and commissioners to the Danish peace treaty, did on last Friday, which was the 2nd of this month, sent secretary Israel Israelsson back from here down to you again with Our letter and relation of your questions sent here with him, so We want to assume that by this time he will have arrived to you and that you will have understood Our final opinion regarding the guarantee and in which you will hold yourselves to that end, as indicated both by Our said letter given to him, as well as in his oral report.

We want to wait to see what the outcome will be in the future, which We hope will be in line with Our intention. We are more or less ready with Our great fleet and will make haste so that it can reach the skerries within a few days and lie there ready to sail, as We are also now in the process of making a certain resolution regarding its design.

And although We do not want to assume that the departure of the fleet from the skerries will be delayed so long that We could receive your answer to this Our letter, as it is uncertain how the wind and weather will behave, We would be pleased if you would most kindly reveal to Us your thoughts about what you believe to be the most advisable thing to do for Our fleet under the current constitution and what the Lord Admiral Erik Ryning can do or let happen if he comes to set up camp in the Sound with the fleet, as well as whether all foreign sailing to and fro may and should in that event have its free course, so that We may see from this how your opinion and consideration concur with Our counsels. And We want, etc.
Kristina.
