English translation (my own):
V.
In the meantime, while Kristina of Sweden was about to arrive at Casale degli Olgiati, news of her reached Rome, and the cardinals designated as legates to receive her prepared to go and meet her.
On the morning of December 20, these most eminent men, before leaving Rome with their courts, met together at a sumptuous banquet offered in his palazzo with Medicean pomp by Cardinal Giovancarlo.
Two large barrels of wine were placed at the disposal of the plebs, and a quantity of wicker baskets of ciambelle were thrown from the windows of the palazzo.
All the streets through which the cavalcade was to pass were crowded with people, the windows of the houses crowded with curious onlookers.
At the Porta del Popolo Their Eminences dismounted to mount their travelling carriages. They were preceded by a company of cuirassiers, admired for their lively horses of the Spanish type, followed by the legates' trumpeters, who were followed by the comrades of the numerous pages who held on the front of their saddles the valises covered with cloth of the same colour as their liveries. One courier, two trumpeters, two drummers were followed by the cardinals' saddle horses led by hand by their respective grooms, then came Their Eminences' gentlemen, who rode in pairs.
Marquis Riccardi smugly points out how much more distinguished the gentlemen of Cardinal de' Medici were than those of his colleague, and how all the first-ranking families were honoured to serve his most serene master; he names Don Paolo Francesco Falconieri, the Marquis Patrizzi, the Duke Salviati, the Marquis Andrea Corsini, the Duke Mattei, the Duke Lante, the Marquis Naro, and the Baron Mattei — all of whom wore Spanish-style clothes with very expensive lace.
After these appeared the prelates, the chamber masters, the Marquis Rinuccini, the Cavalier Baldeschi of the Queen's court, with their respective footmen.
Riccardi praises the liveries of the court of the Cardinal of Hesse, of crimson cloth trimmed with velvet with some silver fillets, but says the Medici liveries were richer and, of course, more bizarre due to the quantity of gold braid with which they were covered. He also observes that the German cardinal had rented everything "with little pomp but with great cleanliness".
After two groups of five carriages belonging to the cardinal-legates with their respective pages on foot, the grooms and the lancie spezzate, the procession was closed by thirty-six carriages pulled by six horses belonging to the gentlemen and the prelates.
A short distance from the Storta, a very rich carriage of the Queen lined in deep blue, served by footmen wearing liveries of the same colour, came towards it. From this carriage, Don Antonio de la Cueva, the grand equerry, descended to bow to Their Eminences, who agreed to take a seat in the same, to return in his company to the Casale degli Olgiati.
As soon as Her Majesty was informed of their arrival, she met them on the stairs, and giving them an arm, she returned to her rooms to receive the studied compliment in the name of His Holiness. After the brief ceremony, the cardinals accompanied the Queen to the carriage, in which they themselves took their places.
The procession set off on the road again, directly for Rome.
Once they reached the city, since this entrance was private, they went outside the walls and entered through the Porta Pertusa into the public garden, located at the highest point of the Vatican.
Emperor Charles V had passed through this gate, after which it had been walled up. Now it was reopened, in honour of the great Queen.
At the entrance to the Apostolic Palace, the august woman was received by His Holiness' majordomo, surrounded by the entire papal court.
The legates, having changed into their travelling clothes and put on their large cloaks, conducted her to the Pontiff's apartment.
At the entrance to this was ready a master of ceremonies, who introduced her through several rooms where the most distinguished figures of Roman society were found. In the presence of the Holy Father, Her Majesty bowed three times; and, she having kissed his foot and hand, he lifted her up and invited her to sit to the right of the predella on a crimson velvet chair without armrests. The brief conversation was very cordial. The Pope's face was radiant with consolation.
After the ceremony in the presence of the court, Alexander VII retired to his cabinet, where he invited Kristina to a long conversation to which only the two Jesuits, their confessors, were admitted. When he had dismissed the august guest, she was accompanied to the quarters assigned to her, followed by the entire court. Shortly afterwards His Holiness went to return her visit, as is customary among sovereigns.
Cardinal de' Medici, returning to his palazzo, told his gentlemen that he had found in this princess a woman endowed with great wit, very courteous, who spoke well; and above all, he had been surprised by her knowledge of so many languages, among which she spoke Italian with a perfect Tuscan accent — "something that is marvellous", added His Eminence, "in someone born in such a foreign and barbaric climate".
He also said that after the papal audience the Queen had told him that she had realised that she had spoken too little and too interruptedly "because she had been terrified by that venerable Majesty".
The same Cardinal wrote to his father, the Grand Duke, that Kristina "had barely known how to utter a word, and yet she had given proof of herself in this kind, and it had never occurred to her to have the slightest fear. In short, one can see that she is refined and very mischievous, if it is permissible to use this phrase."
Kristina was not a woman to be so easily moved, both by character and by the habit of royal receptions, but she knew how to say, when she wanted, and always it suited her — pleasant things. This remark thrown out there was very appropriate because she calculated that when it was reported to Alexander VII, he would feel his vanity roused.
Meanwhile, the Pope assigned her a thousand scudi a day as a pension for three months. The first act of his generous donations in favour of this princess because she represented marvellously the role of convert, while thousands of poor people were dying, victims of the plague and hunger.
