The account:

IV.

English translation (my own):

IV. Queen Kristina in Hamburg in 1654.
Various accounts in the literature (e.g., in Arckenholtz, Mémoires concernant Christine, I, Amsterdam and Leipzig, 1751, pp. 450 ff.) document Queen Kristina's stay in Hamburg during her departure from Sweden in 1654. Detailed and reliable information is available in the dispatches of the imperial resident von Plettenberg — dispatches that are also of considerable political interest — which were published in Historisk Tidskrift in 1884 (Bref upplysande svenska historien, pp. 347 ff.). Of a different nature are the communications printed below, sent by a diplomat from Danzig — then staying in Lübeck — to a friend in his home city (Originals among Acta internuntiorum LXXXIX in the State Archives in Danzig); these reflect the contemporary gossip circulating in Hanseatic civic circles and provide some rather vivid details regarding the Queen's outward demeanour — details that are, in their main outlines, corroborated by other sources. For the sake of comparison, it is also of interest to examine an account from the Swedish side: the letter from Baron Carl Soop to King Karl X Gustav, which is likewise reproduced here (Original in the National Archives [Riksarkivet] among Bref till konung Karl X Gustav.).

Above: Kristina.

Note: Danzig is the German name for what is now the Polish city of Gdańsk.
