The account:

LA REGINA CRISTINA DI SVEZIA IN ROMA.

IV.

English translation (my own):

QUEEN KRISTINA OF SWEDEN IN ROME.

IV.
The Jesuit Fathers and Count Pimentel had succeeded in bringing Kristina to Innsbruck and in having her completely reform the personnel of her court, dismissing the Lutheran Swedes and admitting Catholics.

When Don Antonio de la Cueva, lieutenant general of the cavalry in Flanders, fell ill, he was replaced in the office of majordomo by Count Raimondo Montecuccoli, Austrian general of the cavalry, who was destined to accompany Her Majesty to Rome.

Alexander VII, eager to complete the conversion of this Queen, wanted to ensure it with a public and solemn act and sent the Jesuit Malines to meet her in Innsbruck to announce to Her Majesty the imminent arrival of a special papal envoy to receive her abjuration in the person of Monsignor Lucas Holstenius, Canon of St. Peter's, first custodian of the Vatican Library.

This man, given his merits, was truly the most suitable; a very learned theologian, born in Hamburg, who had lived among the Lutherans, he knew more than anyone else the dogmatic controversies that were raging in those times of furious religious struggle.

On November 4, 1654 [sic] the function took place in the archducal church of the Minor Observants in the presence of Archduke Friedrich [sic], his wife Anna de' Medici, Archduke Sigismund, Count Pimentel and numerous courtiers.

Meanwhile, in Rome, the news was circulating that the Queen of Sweden, who had converted to Catholicism, was to come to receive the Pope's benediction. It was known that Alexander VII, considering it a very fortunate event, a true triumph of religion during his pontificate, wanted her to be received with the greatest pomp.

The Jesuits had assured the Pope that Kristina's example of making herself Catholic would be followed by the principal Swedish families, and then by the entire population. The certainty of this success decided the Pontiff to take on the heavy expense of celebrating the Queen's conversion with such fanfare.

The public criticised the heavy expenses that the Apostolic Chamber would have to face in the sad times that were going on. The plague was manifesting itself here and there, causing thousands of victims, with well-founded fear that the frightening calamity would have spread throughout the Ecclesiastical State, and in Rome itself. The famine was ever more terrible. The poor were dying of hunger; to this must be added the scourge of war that required sacrifices of men and money.

To the famine some opposed the advantages that would result from the large amount of money spent by private individuals, which would be collected by the indigent class. Others, says the historiographer Pallavicino, argued more scientifically by saying "all the doctrines of theologians and canonists about the honest or dishonest distribution of ecclesiastical revenues are founded in this, that they must be used according to the presumed will of the donors. Given this, let us pretend that Charlemagne, Matilda, and all those princes who have enriched the Roman Church with so many great possessions and jurisdictions had asked themselves if they intended the revenues of this to be applied in treating honourably a certain Queen, who had preferred being a subject of this church to being a queen, who is so stupid as to be hesitant in the answer? and does not see that they would have said that if everything were lacking, the Pontiff and the cardinal should reduce the expenses of their courts to convert them to this holy and magnificent use?"

That was the way they thought in the seventeenth century, and even much later, when people were considered a commodity that could be negotiated by conquerors, and as such legitimately donated, cut, and destroyed, according to their own interests. It was then a slogan invented by the Jesuits to maintain that the Queen had preferred to become Catholic rather than be queen. The Jesuits, who had put together this whole machine, knew better than the public how things stood.

The Venetians, minding their own particular interests, noted that the Pope should not spend money on celebrations when they were all threatened with being exterminated by the Turks.

The French, jealous of the Spanish influence in Rome, made the most lively protests.

Alexander VII, ignoring anyone's complaints, went on his way, giving the necessary arrangements for the reception of the holy Queen in his State and in Rome, so that it would be in the most solemn form.

A commission of monsignors was charged with studying a special ceremonial, which was to provide for everything, both in the Queen's relations with the Pope as well as with the cardinals, with the Roman baronage, in church, in the apartments, and in the street. This regulation presented some difficulties: celibate ecclesiastics had to receive a woman. Monsignor Febei was the speaker.

The main concern was where Her Majesty would lodge. The plan had been mooted to prepare a temporary apartment for her in the Palazzo Altemps in Piazza Fiammetta, from which it was proposed to build a covered bridge by which the Queen could go to hear mass in the church of Sant'Apollinare. But, the Pope's scruples having been overcome, it was decided to receive her in the Vatican for a few days, while the restoration work on the Palazzo Farnese was being completed, and specifically in the quarters of Innocent VIII at the Torre de' Venti overlooking the Belvedere gardens near the library. The work of reduction was undertaken, working day and night, until the holidays.

The ceilings were painted and gilded again, some partitions that divided the rooms were demolished, and a new gallery was also built. The entire area was covered with tapestries, fabrics, and very rich brocades, partly lent by Prince Borghese and other great houses of the Roman aristocracy. Everyone competed in providing their valuable furniture to honour this Queen. They also thought of asking Prince Borghese to organise a private hunt for her on the Mentana estate.

The Pope bought a superb horse from Don Paolo Francesco Falconieri for thirty pistoles, which he intended for the Queen on the day of her triumphal entry into Rome.

He called the cavaliere Bernini and ordered the drawings of a carriage, a litter and a carved chair, with statuettes and ornaments carved in silver: they were to be the linings of light blue velvet. The commission was given with the condition that there was no intention of limiting the expense, when it was a question of a gift to be offered to the Queen.

Alexander VII visited the works on the apartment with the greatest satisfaction.

All the princes and princesses were in great preparation for new clothes, new carriages, liveries, harnesses; horses were being purchased, real treasures were being lavished for the happy occasion.

The Duke de Terranova, minister of Spain, took from the shops of Rome as much velvet as he could find, but since it was not enough, Prince Borghese gave him the tapestry of a room which by chance was of the same velvet. It would be long to say what and how many were the preparations that are described here and there, it is only useful to remember that in Rome they worked continuously for six months on the same.

One of the preparations that most concerned him was the reception. The Pope would have desired the entire Sacred College of Cardinals to go to meet the Queen, but, finding some opposition, he limited himself to nominating on August 23 two cardinals with the qualities of apostolic legates, with the task of going to Casale Olgiati not far from Storta; from there they would accompany her to the Vatican.

These designated cardinals were from princely houses, namely Giovancarlo de' Medici, and Friedrich, Landgrave of Hesse. The ladies invited to serve Her Majesty in Rome were the Princess Branciforte di Butera, the Princess of Rossano, and Donna Anna Maria Aldobrandini, Duchess of Ceri.

A lady from Ferrara was invited to go to the border of the State to receive Her Majesty and accompany her to Rome; this was Costanza, the daughter of Alessandro Sforza, Count of Santa Fiora, married to the Marquis Cornelio Bentivoglio of Ferrara.

Four prelates with the quality of apostolic nuncios were charged with being at the borders of the Ecclesiastical State to receive, greet and serve Her Majesty; three of these were Annibale Bentivoglio, Archbishop of Thebes, Luca Torrigiani, Archbishop of Ravenna, and Monsignor Alessandro Cesarini, Governor of Rimini.

In Rome, where satire has always been ready, it was said that these prelates must have been chosen as orators, not companions, since they had bad legs.

Together with the news of the solemn abjuration, it was learned that the Queen expected to arrive in Rome on around December 20, provided that she did not encounter any difficulties on the part of the Venetians, who were little inclined to give her the go-ahead.

Although the Jesuits had tried, by inventing their own apologetic biography of this princess, very different from the truth, to bring public opinion to conceive the greatest admiration for their work and were sure of the success of a triumphal reception wherever their heroine appeared, they had not succeeded in preventing, especially in Rome, the doubts about the truth, that her conduct was virtuous; so that, in spite of these preparations, she was awaited with much curiosity, but with little credit, especially knowing that she had little money. There was also no lack of those who warned not to be surprised with requests for loans, of little probability of repayment.

It must be said that only the Pope was delighted for the felicity that was reserved for him, to bless in this converted Queen one of the greatest glories of Catholicism after so much bitterness.

Among the last but important provisions to be made, it was believed that all available soldiers who were in the Ecclesiastical States should be called to Rome, to serve on parade and at the same time to maintain order during the upcoming celebrations.

The first person from the Queen of Sweden's court to arrive in Rome was the Count Montecuccoli, who went to disembark at the Osteria delle Due Spade.

As soon as the Duke de Terranova was informed of this, considering him a Spanish envoy, he went to take him as his guest.

Montecuccoli took with him a large number of the Queen's footmen with their quartermaster. They wore a livery on which they bore a black cross, the same colour as their trimmings.

This steward of Her Majesty was the bearer of a letter that she wrote to the Pope, in Italian, dated November 5, — that is, the day after her abjuration [sic], — in which she protested her devotion to her new father, as she called him.

On November 31, Kristina entered the Ferrara area, after having received honours from the Prince-Bishop of Trento, from the Royal House of Savoy and from the Duke of Modena.

Eighteen miles from Ferrara, in the name of His Holiness, a carriage, a litter and a chair were presented to her, to serve her during the journey. It was here that she met the prelates with their numerous retinue of gentlemen and footmen, who, together with those of the Swedish court, formed a great crowd of people to be maintained at the expense of the Apostolic Chamber — that is, by the faithful subjects.

The celebrations she received in Bologna were grandiose, and detailed descriptions of them were published, with engravings to illustrate them, but it would be too long to even attempt to make a list of them, both of these and of the welcomes she received in all the cities of Romagna through which she passed.

She stopped in Imola, in Faenza, in Forlì, in Cesena, everywhere met by the cardinal legates, by the ecclesiastical authorities, with the usual cavalcades; she was offered banquets, given in the presence of the astonished population, balls where numerous ladies and gentlemen came. The cities were illuminated at night, festive as no one had ever remembered.

On December 2 she arrived in Rimini, where the entire citizenry was waiting for her. Two cardinals, one of whom was Acquaviva, accompanied by a number of nobles from Rimini, all on horseback, with very rich trappings had gone to meet her at the Rubicon.

A company of soldiers commanded by Captain Cattani led the march. From Celle to Sacramora, fifteen hundred soldiers were deployed. The Queen was mounted on an ermine horse, wearing a jacket of black velvet, with a Spanish hat of the same colour on her head. Fifty Swedish soldiers followed her. At the city gate, the magistrates on horseback, dressed in their robes, received her.

The Castello Malatestiano was firing cannon shots. The Piazza della Fontana was richly decorated. The chief consul, Annibale Nani, was at the Town Hall to receive the Queen.

In the Piazza della Fontana a group of allegorical statues to the abjuration had been erected. The main one of these had on its head a helmet with a torch in its hand, it was in the attitude of throwing itself against the hydra Lerma; at its feet it had a rooster.

The other two statues, one representing strength, the other wisdom. At one o'clock at night the larger statue was set on fire and moved three times towards the Hydra, when the torch began to catch fire, from which for an hour a quantity of mortars and rockets came out. The performance ended with the burning of the hydra.

Then the great hall was opened with a ball, which, both because of the large number of ladies of Rimini and the number of gentlemen, was a splendid success.

The next morning the Queen prepared to leave. The windows, the balconies of the palazzi and even the modest houses were covered with rich damasks. Thus Rimini, not second to the other cities, honoured the Nordic princess, who was surprised by such a celebration that a small city could have given her.

When Kristina entered Pesaro amidst the enthusiastic applause of the most fanatical welcome of the population, she was offered, as in other cities, banquets, concerts, and parties, where the most beautiful and witty ladies and the young men of the most distinguished families appeared. Among these, she was introduced to the brothers Francesco and Ludovico Santinelli, whom Her Majesty particularly admired during the ball. They were very uncouth young men, but strong, bold, gymnastic, very skilled in horseback riding, and renowned ball players. They had much nobility, little wealth, and many debts. The Queen wanted to have them at her court and invited them to follow her as gentlemen. She wanted to give Francesco the title of chamberlain, the second she appointed captain of her guard.

The first was granted a nominal salary of four thousand scudi, but because Her Majesty did not have enough money — indeed, one could say that her coffers were permanently empty, — Santinelli had to begin by selling the few possessions he had so as to support himself.

I have wanted to stop and talk about these young men because we will find them playing a very important, yet thankless, role in the unfolding of this story.

The Queen continued her journey to Fano, Ancona and up to Loreto, where she had a triumphal reception, being considered a champion of the faith. She wanted to climb up to the famous basilica on foot, and once inside, she prostrated herself before the sacred image. Then she handed over to the treasurer her crown and her scepter, jewelled objects of great value due to the very large diamonds with which both were adorned.

Having accomplished this act of devotion and accepted the celebrations that were made pleasing to her, she continued her journey to Macerata, Tolentino, Camerino and Foligno; nor did these cities give her a lesser welcome. For many years the memorable celebrations were remembered, the concerts in which the ladies of the most noble families sang, among these are remembered those who recited verses in honour of this holy Queen, which were published with the descriptions of the exultation of the fanatical populations.

She left Foligno to go to Assisi, wanting to kneel at the tomb of Saint Francis. Returning to Foligno she passed through Spoleto, and here there were new celebrations. In Gallese, in Caprarola, in Bracciano she was sovereignly hosted by the princes who bore the title of those castles, and had possession of them. Finally she approached the Casale degli Olgiati.
