The account:

VI.

English translation (my own):

VI.
Although the pompous reception with which Kristina of Sweden was welcomed in the Vatican seemed to have been quite solemn according to the customs of those times, she was, considering her as a heroine, owed a triumphal entry into Rome.

An edict published some time earlier ordered that the day on which this event would take place was to be considered a holy day of entire precept.

The inhabitants of the houses of those streets that the procession would have passed through had to adorn them according to their possibilities with the richest fabrics, tapestries and drapes. Truly the order was appreciated by the population, who responded in such a way that nothing more could be desired.

Trumpets and drums were sounding everywhere. The crowd in the streets, at the windows, on the balconies and on the stages erected for the occasion was enormous.

If it was arousing curiosity to see this holy woman who had preferred the Catholic faith to the royal crown, as everyone was saying, it was no less interesting to see the pomp that the papal court, the cardinals and the Roman princes would display after having spent several millions on six months of preparations.

On the morning of December 23, the governor of Rome, Monsignor Bonelli (great-nephew through the sister of Pope Pius V), left his palazzo riding a superb, richly caparisoned horse. He was preceded by some pages, two of whom carried his hat and baton. His Excellency had an escort of light cavalry, and eighty halberdiers in scarlet cassocks surrounded him.

Next came the togate officers of his tribunal, and a crowd of grooms.

This procession headed for the beginning of the Campidoglio ramparts, to await Senator Fausto Gallucci and the conservatives Onofrio Marsani, Giacinto del Bufalo, and Cesare Colonna; all wearing their gold brocade robes.

Even the senator's pageboys carried his hat, rapier and baton, and he had his own escort of light cavalry, trumpeters, knights bachelor, and servants in sumptuous liveries, a pompous and purely theatrical representation of the Senate and the Roman people.

A large group of Roman nobles followed, among whom I would like to mention Gian Rinaldo Monaldeschi, Lord of Cervaia and Monte Calvello, a member of the historic Orvieto family, who would die tragically. The two groups, having joined together, circled the walls and headed for the meadows outside the Porta Angelica, where they were to meet the Queen's cortège.

In the meantime, the two Cardinals de' Medici and Friedrich of Hesse, in their grand gala carriage, followed by the usual entourage of gentlemen, prelates and footmen, were heading towards the gates of the Vatican gardens to pick up the Queen, who, having descended from her apartments in the Belvedere courtyard, was getting into a very rich papal gala carriage entirely lined with wine-coloured velvet.

Kristina sat in the only armchair in this carriage, in the place of honour where the Pope sits, while the two cardinal legates sat in the seat in front.

Her Majesty was escorted by twenty-six guards on horseback and followed by a large number of gilded carriages, in which were the dignitaries of her court; the rest of her entourage were on horseback. This cortège, leaving through the Porta Angelica, headed for the Ponte Molle.

In the meadows, immediately outside the walls, a thousand soldiers had been deployed in embankments, with six cannons positioned at a distance, intended to pay military honours to the Queen with repeated shots.

As soon as Her Majesty appeared, the governor and the senator went to greet her, directing their discourses of homage, which were cut short by the rain, which was falling so heavily that it was advisable not to prolong the entertainment. The artillery salvos from Castel Sant'Angelo announced to Rome the departure of the cavalcade and the beginning of the feast.

The entire retinue arriving at Pope Julius' vineyard lined up to await the royal carriage, which stopped at the casino. Kristina alighted and was received by Monsignor Farnese, His Holiness's majordomo, and by the entire prelature and officials of the papal court, who accompanied her to the hall, where a sumptuous banquet was being prepared.

After offering the usual compliments in the name of His Holiness, Monsignor Farnese offered her, in his name, a richly caparisoned horse with a saddle, valance, and bridle covered in silver-embroidered velvet, begging her to make her solemn entry into Rome on this horse. He also presented her with the superb carriage, the litter, the chair with six beautiful horses, and the mules necessary for the other vehicles.

Without intending to delve into lengthy descriptions of these various art objects Alexander VII donated to her, I want to say that they were covered in ornaments and statues of solid silver, the most painstaking workmanship, directed and partly executed by the famous Bernini. These carriages were lined with the finest blue velvet with silver trimmings. The harnesses of the horses and mules were also draped in velvet trimmed with silver fringe; the buckles, bolts and bit studs were all masterfully crafted in silver.

At one o'clock in the afternoon, the great cavalcade, having been reorganised by the masters of ceremonies, set out toward Rome. It began with a company of cuirassiers of the Queen's guard in scarlet uniform with four black velvet crosses laced with gold braid.

After the cardinals' spare horses, led by hand, came their couriers and those of the Queen. Twelve carriages covered in crimson velvet cloths with gold braid and fringes trimmed with silver studs were pulled by mules.

The cardinals' aides, dressed in embroidered robes, preceded the great figures of the aristocracy, accompanied by their respective gentlemen and grooms: among the first were the two Colonnas, the Prince of Gallicano and the Prince of Carbognano, Sforza, Duke of Onano, Orsini, Prince of Nerula, his brother Don Lelio, the Dukes of Bussanello, the Savellis, Altemps, Caffarelli, Salviati with his two sons, the Dukes Strozzi, Lante, Cesi, Muti, Mattei, the Marquises Corsini, Spada del Drago, Astalli and other great lords from various Italian provinces.

This group was separated from the next, by the Capitoline drummers, the pageboys, the twenty-four barbers with silver masses, the twenty-four cardinals' train bearers. Then came Prior Lomellino, Senator Imperiali of Genoa, and Prince Camillo Pamphilj of Valmontone, much admired for his Spanish-style dress, studded with diamonds worth one hundred thousand scudi. On his hat he wore a plume secured with a stud of inestimable diamonds. He was followed by many gentlemen, twelve pages, all dressed in Spanish-style velvet trimmed with gold embroidery. After six lancie spezzate came thirty grooms. Then came other gentlemen: the Marquis of Monte Santa Maria, Count Ludovico Santinelli, Cavalier Baldeschi, the Marquises Malvezzi, Santacroce, Vecchiarelli, Cesi, Marescotti, and Count Raimondo Montecuccoli.

Barberini, Prince of Palestina, also stood out for his sequence of large diamond buttons, and he also wore a very expensive clasp. Brother Niccolò Barberini, Prior of Malta, was present, all attended by twenty footmen and eight pageboys dressed in richly decorated velvet. Then appeared Monsignor the governor and the senator with their respective entourages.

Kristina of Sweden mounted her horse, dressed in an ash grey justaucorps and petticoat, embroidered in gold, then known as the amore di Francia. A black mantlet hung from her shoulders, perhaps deliberately placed in order to hide her shoulder defect. Some say she wore a wide-brimmed hat with a gold cord, but Cardinal de' Medici recounted this anecdote in one of his letters.

During the journey, with rain constantly threatening, at one point when it actually looked like it would rain, the Cardinal remarked to the Queen that, since she was wearing only her wig, he advised her to cover herself better. So she called Montecuccoli, asked for his hat, plucked the feathers, arranged it on her head rather grotesquely, and continued on her way. I would believe this version to be more accurate due to the circumstance of being noticed by those around her.

Kristina actually rode like a woman, but few believed it, because her position was so upright that many doubted whether she could have one leg on the saddle fork and the other in the stirrup.

The young Marquis Ippolito Bentivoglio walked alongside the Queen, with whom he talked almost continuously during the journey.

The two cardinal legates, mounted on their superb horses, placed Kristina between them. Their respective courts, mingling indiscriminately, followed them. After the numerous papal family came the Palatine Swiss Guards and the light cavalry. Finally, four of Her Majesty's gilded carriages, drawn by six horses with long reins, were distinguished from the others by the royal coat of arms of three bunches of wheat crossed by two silver bands on an azure shield.

The coachmen and grooms wore scarlet liveries trimmed with black velvet and gold braid.

Then followed the no less rich carriages of the cardinal legates, the princes, the other lords and the gentlemen prelates, in such numbers that they continued to parade for a long time.

It must be remembered that at that time, although riding on horseback was considered much more dignified, especially for men, than riding in a carriage, it was common practice to receive a prince and even an ambassador with a number of carriages, of which there were from sixty to one hundred and fifty at each ceremony.

Outside the Porta Flaminia, not far from the Ponte Molle, numerous princesses and ladies of the Roman aristocracy were stationed in their carriages, awaiting the arrival of the royal cortège to greet Her Majesty. These carriages had been specially built for the occasion, each drawn by six highly prized horses, adorned with the most sumptuous harnesses. The carriages, admired for their astonishing opulence, were lined internally with gold-embroidered fabrics and an abundance of pearls, while the exteriors were covered with velvets of various colours.

In addition to her own carriage, each lady was followed by others from her court, surrounded by twenty-four footmen and twelve pageboys clad in velvet — in the colours of their respective houses — and so heavily embroidered with gold that each livery cost between five and six hundred scudi. Matching the opulence of the equipages were the princesses' incredibly costly gowns, adorned with diamonds, pearls and precious stones. It was estimated that the value of the finery worn by each princess ranged from four hundred to five hundred thousand scudi. Yet, the Princess Rossano surpassed them all, wearing attire valued at seven hundred thousand scudi.

These great families wanted to pay homage to the Queen, but at the same time show her their wealth. Once Her Majesty was greeted, the princesses' carriages took their places in the procession of this triumphal entry.

The Queen was very haughty with the Roman princesses, who would not have expected such a cold welcome after the expenses they had incurred; and from that moment they called her ungrateful and never had occasion to change their minds.

Bernini transformed the Porta Flaminia into a triumphal arch with statues, ornaments and allegorical bas-reliefs. An inscription read "Felici faustoque ornata ingressui anno [1655]", to remind posterity of the glorious event of the honours paid by the Supreme Pontiff to this Catholic queen.

As soon as they passed through the door, the entire Sacred College was lined up in fine order on horseback, all dressed in pontifical attire, in whose name Cardinal Barberini, as the dean, advancing towards Kristina, addressed a compliment to her.

The two cardinals Medici and Hesse left the Queen to take the place that was theirs by order and seniority among the members of the Sacred College because, having entered the city, their legation ceased, and they were replaced in the court service to Her Majesty by the two cardinal deacons, Orsini and Costaguti.

When the procession reached the Ponte Sant'Angelo, the castle's cannons fired. Arrived at the Vatican, the two cardinal deacons left her once again in the company of Medici and Sforza to ascend to the Consistory Hall, where the Pontiff had already entered, surrounded by his court, to receive her.

The Queen, surrounded by the cardinals, ascended the steps in front of the portico of St. Peter's, where she was received by the entire chapter and the clergy, with whom she entered the Basilica, which was entirely adorned with beautiful tapestries and a great quantity of gold and coloured fabrics. On this occasion, the most splendid illumination of thousands upon thousands of torches was witnessed: the sight was astonishing.

As soon as Kristina arrived at the tomb of the Apostles, the wind and string orchestras and the choir of singers began to sing the Veni Creator Spiritus. The service concluded with the Te Deum, accompanied by that famous concert of voices and instruments.

After finishing her prayers, the Queen rose and was escorted up the Basilica's internal staircase to the papal apartment. During the service, various prelates, accompanied by their monsignor majordomo, had arrived at the palace and were ready to receive her, along with eight bishops assisting at the papal chapel, the Duke of Guadagnolo, master of the Sacred Hospice, and the Cardinals Costaguti and Orsini.

When Her Majesty entered the presence of the Pope, she knelt three times, always advancing forward, so that at the last genuflection she found herself close to the throne and was thus able to kiss his foot and hand.

The consistory ceremony was brief. The Queen addressed His Holiness with a compliment of good wishes, alluding to the serene day (which had unexpectedly turned out thus), to which the Pope replied that it was a prognostication of an eternal day in Paradise; and he withdrew, blessing her.

She was served dinner shortly afterwards, after which His Holiness rose and six cardinal deacons accompanied the Queen to her quarters in the Torre dei Venti [the Tower of the Winds].

The next morning, Kristina rose from bed and strolled through the garden, entertaining those accompanying her with a discussion of the general and detailed artistic history of the art treasures contained in the Vatican. After being shown the residence of Monsignor Holstenius, she knocked on his door and asked him to get dressed and open the library for her.

The erudite prelate must have recognised the extraordinary, knowledgeable, varied and profound nature of her learning. Visiting the art gallery, she showed her knowledge of the value of the paintings and their celebrated artists and spoke with witty criticism of their style and the various schools to which they belonged — not surprising, considering the treasures she had lavished on her celebrated collections.

She received the cardinals, the prelature and the ladies in her apartment with all the etiquette of a queen. She often saw the Pope, to whom she paid the most respectful tribute, though she never forgot the dignity of her rank.

On Christmas morning, Alexander VII wished to administer the sacraments of Confirmation and Communion to her in the papal chapel. Cardinal de' Medici had been appointed as early as Christmas Eve to represent the King of Spain as godfather; it was on this occasion that His Holiness wished for the names Maria and Alexandra to be added to that of Kristina.

The Pope invited the august convert to luncheon that day in the room then used for sermons. At the head of the room two tables had been set up joined together, one lower than the other, but covered with the same tablecloth. The Pontiff sat at the higher table, on a large armchair, while the Queen sat at the lower one.

Here I want to note that such importance was given to the shape of the chair that Bernini had been commissioned to design a new model, which would not have the armrests and support to which only reigning sovereigns were entitled; but it could not even be a small stool like those of the cardinals, since Kristina was to be shown the respect due to an ex-queen, treated with particular distinction.

A large baldaquin covered the tables so that the Pope's chair was in the center and the Queen's little chair halfway outside. Her Majesty was served by her gentlemen, Don Antonio de la Cueva, Marchese Ippolito Bentivoglio, and Count Francesco Santinelli.

Every time His Holiness drank, the Queen did not stand up, but limited herself to bowing deeply to him.

During the luncheon, Father Oliva recited a panegyric about the Pope and the Queen, to which Her Majesty responded several times with surprising wit, showing her learning regarding the quotations she made from some passages by the Holy Fathers.

The Pope raised an affectionate toast to her, to which she responded with words of the most respectful devotion.

Yet Kristina always managed to find a touch of humour in the situation. Certain cheeses and fruits from Pistoia, gifted by Monsignor Rospigliosi, inspired her to propose a second toast; however, she checked herself in time, as etiquette forbade such a thing in the Pope's presence; and she resolved to offer her compliments to the prelate after the luncheon had ended.

Nor did the reception end with a lavish banquet, for that very evening, in the Vatican halls, dramas were performed; and there were concerts given by the Pope in honour of the Queen. A king of France could not have done more for an august guest.
