Nos Christina &c. &c. Celsissime Princeps, Consanguinee & Amice charissime, Cum adversa Franciæ, haud secus ac nostra, nos afficiant, non possumus quin horrore concutiamur, quod inclutum illud Regnum in tanto discrimine versari intelligamus. Nam præterquam quod ibi intestinis motibus omnia turbentur, etiam fores omnium vicinarium gentium odio ac libidini patere videntur. Hæc aliaque ejusdem generis volventes animo, alienum ab affectu nostro curaquæ salutis publicæ communisque fore duximus, nisi mediationem nostram ad conciliandas bonis rationibus partes dissidentes offerremus. Hanc operam nostram si gratam iis quorum interest, nec sine spe felicis eventus esse cognoverimus; non intermittemus, subinde ac de ea re edoctæ fuerimus propere per Legatum nostrum commodare. De cætero, cum D:o V:ra summa erga regem suum fide, insigni prudentia fortibusque factis satis superque testatum fecerit, quam bene Regi Patriæque suæ velit: in eadem ratione propositi perstituram D:nem V:m certo confidimus, annisuramque quantum in eadem situm est, ut tam desideratum & optabile illud bonam, pax & tranquillitas, fessis jam Europæ & Christiani Orbis rebus, Galliæ propediem redeat, quo per eam amicis suis proficua & adjumento, hostibus terrori, sibique ipsi solatio gloriæque esse possit. Hæc sua sponte meditantem Dilect:m V:m supervacaneum esse ducimus hortamentis nostris impellere; Deo eandem ex animo conmendantes, optimeque valere cupientes. Nous Christine &c. Sérénissime Prince, Cousin & très-cher Ami. Les malheurs de France ne nous touchant pas de moins près, que les notres propres; nous ne pouvons qu'être saisies d'horreur, en apprenant le grand péril où se trouve ce Roïaume illustre: tout y étant non seulement rempli de troubles intestins: mais aussi toutes les portes semblant y être ouvertes à la haine & à l'ambition de toutes les nations voisines. Or faisant réfléxion là-dessus & aux suites que tout cela pourroit entrainer; nous ne jugeons pas être éloigné de notre penchant & de notre soin pour le salut public & commun, si nous offrons notre médiation pour appaiser par de bons moïens les parties contraires. Si-tôt que nous soins ne seront pas désagréables à ceux que l'affaire regarde, & qu'il y aura apparence d'une heureuse issuë, nous ne manquerons pas, au prémier avertissement de notre ministre, de nous y prêter. Au reste comme Votre Dilection, par sa fidélité envers son Roi, par sa prudence distinguée & par ses grands exploits, a fait connoître, combien elle est portée pour son Roi & sa Patrie; nous nous assurons qu'Elle persistera dans ce même propos, & qu'elle se sera fort, autant qu'il est en Elle, qu'un Bien aussi grand & souhaitable que l'est la paix & le repos public, soit au plûtôt rendu à la France: les forces de l'Europe & du monde chrétien n'en étant déja que trop affoiblies. C'est par-là que V. D. deviendra d'autant plus utile à ses Amis & se rendra aussi redoutable à ses Ennemis en s'acquérant à soi-même de la consolation & de la gloire. Comme V. D. y fera par elle-même ses réfléxions; nous jugeons superflu de l'y pousser par nos exhortations. Nous la recommandons de bon cœur au Tout-puissant & lui souhaitons toute sorte de bien. We Kristina, etc.
Most Serene Prince, Cousin and very dear Friend,
The misfortunes of France touching Us no less closely than Our own, We can only be seized with horror when We learn of the great peril in which this illustrious kingdom is found, everything there being not only filled with internal troubles, but also all the doors seem to be open to the hatred and ambition of all neighbouring nations. Now, considering it and the consequences that all this could lead to, We do not judge to be removed from Our inclination and Our care for the public and common salvation, if We offer Our mediation to appease by good means the contrary parties. As soon as Our care is not disagreeable to those who are concerned with the matter, and as soon as there is an appearance of a fortunate outcome, We shall not fail, at the first warning of Our minister, to lend Ourselves to it. Moreover, as Your Lovingness, by your fidelity to your King, by your distinguished prudence and by your great exploits, has made known how much it you have borne for your King and your Country, We ensure that you will persist in this same matter, and that you will be strong, as much as you are in it, that a good as great and desirable as is the peace and the public rest is returned to France. The forces of Europe and the Christian world are already only too weakened. This is how Your Lovingness will become all the more useful to your friends and will also make yourself formidable to your enemies by acquiring consolation and glory for yourself. As Your Lovingness will make your own reflections there, We deem it superfluous to urge you to do so by Our exhortations. We wholeheartedly recommend you to the Almighty and wish you all the best.
