ESCE alla luce quel Massenzio, il cui nome forse sarebbe stato più chiaro, s'egli fusse vissuto negli antri più oscuri del Mondo; poiche immerso trà le Magie più nere, dominato da la propria Tirannide, dominaua, e tiranneggiaua Roma infelice. Nel presente Dramma, Augustissima Regina, si rappresentano, come Pittura in iscorcio i suoi fatti, e misfatti; e perche maggiormente risplendano si è pensato mettergli in paragone d'vn soggetto opposto, pieno di Religione, e di Eroiche Virtù: Però si è scritto sù la fronte del Libro il gran Nome di V. M., che per seguir Dio hà saputo con magnanimo rifiuto gettare i Scettri, e calpestar le Corone, dopo hauer con infinite Vittorie conquistato Prouincie, e Regni, che poi con la sua somma generosità, e giustitia dispensò à chi più le parue, all'hora maggiormente trionfante, quando (come quì Costantino) inalberò la Croce. Voici Maxence qui s'enfonce dans les ténèbres, lui dont le nom aurait sans doute été plus approprié s'il avait vécu dans les recoins les plus sombres du monde; car, plongé dans la magie la plus noire et dominé par sa propre tyrannie, il régna et tyrannisa la malheureuse Rome. Dans ce drame, très auguste reine, ses faits et ses méfaits sont représentés comme dans une peinture en raccourci; et, pour les faire ressortir encore davantage, on a choisi de le comparer et de l'opposer à un sujet opposé, plein de piété et de vertus héroïques.
Cependant, le grand nom de Votre Majesté est inscrit en tête de cet ouvrage, elle qui, pour suivre Dieu, a su renoncer avec magnanimité aux sceptres et fouler aux pieds les couronnes après avoir conquis des provinces et des royaumes par d'innombrables victoires, que elle a ensuite, avec sa suprême générosité et sa justice, accordées à ceux qu'elle juge dignes, triomphant ainsi plus glorieusement encore lorsque (comme Constantin ici) elle a élevé la Croix. Där träder Maxentius fram i ljuset, vars namn kanske hade varit mer passande om han hade levt i världens mörkaste vrår; ty, nedsänkt i den svartaste magi, dominerad av sin egen tyranni, härskade och tyranniserade han över det olyckliga Rom. I detta drama, durchlauchtigaste drottning, framställs hans gärningar och missgärningar, som i en förkortad målning; och för att få dem att lysa fram ännu starkare har man tänkt sig att jämföra honom med en motsatt karaktär, full av religion och heroiska dygder.
Emellertid har Ers Majestäts stora namn inskrivits längst fram i denna bok, Ni som, för att följa Gud, har vetat hur Ni skulle storsint avstå från spiror och trampa ner kronor efter att ha erövrat provinser och kungadömen med oändliga segrar, vilka Ni sedan, med Er högsta generositet och rättvisa, skänkte vem Ni än ansåg värdig, och därmed segrade ännu större när Ni (liksom Konstantin här) reste Korset. There goes into the light Maxentius, whose name perhaps would have been more fitting had he lived in the darkest corners of the world; for, immersed in the blackest magic, dominated by his own tyranny, he ruled and tyrannised over unhappy Rome. In this drama, Most August Queen, his deeds and misdeeds are represented, as in a foreshortened painting; and, to make them shine forth even more brightly, one has thought to compare and contrast him with an opposite character, full of religion and heroic virtues.
However, the great name of Your Majesty has been inscribed at the front of this book, you who, in order to follow God, have known how to magnanimously give up scepters and trample crowns after having conquered provinces and kingdoms with infinite victories, which you then, with your supreme generosity and justice, bestowed upon whomever you deemed worthy, thus triumphing even more greatly when (like Constantine here) you raised the Cross. I humbly beg Your Majesty to honour this work with your protection and to accept the acts of my respect, with which I profoundly bow to Your Majesty. Rome, December 23, 1673.
