I det svenska folkkynnet är konungsligheten ett särdrag. Allt som rör kungahuset nu eller i gången tid, kan påräkna intresse från svenskens sida. Huru sysselsätter sig icke även den enkla allmogemannens fantasi i våra dagar med gestalter sådana som Gustav Vasa, Erik XIV, Gustav II Adolf, Karl XII o. a.

En liknande personlighet i den svenska historien är den store Gustav Adolfs dotter, hon som övergav den tro, för vilken hennes fader offrat sitt liv, och slöt sig till påvekyrkan. Drottning Kristina som Sveriges regent och som den i Europa kringflackande furstinnan utan land har givit ett rikligt stoff både för romandiktarens fantasi och vetenskapsmannens lärda mödor.

En av Sveriges främsta historiker professor Curt Weibull, som ägnat Kristinas liv ingående forskningar, har berikat litteraturen om drottningens i många avseenden hemlighetsfulla livsförlopp med undersökningen om en viktig händelse i hennes levnad. Han har velat klarlägga tillgången av och orsaken till avlivandet av en av drottningens gunstlingar markisen Gian Rinaldo Monaldesco, för vilket Kristina med rätta gjorts ansvarig. För den som önskar få en levande bild av det politiska livet ute i Europa under Ludvig XIV:s och kardinal Mazarins tidevarv erbjuder sig här ett utsökt tillfälle. Vi få följa med det intrigspel denna världens store bedrevo i mitten av 1600-talet och huru den svenska drottningen med liv och lust deltog däri. Det är ett fängslande skådespel, som upprullar sig för läsarens ögon, icke minst till den del där författaren visar huru avrättningen av den förrädiska gunstlingen av senare tiders skriftställare och forskare givits sken av slutet på en kärlekshistoria mellan Kristina och Monaldesco. Det ligger utom anmälarens kompetens att bedöma hållbarheten av de slutsatser, vartill prof. Weibull kommit, det vill säga att den avrättade förrått planerna på ett anfall mot Neapel, vilka skulle hava till slutmål drottningens upphöjelse på det syditalienska rikets tron, men själva skildringen som sådan lämnar intet övrigt i fråga om klarhet, så långt det överhuvudtaget är möjligt, när det gäller ett tidsskede då ordens främsta uppgift i det politiska intrigspelet var att vilseleda motståndarna.

Alltnog, professor Weibulls undersökning om ”Drottning Christina och Monaldesco” är ett arbete, som bör läsas av varje person, som intresserar sig för ”fröken Kerstins” levnadslopp. I mycket är det en äreräddning för den svenska drottningen.

In the disposition of the Swedish people, royalty is a distinctive feature. Everything that concerns the royal house, now or in the past, can be expected to interest the Swede. How does not even the imagination of the simple commoner occupy itself in our days with figures such as Gustav Vasa, Erik XIV, Gustav II Adolf, Karl XII, etc.

A similar figure in Swedish history is the great Gustav Adolf's daughter, who abandoned the faith for which her father had sacrificed his life and joined the Popish Church. Queen Kristina, as ruler of Sweden and as the princess without a country, wandering in Europe, has provided abundant material both for the imagination of the novelist and the learned labours of the scientist.

One of Sweden's foremost historians, Professor Curt Weibull, who has devoted extensive research to Kristina's life, has enriched the literature on the Queen's in many respects mysterious life course with the investigation of an important event in her life. He has wanted to clarify the availability of and the reason for the killing of one of the Queen's favourites, the Marquis Gian Rinaldo Monaldesco, for which Kristina has rightly been made responsible. For those who wish to get a vivid picture of political life in Europe during the era of Louis XIV and Cardinal Mazarin, this is an excellent opportunity. We get to follow the intrigue of this world's great enterprise in the middle of the 17th century and how the Swedish Queen participated in it with life and desire. It is a captivating spectacle that unfolds before the reader's eyes, not least in the part where the author shows how the execution of the treacherous favourite has been given the appearance by later writers and scholars of the end of a love story between Kristina and Monaldesco. It is beyond the competence of the reporter to judge the validity of the conclusions reached by Professor Weibull, that is, that the executed man betrayed the plans for an attack on Naples, which would have as their ultimate goal the Queen's elevation to the throne of the southern Italian kingdom, but the description itself as such leaves nothing to be desired in terms of clarity, as far as is at all possible, when it comes to a period when the main task of words in the game of political intrigue was to mislead opponents.

All in all, Professor Weibull's study of "Drottning Christina och Monaldesco" is a work that should be read by anyone interested in the life of "Lady Kerstin." In many ways it is a vindication of the Swedish Queen.
