Diogenes Laërtius scribit de docto ille viro Anisthene, quod singulis diebus ex Pyræo, ubi habitaverat, ascenderat Athenas 40. stadia ad audiendum Socratem. Hâc tempestate multi ægrè ferunt tot vestigia conficere ad lectionem eruditi viri audiendam: quod indicium est, sapientiam & artem indiès labefactam, & de die in diem barbariem magis magisve irruere.
French translation (my own):
Diogène Laërce écrit de ce savant Anisthène, que chaque jour il montait à Athènes à 40 stadia du Pirée, où il vivait, pour entendre Socrate: «Dans cette tempête, beaucoup se hâtent de faire tant de pas pour écouter la conférence d'un homme savant, ce qui est une indication que la sagesse et l'art sont constamment minés, et que la barbarie se précipite de plus en plus de jour en jour.»
Swedish translation (my own):
Diogenes Laërtius skriver om den lärde mannen Anisthenes, att han varje dag gick upp till Aten 40 stadia från Piraeus, där han bodde, för att höra Sokrates: »I denna storm skyndar många att ta så många steg för att lyssna på föreläsningen av en lärd människa, vilket är en indikation på att visdom och konst ständigt undergrävs, och att barbariet rusar in mer och mer från dag till dag.«
English translation (my own):
Diogenes Laërtius writes of that learned man Anisthenes, that every day he went up to Athens 40 stadia from Piraeus, where he lived, to hear Socrates: "In this storm, many are hastening to make so many steps to listen to the lecture of a learned man, which is an indication that wisdom and art are constantly being undermined, and that barbarism is rushing in more and more from day to day."
