"J'ai deux lettres de ce Roi à Oxenstierna à ce sujet. L'une est du 21. Juillet & l'autre du 1. Août 1632. Il se trouve aussi dans les Régîtres du Sénat (*V. Les Maximes Polit. du Palmsköld ad ann. 1636. p. 434. & 435. item ad ann. 1641. p. 466.*) qu'avant qu'il partît pour son expédition d'Allemagne, il recommanda au Sénat, en de termes fort pressans, de ne pas permettre, qu'en cas de mort, la Reine prît part aux affaires du Gouvernement .... Puffendorf dit tout net: 'La Reine Douairière étoit incapable d'affaires, toujours plaintive, & qui haïssoit le Païs & la Nation. On ne jugea pas non plus à propos de lui confier l'éducation de sa fille, de crainte qu'elle ne lui inspirât son aversion pour la Suède, & qu'elle ne voulût la marier à quelque Prince puissant, qui pourroit n'être pas agréable au Sénat' (*V. "I have two letters from this King to Oxenstierna on this subject. One is dated July 21, and the other August 1, 1632. It is also recorded in the Registers of the Senate (See Palmskiöld's Political Maxims, ad annum 1636, pp. 434-435; likewise ad annum 1641, p. 466.) that, before departing for his German expedition, he urged the Senate — in very emphatic terms — not to permit the Queen to take any part in government affairs in the event of his death .... Pufendorf states quite plainly: 'The Dowager Queen was incapable of affairs, always plaintive, and hated both the country and the nation. Nor was it deemed advisable to entrust her with her daughter's education, for fear that she might instill in her her own aversion to Sweden, or that she might seek to marry her to some powerful prince who might not be agreeable to the Senate' (See Mémoires de Christine, vol. Au château, nul individu suspect ne peut être admis, et l'on n'y trouve pour l'essentiel que des soldats suédois; je m'en remets toutefois à vous pour agir comme l'exige la sécurité. J'ai écrit à Sa Dilection pour qu'elle se conforme à vos conseils; j'espère vivement qu'elle le voudra et qu'elle le fera. Que Dieu, qui seul est bon, nous prenne tous sous sa sainte protection et nous accorde ce qui est utile et salutaire, tant pour le corps que pour l'âme! Je suis bien enclin à vous avec toute ma grâce et tout ce qui est bon.

... My wife would be best in Würzburg at the castle; Königshofen would be good, but since there are burghers there who are Papists, they can't be trusted. At the castle one cannot let anyone in who is suspicious, and there are mostly Swedish soldiers there; however, I trust you to do as security requires. I have written to Her Lovingness that she would obey your advice; I hope she wants to and will do so. May God, who alone is good, take us all under His holy protection and grant us what is useful and blessed for body and soul! I am well inclined to you with grace and all that is good.
