Protocoll hollet i Rådet och conferencerne medh Ständernes uthskåt öfver hans F. Dhtz Hertigz Carlls Gustafs Pfaltzgrefvens succession till rijket.
Anno 1649 den 23 Februarij var Hennes Kongl. Maij:t in Senatu sampt Feltherren, Rijckz-Ammiralen, Rijckz-Skattmästaren, Her Gustaf Horn, Her Matthias Soop, Her Åke Axelsson, Her Erich Ryning, Her Cnut Posse, Her Lars Kagg, Her Fridrich Steenbock, Her Thuro Sparre, Her Erich Gyllenstierna, Her Sevedh Bååt, Her Bengt Skytte, Her Åke Hansson Ulfsparre.
Tå proponerade H:s K. M:t och refererade, at Ständerne hade dagen tillförenne genom ett starckt uthskåt låtet föredraga H:s K. M:t tu tingh: 1. om chröningen, at den snart motte gå för sigh; theropå H. M:t hade svarat, at den väl kunde fram på sommaren eller emoot hösten nå sin fort- och framgångh. 2. Det andra var om giftermåhlet, att H. K. M:t dertill ville medh det första förstå; hvilcken saak var af stoor importance, och derföre hade H. M:t taget den ad communicandum medh Rijckzens Rådh; men allenast hade fördt medh uthskåtet häröfver nogre discurser. Dee hade och förehollet H. M:t sit löfte, giordt på sidste Rijckzdagh om Hertigh Carll; det H. M:t dem inthet så præcise eller absolute ville bestå, uthan var allenast tå talat af H. M:t vilkohrligen, at om H. M:t thertill skulle resolvera, ville tå H. M:t kasta sitt afseende på Hertigh Carll Pfaltzgrefven och ingen annan. Men efter Stendernes uthskått mäst drefve opå rijckzens interesse och säkerheet, och een villevalla, som lätteligen kunne endstå, ther H. M:t lade sina ögon igen uthan lijfzerfvinge[r] och successore till Chronan, ty badh H. M:t Rijckzens Rådh, dee ville betrachta och öfverväga denne saken icke allenast såsom Rijckzrådh, uthan och såsom vänner; och kommo saken mäst på tvenne tingh och quæstioner uth: 1. Om giftermåhlet vore ett medell till at försäkra rijket på viss erfvinge. 2. Hade H. M:t tänckt opå ett annat förslagh, om icke Pfaltzgrefven Hertigh Carll vore at declarera för rijckzens arffurste och nämbna till successorem, ther H. M:t kommo nogot dödeliget vidh. Hvilcket nu skulle mehre befordra rijckzens bästa, thet stälte H. M:t till Rådets gode betänckiande.
Deropå taaltes Rijckzens Rådh nogot vidh och sedan genom Feltherren läthe betacka H. M:t underdånligen för den nådige och förtrogne communication i een saak, som är af stoor consideration, och som angår H. M:ts egen höga persohn, så och rijket och alle Ständerne i gemehn och i synnerheet. Voro fuller deres plicht att säija häri sin meeningh, men kunde inthet så hastigt det giöra, begärade derföre nogen lijten dilation.
Kongl. M:t sade sigh väll kunne tänckia, at dee kunde i een sådan hastigheet sigh deröfver icke förklara, men meente nu väll kunne ventileres och discurreres öfver. H. M:t hade fuller uthlåtet sigh emoot Ständerne at vele häröfver deliberera medh Rijckzens Rådh. Och hvadh H. M:t hade medh them taalat, det hade H. M:t alt vilckohrligen talat, så frampt Rijckzens Rådh det känne gott. Kommo nogon olycka opå af incertitudine successoris, tå sijr K. M:t icke, huru H. M:t kan liberera sit samveet, medh mindre at H. M:t communiceradhe denne saken medh Rijckzens Rådh och giorde häri een vissheet. Hade sagt Ständerne dagen tillförenne, som altijdh förr, at H. M:t täncker opå ingen at taga ähn Hertigh Carll, som hade giordt sigh af Chronan högt meriteradt, och icke opå nogon tysk och fremmadh furste, där H. M:t elliest skulle tänckia till giffta sigh. Gifftermåhlet sätter H. M:t à part och till sin tijdh och kan sigh ännu deröfver eenkannerligen icke förklara.
Feltherren meente denne vara een ny deliberation ifrån den förre saken, som i fiohl var aftalt om giftermåhlet. Ty thette vore såsom ett halft vahl, ther man skulle taga Hertigh Carll till arffurste i rijket, och komme vij nu på een annan familiam; ty endogh Hertigh Carll ähr på mödernet af Gustaviana familia, så är H. F. N:de lickväll inthet af fädernet. Derföre badh han på dee andras vägnar, at dee måtte få dilation till betänckia sigh, och kunde dee inthet i H. M:ts præsentie så fullkombligen uthlåta sigh som elliest. Så vore och denne een saak, som icke allenast toucherade Rijckzens Rådh, uthan jämväll alle ständer, höge och låge, fattige och rijke.
H. M:t lät sigh det behaga och gick thermedh uthur Rådet opp i sin cammar, men badh Rijcksens Rådh, at dee inthet ville denne resan skillias åth, förr än dee hade taget denne saken i godh och noga deliberation.
Deropå togo Rickzens Rådh saken ad deliberandum och endtligen gingo sielfve opp och sade H. M:t deres betänckiande; och sedan effter middagen opå K. M:ts befalningh communicerade saken medh Rijckz-Cantzleren, Her Carll Bonde och Grefve Linnardt Torstensson.

Då proponerade Hennes Kungliga Majestät och refererade att Ständerna hade dagen tillförne genom ett starkt utskott låtit föredraga Hennes Kungliga Majestät tu ting: 1. om kröningen, att den snart måtte gå för sig; däruppå Hennes Majestät hade svarat att den väl kunde fram på sommaren eller emot hösten nå sin fort- och framgång.
2. Det andra var om giftermålet, att Hennes Kungliga Majestät därtill ville med det första förstå, vilken sak var av stor importans, och därföre hade Hennes Majestät tagit den ad communicandum med Riksens Råd, men allenast hade fört med utskottet häröver några diskurser.
De hade ock förehållit Hennes Majestät sitt löfte gjort på siste Riksdag om hertig Karl; det Hennes Majestät dem inte så præcise eller absolute ville bestå, utan var allenast då talat av Hennes Majestät villkorligen att om Hennes Majestät därtill skulle resolvera, ville då Hennes Majestät kasta sitt avseende på hertig Karl, pfalzgreven, och ingen annan.
Men efter Ständernas utskott mest drevo uppå riksens intresse och säkerhet och en villervalla som lätteligen kunne entstå där Hennes Majestät lade sina ögon igen utan livsärvingar och successore till Kronan, ty bad Hennes Majestät Riksens Råd de ville betrakta och överväga denna saken icke allenast såsom riksråd, utan ock såsom vänner; och komme saken mest på tvenne ting och kvestioner ut:
1. Om giftermålet vore ett medel till att försäkra riket på viss ärvinge.
2. Hade Hennes Majestät tänkt uppå ett annat förslag, om icke pfalzgreven hertig Karl vore att deklarera för Riksens arvfurste och nämna till successorem där Hennes Majestät komme något dödligt vid, vilket nu skulle mera befordra Riksens bästa; det ställte Hennes Majestät till Rådets goda betänkande.
Däruppå taltes Riksens Råd något vid och sedan genom fältherren läto betacka Hennes Majestät underdånligen för den nådiga och förtrogna kommunikation i en sak som är av stor konsideration och som angår Hennes Majestäts egen höga person, så ock riket och alla Ständerna i gemen och i synnerhet. Vore fuller deras plikt att säga häri sin mening, men kunde inte så hastigt det göra; begärade därföre någon liten dilation.
Kungliga Majestät sade sig väl kunna tänka att de kunde i en sådan hastighet sig däröver icke förklara, men mente nu väl kunna ventileras och diskurreras över. Hennes Majestät hade fuller utlåtit sig emot Ständerna att vilja häröver deliberera med Riksens Råd; och vad Hennes Majestät hade med dem talat, det hade Hennes Majestät allt villkorligen talat såframt Riksens Råd det känne gott.
Komme någon olycka uppå av incertitudine successoris, då ser Kungliga Majestät icke huru Hennes Majestät kan liberera sitt samvete med mindre att Hennes Majestät kommunicerade denna saken med Riksens Råd och gjorde häri en visshet. Hade sagt Ständerna dagen tillförne, som alltid förr, att Hennes Majestät tänker uppå ingen att taga än hertig Karl, som hade gjort sig av Kronan högt meriterad, och icke uppå någon tysk och främmad furste, där Hennes Majestät eljest skulle tänka till gifta sig. Giftermålet sätter Hennes Majestät à part och till sin tid och kan sig ännu däröver enkannerligen icke förklara.
Fältherren mente denna vara en ny deliberation ifrån den förra saken som ifjol var avtalt om giftermålet, ty detta vore såsom ett halvt val där man skulle taga hertig Karl till arvfurste i riket och komme vi nu på en annan familiam; ty, ändock hertig Karl är på mödernet av Gustaviana familia, så är Hans Furstliga Nåde likväl inte av fädernet.
Därföre bad han på de andras vägnar att de måtte få dilation till betänka sig, och kunde de inte i Hennes Majestäts presentie så fullkomligen utlåta sig som eljest. Så vore ock denna en sak som icke allenast toucherade Riksens Råd, utan jämväl alla Ständer, höga och låga, fattiga och rika.
Hennes Majestät lät sig det behaga och gick därmed utur Rådet upp i sin kammare, men bad Riksens Råd att de inte ville denne resan skiljas åt förrän de hade tagit denna saken i god och noga deliberation.
Däruppå togo Riksens Råd saken ad deliberandum och äntligen gingo själva upp och sade Hennes Majestät deras betänkande och sedan eftermiddagen uppå Kungliga Majestäts befallning kommunicerade saken med Rikskanslern, herr Carl Bonde och greve Lennart Torstensson.

Protocole tenu au Conseil et aux conférences avec le comité des États sur la succession de Sa Sérénité le duc Charles-Gustave, comte palatin, au royaume.
Le 23 février 1649, Sa Majesté Royale était au Sénat avec le feldmaréchal, le grand amiral, le grand trésorier, M. Gustave Horn, M. Matthias Soop, M. Åke Axelsson, M. Éric Ryning, M. Canut Posse, M. Laurent Kagg, M. Frédéric Stenbock, M. Thure Sparre, M. Éric Gyllenstierna, M. Seved Bååth, M. Benoît Skytte et M. Åke Hansson Ulfsparre.
Sa Majesté Royale proposa alors et dit que les États avaient la veille, par l'intermédiaire d'un comité fort, présenté deux choses à Sa Majesté Royale: 1. concernant le couronnement, qu'il aurait lieu bientôt; à quoi Sa Majesté avait répondu qu'il pourrait bien atteindre son plein développement dans l'été ou vers l'automne.
2. La deuxième concernait le mariage, que Sa Majesté Royale veuille consentir à la première occasion, et qui était d'une grande importance, et par conséquent Sa Majesté l'avait porté à la communication avec le Conseil du Royaume, mais n'avait eu que quelques entretiens avec le comité à ce sujet.
Ils avaient aussi présenté à Sa Majesté sa promesse faite à la dernière Diète au sujet du duc Charles, à laquelle Sa Majesté ne voulait pas consentir de manière aussi précise ou absolue, mais elle ne fut alors prononcée par Sa Majesté qu'à la condition que si elle se décidait à cet effet, Sa Majesté jetterait alors son regard sur le duc Charles, le comte palatin, et sur personne d'autre.
Mais comme le comité des États était principalement préoccupé par les intérêts et la sécurité du royaume, et qu'une confusion pouvait facilement surgir si Sa Majesté fermait définitivement les yeux sans héritiers ni successeurs à la Couronne, Sa Majesté demanda au Conseil du Royaume d'examiner cette question non seulement en tant que conseillers, mais aussi en tant qu'amis; et la question se résumait principalement à deux points et questions:
1. Le mariage était-il un moyen de garantir le royaume avec un héritier déterminé?
2. Si l'incertitude quant à la succession devait entraîner un malheur, Sa Majesté Royale ne voit pas comment elle pourrait libérer sa conscience sans en informer le Conseil du Royaume et en assurer la certitude. La veille, comme toujours auparavant, Sa Majesté avait déclaré aux États qu'elle n'avait l'intention d'épouser que le duc Charles, qui s'était rendu hautement méritant de la Couronne, et non un prince allemand ou étranger qu'elle aurait autrement envisagé d'épouser. Sa Majesté annule le mariage et le laisse à son heure, sans pouvoir encore se prononcer expressément à ce sujet.
Le feldmaréchal estimait qu'il s'agissait d'une nouvelle délibération par rapport à la précédente décision prise l'année dernière concernant le mariage. En effet, il s'agirait d'une sorte de demi-élection où l'on prendrait le duc Charles comme prince héritier du royaume, ce qui nous amènerait à une autre famille. Car, bien que le duc Charles soit issu de la famille gustavienne par sa mère, Sa Grâce ne l'est pas par son père.
Il demanda donc, au nom des autres, qu'on leur accorde un délai de réflexion, et ils ne pouvaient s'exprimer aussi complètement qu'autrement en présence de Sa Majesté. Il s'agissait donc d'une question qui concernait non seulement le Conseil du Royaume, mais aussi tous les États, grands et petits, pauvres et riches.
Sa Majesté s'en réjouit et quitta le Conseil pour monter dans sa chambre. Elle demanda au Conseil du Royaume de ne pas se séparer avant d'avoir délibéré la question avec soin et attention.
Le Conseil du Royaume prit alors la question en délibéré et monta lui-même soumettre son rapport à Sa Majesté. L'après-midi, sur ordre de Sa Majesté Royale, il communiqua l'affaire au grand chancelier du Royaume, M. Charles Bonde, et au comte Lennart Torstensson.

Protocol held in the Council and the conferences with the committee of the Estates on the succession of His Princely Serenity Duke Karl Gustav, Count Palatine, to the realm.

2. The second was about the marriage, that Her Royal Majesty consent to it at the first opportunity, the which matter was of great importance, and therefore Her Majesty had taken it into communication with the Council of the Realm, but had only had some discourses with the committee on this.
They had also presented to Her Majesty her promise made at the last Riksdag about Duke Karl, which Her Majesty did not want to consent to it so precisely or absolutely, but it was only then spoken by Her Majesty conditionally, that if she were to resolve to that effect, Her Majesty would then cast her regard on Duke Karl, the Count Palatine, and no one else.
But because the committee of the Estates was mostly concerned with the interest and security of the realm and that a confusion could easily arise if Her Majesty were to close her eyes for the last time without heirs and successors of her body to the Crown, Her Majesty asked the Council of the Realm to consider and consider this matter not only as councilmen, but also as friends; and the matter mainly came down to two things and questions:
1. Whether the marriage was a means of securing the realm with a certain heir.
2. If Her Majesty had thought of another proposition, if the Count Palatine Duke Karl were not to be declared the Hereditary Prince of the Realm and named as successor if something fatal were to happen to Her Majesty, which would now further the good of the realm; Her Majesty left it to the Council's good consideration.

It was certainly their duty to express their opinion in this matter, but they could not do so in such haste; they therefore requested a little dilation.
Her Royal Majesty said that she could well think that they could not declare themselves on it in such a hurry, but she now thought that it could be ventilated and discussed. Her Majesty had certainly stated to the Estates that she wanted to deliberate about this with the Council of the Realm; and what Her Majesty had said to them, she had said all of it conditionally, as long as the Council of the Realm found it good.
Should any misfortune arise from uncertainty of successor, then Her Royal Majesty does not see how she can liberate her conscience unless she communicates this matter with the Council of the Realm and makes this a certainty. Her Majesty had told the Estates the day before, as always before, that she does not intend to marry anyone but Duke Karl, who had made himself highly meritorious of the Crown, and not any German or foreign prince, whom she would otherwise think of marrying. Her Majesty sets the marriage aside and leaves it to its time and cannot yet expressly declare herself on it.
The Field Marshal thought this was a new deliberation from the previous matter that was agreed upon last year about the marriage, for this would be like a half-election where one would take Duke Karl as Hereditary Prince of the Realm and we would now come to another family; for, although Duke Karl is from the Gustavian family on the mother's side, His Princely Grace is nevertheless not so on the father's side.
He therefore asked on behalf of the others that they might be given time to consider it, and they could not express themselves as completely as otherwise in Her Majesty's presence. So this was also a matter that not only touched the Council of the Realm, but also all the Estates, high and low, poor and rich.
Her Majesty let herself be pleased with that, and at that she left the Council and went up to her chamber, but she asked the Council of the Realm that they not part until they had taken this matter into good and careful deliberation.
Thereupon the Council of the Kingdom took the matter into deliberation and finally went up themselves and gave Her Majesty their consideration; and then in the afternoon, at Her Royal Majesty's command, they communicated the matter with the Grand Chancellor of the Realm, Lord Carl Bonde and Count Lennart Torstensson.
