IV. — La Corte di Roma, informatissima dei menomi gesti e detti della neofita, la quale scriveva ad intimi: «mes occupations sont de bien manger et de bien dormir, étudier un peu, causer, rire et voir les comédies françaises, italiennes et espagnoles, et passer le temps agréablement; enfin je n'écoute plus de sermons», non s'illudeva peraltro di troppo sull'indole di lei.
Il residente di Toscana a Roma, Riccardi, il 25 settembre 1655 scriveva al balio Gondi: «Con questo discorso (il papa) ha parlato della regina di Svezia ch'ella è piena di ottima volontà, ma un poco vana, e che gran servizio ella poteva fare alla cristianità, stando in casa sua regina...»
Che poi si concepisse qualche dubbio sulla veracità delle intenzioni della regina, lo si scorge dall'insieme del carteggio concernente i provvedimenti di quella Corte. Alcuni nutrivano fiducia che Cristina avrebbe avuto ragioni ad assodarsi meglio ne' suoi propositi, dacchè avrebbe assistito in Roma alle grandi funzioni della settimana santa, ed a varie rappresentazioni che si aveva in animo di darle.
Del resto, la più bella prova dei dubbi di quella Corte, ce la fornisce uno dei nostri agenti, il quale scriveva che, nel Concistorio tenutosi il 25 ottobre, stabilivasi di sospendere la missione del nunzio, sinchè si fosse ricevuto l'avviso della pubblica abiura fatta da Cristina, perchè, ove la medesima avesse ricusato di compierla, si sarebbe usato con lei diverso trattamento.
Comunque, i gesuiti, principali ministri di quanto sino allora aveva operato la regina, già ne menavano non lieve tripudio, e gareggiavano nel suggerire gli atti di onoranza che si sarebbero potuti farle.
Il celebre padre Atanasio Kirker [sic] da Fulda, che apparteneva alla Compagnia, filosofo, poliglotto, archeologo insigne, tuttochè siavi stato chi abbiagli contestata la sua capacità, fondatore di quel famoso museo nel Collegio romano che ancor oggi è ricordato con lode, erasi subito esibito ad Alessandro per dare una gran festa in quel Collegio. Ed Alessandro avevagli risposto: «Confirmet Deus quod operatus est in eo».
English translation (my own):
IV. — The court of Rome, well informed of the least gestures and sayings of the neophyte, who wrote to her intimates: "my occupations are to eat well and sleep well, study a little, talk, laugh and watch French, Italian and Spanish comedies, and pass the time pleasantly; finally I no longer listen to sermons", was not under any illusions about her nature.
The Tuscan resident in Rome, Riccardi, wrote to the Balio Gondi on September 25, 1655: "With this discourse [the Pope] has spoken of the Queen of Sweden, that she is full of excellent will, but a little vain, and that she could do a great service to Christianity being in his house as queen..."
That some doubt was conceived about the truthfulness of the Queen's intentions can be seen from the whole correspondence concerning the provisions of that court. Some people were confident that Kristina would have reasons to be more firm in her intentions, as she would have attended the great functions of Holy Week in Rome and the various representations that they intended to give her.
Moreover, the best proof of the doubts of that court is provided by one of our agents, who wrote that, in the Consistorium held on October 25, it was decided to suspend the mission of the nuncio until the notice of the public abjuration made by Kristina had been received, because, if she had refused to carry it out, different treatment would have been used with her.
However, the Jesuits, the principal ministers of what the Queen had done up to that point, were already greatly exulting over it and were competing in suggesting the acts of honour that could be done to her.
The famous Father Athanasius Kircher of Fulda, who belonged to the Company, a philosopher, polyglot and distinguished archaeologist, although there were those who contested his ability, founder of that famous Museum in the Collegio Romano which is still remembered with praise today, had immediately shown himself to Alexander to give a great party in that College. And Alexander had answered him: "Confirmet Deus quod operatus est in eo".
