"La suite fera pourtant voir que malgré les démonstrations extérieures d'une parfaite déférence pour la Reine, il y resta toujours quelque aigreur entre elle & la Régence de Suède, & qu'il y avoit une dent de lait entre elles. Cette rancune augmenta même à l'occasion du congé que Christine donna au Sénateur Seved Bååt, en déclarant le Sénateur Kruus Gouverneur-Général de ses Domaines, quoiqu'elle eût promis, comme il a été rapporté ci-dessus, que le premier garderoit cette Charge autant qu'il lui plaîroit. Nous différerons d'en parler jusqu'à ce que nous ayons rendu compte de l'autre Négociation que la Reine entama, étant derniérement à Hambourg, où elle fit tout son possible pour parvenir au Trône de Pologne aprés l'Abdication du Roi Jean Casimir.
J'ai remarqué, dans mes Mémoires concernant la Reine Christine (T. II. pag. 109-111.), que dans le rapport que le Sénat de Suède fit dresser en 1668. pour ne plus permettre qu'elle rentrât dans le Royaume, on avoit, entre autres raisons, allégué à sa charge la patience qu'elle avoit eue de se renfermer si long-tems dans la Ville de Hambourg, & qu'y étant elle avoit écrit au Sénateur Seved Bååt son Gouverneur-Général 'qu'elle avoit appris à souffrir & à dissimuler, & qu'elle avoit de grands intérêts à ménager...' D'où le Sénat de Suède avoit conclu, que la Reine s'attendoit à quelque grand accident en Suède dont elle vouloit profiter.
En jugeant de ce rapport du Sénat, par le tems où il a été dressé, & par celui de la susdite Lettre de Christine, on peut conclure que le Sénat ignoroit absolument la Négociation que la Reine avoit alors entamée pour parvenir au Trône de Pologne. On peut y ajouter que la Reine ne voulant pas que cette affaire fût sue de quelque autre Cour que ce fût, que du Pape seul, du Cardinal Azzolini, qui dirigeoit ses affaires à Rome, & de deux ou trois autres personnes, qui entroient dans le Secret; pour l'expédition de ses dépêches elle a pu fort bien dire au Sénateur Bååt, à l'égard de son dessein sur la Couronne de Pologne, qu'elle avoit de grands intérêts à ménager, quoique le Sénat de Suède semblât avoir pris ces mots dans un tout autre sens, & qu'il craignît qu'elle ne voulût revendiquer la Couronne de Suède qu'elle avoit quittée.
La premiére ouverture qu'elle fit pour cette Négociation se trouve dans sa Lettre en Italien au Nonce du Pape auprès de la République de Pologne. ..."
"Subsequent events will show, however, that despite outward displays of perfect deference to the Queen, some bitterness always remained between her and the regency of Sweden, and that there was a deep-seated resentment between them. This rancour even increased on the occasion of Kristina's dismissal of senator Seved Bååth in declaring senator Kruus governor general of her domains, although she had promised, as reported above, that the former would retain this charge for as long as he pleased. We will defer to speak of this until we have recounted the other negotiation that the Queen initiated during her last time in Hamburg, where she did everything possible for her to reach the throne of Poland after the abdication of King Jan Kazimierz.
I have noted, in my Mémoires concernant la reine Christine (vol. II, pp. 109-111.), that in the report which the Senate of Sweden had drawn up in 1668 in order to no longer permit her to re-enter the kingdom, it was alleged to her charge, among other reasons, that she had shown patience in confining herself for so long in the city of Hamburg and that, while there, she had written to senator Seved Bååth, her governor general, 'that she had learned to suffer and to dissemble and that she had great interests to take care of...' From this the Senate of Sweden concluded that the Queen was expecting some great accident in Sweden from which she wanted to profit.
Judging from this Senate report, the time at which it was drawn up, and the aforementioned letter from Kristina, one can conclude that the Senate was completely unaware of the negotiations that the Queen had then begun to reach the throne of Poland. It can be added that the Queen, not wanting this matter to be known to any other court whatsoever, except to the Pope alone, to Cardinal Azzolino, who directed her affairs in Rome, and to two or three other people privy to the secret, could very well have told senator Bååth, regarding her plan for the crown of Poland, that she had great interests to take care of, although the Senate of Sweden seemed to have taken these words in a completely different sense and feared that she might want to reclaim the crown of Sweden, which she had quit.
The first opening she made for this negotiation is found in her letter in Italian to the Pope's nuncio to the Republic of Poland. ..."

Io gli ho date alcune altre lettere credenziali per prelati e senatori di Polonia, ma senza soprascritta, perché Vostra Serenità possa destinarle a quelli che ella giudicherà che siano veramente per favorire e contribuire all'intento con farvi mettere il nome e cognome loro e con prescrivere al padre (come si dovrà), comportare con essi e con altri in questa negoziazione, ecc.

Ayant trouvé bon de vous expédier le Pére Prieur Hacki Polonois de Nation & de l'Ordre de Cisteaux, un de mes Chappelains, je vous le recommande de la meilleure façon, en égard à l'importance de la Négociation dont ce Pére est chargé. Je me suis résolue de la mettre entre vos mains, sur-tout en considération de ce que je me suis proposée de la traitter entiérement selon le bon vouloir de Sa Sainteté, comme vous le verrez plus précisément dans l'Instruction que j'ai donnée audit Pére. Eftersom jag funnit det gott att sända Er faderprior Hacki, en polack till nationalitet och av cistercienserorden, en av mina kaplaner, rekommenderar jag honom till Er på bästa sätt, med tanke på vikten av den förhandling som denne fader anförtrotts. Jag har beslutat att lägga den i Era händer, särskilt med tanke på att jag har föreslagit mig att behandla den helt i enlighet med Hans Helighets goda vilja, vilket Ni kommer att se mer exakt i de instruktionen jag har givit den nämnde fadern.

Having found it good to send you the Father Prior Hacki, a Pole by nation and of the Cistercian Order, one of my chaplains, I recommend him to you in the best way, in regard of the importance of the negotiation with which this Father is entrusted. I have resolved to place it in your hands, especially in consideration of the fact that I have proposed myself to treat it entirely according to His Holiness's good will, as you will see more precisely in the instruction I have given to the said Father.
And, as this affair requires much prudence and dexterity, I am persuaded that His Holiness, having just chosen you for this task, all the qualities required for handling such a negotiation will be found united in your person, which, by deploying them on this occasion, will make your strength and merit all the more known and will attract to you the just esteem that one must have for you, and the gratitude with which I will be indebted to you in particular for the care that it will please you to employ for the good success of my idea, which I recommend to you as earnestly as you can imagine, and with that confidence which your authority and your obliging will make me hope for; nevertheless remitting everything, with complete peace of mind, to Divine Providence.

Je lui ai donné d'autres lettres de créance pour les prélats et sénateurs de Pologne, mais sans suscription, afin que Votre Seigneurie puisse les assigner à ceux qu'elle jugera être vraiment en état de favoriser et de contribuer à l'intention en y faisant mettre leur nom et prénom et en prescrivant au père (comme il faut) comment il faut se comporter envers eux et envers les autres dans cette négociation, etc.

Kiedy ojciec przeor Hacki, polski członek Zakonu Cystersów, który jest jednym z moich kapelanów w tych stronach, przybył do Polski w interesach, uznałam, że najlepiej będzie skorzystać z jego pomocy, aby przekazać i polecić pana sprawę tak poufną, jak jest ona wielkiej wagi; i postanowiłam powierzyć ją pana, głównie dlatego, że zamierzam całkowicie polegać na życzeniach Jego Świątobliwości przy jej rozpatrywaniu, jak zobaczy jaśniej z instrukcji udzielonych temu samemu ojcu, a także dlatego, że wymagając postępowania wielkiej przenikliwości i umiejętności, jestem przekonana, że skoro Jego Świątobliwość wybrał pana na to stanowisko, wszystkie te części, które są otrzymywane do rozpatrywania sprawy tego rodzaju, zgadzają się w niej tak, jak powinny i w sposób, który pokazuje, jak wielką korzyść należy ocenić jej wartość i jak bardzo byłbym zobowiązany Tobie za pracę, którą zechce wnieść dla dobrego powodzenia mojej myśli, którą polecam pana z całą największą ochotą, jaką może sobie wyobrazić, i z całkowitym zaufaniem do swojego autorytetu i uprzejmej woli, poddając wszystko w międzyczasie z najspokojniejszym umysłem boskiej opatrzności i usposobieniu.

Dałam mu kilka innych listów uwierzytelniających dla prałatów i senatorów Polski, ale bez podpisu, aby pan mógł je przekazać tym, których uzna za rzeczywiście w stanie przysłużyć się temu zamiarowi i przyczynić się do niego, umieszczając tam ich imię i nazwisko oraz nakazując ojcu (jak powinien), jak należy się wobec nich i wobec innych w tych negocjacjach itd.

When Father Prior Hacki, a Polish member of the Cistercian Order, who is one of my chaplains in these parts, came to Poland on business, I thought it best to avail myself of him to communicate and recommend to Your Lordship a matter of such confidentiality as is its great importance; and I have resolved to place it in the hands of Your Lordship, principally because I intend to depend entirely on the wishes of His Holiness in handling it, as you will see more clearly from the instructions given to the same Father, and also because, requiring a conduct of great shrewdness and skill, I am persuaded that as His Holiness has chosen Your Lordship for this position, all those parts that are received to handle a matter of this kind concur therein as it should and in a manner to make known how much advantage one should estimate its value and how much I should be obliged to you for the work that it will please you to contribute for the good success of my thought, which I recommend to Your Lordship with all the greatest liveliness that you can imagine and with every confidence in your authority and courteous will, submitting everything in the meantime with the fullest tranquility of mind to divine providence and disposition.
For the rest, I refer to the instructions that the Father has orders to communicate to you and to what he adds by mouth, begging Your Lordship to give him full faith and to give him those orders which you deem appropriate, in the execution of which he will certainly not fail in promptness and punctuality and to Your Lordship's merit, I wishing you every true prosperity.
I have given him some other letters of credence for the prelates and senators of Poland, but without superscription, so that Your Lordship can assign them to those whom you judge to be truly in a position to favour and contribute to the intent by having their name and surname put there and by prescribing to the Father (as you should) how to behave towards them and towards others in this negotiation, etc.

"Les Lettres & Dépêches, dont on va faire usage ici, sont presque toutes écrites en Italien, & tirées sur les minutes qui se trouvent en original dans la Bibliothéque de S. E. Mgr. le Cardinal Alexandre Albani, dans le volume qui a pour titre Negoziati della Regina per salir al Trono di Pologna. Ce morceau de l'Histoire de Christine est d'autant plus curieux, qu'on n'a rien découvert de relatif à cette négociation dans aucun Ecrivain de ce tems-là."
