The letter:

Paris, 6th October, 1656. [N. S.]

The queen of Sweden having scarce had leisure to breathe in the French court, is already on her journey to Lyons, and from thence, as it is supposed, for Rome. The old politician loves not so free and so active a spirit nigh the person of a young prince. The court intrigues would be rendered too visible, if made the object of so piercing a judgement. It is thought some specious pretence carrieth her suddenly out of France. It is expected her short sword should disarm both the kingdoms, and so end the war. Dux fæmina foret.

If the preservation of France and Spain be the motives of her journey, I wonder not that she exposeth her person. ...

La reine de Suède, ayant à peine eu le loisir de souffler à la cour de France, est déjà en voyage pour Lyon, et de là, comme on le suppose, pour Rome. Le vieil homme politique aime un esprit moins libre et moins actif auprès de la personne d'un jeune prince. Les intrigues de cour seraient rendues trop visibles si elles faisaient l'objet d'un jugement aussi perçant. On pense qu'un prétexte spécieux l'a emportée tout à coup hors de France. On s'attend à ce que son épée courte désarme les deux royaumes et mette ainsi fin à la guerre. Dux fœmina foret.

Si la conservation de la France et de l'Espagne sont les motifs de son voyage, je ne m'étonne pas qu'elle expose sa personne. ...

Drottningen av Sverige, som knappt haft tid att andas vid det franska hovet, är redan på resa till Lyon och därifrån, som det antas, till Rom. Den gamle politikern älskar inte så fri och så aktiv ande hos en ung furste. Hovets intriger skulle bli alltför synliga om de gjordes till föremål för en sådan skarp dom. Man tror att någon märklig föreställning bär henne plötsligt ut ur Frankrike. Det förväntas att hennes korta svärd skulle avväpna båda kungadömena och därmed avsluta kriget. Dux fœmina foret.

Om bevarandet av Frankrike och Spanien är motiven för hennes resa så är jag inte förvånad att hon avslöjar sin person. ...
