Excerpt from President Viole's letter to Jacques Carpentier de Marigny on Kristina's conversion, dated November 10/20 (New Style), 1655

Source:

A Collection of the State Papers of John Thurloe, Esq;, volume 4, page 183, published by Thomas Birch, 1742

... The queen Christina hath at last made open profession at Inspruck, and hath given advice thereof in a letter to his highness. It is eight years since that she made it in private; and seeing she could not keep her crown with this religion, she had rather forsake it than not follow the true religion, which is the Roman catholic. After all this, what have you to say?

With modernised spelling:

Brussels, November 20, 1655. [N. S.]
... The Queen Kristina hath at last made open profession at Innsbruck and hath given advice thereof in a letter to His Highness. It is eight years since that she made it in private; and seeing she could not keep her crown with this religion, she had rather forsake it than not follow the true religion, which is the Roman Catholic. After all this, what have you to say?

French translation (my own; doubling as a reconstruction of the original):

Bruxelles, le 20 novembre 1655. [Nouveau style.]

Swedish translation (my own):

Bryssel, den 20 november 1655. [Nya stilen].

Above: Kristina.
