Excerpt from Charles Longland's letter to secretary John Thurloe, dated November 26, 1655

The letter:

Their is one Holstein a Lutheran born in Hamborow, master of the library in the Vattican at Rom, which offis he got by turning papist; this man 30 yeares ago was a student in Oxford, and tutor to sir William Courtin's son. He was the only man in Rom thoht sitting by the learn'd, or rather pollitik consistory to meet the queen of Sweden, instruct and advertiz her in her new relligion, for which it is reported that queen must beg a cardinal's cap of the pope for him.
