The biography:

Catharina, konung Carl IX:s äldsta dotter med hans första gemål Maria af Pfalz, föddes i Nyköping d. 9 Mars 1584 och dog i Westerås d. 13 December 1638. — Hon var den enda bland barnen af detta gifte, som öfverlefde sin så innerligt älskade moder, på hvilken hon i allt bråddes. Catharina var på åttonde året gammal, då hon till styfmor fick den sträfva och i allmänhet så litet omtycka Christina af Holstein, som emellertid med en verklig tillgifvenhet fästade sig vid det så utmärkt lydiga och uppmärksamma barnet, så att det allt framgent blef ett godt förhållande mellan styfmor och styfdotter. — Det är bekant huru Gustaf Adolf med den varmaste kärlek och det innerligaste förtroende älskade denna sin halfsyster, i hvars vård han också, vid sin afresa till det tyska kriget, lemnade det käraste han i verlden egde, sin då fyraåriga dotter Christina, som dock sedan, till sin egen och hela rikets olycka, återtogs af modern. Catharina förmäldes år 1615 med Johan Casimir, pfalzgrefve af Zweibrücken, som var i svensk tjenst och qvarstannade härstädes. — Barnen af detta äktenskap voro: Christina Magdalena (förmäld med Fredrik VI, markgrefve af Baden-Durlach), Elisabeth Amalia, död vid sju års ålder, Carl Gustaf (sedermera konung i Sverige, under namn af Carl X Gustaf), Maria Euphrosyne, som blef förmäld med grefve Magnus Gabriel De la Gardie, Eleonora Catharina, förmäld med Fredrik, landtgrefve af Hessen-Eschweige, och Adolf Johan, som under Christinas tid var väl upptagen vid svenska hofvet. ...

Katarina, King Karl IX's eldest daughter with his first wife Maria of the Palatinate, was born in Nyköping on March 9, 1584 and died in Västerås on December 13, 1638. —

She was the only one of the children of this marriage who survived her so dearly beloved mother, on whom she relied in everything. Katarina was in her eighth year when she was given as her stepmother the ardent and generally so little liked Christina of Holstein, who, however, attached herself with real affection to the so excellently obedient and attentive child, so that from then on there was a good relationship between stepmother and stepdaughter. —

It is known how Gustav Adolf loved his half-sister with the warmest love and the most intimate trust, in whose care he also, when he left for the German war, left the dearest thing he owned in the world, his then four year old daughter Kristina, who was later, to her own misfortune and the misfortune of the whole kingdom, taken back by her mother. Katarina was married in 1615 to Johan Kasimir, Count Palatine of Zweibrücken, who was in Swedish service and stayed here. —
