Le 17. Novembre 1685.

Monsieur le Maréchal Caprara, je vous ai rendu justice en parlant avantageusement de vous au sujet de l'action héroïque de Neusel, & je vous remercie de m'avoir donné un si beau & si rare spectacle que celui de voir un aussi brave homme que vous, faire une si belle action, à laquelle j'ai plus applaudi que personne: cependant vous avez voulu m'en remercier, & cette occasion vous a donné celle de me rafraîchir la mémoire des sentimens de respect & de vénération que vous m'avez témoignés de tout tems, dont je vous sai gré, avec toute l'estime qu'on doit à un aussi brave & honnête homme que vous. Je vous en demande la continuation. En revanche je vous félicite de la réduction de Cassovie, & prie Dieu qu'il vous conserve & fasse prospérer toujours.

Jag har gjort Er rättvisa genom att tala fördelaktigt om Er i ämnet Neuhäusels heroiska handling, och jag tackar Er för att Ni har givit mig en så vacker och sällsyn spektakel som att se en så modig man som Ni utför en så vacker handling, som jag har applåderat mer än någon annan. Emellertid har Ni velat tacka mig för det, och detta tillfälle har låtit Er friska upp mitt minne av de känslor av respekt och vördnad som Ni alltid har visat mig, för vilket jag är Er tacksam, med all aktning att man är skyldig en så modig och ärlig man som Ni. Jag ber Er om en fortsättning på det. Emellertid feliciterar jag Er till reduktionen av Kaschau, och jag ber till Gud att han bevare Er och välsigne Er alltid.

I have done you justice by speaking advantageously of you on the subject of the heroic action of Neuhäusel, and I thank you for having given me such a beautiful and rare spectacle as that of seeing such a brave man as you perform such a beautiful action, which I have applauded more than anyone. In the meantime, you have wanted to thank me for it, and this occasion has given you that of refreshing my memory of the feelings of respect and veneration that you have always shown me, for which I am grateful to you, with all the esteem that one owes to such a brave and honest man as you. I beg you for the continuation of it. In the meantime, I congratulate you on the reduction of Kaschau, and I pray to God that He preserve you and bless you always.

Note: Neuhäusel and Kaschau are the old German names for the towns of Nové Zámky and Košice in what is now Slovakia. A battle had just been fought in the latter town on October 18, 1685 between the armies of the Ottoman Empire and the Holy Roman Empire, when Kaschau was part of the Kingdom of Hungary (the town was known then as Kassa). General Caprara defeated the Turkish army and regained Habsburg control of the town after it had been lost in 1682 to the Kuruc rebel leader Imre Thököly.
