Vår synnerliga ynnest, etc. Av Eder nu ankomna och uti Söderåkra den 14 hujus daterade skrivelses innehåll förnimme Vi, tro män och kommissarier till danska fredstraktaten, vad diffikulteter de danska hava inkastat emot de conditiones som I sist ambassadören de la Thuilerie hava levererat bemälte danska att föreslå, såsom ock hurusom bemälte conditiones äro av dem utslagna, och de igenom la Thuilerie låtit offerera Oss (där Vi icke vore nöjda med Halmstad och dess län) Varberg med dess län eller ock Gotland.
I förmäla ock näst detta ock Eder häröver havde konferens med la Thuilerie att, oansett han förmente det de danska inte skulle kunna förstå till något mera eller annan offert, så ville han likväl än en gång resa tillbaka att berätta och remonstrera dem Edert svar därpå; och där han intet hos dem kunde uträtta, då komma igen och Eder valedicera.
Nu såsom omberörda konditioner äro fuller för de danska hårda nötter att påbita, man ock väl tänka kan att de danska i förstone inte så lätteligen skola vara med några argument eller remonstrationer att övertala någondera av samma konditioner att välja och ingå där än Gud giver lyckan att de kunna bliva något närmare och hårdare med våra vapen tillsatte, alltså förse Vi Oss nådigast till Eder att I inte tröttas vid eller något av Eder patientia faller låta, ytterligare ock uti mellertid efter Eder Oss nogsamt bekända försiktighet att söka och driva vad som Vårt rike till styrko och kommercierna till säkerhet tjäna och lända kan, ställandes Eder icke mindre härefter än som härtill skett är styva, låtandes vederparten förstå att Vi på Vår sida väl kunne vid denna tid och som Våra saker nu stå have större orsak än som fienden att bryta traktaten, uti hopp att Gud, som härintill våra rättmätiga vapen emot Danmark haver gjort segersamma, skall ock härefter förmedelst krigskontinuationen giva Oss någon större avantage och fördel till Vår säkerhet än Vi igenom traktaten kunne hava att förmoda.
Men likväl, där Vi kunde igenom traktaten komma till någon säker fred, skulle Vi det fast hellre se och önska än att bliva uti kriget bestickande och förstå med alla konungslig nåde att I alltid Vår benägenhet till freden kontesterat, och Vårt stora missnöje till vederpartens opiniastretet temoignerat hava, inte tvivlandes att I det än ytterligare görandes varda.
Det är eljest av Eder välbetänkt att I efter Eder fattade resolution låta allt ankomma på de danskas kategoriska svar, eftersom Vi ock själva för gott och rådsamt anse att där Eder givit något förslag som värt är att negociera över, I då traktaten därmed tremere till Vår vidare resolution; men står vederparten allt platt ut, det Vi än icke alldeles tro kunne, så måga I, eftersom I skriven Eder vara sinnade retirera Eder på Kalmare att där avse och förbida om någon kommer som Eder revocerar — vilket, där det skedde, kunde I Eder till handelsplatsen igen förfoga.
Det är härhos till beklaga att Vår flotta är vorden här i skären vid Röda kon av kontinuerligt ansträngt motväder arresterad, där hon (som Vi icke annars vete) ännu ligger. Haver fuller så ofta vinden haver varit något stark på norr, lyft ankar och allaredo 5 gånger försökt att gå till segel, men är straxt av storm och motväder tillbaka in i hamnen igen driven; och efter vinden nu synes här något nordlig, tvivle Vi inte att amiralen herr Erik Ryning varder den iakttagandes.
Uti det övriga förvänte Vi nu det föreskrivna utskottet hit till den 2 juli och ärne då bemälte utskott förständiga om närvarande tids tillstånd och förlopp med krigsväsendet så i Tyskland som Danmark och uti vad terminis traktaterna nu bero och över allt taga dess betänkande. Om I herr Rikskansler uti mellertid hade något i synnerhet att påminna, som I nödigt erakta utskottet här att proponera, vele Vi Eder avis däröver förvänta. Slute nu och befalle Eder samtlig[en] härmed Gud Allsmäktig synnerlig[en] nådeligen.

Notre faveur spéciale, etc. D'après le contenu de votre lettre qui vient d'arriver, datée à Söderåkra du 14 du courant, Nous avons compris, féals hommes et commissaires au traité de paix danois, quelles difficultés les Danois ont opposées aux conditions que vous avez récemment remises à l'ambassadeur de la Thuilerie pour les proposer aux Danois, ainsi que comment les conditions proposées ont été rejetées par eux, et ils Nous ont offert Varberg avec son comté ou aussi Gotlande par l'intermédiaire de de la Thuilerie (au cas où Nous ne Nous contenterions pas de Halmstad et de son comté).
En plus de cela, vous mentionnez aussi que vous avez eu une conférence avec de la Thuilerie à ce sujet, que, bien qu'il pensait que les Danois ne pourraient consentir à aucune autre offre, il voulait néanmoins revenir une fois de plus pour leur dire et leur faire des remontrances sur votre réponse à ce sujet; et s'il ne peut rien faire avec eux, alors il reviendra et prendra congé de vous.
Or, comme lesdites conditions sont certainement dures à accepter pour les Danois, on peut bien imaginer qu'il ne sera pas si facile de les persuader, par des arguments ou des remontrances, de choisir et d'accepter l'une ou l'autre des mêmes conditions, à moins que Dieu ne leur donne la chance de pouvoir être attaqués un peu plus près et plus fort avec nos armes. Nous comptons donc très gracieusement sur vous pour que vous ne vous lassiez pas ou que votre patience ne vous fasse défaut, en outre et en attendant, et conformément à votre prudence déjà connue, pour rechercher et poursuivre ce qui peut servir et contribuer à la force de Notre royaume et à la sécurité du commerce, vous confiant non moins ce qui a été fait jusqu'à présent que ce qui sera fait à l'avenir, faisant comprendre à l'autre partie que Nous pourrions bien, de Notre côté, à ce moment, et dans l'état actuel de Nos affaires, avoir plus de raisons que l'ennemi de rompre le traité, dans l'espérance que Dieu, qui a jusqu'ici rendu victorieuses nos louables armes contre le Danemark, Nous donnera aussi par la suite, au moyen de la continuation de la guerre, un avantage et un bénéfice plus grands pour Notre sécurité que Nous ne pourrions espérer par la traité.
Mais si Nous pouvions parvenir à une paix sûre par le traité, Nous préférerions certainement la voir et la désirer plutôt que d'être embrouillées dans la guerre, et Nous comprenons avec toute la grâce royale que vous avez toujours contesté Notre inclination à la paix et témoigné Notre grand mécontentement de l'opiniâtreté du parti adverse, ne doutant pas que vous ne le fassiez encore davantage.
Au reste, il est bien de votre part de laisser, conformément à votre résolution, tout dépendre de la réponse catégorique des Danois, car Nous le considérons aussi comme bon et opportun que, si vous avez fait une proposition qui mérite d'être négociée, vous rendiez ainsi le traité plus redoutable pour Notre résolution ultérieure; mais si la partie adverse continue à se comporter brutalement, ce que Nous ne pouvons pas encore tout à fait croire, alors vous pouvez le faire, car vous avez écrit que vous aviez l'intention de vous retirer à Calmar pour y réfléchir et attendre si quelqu'un vient vous révoquer — ce qui, si cela arrive, vous pourrez de nouveau retourner au lieu des négociations.
Il est regrettable que notre flotte ait été arrêtée ici, dans les écueils de Röda kon, par des vents contraires constamment tendus, où elle se trouve encore (Nous ne savons pas autres informations à ce sujet). Elle a souvent levé l'ancre lorsque le vent soufflait un peu fort du Nord et a déjà essayé de mettre les voiles à cinq reprises, mais elle a été immédiatement repoussée au port par la tempête et les vents contraires; et comme le vent semble maintenant plutôt être un aquilon, Nous ne doutons pas que le sieur amiral Éric Ryning en tiendra compte.
Au reste, Nous attendons le 2 juillet la commission désignée ici et Nous avons l'intention de l'informer de l'état actuel et du progrès des affaires de guerre en Allemagne et au Danemark, des conditions dans lesquelles les traités sont actuellement conclus et de prendre tout en considération. Si vous, Monsieur le grand chancelier, avez cependant quelque chose de particulier à rappeler et que vous estimez nécessaire de proposer à la commission ici, Nous voulons connaître votre avis à ce sujet. Nous terminons cette lettre maintenant et vous recommandons tous particulièrement et très gracieusement à Dieu Tout-Puissant.

Our especial favour, etc. From the contents of your letter which has now arrived, dated in Söderåkra on the 14th of this month, We have understood, faithful men and commissioners to the Danish peace treaty, what difficulties the Danes have thrown up against the conditions which you last delivered to the ambassador de la Thuilerie to propose to the Danes, as well as how the conditions proposed have been rejected by them, and they have offered Varberg with its county or also Gotland to us through de la Thuilerie (in case We be not content with Halmstad and its county).
In addition to this, you also mention that you have had a conference with de la Thuilerie about this, that, although he thought that the Danes would not be able to consent to any further or any other offer, he still wanted to return one more time to tell and remonstrate with them on your answer thereto; and if he can do nothing with them, then he will come again and take his leave of you.
Now, as the conditions mentioned are certainly hard nuts for the Danes to bite on, one can well imagine that they will not be so easy to persuade with any arguments or remonstrances to choose and enter into either of the same conditions unless God gives them the fortune that they can be attacked somewhat closer and harder with our weapons, We therefore most graciously count on you that you do not tire or that any of your patience fails, further and in the meantime, and in accordance with your already known caution, to seek and pursue what can serve and contribute to the strength of Our kingdom and the security of the commerce, entrusting to you no less what has been done heretofore than what will be done hereafter, letting the other party understand that We on Our side could well at this time, and as Our affairs now stand, have greater reason than the enemy to break the treaty, in the hope that God, who has hitherto made our laudable weapons against Denmark victorious, will also hereafter, by means of the continuation of the war, give Us some greater advantage and benefit for Our security than We could have to expect through the treaty.
But still, if We could come to some secure peace through the treaty, We would certainly rather see and desire it than be embroiled in war, and We understand with all royal grace that you have always contested Our inclination for peace and testified Our great discontent with the opposing party's obstinacy, not doubting that you will do so even further.
For the rest, it is well-considered of you that, in accordance with your resolution, you are letting everything depend on the Danes' categorical answer, as We Ourself also consider it good and advisable that if you have given some proposition that is worth negotiating over, you then thereby make the treaty more tremendous for Our further resolution; but if the opposing party continues to behave bluntly, which We cannot yet quite believe, then you may do it, as you have written that you are minded to retire yourselves to Kalmar to there consider and wait for if anyone comes to revokes you — which, if that happens, you can again go to the place of the negotiations.
It is regrettable that Our fleet has been arrested here in the skerries at Röda kon by continuously strained headwinds, where it (as We do not know otherwise) still lies. It has often, when the wind has been somewhat strong in the north, weighed anchor and already tried to set sail 5 times, but is immediately driven back into the harbour by storm and headwinds; and because the wind now seems somewhat northerly here, We have no doubt that Admiral Lord Erik Ryning will take it into account.
For the rest, We now expect the prescribed committee here on July 2 and then intend to inform the committee about the current state and progress of the business of the war in both Germany and Denmark and what terms the treaties now depend on and to take everything into consideration. If you, Lord Grand Chancellor, have anything in particular to remind about in the meantime, which you consider necessary to propose to the committee here, We want to expect your opinion on it.
