Vi have Oss på 3 eller 4 dagar hit förfogat [till Uppsala], här Vi ock igår fingo Edert brev, daterat Söderåkra den 18 hujus, uti vilket I förmäla vad den fransyske ambassadören Thuilerie kort tillförne haver ifrån de danska kommissarierna bragt Eder för en resolution och förklaring över satisfaktionen och kautionen för oss och Sveriges Krona av dem danskom att presterat, nämligen att de offerere Oss Jämtland, Ösel och Gotland för evärdelig ägo till satisfaktion, men Halmstad och Laholm för en kaution och sekuritet av Oss och Sveriges Krono att behållas på 25 år eller däromtränt.

Därvid han skall icke allenast hava rått de danska till cessionen av hela Halland, utan ock sökt att inducera Eder till en sådan acceptation under en hypotek, vilken han haver hållit före kunna så klausuleras att den emot en evärdelig kaution vore till hålla och icke stode till restituera förrän Sveriges Krono bleve på annat sätt försäkrad.

Vi have ock sett vad I därmed hava invänt, både att Halland och Blekingen måtte cederas in perpetuum, jämväl ock vad diffikulteter vore till befara så vid retentionen av hypoteken som eljest vid en ny traktat framdeles över en annan försäkring, till vilken ände I ock hade avfärdat sekreteraren Israelsson, däruppå besynnerligen pressa att såsom Vi och Kronan med ingen underpant vore nogsamt försäkrade och benöjda, så måtte ock ambassadören vinnlägga sig till skaffa hela Halland och största delen av Blekingen på några näst Kristianstad belägna häraden när till en evärdelig kaution under Oss och Sveriges Krono.

Däröver I äntligen förfråga Eder anten I över en sådan tillbuden konditionerad hypotek skola ackordera eller ock låta traktaten gå sär. Till nådigst svar och underrättelse om Vår mening och resolution härutinnan, tacke Vi Eder gunstligen för den möda och flit I vid traktaten och till skaffa Oss och Kronan en god och säker fred använda, och begäre ännu av Eder I icke ville låta vara Eder för svårt därutinnan kontinuera till dess däruppå kan vinnas ett gott och fredligt utslag, därtill nu så mycket större hopp blickar och sig ter som Vi se vederparten sig till skäl länka och närmare Våra postulater sig bekväma.

Nu have Vi tagit Edert brev för Oss och låtit det Oss med flit föreläsa; och såsom Vi befinne denna saken vara av stor konsideration och betänkande, så have Vi ock den med Vårt här närvarande Riksens Råd överlagt och befunnit denna sista de danskas offert icke långt gå ifrån de postulater och grader Vi Eder med sekreteraren tillskickade uti nästförliden aprilis månad. När Vi nu hos Oss väl överväge Vår och Riksens närvarande stat och alla sakers tillstånd och dem jämnföre med och döme av de pregnanta skäl I införa och deducera i Edert handbrev till Oss, skrivet och avgånget den 17 hujus, då måste Vi bekänna freden vara Oss och Vårt Rike nyttigare och tilldrägligare än att Vi i kriget med stor last av Våra egna undersåtare och äventyr av krigets lopp och utgång skulle i längden kontinuera när Vi eljest genom traktater kunde nå en sådan kaution därigenom Vi och Sveriges Krono icke allenast på några år, utan evärdeligen vore försäkrade icke mindre än Oss sker och vederfares kontentement och satisfaktion med evärdelig cession av Jämtland, Gotland och Ösel under Oss och Sveriges Krono och friheten för Våra och Riksens undersåtares och klienters kommercier på en skälig och beständig fot inrättes och stabilieres.

Därföre, och såsom I kommerciernas riktighet och Vår satisfaktion i land hava av vederparten och efter förra gjorda avtal erhållit, så göra I ock mycket väl att I stå uppå en evärdelig kaution och försäkring. Kunna I utan ruptur av traktaten den nå med cession av hela Halland och Blekingen, väl och gott; kunna I ock icke, då består uppå och urgerar att I få hela Halland och Kristianopels län av Blekingen. Kan det ock icke gå, att då hela Halland med fästningar och land cederes Oss och Kronan till evärdelig sekuritet för kommercierna i Sundet och Bält, och Kristianopel raseres och Oss tillbörligen försäkres att ingen befästning skall byggas emellan Kalmar och Kristianstad.

Men skulle ock detta icke vilja gå utan traktatens ruptur, den Vi dock icke vele förmoda, när Vi ambassadörens givna hopp och de danskas offerter konsiderere, då vore en ting att sedan I till satisfaktion hade erhållit Jämtland med Härjedalen, Gotland och Ösel jure perpetuo under Oss och Sveriges Krono, jämväl ock allt vore riktigt och klart med friheten av kommercien i och genom Sundet efter förra avtal, som är det förnämsta härvid att taga i akt och en sak som haver satt Oss i kriget med Danmark.

I då låte Eder kontentera med det som offereres och bjudes till sekuritet; men låter därtill icke lätt komma, utan stå i förstone på de förra grader och att allt kan erhållas till evärdelig kaution och ägo. Men förrän traktaten skulle gå sär, tager kautionen och sekuriteten i fästningar och land under en hypotek och pant att besittas av Oss och Sveriges Krono på den längsta tid I kunna ackordera till — 100, 50 eller äntligen 25 år, — och att Oss sedan vidare måtte tillbörligen försäkras över kommerciernas och deras nu tillackorderade och oturberade lopp och frihet och att allt sker med så god cirkumskription och förvarelse som möjligt är; och vid instrumentens förfärdigande kan ske att framdeles och när åren vore om ock förbi icke något nytt krig i stället för en ny eller vidare försäkring, vore till befara Oss och efterkommanden, det övriga skjutandes på tiden och Guds försyn och disposition.

Det vore ock gott att Skärdala med den holmen som ligger i älven cederades Oss och Kronan av dem danskom och eljest erhölles, vad sig göra låter med avskaffande av bägge riken Sverige och Danmark emellan härtill varande tullfrihet (Sundet eljest undantagandes) i alla måtto; men kunde tullfriheten emellan Sverige och Norge hava sin gång, det tycker Oss fuller vara en kostlig och god ting, vilken sak I väl döma utur Eder instruktion, jämväl ock det rådslag som i Stockholm debatterades in januario och februario år 1644, eftersom ock Eder, herr Rikskansler, både själva härtill förda konsilierna äro bekända, och I bäst veta till dijudicera kommerciernas egenskaper.

Hava ock Eder tillhanda in loco Louis de Geer, med vilken I härom vidare kunna deliberera och sedan hos Eder taga den resolution som I funne bäst och är av vederparten utan ruptur av allt det förbemälte till nå och erhålla. Vi tilltro Eder nådeligen att I efter Eder plikt och bekända diskretion och åhåga till främja Vår och Riksens tjänst tage alla saker i god och noga akt; och ändock Vi väl tro att allt merendels skall vara slutet Eder och dem danskom emellan och dessa hava sig ännu närmare Eder förslag och postulater ackommoderat förrän detta Vårt brev kommer Eder till handa, så have Vi likväl funnit gott detta Eder till fullkomlig och ändtlig underrättelse i denna traktaten tillkomma låta. Nous avons maintenant pris votre lettre devant Nous et l'avons lue à haute voix avec diligence; et comme Nous trouvons cette question d'une grande importance, Nous l'avons aussi examinée avec Notre actuel Conseil du Royaume et avons constaté que cette dernière offre des Danois ne s'éloignait pas des postulats et des degrés que Nous vous avons envoyés par l'intermédiaire du secrétaire au mois d'avril, l'avant-dernier mois. Quand Nous considérons maintenant Notre état actuel et celui du Royaume et l'état de toutes choses et que Nous les comparons et jugeons d'après les raisons importantes que vous introduisez et déduisez dans votre lettre manuscrite, écrite et envoyée le 17 du courant, alors Nous devons avouer que la paix est plus bénéfique et plus appropriée pour Nous et Notre Royaume que de continuer la guerre avec le grand fardeau de Nos propres sujets et les aventures du cours et de l'issue de la guerre alors qu'autrement nous pourrions par le biais de traités obtenir une telle garantie, par laquelle Nous et la Couronne de Suède serions assurées non seulement pour quelques années, mais pour toujours, tout comme Nous recevons et recevrons contentement et satisfaction avec la cession éternelle du Jempterland, Gotlande et Ösel à Nous et à la Couronne de Suède et que la liberté du commerce de Nos sujets et clients et de ceux du Royaume soit établie et stabilisée sur une base raisonnable et permanente.

We arrived here [to Uppsala] 3 or 4 days ago, where We also received your letter yesterday, dated Söderåkra on the 18th of this month, in which you state what the French ambassador Thuilerie has briefly brought to you a resolution and declaration from the Danish commissioners regarding the satisfaction and guarantee for Us and the Crown of Sweden of what the Danes have done, namely that they offer Us Jämtland, Ösel and Gotland for perpetual possession for satisfaction, but Halmstad and Laholm for a guarantee and security to be kept by Us and the Crown of Sweden for 25 years or thereabouts.

In doing so, he will have not only advised the Danes to cede all of Halland, but he has also sought to induce you to such an acceptation under a mortgage, which he has said could be so stipulated that it would be held against a perpetual guarantee and would not be restituted until the Crown of Sweden were insured in some other way.

We have also seen what you have objected to, both that Halland and Blekinge must be ceded in perpetuity, as well as what difficulties there would be to fear, both in the retention of the mortgage and otherwise in a new treaty in the future over a different assurance, to which end you had also dismissed secretary Israelsson and thereupon particularly pressed that as We and the Crown would be sufficiently insured and satisfied with no collateral, so the ambassador should also endeavour to obtain all of Halland and the greater part of Blekinge in some district near Kristianstad for a perpetual guarantee under Us and the Crown of Sweden.

Thereupon you finally ask yourselves whether you will agree to such a contingently conditioned mortgage or also let the treaty go astray. As a gracious reply and information about Our opinion and resolution herein, We thank you favourably for the effort and diligence you have used in the treaty and in obtaining for Us and the Crown a good and secure peace, and We further desire of you that you not let it be too difficult for you to continue therein until a good and peaceful outcome can be obtained, for which now so much greater hope appears that we see the other party linking itself to reason and becoming more comfortable with Our requests.

Now, We have taken your letter before Us and let it be diligently read aloud to Us; and as We find this matter to be of great consideration, We have also considered it with Our present Council of the Realm and found this last offer of the Danes not to go far from the postulates and degrees We sent you with the secretary in the month of April, the month before last. When We now consider Our and the Realm's present state and the state of all things and compare them with and judge from the pregnant reasons you introduce and deduce in your handwritten letter to Us, written and sent on the 17th of this month, then We must confess that peace is more beneficial and more suitable for Us and Our Realm than that We should continue in the war with great burden of Our own subjects and adventures of the course and outcome of the war when otherwise We could through treaties reach such a guarantee, through which We and the Crown of Sweden would be assured not only for a few years, but forever, no less than We are and will receive contentment and satisfaction with the eternal cession of Jämtland, Gotland and Ösel to Us and the Crown of Sweden and that the freedom for Our and the Realm's subjects' and clients' commerce be established and stabilised on a reasonable and permanent basis.

Therefore, and as you have received the truth about the commerce and our satisfaction in land from the other party and after previous agreements made, you also do very well to stand on an eternal guarantee and assurance. If you can, without rupture of the treaty, reach it with the cession of all of Halland and Blekinge, that is well and good; if you cannot, then you must insist and urge that you get all of Halland and Kristianopel County from Blekinge. If that also cannot be done, that then all of Halland with its fortresses and land be ceded to Us and the Crown as eternal security for the commerce in the Sound and Belt, and that Kristianopel be razed and that We be duly assured that no fortification shall be built between Kalmar and Kristianstad.

But if this also cannot happen without the rupture of the treaty, which We do not want to assume, when We consider the ambassador's given hope and the Danes' offers, then it would be one thing that after you had received Jämtland with Härjedalen, Gotland and Ösel as satisfaction by law of perpetuity under Us and the Crown of Sweden, as well as that everything would be right and clear with the freedom of commerce in and through the Sound according to previous agreements, which is the most important thing to take into account in this regard and a matter that has put Us in the war with Denmark.

You would then let yourselves be content with what is offered and offered for security; but do not let this come easily, but stand in the first place on the previous degrees and that everything can be obtained for eternal guarantee and property. But before the treaty can go astray, take the guarantee and security in fortresses and land under a mortgage and pledge to be possessed by Us and the Crown of Sweden for the longest time you can agree to — 100, 50 or finally 25 years, — and that We should then be duly assured of the commerce and their now assigned and untroubled course and freedom and that everything be done with as good circumscription and custody as possible; and when the instruments are made, it can be done that in the future and when the years are over, if there is no new war instead of a new or further assurance, it would be feared for Us and Our posterity, leaving the rest to the delay in time and God's providence and disposition.

It would also be good if Skärdala, along with the islet that lies in the river, were ceded to Us and the Crown was obtained from them by the Danish and otherwise were kept, which can be done with the abolition of the customs freedom between the two kingdoms of Sweden and Denmark (excepting the Sound) in all respects; but if the customs freedom between Sweden and Norway could take its course, We think it would be a valuable and good thing, the which matter you will judge well from your instructions, as well as from the counsel that was debated in Stockholm in January and February 1644, as you, Lord Grand Chancellor, are familiar with both the counsels brought here, and you know best how to judge the characteristics of commerce.

You also have at your disposal in the place Louis de Geer, with whom you can further deliberate on this and then make the resolution which you found best and which is of the utmost importance without rupture of all that was intended to be achieved and obtained. We graciously trust that you will, according to your duty and professed discretion and concern to promote Our and the Kingdom's service, take all matters into good and careful consideration; and although We believe that everything will be mostly concluded between you and the Danes and that they will have accommodated themselves even more closely to your propositions and requests before this Our letter reaches you, We have nevertheless found it good to let you have this complete and final information in this treaty. We wish for God's blessing on the counsels and for happy success, as well as a good and desirable outcome for this treaty. We commend you to God, etc.

Notes: Ösel is the old German and Swedish name for the Estonian island of Saaremaa.

Skärdala (Skårdal) was formerly a small area of land on the east side of the Göta River (Göta älv) at the height of Bohus Fortress and a few kilometers south. This area is defined as an exclave that belonged to Norway for about 200 years until 1658, but lacked a land border with these lands. A fortification, Skårdal Fort (located in Ale Municipality in Västra Götaland County in western Sweden), was built by the Danes on the heights above the present Bohus school and was involved in fighting during the Hannibal Feud of 1644-1645. The fort was captured by the Swedes in the autumn of 1644, but was retaken by the Danes under the command of Ove Giedde on January 27, 1645. Bohuslän would not be incorporated into Sweden until 1658.
