The letter:
Mon Cousin. Tout ce qui me vient de vous, m'est si cher que je ne puis m'offenser d'aucun de vos sentimens, & vous expliquez si avantageusement pour moi ceux que vous m'avez témoignés dans votre lettre par la seconde que j'ai reçuë de vous, que je suis au désespoir de m'être trouvée en des conjonctures qui ne m'ont pas permis avec honneur de suivre votre conseil. J'espère de me justifier bientôt moi-même & de vous faire voir que j'ai tant de déférence pour vos conseils que j'en ferai la règle de ma conduite. Cependant je vous prie d'être persuadé que mes intentions sont conformes à la fidélité inviolable que j'ai jurée à cet Etat, que j'ai pour vous une estime qui vous est dûë comme à celui qui s'est rendu le glorieux Libérateur de sa Patrie, & que je suis avec toute la sincérité de mon cœur

My Cousin,
Everything that comes to me from you is so dear to me that I cannot be offended by any of your feelings, and you explain so advantageously to me those which you have testified to me in your letter by the second post that I received from you that I am in despair at having found myself in circumstances which did not allow me to follow your advice with honour. I hope to justify myself soon and to show you that I have so much deference for your advice that I will make it the rule of my conduct. In the meantime, I beg you to be persuaded that my intentions are in conformity with the inviolable fidelity which I have sworn to this State, that I have for you a respect which is due to you as to the one who made himself the glorious Liberator of his homeland, and that I am, with all the sincerity of my heart,

Note: In accordance with the nobility's ideals in the early modern era, kings and queens considered themselves siblings; when talking to someone of a lower rank than their own, they would refer to that person as "my cousin", regardless of whether or not they were related.
