The account:

In Sweden the young King had shown his mettle, and before he came of age he appointed a commission to inquire into the doings of the Regency, which was found guilty of extravagance and had to pay an enormous sum to the Crown. As soon as Magnus de la Gardie fell, the affairs of Christina began to brighten, and though her revenue was never delivered in full, what there was of it began to come in regularly. She never ceased to agitate about it, and financial security was never to be hers. But whatever she had had, it would not have been enough, and she lived and died in a state of splendid insolvency.
