Monsieur Carton, j'ai reçu agréablement votre Lettre, & je suis bien aise de voir que vous viendrez me trouver aussitôt que votre Ouvrage sera complet. Je vous attends avec impatience. Cependant je vous remercie du zéle extraordinaire que vous témoignez avoir pour mon service, vous assurant que j'y répondrai par ma reconnoissance. Dieu vous conserve & vous fasse prospérer.

Den 14 augusti 1688.

Monsieur Carton,

Jag har mottagit Ert brev med glädje, och jag är mycket glad att se att Ni kommer att träffa mig så snart Ert verk är slutfört. Jag väntar på Er med otålighet. Emellertid tackar jag Er för den extraordinära iver som Ni visar att Ni har för min tjänst, försäkrande Er att jag kommer att svara på det med min tacksamhet. Gud bevare Er och välsigne Er.

English translation (my own):

August 14, 1688.

Monsieur Carton,

I have received your letter agreeably, and I am very glad to see that you will come to see me as soon as your work is complete. I await you with impatience. In the meantime, I thank you for the extraordinary zeal that you show you have for my service, assuring you that I will respond to it with my gratitude. God preserve you and bless you.
