The letter:

MONSIEUR MON COUSIN,

Vous m'avez fait plaisir de vous intéresser pour la folle qui parcouroit le Royaume de Suéde sous mon nom.

Il me semble que cette femme ne mérite pas la mort pour m'avoir contrefait pendant quelques semaines. Elle n'est pas sans mérite, puisque les paysans la prenoient pour moi. Je lui sais bon gré d'avoir fait des actes de générosité & de grandeur. Aussi ne pouvoit-elle bien jouer la Souveraine, sans me copier un peu. Les Suédois connoissent ma bonté naturelle, & le plaisir que je goûte quand je puis trouver l'occasion de récompenser quelqu'un dignement. Ils ne se seroient pas laissés abuser un moment par cette avanturiere, si elle n'eut fait de tems en tems la petite Christine.

En considération de ses grandes qualités, de sa bonne mine & de sa ressemblance avec la mienne, obtenez grace du Roi; dites-lui que je l'exige de sa bonté. Je ne veux point que dans mes Etats on fasse mourir une femme qui porte un nez, des yeux & un front à la Gustave. Je la gratifie, au contraire, pour la consoler dans sa prison, de cinq cens Rhisdales, que vous lui enverrez de ma part. Il faut faire le bien quand on peut, nous n'avons que trop souvent l'occasion malheureuse de faire rien qui vaille, ou, ce qui est à-peu-près la même chose, de ne rien faire. Ne laissez donc point échapper celle-ci.

Min herr kusin,

Ni har gjort mig glad att intressera Er för galna kvinnan som har rest i Sverige under mitt namn.

Det förefaller mig som om den här kvinnan inte förtjänar döden för att ha förfalskat mig under några veckor. Det är inte utan förtjänst, eftersom bönderna tog henne för mig. Jag är tacksam mot henne för att hon utfört generositets- och storhetshandlingar. Så hon kunde inte spela suveränen bra utan att kopiera mig lite. Svenskarna känner ju till min naturliga vänlighet och det nöje jag får när jag kan finna tillfälle att belöna någon värdigt. De skulle inte ha låtit sig luras för ett ögonblick av denna äventyrarinna om hon inte då och då låtsats som om hov var lilla Kristina.

Med hänsyn till hennes stora egenskaper, hennes goda väsen och hennes likhet med min, få förlåtelse av konungen; säg till honom att jag kräver det av hans vänlighet. Jag vill inte att någon i mitt tillstånd skall döda en kvinna som har näsan, ögonen och pannan som Gustav. Jag glädjer henne tvärtom att trösta henne i hennes fängelse med femhundra riksdaler som Ni skickar henne från mig. Vi måste göra gott när vi kan, vi har bara alltför ofta det olyckliga tillfället att inte göra något värdefullt, eller, vilket nästan är samma sak, att inte göra någonting. Så missa inte det här.

English translation (my own):

My lord cousin,

You have made me happy to interest you in the madwoman who has traveled the Kingdom of Sweden under my name.

It seems to me that this woman does not deserve death for having counterfeited me for a few weeks. It is not without merit, as the peasants took her for me. I am grateful to her for having performed acts of generosity and greatness. So she couldn't play the sovereign well without copying me a little. The Swedes know my natural kindness and the pleasure I get when I can find the occasion to reward someone worthily. They would not have allowed themselves to be deceived for a moment by this adventurer if she had not passed herself off as little Kristina from time to time.

In consideration of her great qualities, her good mien and her resemblance to mine, obtain pardon from the King; tell him that I require it of his kindness. I don't want anyone in my state to put to death a woman who has a nose, eyes and forehead like Gustav. I gratify her, on the contrary, to console her in her prison, with five hundred riksdalers, which you will send her from me. We must do good when we can, we only too often have the unfortunate occasion of doing nothing worthwhile, or, which is almost the same thing, of doing nothing. So do not miss this one.

Notes: In accordance with the nobility's ideals in the early modern era, kings and queens considered themselves siblings; when talking to someone of a lower rank than their own, they would refer to that person as "my cousin", regardless of whether or not they were related.

There was an impostor posing as Kristina, it happened in 1659 and the woman's name was Anna Gyllander, although this book gives her name as Johanna Kristina Hildner.
